NHL Trade Rumours – Habs, NYR, Kings & Oilers + Utah Name News & Coaching Updates
we have lots to cover in today’s video including some trade talk around the New York Rangers the Montreal Canadians and the Edmonton Oilers do the Oilers have a huge Darnell nurse siiz problem the contract’s not aging well as the playoffs carry on it looks like he could be a big liability might be an issue from keeping everybody together moving forward we’ll discuss how that could play out plus we have some coaching updates that’ll impact the New York Islanders as well as the Vancouver connects uh we also have some updates on the team name for the new Utah franchise and some Stanley Cup playoff updates as well all that coming up next so welcome back to another video here at topshelf hockey as I mentioned we have lots to cover here today let’s start with the latest happenings from the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs of course last night we saw game four in the Eastern Conference Final between the Rangers and the Panthers uh the Panthers end up taking the game in overtime to tie the series at two games a piece to be completely honest Hest I really think the Panthers could be up three games to one easily um the the Panthers have been the better team majority of this Series eigor shurin has been the main reason why this series is not you know in favor of Florida and it’s actually tied up uh I think too many of the Ranger players or top guys especially in zanah Jad panan krider have been awfully quiet and they certainly need to get those guys going if they’re going to have a chance to win this series right now I know uh um in my early season like or before the playoff predictions I had predicted Florida to go to the east final um but I had them going up against Carolina uh obviously up against the New York Rangers a little bit of a different Beast here um and I thought the Rangers might be able to pull off this series to win but their top guys aren’t producing right now and certainly outside of eagor it’s just hard to say like Florida’s taking um control of most of this so the end of the day last night in the game we saw Vincent troch at a power play goal which was nice to see early on in the first but next shift Sam Bennett comes out ties up for Florida they came right back uh then it stayed that way for a little while until the middle of the second period where CER heggy scores a power play goal for the Panthers uh and stays that way the rest of the period we go into the third 21 Florida the Rangers then tied up Alexi laughr here gets another one early in the third he’s been excellent for them outside of eigor La forers by far been their best forward in my opinion and then it stays that way tied at two going going to overtime and in the first shift well first or second shift overtime first minute we see a bad play by mik zaban Jad um gives a pass to Blake wheeler at their blue line uh but he was not in a good position to receive the pass they turn the puck over go back the other way Wheeler’s chasing down barkov um ends up hooking him which is a good penalty I’m surprised it was not a penalty shot I know most people thought it was going to be uh they got the regular power play instead they scored and converted on it I think the time of reinhardt’s goal was like a minute 12 the power play was like bang bang bang they won the face off a couple of quick passes get it to Reinhardt in the bumper position and boom in the net uh so it was pretty quick um but yeah I’m surprised it wasn’t the penalty shot at the end of the day I think the last penalty shot we’ve seen in an overtime playoff game I believe was Jonathan durur if I’m not mistaken U when he was in Montreal that was uh jeez I think I wanted to say about four or five years ago so um yeah I mean it’s it was a great game overall lots of theater uh we saw lots of physicality again each team kind of making some adjustments as we go but Rangers need to get going and it has to be more than just a couple of guys carrying a load if they’re really going to have a shot to take that uh we’ll see what happen tonight is of course a pivotal game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Dallas Stars in a Western Conference Final they have game four of course in Edmonton tonight the Oilers are making some lineup changes after dropping the last game uh They’re bringing back Ryan McLoud he’s back in the lineup as well as Cory Perry and it looks like Philip broberg is going to go in as well and de her is going to be sitting uh they’re going to change up the de pairs a little bit uh I believe for the forwards that’s coming out I believe it’s going to be Carrick and Fogle uh that’s not going to be in tonight’s lineup so I suspect they’ll put M cloud back uh of course at Center I I do wonder if they could put Henrik back in the top six on on um dry Saddles line I think the pregame lineup is expecting hallway to remain there but I’d almost consider flipping those two guys uh and we’ll see play Holloway maybe with McLoud and brown that line would have a ton of speed um and Henrik would maybe compliment dry s a little bit better hallay has been good there but I wonder if Henrik might be a better option we’ll see a huge game for the ORS if they get down three to one against the Dallas team that’s really deep and strong and great go ending winning three straight games is going to be almost impossible so a huge game for the Oilers tonight as I mentioned we have a bit of an update on the uh team name for the Utah franchise uh team owner Ryan Smith made a bit of an impromptu appearance today on the Pat McAfee show um and he stated that their name processes down to the top four and he threw a couple of names out there saying it’s going to be a good one he mentioned the the name Mammoth and Yeti which I know were two of my preferred ones that are the ones that were mentioned as options in the voting process so uh we’ll hopefully not have to wait too much longer I’m sure it’s going to go through a a little bit more examination maybe another vote so it’s not going to be super quick but certainly be curious to see here what they go with so they can start