Reviewing Seasons Of The San Jose Sharks 2023 Draft Class
we finish off the review of the San Jose Sharks prospects by looking at the 2023 Drive class and oh boy you’re locked on sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hello welcome to locked on sharks the premier hockey podcast C your favorite team in the Bay Area my name is JD young uh caretaker at The Reef also the co-host of Western Conference Tuesdays on the lockon NHL channel want to thank you for making lock on sharks your first listen probably part of the lockon network we cover your team every day if you want to be an everyday or all you have to do is just follow on wherever you get Podcast or you can watch this on YouTube as well and today we’re going to be uh finishing off our series looking at the 2023 NHL or sharks draft class so we’ve done the 2020 2021 2022 and we’re going to finish off the 2023 as our way to kind of review each prospects the year and this draft class is shaping up to be something special for these sharks we’re going to start out by looking at of course the three first round picks that the Sharks got out of this after the tomash hurdle trade uh then look at some of the middle Round Guys and halted and kags and then look at some of the late round guys and see which of those could be potential guys to pop for the sharks so um before we get to all that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase terms appli so we have to start with the fourth overall pick in the draft class and that was one Will Smith uh who in 41 games this year had 25 goals 46 assists 130 shots on goal and just signed his ELC to become a San Jose Shark so Will Smith had a a monster season one of the best freshman Seasons that we have ever seen in NCAA history um Boston College of course made it to the finals unfortunately did not win or fortunately if you’re a University of Denver fan but what Will Smith was able to accomplish this season is uh why you picked him fourth overall right just that the ability to generate offense control pace of play um create offense for his teammates and the scoring ability uh Will Smith is a total package when it comes in the offensive zone whatever you want Will Smith to be able to do he can do it and we saw that on display all season long with Boston College but now comes the the big test with Will Smith is what happens when you get him out of that safe environment of Gabe perau and Ryan Leonard who he’s been paired with for the past you know two to three seasons now uh between his time at the US national team um and then a season at Boston College and we’re going to see the will the the true Will Smith here and I think he’s going to be fine like yes there’s questions about his defensive you know what he can and can’t do in the defensive Zone but I think we we get so focused on what he can’t do we forget about what he can do and what he can do is he can drive offense and generate offense um and make your team better right Will Smith is going to make the San J sharks better uh may not be day one but he’s going to make the Sharks a better team because he can make his linemates better whether he needs some sweet passing whether he needs to be a score whatever he needs to do uh Will Smith will be able to do that and I fully expect uh we’ll be looking back a year from now and discussing why Will Smith going pro was the right choice and as we talk about his development and he continues to grow in that area but uh Will Smith now comes a big test for him and I think he’s going to be more than ready to handle it so uh of course the Sharks also drafted Quinton musty in the first round uh 26 overall with uh last year he played 61 games had 45 goals 67 assists with 243 shots on goal yeah he uh this is also including playoffs as well for the O OHL um musty of course uh put up 100 points in 50 Smart games we saw multiple nights where Quinton musy had four five six points um in a night highlight real goals um and looking like a potential steal at the end of the first round for the Sharks and um there’s still needs to be some work to be done I think uh for him with comes to consistency um and playing kind of a full 200 game foot game but you don’t expect that to be there for 18-year-old kid who’s he’ll be 19 in July uh like quit musty is super young we have to keep that in mind so I fully expect him though to play NHL games next year I I I would not be surprised if he gets his nine games in the NHL before going back to the OHL uh to play with Sudbury and we’ll see what Sudbury does if I know they’re losing dorski and like they’re kind of losing a couple pieces here or potentially losing dorski but um losing a couple pieces here they could be one of those teams that where they sell a bunch of guys for a bajillion draft picks as you see the CHL trades but mus is set to go back and just have a monster season in OHL um he has to go back though that’s the thing is since he’s only turning 19 he has to go back for one more season uh before making kind of before making the jump to go pro um The Following season but fully expect him just to go back and just have