Could The Columbus Blue Jackets Draft Jesse Pulkinen?

continuing our um March to the draft here we’ve got another Prospect profile for you H today we’re looking at Jesse penan who is a uh a name that not many people seem to know what to do with so we’re going to talk about why that is we’re going to talk about could he be one of the rare overages that goes and makes an impact after being taken in the first round like uh like gotov did in uh in 2020 and uh could he be a blue jacket uh could the blue jacket pick him up at 36th overall so we’re talking to Sam mcgilligan of uh Puck preps about all of this so I’m just going to get into my conversation with him the draft is getting closer and closer the bull jackets haven’t picked up a second first round pick yet but I’m not ruling it out especially with the news that uh Patrick l is uh is on the way out of Columbus or is going to attempt to be on the way out of Columbus so uh let’s do some more draft profiles I’ve got Samy Gilligan here and uh today we’re going to be talking about uh Jesse pinan who is a name that I feel like has been turning up more and more as we get closer to the draft and I’m not sure if that’s good news or bad news so let’s uh let’s get into that it’s wild news it’s everything to do with Jesse pulen in is wild everything I mean from how he plays on the ice to the fact we’ve got a almost 20-year-old being considered in the first round because he is an over Ager which sometimes I feel like when I’m seeing what people discussing and fans like oh yeah we should drop this guy in mid rounds it’s like you gotta remember this guy’s an over Ager doesn’t mean you know some overage or pixs works but uh he is I believe let me check that birthday of his but I believe like he’s real close to agent not of the draft he is a December 04 yeah all right so that’s pretty old but I mean he is a Enigma on the ice I my first three viewings of this guy at the very end of it I said he was a DND he’s not a DND they were three very bad viewings but it does kind of embody like what he is because when I started seeing his name get mentioned in top 32 top 50 usually of like some people’s back in like late winter I went watched again and again and again the three games that I did and I went what is this guy he is terrifying he is utter chaos with he’s on the ice some of the defensive reads that he makes are kind of sloppy but we’re not even talking about the reads like the decisions he makes it’s like I should guard the slot but that guy 10 feet from me looks like he needs an elbow to the face so then he goes and brings his elbow to the face but kind of is late to the party and doesn’t do anything with it so this was like the impression I came with with early on just bad decision- making defensively bad stick positioning bad you know body positioning interesting decisions being made in terms of when to lead the slot uh semi not good Rush defense but that was the one thing I was like okay I kind of see it and every time he touched the puck I was terrified then on the fourth game I watched I did this as a with a joint viewing with Will scouch and the two of us watched him together it was the most ridiculous view I I think I’ve ever seen of a player of both good and bad the highs were Sensational he was doing unbelievable things he was making quick passes through multiple defensive layers he was dangling people he was just playing Yeehaw hockey to his extremist just like every chance to pinch for offense he took everything he could possibly do to drive play forward but he also did it with complete Reckless abandon and it was simultaneous a nightmare he was like one sick play followed by a disaster followed by a sick play followed by a disaster in the same shift it was I couldn’t keep track of what I was seeing but I immediately took him off the dndd list I placed him somewhere in the middle of the second round he’s kind of stuck around there for the rest of the year so what you’re saying is highrisk high reward unbelievably highrisk High reward High payoff but I don’t he’s not a player I think you can ever see the recklessness being taken away he’s going to be that guy who when he’s on your team you’re like why why did you do that there’s no way you thought that was the play but that same thought process is g to make is going to be what makes you go holy look what this guy does two three shifts later there is no separation of church and state here this is who he is I I they’re 18 it’s one thing you can sit there and go yeah okay there’s time to refine the out they in Pro Hockey and stuff like this that but this guy is not 18 he’s an over Ager he is a almost he’s a D+ one but he’s almost a d plus two he is spooky just spooky and I don’t really know about using a first round pick on him per se in fact I just can’t the it’s hard for me to look at everybody who’s available and go what are they going to be and with the amount of post-draft development that panin got what will become and will they be as terrifying because right now the NHL would eat panin alive just as much as it would eat any other Defender if it it feel like some people want to see him being disgusted or treating him as if he is 18 and he’s not so old enough to know better and yet yeah it it’s fine because there this is it’s not like he’s the only high-risk High reward player that’s come along a lot of them are draft eliges at the time I mean Andrew strothman just not too long ago with Columbus he was who I immediately thought of when you said he is kind of like this like oh that sounds like a guy we have in the system already yes he kind of does fit the Andrew stth Mill if I had to compare him to so uh strathman comparison for this draft it would be Jesse pinan but what’s crazy with pinan is that it does seem like there’s more to work with just because he’s bigger he does have good skating ability he has he can use his reach he he he has tendencies that work very well in Pro Hockey when you see them work you’re like more of that please and it’s just it’s forever accompanied by the chaos it it’s innate within him it almost feels like it’s hard to come up with a development plan that maximizes what he is without bringing the flaws in I feel like it mostly just comes down to how much can you change as decision making and from this now it’s becomes like you have to meet with the player and really understand what they see on the ice and how they process things like what is what’s going through their mind when they’re making decisions like this so maybe you