developing the uh the marketing behind it the logo uh there it doesn’t sound like there’s any chance that they’re going to have all that done in time to have like a you know a a jersey logo for the start of the year um you know a logo I guess is may be possible I wouldn’t completely rule that out but to have them done in time to be able to generate the jerseys and everything I just don’t see it being likely so I would suspect at some point maybe later in a year uh they’ll unveil the Jersey Concepts and then actually have the jerseys maybe for sale next off season and then have the players wear them next year that’s seems to be where we’re heading and for this coming year they’ll just have Utah in a horizontal or on an angle type of thing on the Jersey so we’ll see where that goes but some interesting updates there on the uh the Utah franchise formerly the coyotes some other quick updates around the NHL the Carolina Hurricanes today signed 2019 first round pick Ryan Suzuki of course he’s been on an ELC that’s already been completed he’s battled a lot of injuries uh spent a lot of time in the American Hockey League uh but missed a lot of time but he gets another contract with Carolina to remain there continue developing it’s a one-year 2-way deal uh we saw that former Calgary flame Adam Risa has signed in a c so he won’t be returning I know uh he was put on waivers last year ended up getting claimed by Arizona that had some questionable offi stuff going on um and it wasn’t we knew he wasn’t going to be going back there it wasn’t really clear what was going on with Risa but he’s signed in the KHL so I guess we may not find anything out on that front in the coaching worlds I mentioned a couple of updates some key ones that’ll affect the Islanders first so Mitch corns leaving the New York Islanders I know what their end of season media avail ility Laro did indicate he fully expected to have all the staff including Corin back um so we’ll see um I guess the reasons behind it it sounds like his contract was expiring it’s not a case of the Islanders wanting to move on from kin corin’s leaving on his own accord uh he’s going to be uh rejoining Barry trots Corin in case you’re not aware has worked with Barry trots pretty much exclusively uh during his entire run in the NHL he was the original Predators goalie coach so way back when the Nashville franchise first started we know trotz was there in the beginning days well so was Korn and Corn’s kind of followed trots around ever since uh worked with him in his other Stomps along the way including Washington too and then Long Island so uh kind of getting the band back together in Nashville so to speak so obviously in Nashville they had a couple of goalie coaches already um and goalie advisers he’ll oversee the entire department he’ll have like a director um of goalie type of title uh the other coaching update we got today is the kaks are losing associate coach Mike yo uh and again this is not a case of the kaks firing him or moving on this is the case of Mike yo on an expiring contract deciding for himself to move on he was apparently offered a contract extension chose not to accept it and is exploring other opportunities there is some speculation that he could join Craig barui in Toronto of course he was on the St Louis blue sta there with barui for a while so certainly they’ve previously worked together and we know that the Leafs are examining the uh uh the staff there will be making some changes in additions to Bru’s uh assistant coaches so he very well could end up there he looked after the penalty kill in Vancouver this past year and did a really good job so I know same goes for Mark sard who’s been you know rumored to be joining buuy after he uh mutually agreed to part way with the Calgary Flames maybe they’ll have um Saar to be the power play coach and yo to be the penalty coach that wouldn’t be completely shocking so we’ll have to wait and see but I know yo was a you know well respected guy in Vancouver and I think tet and the staff there were quite content for him to remain but they’ll Now look for a replacement Anders Lee the captain of the New York Islanders has been awarded the King Clancy trophy uh of course that’s a yearly trophy that’s geared towards leadership for on and off the ice as well as uh noteworthy humanitarian contributions to the local community so clearly we know lead does a lot uh for the team and for the community off the ice so a welld deserved recognition there for all of his efforts another signing as well the St Louis Blues signed one of their early prospects in the 2023 draft third rounder urri perer who was a forward taken in from the USHL has signed his three-year entry level contract now under the rumor section of the video uh we got some new um names you could say in the rumor mill uh Frank Zar valy da face off updated his trade bait board for heading you know into the offseason here he has one of these he updates periodically throughout the regular season leading to the trade deadline and now that that part’s done this is the first new one he’s put out since then uh kind of ranking in top 20 so to speak of players that he thought should most likely be dealt of course not everybody will be traded but names that are out there in the market and they’re you know they’re hearing enough speculation that could lead to uh you know changes like I mentioned Kapp kacko is the name to watch the New York Rangers now they’re still in the playoffs so we’re not going to hear probably as much as we will until their season is over um but certainly we know kacko the former number two overall pick behind Jack Hughes uh taken the year before Lexi lafranier U you know has been expected to be a big part of that team and he has yet to flourish we finally seen lafranier take off this year uh he was given a little bit more of an opportunity to play in the top six not that kaco hasn’t had his opportunities here in there but he’s also had a you know difficult time seizing those opportunities uh he only put up uh 19 points this year in 61 games uh he’s at times been a healthy scratch including in the playoffs and some of these playoff games