a ridiculous season um in the OHL where he probably probably is going to be pushing for the scoring leading the ol and just doing ridiculous things and fully on his way to being a top six Winger for the Sharks and uh if depending on what they what they do with pick number 14 here um the sharks are going to be looking ridiculous rediculous in the top six as they continue this rebuild here and that’s without even adding free agents and kind of looking at guys who are currently other on the roster other than William eckan um this top for the Sharks is going to be uh is working its way to be a a legitimate like one of the best top sixes potentially if everyone if everyone hits what we think they’re going to do uh the Sharks top six is looking dangerous so uh and then of course the Sharks acquired David edrom in the to much hurdle trade um so he was uh first- round pick from Vegas played with frolunda in the shl this year played 58 games uh including playoffs nine goals 16 assists uh 16 assists excuse me with 64 shots on goal got to watch a couple of his playoff games and he was playing big minutes for uh for foronda and he’s going to be back with foronda next year like no rushing him I I fully expect him to have a another kind of big season for them um should be in World Juniors as well for uh in the for team Sweden like esrum is going to be a super solid middle or probably super solid third line Center who’s going to be able to play a full 200 foot game um and if you have Mel Ry Will Smith and then either edstrom or beasted playing your down your middle there there that is that’s that’s really nice um that shape up to really really nice and um maybe estr doesn’t have as high of seeing as some other guys but he’s going to be an NHL player because of the way he his kind of attention to detail on defense um and I think the way he kind of thinks the game as well you already see it watching his shl games here U just his I think he’s a little bit more refined comparing him to Beast dead in in that the defensive Zone um and once he gets to the smaller ice I think those details are going to um be even more like kind of highlighted because of his one he doesn’t have as much space to cover um but two I think as J is on is going to to being a really really solid uh third line Center and if you need him to play top six I think he’ll be able to complement whatever you need up up front so um yeah these three these three picks here I know the Sharks didn’t have edstrom when when they started the draft or at the start of the year and at the draft but um you you this these three picks are are your foundation combined with you know the the Sharks two picks in the first round of 20 the 2024 draft these five picks overall are going to be massive in the direction of the Sharks and if they pan out or get close to what we expect them to be this is going to be the core of your team for the next 10 to 15 years um you know with guys like lebrini musty Will Smith uh these guys leading the way so uh really exciting times for the sharks they keep you know the the the future is teal the future is teal um this this class could be one of those where we look back and go sharks h a bunch of dudes and it’s it gets even more crazy when we start to look at some of the other guys here that that they were able to grab so uh we’ll look at some of these mid-round guys here including Casper Halton and Luca kagon um here in just one second if you want to grabb tickets to the NBA finals um or you just want to go catch a Giants game an A’s game maybe you want to start getting tickets for the NFL uh season you need to check out game time uh cool thing about game time is the prices on the game time app actually go down the closer it gets to kickoff tip off whatever it is to start the game they have kill assestment deals all in prices views from their seat and their lowest price guarantee game time takes the guest out of buying tickets uh the thing I love about game time is you actually get to see your view nothing worse than getting to an event and realizing I got crummy seats actually the only thing worse is when you go to purchase your seats and then you go to check out and you get hit with a bunch of fees with game times all in pricing you know exactly what you’re going to pay no sticker shock no surprises none of that uh you just know what you’re going to pay two Taps you have tickets straight on your phone so t guess we’re got to buying tickets with Game Time download the game time app create an account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase terms apply again create an account and redeem code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase download game time today last minut tickets lowest price guaranteed all right uh let’s we we did a whole segment we haven’t even got out the first first round uh which is uh yeah it’s pretty nice so of course in the second round the Sharks drafted Casper Halton it um he played all the games this year 79 games in the OHL including the playoffs Memorial Cup everything 53 goals 39 assists 285 shots on goal and honin is uh a player I