RIP.
bummer, I remember when he signed with the Brewers, kind of felt like a big deal for a small market team that hadn’t been winning
As a player he was a winner and his signing with us in 1977 turned the perception of the franchise around, both nationally and in the city. He helped recruit other free agents like Larry Hisle. Sad day.
As GM he gave us one great, exciting season back in ‘92. RIP
And if I remember right, he didn’t think Molitor was worthy of being kept on the team, declaring him, “Just a DH.”. Loved him as a player though.
Was key to the turn around in the late 70s. Time caught up in 1980, tried to retire in 1981, but Brewers didn’t trust Roy Howell, so he stayed on at 3B just in case and ended up starting all five games of the divisional championship and played well. After Bob Rodgers was fired in 1982, Selig wanted Sal to manage, he said no and the Brewers tapped Harvey Kuenn instead.