which are quite important and it just kind of makes you wonder and think at this point after the number of years he’s been with the team uh he’s already gone through his rookie contract this is you know contract number two that he’s on which is you know going to be coming to a close you know do they need a bottom six player making that much money uh probably would be best at this point that maybe he’ see if he can find a role on another team that might you know allow him him to thrive better uh certainly laughran year I think a lot of his struggles personally part of it is kind of just maturing and figuring it out getting into the NHL and you know getting adopted and that can take a couple years for sure but at the same time I do think it was how he was being utilized in his role and this year laet gave him a little bit more rope to be in the top six and he seized it Koo didn’t necessarily get that same opportunity um but maybe there’d be another team out there where he could uh certainly a number of teams come to mind of teams that might be willing to take that chance uh you know not that everybody is going to get linked to Montreal but we know K Hughes and Jeff Gordon have made it uh a bit of a annual event if you will in the last few years to pick up a top young player on a you know cheaper contract that might need a fresh start well of course we know Jeff courton knows a lot about Capal kako because he was obviously big part of the Rangers franchise and the the front offense when he was drafted so you know he’s a player as well that you know I wonder if they this is just me wondering there’s no link to the Habs um if you know where he’s familiar with them if they felt like they could get them on a cheaper price tag if it’ be somebody that they might give a shot to we know that they’re they’re going to likely go after at least one younger player that they feel can fit their top six there’s lots of names out there price tag will play a role as well but I do wonder abouto I mean I’m not I won’t be shocked if he’s trade it there’s lots of other teams that could you know maybe be in the mix there um obviously it’s like I said the Rangers aren’t even done their season yet there’s really no talks going on it’s just the kind of media suggesting that based on his utilization based on his production based on how he’s developed now for you know you know last four or five years like it just you have to wonder if it’s going to get any better than what it has in New York and is it time to move on um so I do think he’s going to be a name that we see uh talked about more in the next 3 4 weeks it wouldn’t be shocking if it is maybe a fresh start for him this offseason we’ll have to wait and see of course another name couple names to watch in Montreal uh there is word on sah Valley’s latest list here that a couple of veterans should uh likely get moved I know David sard’s name has been out there there’s been mixed opinions on the future of David sard sard still has a year left and has three and a half million doll contract and he’s been a good veteran for Montreal now uh there’s some people would say well they need to have a few veterans around they can’t have an entire Decor of youngsters and murkies and inexperienced guys and while I concur that that’s definitely the case uh they do have some other veterans around including mikee mat who can likely stick around and kind of be the anchor for that team he had a tremendous year this year um you know and of course sard’s another one who you know I think would be content to write up the rest of that contract but right-handed defenseman especially ones who can play decent in the defensive Zone block shots you know penalty kill they’re kind of out of Premium so I think they could get a better return for sear than say when they moved Joel Eon um and they got a decent return on Ebon so you know it wouldn’t be shocking if uh if the hams do move sver um I do believe he has some trade protection in his contract so I’m not sure exactly where he’s willing to go uh at this point he has a Stanley Cup so I know he was happy to kind of make it a homecoming and go to Montreal he very well might do his best to block any movement and stay there if it’s possible depending on which teams are interested in him but certainly look for him to be in name Montreal has out there in the market trying to find a new home for it not 100% you know sure that he goes but they do have a lot of a lot of young d uh as well and enough of them on the right side that you they might want to give opportunities to so we’ll see I mean they can certainly justify the move especially with where they expected team to be this year so we’ll see on him and another name to watch in Montreal would be Christian dvorac I think you could throw u armia in that conversation as well armia played really good down in stretch last year after not a great camp and not a great start he finished really strong um you know could they move armo with retained salary I think it’s a real possibility and Dvorak he’s going to be leaving Montreal one way or another either by trade um or by free agency I mean he has not worked out he was a trade made by the previous regime of course that came right after the uh uh the the offer sheet with and the Emy and everything went down uh they brought the comp they used the compensation from that to uh to bring in another centerman since they lost some D there at the time looked like a good move because you know he had you know had some good solid um development with the coyotes and he was looking like it could be a real good pickup for Montreal but between injuries and his play just hasn’t worked out um and I think it would probably be best for him to move on to try to find his game in another organization and I think monreal would like to do that uh so we’ll have to see I know this past year was something that they probably would have liked have done as well but he was injured a lot um which is a big par of why things aren’t working out so we’ll have to wait and see how things go on that front clearly um you know there’s some bets there that Montreal wants to move on from and they