think who’s grown on me as the season has gone on um very much power play specialist and they’re still going to be that part of his game right uh where he’s going to need to work on I think the skating needs to get cleaned up um you saw I you know watching the playoffs where he just not the cleanest of skaters especially maybe kind of with his starts there and I think that’s something that he’ll need to continue to work on as he uh continues his career but my goodness that man can shoot a puck like nobody’s business um and if you just park him um on you know kind of Park him in the faceof dot and have Will Smith Quinton musy William eckan M celebrini skating around and just flinging him pucks he’s going to score bajillion goals uh just by doing that so um I think with with hon and it’s the the thing I’ve been most impressed impress about is his ability to I I’ve continue to work on areas of his game and I’ve seen his ability to for check I think really grew and became a important part of London’s success especially in games where they were down he was one of those guys who kind of led the the charge and led the the rally and cry uh and earned a lot of ice time in in those kind of key moments for for London especially when they were down um needs to work on earning the trust to be you know playing when you’re up which is also a very key skill but uh I think though Halton who the sharks they have a decision here you can send him back to since he was drafted uh when he was drafted he was playing in a European League he does not like he’s not part of the CHL NHL agreement so he can play in the AHL next year um remember if you’re part like Quinton musty who was on an OHL roster when he was drafted canot not playing the AHL next year Casper hton was not on an OHL qmj Q League or a WHL team when he was drafted so therefore if the Sharks want him to play uh with the Barracuda uh they can have him play and he had a post kind of saying like Thank You London I have a feeling he his time in London is done and I would not be surprised if he’s playing in the AHL next year because one he’s played against men for basically entire life and tell not his entire life but he’s played against menf before kind of I think got his confidence back playing in the O this year and I expect him to be on the Barracuda next season so uh one guy who won’t be on the Barracuda next season uh because he’s going to school is Brandon sabota uh so sabota started his season with the youngst toown in the USHL uh 25 games there had seven goals four assists with 39 shots on goal got traded to Fargo and you saw a a different player once he got traded to Fargo 24 games there had nine goals five assists with 42 shots on goal uh saot is going to be playing in Boston uh College next year is it colle Boston College of B University um I’ll look this up while I’m talking but um I think for faota he really I think turned the corner after getting traded um and found his game again and I think for him going to college this year um where he’s going to be able to play on Boston University so um he’s going to be playing with on Boston University that team’s gonna be very good even if they don’t have Ma and celebrini but that team still has a lot of really talented players um that are going to be on there like Cole Hudson um like they they’re they’re going to be a very good team again um and I think this will be a chance for him to kind of continue his development I know a lot of people are a little me on S this season because he didn’t really light it up in the USHL but I think it changes scenery for him and he’s a big guy who’s I think still maybe trying to figure out what style of player he wants to play and I think playing playing in in the NC blade is going to be very good for him because it’ll he’ll have to kind of figure out his style here and I think that’ll be good for him so um I still have hope for him I don’t I think he’s going to be one of those guys he probably plays you know all either three to four years in college before the Sharks kind of figure out what to do with him so um one guy who I don’t think the sharers will need to kind of figure out what they’re going to do with them is Luca Canon um 78 games including playoffs for the Portland Winterhawks 21 goals 82 assist 269 shots on goal my good goodness uh what a season for kenon the first uh player in 30 years first defenseman excuse me in 30 years to put up over 90 points uh kenon was an absolute uh monster this season earned his ELC so we can stop asking the Sharks admin to please sign uh Luca Canon but um y’s projected to be a second round pick and I talked about him being picked where the Sharks got Casper hton and they got him in the fourth round and again looking just like an absolute steel I know there’s concerns with the size and if he can play defense I know he can play defense okay um I watched a lot of Portland Winter Hawks games this year and yes he’s going against 181 19y old kids etc etc but the the tenacity for a guy his size and just the motor for a guy his size he just doesn’t give up on in the defensive Zone there’s