can find a way to be like just do this and don’t do that but it it it sounds that simple but it never is that simple or else every Prospect would be developed great right like some people just think a certain way and eventually it hits a wall but when they’re athletic enough it you know works out at these levels of play which I mean he plays Lea that’s not bad level of play but that’s a that’s a first round pick you’re using yeah Bob Mackenzie has him at 33rd I believe on the in his rankings is that about so like just into the second round I know you said you had him kind of in the middle of the second round at 36 currently unless they decide to give it to the Flyers um which they could decide to do after the first round is complete I think is that kind of a a range that you would expect pulan to be to be taken in I I would be surprised if he fell beyond that he is big he is range he plays with skill he can be a physical merer which NHL teams love it it would be a surprise to see him go super high it would be a surprise to see him so yes I think that like late first early second range is where he’s going to go um I would be very cautious of what team takes him in the first though like the he’s he would be a terrifying first player to draft if it’s your second pick even better your third pick and you have like two early seconds or something like that I don’t think a team does but just let’s say you trade up or something like that if he’s your third player you’re take then sure go for the risk why not second player okay first huh it it’s it’s risky very risky it’s just Jack have had some success with overage players obviously there jov draft that’s the first thing I was just about to say 2020 um it was 2020 wasn’t it yeah I believe where they drafted him and the on air draft expert was like I have no idea who this guy is um so you know they’ve they’ve had success with with over eight picks before but I don’t know that lightning is necessarily going to strike twice in uh in this case I think chov was a lot more projectable than uh than pulen in a minute I’ve got more of my conversation with Sam about panan but first I want to bring up one of our partners the mobile game ultimate hockey GM if you ultimate hockey GM start your Dynasty today um I do want to ask about you know so you talked about how he’s always going to have kind of this level of recklessness and Chaos in his game is there a worry that if you kind of like train that out of him you’ll lose some of the parts that make him good uh that could be a thing I think this goes into a bit almost like a psychology thing where it really just depends on the fit between the development staff working with him and the player himself without knowing him personally I can’t really say but I can say that he would not be the first player to be developed to have everything oomy taken out of their game where it’s like see you make the mistake because you try and do this and now you’re doing this instead so you’re just it’s all cut out and then then it’s like well what are you drafting them for the point of some of these players is to draft them and kind of like refine it as much as you can but players don’t usually change this much because they the player they are today started forming when they were 12 six years ago it developed quite literally as they developed as teenagers it’s really hard to take someone’s player identity and just like 180 it usually what happens is that a team just doesn’t gel with whoever they picked the scouts and the dev staff just weren’t kind of on the same page and the dev staff or it it often as well the player it’s not always like the team more often it’s the player just doesn’t maximize everything the way that they have to it’s just kind of leaves them in this either a husky version of themselves where nothing really special is there or a really flawed version of of their best strengths that they can’t really find a way to use regularly because the the pace of the game just kind of caught up to them with Jesse I feel like if you drafted them you no matter what you don’t risk losing the rough what’s the best word chaos chaos is the best word it’s the only one that keeps coming to mind like you don’t want to lose that raw chaos that he comes with because sure it will lead to mistakes but it’s what d drives the bus for him it’s what makes him Thrive as a player the best moments come from the exact same thought process that creates the worst unless you’re a psychologist who can really go into the player I don’t think you’re going to be able to separate the two so don’t kill both in the attempt of improving a couple details the Blue Jackets I feel like uh generally thought of as a decent team for in terms of development their development team seems pretty pretty on the board is is this an organization that you think penan could come into and maybe get a little bit more of that refinement and take a little I but not all of it I think so Columbus is a very interesting organization because every time you feel like you have a read on how they approach the draft they go at it the next year and it’s a little different and they like last year it was value value value I couldn’t believe the value they got at the draft 2020 everyone was sitting there like what are they doing it two entirely different processes but it came from the same team and both sets seem to be developing fine granted 23 still a little early uh with Columbus specifically I look at David Urich who they picked obviously sixth overall and he was a high-end high-end player but he was a little similar of that he had his moments where you’re like Yay but for the most part he was just a killer out there with the puck every time he had they play panin is almost I guess it never really clicked to me right now panin is in little ways like a poor man’s e doesn’t have that same sense with the puck and E is much more involved in driving play forward and is also just a meaner Defender and a better Defender but the way that they approach the game is very similar EUR and pin and will both go for those aggressive pinches when they see the chance they will go for the hit when they see the chance to a big hit out they will grab the puck and if they see a Quick Lane they will fire it up there without any hesitation and it they might have missed one Defender who was lurking close by and might pick it off or something like that pocon and just is more raw more inconsistent right now and he’s not that much younger than Ur is so I guess that’s the St