might not be able to do it for all of them I know another name to watch as well is Los Angeles Kings young forward arur CV uh there is reports from Dave ponut suggesting that you know obviously his name has been out there for a while but CV would like to be traded he’d like to have a fresh start and he would like to have an opportunity to consistently play I mean he was um you know he was healthy scratched a fair bit production hasn’t been the greatest but he has been able to put up a decent amount of goals over the last couple years when he’s been in the lineup at times like it’s not I I’m not sure how to describe him uh really I think the kings are just I think he’s a player that they just kind of leave him wanting more so to speak I think they’d like a more rounded more complete player than what he can provide but he is a shooter he can be a goal scorer and it’s the hardest thing to do in the NHL so even if it is a bit of a one-trick pony somebody’s gonna be willing to give him a chance I have no doubt but where he ends up I don’t know but uh I think the kings are definitely ready to give that a try to move on here and as I mentioned I do the Oilers have a massive problem named Darnell nurse and I think the answer is they do I mean it’s not a secret that this contract is not great for Darnell uh it’s not his fault that the team went out of their way to sign him to this contract um so I hate to see him get hate from the fans from that perspective because his contract sucks but he was grossly overpaid I know my myself when the contract was first announced I had to do a double take making $9.25 million on a 8-year deal um you know like for what he provides defensively and offensively like he’s never been a top 10 defenseman in the NHL like he’s got size he’s like 64 230 lbs like he’s got the size he’s got the strength he can play physical doesn’t play as physical as you’d like sometimes and he creates a lot of turnovers the defensive side of the puck has not been strong and I do wonder about the IQ sometimes as well between him and Vander Kane they have this this knack for taking the dumbest penalties sometimes at the most inappropriate times like you know last night was like four or five minutes to go not last last game the ERS are trying to get it tied up against Dallas and he goes and takes a stupid ass dripping penalty just like you know questionable decisions on the IQ and you know they’re not far away from this summer having to talk to Leon drle about a contract extension he’s going to want a raise he’s earned it he’s done a lot of good things with this team and is one of the top players in the world he can command big money you know mcdavid’s not all that far from needing a new contract that’s just a couple years down the road and having this $9 million contract on the books when you know most most teams including the Oilers he would be their highest paid defenseman and he’s not even probably their third best D like EOL and buard are both significantly better than nurse significantly better like he’s at most a second pair guy and there are times when he’s paired with Cody CCE on that second pair when it’s just like oh my God like it’s stressful like they do not do well like they the ERS I hope for their sake tonight in the game four that they don’t put them back together with taking day her out of the lineup like anyways like this contract is becoming uh at the beginning you’re like okay well that’s an overpayment like you Know But as time has gone on now it’s like you know we’ve gone a number of years without the cap Rising it’s just starting to go up and now we’re at a point where the some of their other top guys are going to need new contracts and they’re going to find that more challenging having this this contract on the books buying him out is almost impossible I looked at the buyout options and because of the way his contract is structured with heavy bonuses in the last like four years um that he they would save a big chunk of money for the next two years and then after that it would be all downhill it would be massive cap hits and it’s just not worth it because that they loaded the back end the back half of it with major signing bonus money so his agent knew what he was doing when he structured the contract the way that he did to make it bio prooof it’s not going to happen the only way the only hope that the Oilers I think have is they’d have to retain money on it but because if you think about it there’s six years left on those 8year contract and they do a bio that means they’re going to have some form of a cap hit for the nurse contract for 12 years that’s an eternity like that’s ridiculous but if they trade them and they can retain some money even if they have to eat2 or3 million he you know at 6 million or 6 and a half million okay maybe he’s a little bit more reasonable priced you know uh I know I’ve heard McDavid votes for him a lot as the leader that he is and how important he is to the room but you have to look at wins and losses on the ice too and he’s just not getting it done and that contract is proving to be a major major issue so there is some talk from s Valley and others that they could look to move them this Summer it’s not going to be easy uh the way the contract is structured between you know the bonuses and the signing the um trade protection not easy at all but I think they have to explore it see what they can do even if it retains means retaining some money so that they can make sure they keep all their other top guys together because it’s going to make it very challenging with that on the book so let me know your thoughts is it possible we could see a Dar elur trade this off season I wanted Laf last year…knew he’d have a solid year. For a lesser price, wouldn’t mind taking a shot on Kaako. Not willing to give up more than a 2nd tho
Yes
Ranger fan here, we preferred a penalty shot in that instance. I have spoken to a few people that were in Florida last night, they said some empty seats up top and fans were flat. Rangers fire side chat said the same thing.
Ryan Smith will announce that the Utah NHL team will be named the Yeti for the 2025-26 season.