going to be shortcomings because again he’s 5 foot n but I think he has he’s got that chip on his shoulder especially as a guy who was not draft in the WHL had to earn everything even at the draft himself right expected to be a second round pick fell to the fourth round with pick 20 23 he’s just got that that like super nice kid one super easy to talk to but the way he plays he just plays like every shift is his last shift um and I think he is going to just continue to prove people wrong I am 100% like buying all the kenon stock I think kenon I I’ve said it before and I’ll continue to say it again player defenseman his size they’re either amazing in the NHL or they never make it at all I’m gonna continue to bet that Canon is just amazing in the NHL because uh he just has something about him um where he’s just going to continue to work and get better at what he does this year he said he wanted to focus on defense he still put up 90 points so and just as a reminder since Ken yon’s birthday uh is before the end of the season he’ll turn 20 before the end of the season he is AHL eligible and I fully expect him to be in the AHL next year uh just because I I think after Jack Thompson there’s a lot of question marks uh among the defense for the Barracuda and I think kenon can help answer some of the question marks um they’ll need to find the right partner for him but I think kenon is is going to be playing professional hockey next season and uh we’ll we’ll continue to see how his development goes but I’m excited I think Halton and kenon on the Barracuda next year are is going to be super fun so uh we’ll look at like the rest of these guys here and kind of see how how the uh late round picks uh are continuing their development and which guys could potentially pop so we’ll get to that here in just one [Music] second hey locked on sharks fans I want to take a moment to bring in one of our partners the mobile game check it out to download the game visit hockey gm. app uh or look it up on the App Stores ultimate hockey GM start your Dynasty today all right let’s finish up here with some of the late round picks uh we’re going to start with Axel landine uh who the Sharks picked in the fifth round I’m gonna be honest I haven’t watched much of land Dean um he is a very much defensive defensive defenseman uh if you like that that is Butters your toast uh landine is your guy he’s going to be spending the next couple seasons in the shl because he just actually signed a new contract this season so so he’s going to be over there for a while that’s fine let him continue to marinate but 35 games zero goals zero assists 19 shots on goal in the shl did also play in the j20 which is kind of their their Junior League very similar to the CHL um so and there he had in 22 games he had one goal with 11 assists I couldn’t see his shot totals because it’s very hard to find stats in Sweden uh when it comes to that but uh one of those guys where you you’re just you know letting him kind of sit and marinate and see if he can continue his development over there and become a piece for you I think his role eventually is like I said a a kind of shutdown third pairing defenseman um you’re not going to expect much offense but he is a very physical player um as well one guy who I think really popped this season though is Eric pamp the 2023 fifth round pick out of uh who went to beiji State this season uh did transfer to University of Denver and we’ll talk about that here in a second but 32 games 11 goals 13 assists 121 shots on goal a ton of uh accolades um at bichi State and he’s a guy who you could see being a really solid two-way defenseman because he has the offense he’s not afraid to shoot but he’s he’s not the biggest he’s only 5′ 11 but he is Stout and he shuts dudes down at the Blue Line multiple times times where Ka are trying to come in um and he just basically parks at the Blue Line and just crushes dudes just straight up crushes dudes at the blue line but transferring to University of Denver this season where he’s going to be playing some big-time hockey on the defending national champion uh Team so if if if if he has a really monster season there the sharks might be discussing if it’s time to make him go pro M he’s an overaged so he’s a little bit old he’s a year older should have been part of the 2022 draft class um but I could very much see a world where uh Eric pamp has basically gone from an unknown player right made the world junior roster team last year um that won Gold Mass massive season with B piji State now going to be playing on like I said the University of Denver team he has another massive jump this year I know competition is gonna be tougher but the the kids got something to him just like I talked about with Kon different type of player much different type of player way more physical um and but I think he’s he could be one of those guys where we’re looking at like how did he get to the the fifth round and the Sharks could be uh um feeling pretty good about where they still need some pieces at the top of the blue line but I think uh Eric pul Camp really figures