the point of like you can look at it and start to see where maybe the concern is because e Che at 18 was already levels beyond what Pokemon is now gotten so much better since you can see that’s a top four NHL defenseman minimum and there’s still room to grow all the way up to the first pairing whereas pulan and you’re still kind of going like I don’t know if you get NHL minutes yet but they’re not too far in age they have similar strengths and weaknesses similar flaws kind of archetypically similar overall so yeah it’s I think Columbus is a team that can do a lot with them it’s just they could a lot with a lot of guys in that range this is a very like that whole range is going to be lots of Developmental gems and some of them are also going to be players with size and skill and things like that so do you want to put all your eggs in the bulanin basket if the if the fit is right then you go for it and I feel like Columbus you know if they make the pick that’s one of the teams where I go they know the fits right so let’s just kind of see what happens I’ve got more of my conversation with Sam about pulen and about who the Blue Jackets should take at Fourth overall but first i’ got to tell you about eBay Motors passion driv and patience is the formula for winning championships it’s also what keeps you up ride or die alive eBay motor has everything you need to maintain your vehicle and every other team in in the league sometimes you know fun but also sometimes a little bit stressful obviously the thing about Columbus is they have approximately 87 defense prospects right now um where does panan fit into the if if if they do end up taking him at you know 36th or whatever how does he fit into their kind of ranking of of Defense Prospect and they might take a defenseman at at Fourth well I say in the back half of the top 10 most likely kind of are you thinking like in terms of where he fits up against like Corson kulibin and Sam kazco kind of yeah those types of guys he can roughly be put in with them I mean Corson kouman actually is an interesting another interesting player because he suffered from they’re not similar players but they have that similar issue of Corson sometimes just does stuff and you’re like why um he fits in that range probably just a little bit behind kouman just because pulan and being older at the time of the draft and stuff like that but at the same time kman wasn’t 2022 he was 21 wasn’t he he yes he was the K Johnson draft okay so yeah and kouman with the first round picks that’s right that was an interesting draft okay so probably around the Corson coan’s range either one spot above one spot below I wouldn’t put them above like the mats the eurs like those types of guys though like they’re they’re a clear tier ahead yeah for sure let’s talk a little bit about um the draft that’s coming up blue jacket are sitting at Fourth overall uh there’s again we talked about this a little bit off mic um before before we started recording there’s lots of Rumblings about who could be available people are saying that linov is going to go second which could free up a guy like demidov to go fourth um but if we assume that the sensible thing happens and it goes celebrini demidov leov 1 two and three who do you at Fourth overall berley yep like it’s it’s been pretty much since the year started and I got fully familiar with every player my list went one two three of celebrini demov and Ken and it never changed not a single time and it won’t change until the end of the year Lindstrom is the only thing that comes close and I can see an NHL team liking Lindstrom a lot more D he’s a 65 guy who skates really really well has great use of his reach and great skill great shot fantastic high-end moments and you’re just looking at him and like even if it doesn’t all you know come together and become a bit more coherent the tools that are there are just so enticing it’s like it’s easy to see some level of NHL play personally Berkeley K being 510 and a half or 5’11 or whatever he is does not concern me in the slightest as a center because what’s one extra inch of height supposed to do when he’s this goodly makes you into a much better Center obviously that that yeah apparently I feel like wings spin is the thing that matters almost more than height but we’re not talking about wings spin we’re always talking about height uh Ken plays like a fantastic Center positionally he’s just everywhere he’s supposed to be at all times and it’s just a play driving machine just a monster out there what one of the three players who when you watch them you just go yeah that’s a level of offense no one else has okay sick take him and you can see like the biggest concern with him his defensive responsibilities and how there are some moments of disengagement and etc etc but it’s not the first time you’ve seen a high highend Center on a semi kind of weak offensively team especially if they’re not there be told we don’t care about the defensive end go nuts offensively go nuts in transition just get points and do everything we the rest of the team can’t do and they’ll do that job that that’s not the first time we’ve seen it happen I don’t know if it’s what’s happened with Spokane this year but I think it kind of is what’s happening because I would be floored if a guy like Berkeley Ken two years from now as smart as he is went into the defensive Zone and went I don’t know what to do like these guys are typically completely in line with everything that’s happening in the game it’s a matter of where they put their effort kon’s got a 200 foot game bar underneath and completely convinced a highend 200 foot game exists there makes it the easiest thing in the world if you don’t have celebrini which none of us do unfortunately and you don’t have demidov which we all likely will and where all of our teams will pass on him and make us sad then get excited for Berkeley katton so your team can also be sad when they pass on him too yeah that’s the theme the theme of the draft this year is sadness it feels like that yes very much so it’s gonna be it’s going to be fine I have I have faith in this team question mark um if people want to learn more about the draft want to learn more about Berkeley Kon or Jesse pinan or k Lindstrom or whoever where can people find you in your work online you can find me always and mine will be posted with all the writeups that I do this time it’s not that long you can also find my work at Puck preps as well subscribe for anything to do with North American prospects not just