into uh the Sharks development and their their their Prospect pool so uh we’ll see what what happens continues to happen with with him so uh up next is uh David CLE so seventh round pick uh played with msan this year in the USHL uh 70 including playoffs 70 games 17 goals 28 assists 100 23 shots on goal Barracuda did sign his brother as well so he’s going to be a I know they signed him last year I think they anyway he was he’s in the system right now so uh but as for David he’s going to be playing with the University of North Dakota North Dakota is a great School uh in the hockey world really good at developing their uh picks I know uh the S uh love drafting guys are going to be going there they they’ve had a ton of guys going um they’re one of those guys who I think is going to be kind of like uh Brandon saota they’re going to let him play for the next four seasons and kind of see where he is at after he he graduates but um yeah I I think for him though probably like AHL tweener type of of type of projection but uh I could see him making a very long career in the the AHL so and then finally Igor revi uh the seventh round pick out of Russia playing in the KHL for Damo uh mosa uh 45 games in the KHL with six goals 11 assists and 4 54 shots on goal oh this production is like average with him averaging like nine minutes a night so that is really really really solid production for a guy who’s averaging 9 Minutes tonight he got more ice time in the playoffs I think it was up around like 11 or 12 minutes uh there but for a seventh round pick like you you could be doing worse for for production wise um in the MHL which is the Russian version of their Juniors um 12 games four goals nine assists 31 shots on goal just completely dominating in that facet so um yeah I I think one of those guys you’re just going to keep an eye on you never know if he’s ever actually going to come over or not but um that’s that’s really solid production for uh if I recall um guy who hates playing defense and they’ve never seen someone cheat for offense as much as him um that’s that’s some pretty nice Productions so overall like I said you gota be feeling really good about the potential in this 2023 draft class um you could be looking at four five six if everyone maybe but four at least four or five NHL players right Will Smith’s gonna be NHL player quit mus is gonna be NHL player David Ed is gonna be NHL player Casper Holton looks like he’s gon be an NHL player luuka Kon or Eric pamp of one of those guys like you’re looking at a huge huge building block type of draft for the Sharks uh if all these guys continue their strong development um and this this might be that class where you look back and you said Yep this is the class that turned the Sharks franchise around um you know this paired with the 2024 draft class but yeah man it’s this is the draft class where you say yep the the future is definitely teal uh so that’s G to be it for me today tomorrow I promise I promise I promise we will have more draft stuff it’s been uh been a week with trying to get that stuff kind of taken care of had to postpone stuff twice so my bad but anyway so we’ll have uh probably have three more episodes where we’ll do Prospect breakdowns um and then we’ll continue to look at the rest of the sharks um off season what they need to do we’ll probably have a uh I’ll probably do my top 10 sharks prospects list before the draft set and then I’ll probably do one after the draft draft too uh so plenty of good stuff here coming as we’re we’re rolling towards uh the draft guys we’re like two weeks away from the draft so uh make sure you guys are following wherever you get Podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon sharks follow me on Twitter at my fry hole till tomorrow bye friends [Music]
The San Jose Sharks 2023 NHL Draft class looks to be a foundational piece in their rebuild. Start with the three first-round picks, Will Smith, Quentin Musty, and David Edstrom, and how their draft plus one season finished. Look at Will Smith’s season at Boston College and the next step for him in the National Hockey League. Then, how Musty and Edstrom look to be key pieces in the Sharks’ future and where they will be next year. Then, look at how Kasper Halttunen’s game grew this season, what Brandon Svoboda needs to do at Boston University, and why Luca Cagnoni looks like a steal in the fourth round. Finish up with Axel Landen in the SHL, Eric Pohlkamp’s jump to the University of Denver, David Klee’s upcoming time at the University of North Dakota, and Yegor Rimashevsky’s production in the KHL.

One thing you said I'd have agreed with you but I'm not certain about now. I went to a Q&A a few weeks back with AGM Tom Holy and someone asked about Halttunen potentially playing in the AHL next year. Tom said Halttunen was not. It's possible he was mistaken but I'd think someone who actually plays a role in deciding when he gets called up would be clear about that.
At the basic level the CHL-NHL transfer agreement is simple but I really don't understand once you get into the weeds a bit.
The future is bright.
