The Milwaukee Brewers Keep Stacking Success
does Blake Perkins fit into the future of this team he came back and redeemed himself nicely on Sunday a big time blunder on Friday we’ll get to all that coming up next here on lockon Brewer you are locked on Brewers your daily Milwaukee Brewers podcast part of the lockon podcast Network your team every day Perkins came up huge on Sunday afternoon and Friday’s lost that devastating loss on Friday night did not snowball into the final two games of the series with the Reds we’ll get into that coming up here in a little bit Brewers might be down a key player going into this road trip we’ll get to that as well Pat Murphy I’m watching him this weekend and I found myself thinking he reminds me of not only one but two Brewer managers in days gone by we’ll get to that as well talk about the weekend that was Snoop Dogg made an appearance at amfam field this weekend and we’ll get into the Angels who the Brewers begin a three- game set with coming up on uh Monday night how you doing cheze Freeman please subscribe to the YouTube channel as well it’s all there and it is all free Blake Perkins interesting about Blake Perkins I’m not sure that he is part of my future on this team uh as of right now I would say I look I’d still look for better options in center field he gives you such great defense in center field he does we love what he does defensively threw a runout at home plate on Sunday to end that game with the red um has made some spectacular catches made a great catch in the eighth inning as a matter of fact on Sunday afternoon so he’s done the job many many times defensively you know he’s sitting like 247 as of uh you know as of Sunday going after Sunday’s game um and what he said on Friday was a little odd I’ve never heard a major Leaguer talk about a moment being too big for them remember Tak you back to Friday night he laid down tried laying down a bunt to finish off that game Runners on second and third tried laying down a bun I I don’t know I still don’t know what he was thinking you part of me thought see bunny for a base hit did he think there was one out and a runner at third a lot of things went through my mind when I saw him do that I don’t think I’ve ever seen a baseball game in the thousands of baseball games I’ve seen a runner a hitter at the plate trying to lay down a bunt and a pop out for the final out of the game or a final out of the game being recorded on a bunt it just was really odd but Pat Murphy seems to really have his back and Murphy has a lot of players back we’ll get into that a little bit later on but he just talks about how much he likes Perkins he’s always talking about perk his postgame and all that and he’s got he’s got he’s throwing his weight behind Perkins and how much he loves him and his abilities and you know that he knew that Perkins was going to bounce back and eventually make up for that error on Friday and murf talked candidly after the game on Friday night about Perkins and and making a mistake a young guy mistake and he says hey young guys on teams are gonna make mistakes like that you’re gonna have to live with mistakes like that but I was again I was surprised with Perkin Perkins in this postgame interview on Friday enjoyed it because he didn’t first of all he came to the he he he was by his locker or in the locker room and he didn’t avoid the questions some guys in that situation will would know where to be found I love the fact that that guy was a standup guy in front of his locker or near the locker and talked about owning the moment as a mistake but when he talked about he didn’t want to be a hero I I didn’t quite understand that because he has been a hero this year he has come up with big base hits he’s come up with home runs key home runs he’s come up with big defensive plays he has been the hero he was talking about himself like he’s you know like he’s not a starting center fielder in in sports you got to have confidence when you play you have to be confident you have to have a certain Pride a Cockiness when you play any type of sports especially at the major league level you have to have that pride inside yourself and I don’t think I’ve ever heard a professional say well I just didn’t uh the moment basically was just too big for me I didn’t want to be a hero in that game I didn’t quite understand it I was stunned and I went back and I listened to that interview a few times and it just struck me as kind of odd um I don’t think he he seems like such a good kid he’s 27 years old so I don’t want to say kid but he seems like a really good guy I don’t know if he really meant well you know what I didn’t want to be a hero in that moment maybe he meant something else I don’t know but as far as his future with the Milwaukee Brewers and I said this even before that defensively if I could get what he does defensively off offensively from him it’d be great you know 2475 home runs that’s not enough for me on a championship level team okay uh I I think there’s a better upside that get Garrett’s Garrett Mitchell’s got to stay healthy all right he’s got to stay healthy and from the looks of it Mitchell is uh feels ready to come back and play at the major league level but as murf was saying uh the reports the scouts off say that Mitchell still looks looks a little rusty uh in his rehab assignment so yeah I think the Brewers could do better in center field will they trade Perkins down I don’t know what the kind of trade value he has but I’m just telling you right now I don’t think Blake Perkins is my center fielder of the future on this team defensively fantastic I told you that about Andrew monasterio last year when the guy was playing Third Base I said that guy is not a starting infielder in Major League Baseball going forward not if you want to win championships and I was I was pretty right on about that uh and Blake Perkins God bless the guy okay he’s made some spectacular defensive plays and he really set the tone helped the team set the tone in the first three and a half weeks of the season but I’d like to see the Brewers offensively do better than what they could do in center field maybe that’s Garrett Mitchell maybe it’s not maybe it’s not all right we come back we’ll give some injury updates and Pat Murphy that reminds me of a few different managers in Brewers past we’ll get to that coming up next here on lockon have you along here as get back to work on a Monday and we’re kicking into the summer here lockon Brewers Czech Freeman part of lockon podcast Network we are your team every day Brewer start a West Coast road trip and of course the game on SiriusXM the sxm app 8:35 Central Time coming up on Monday night you get all 162 Brewers baseballs and Sirius and Sirius XM app all right uh William contras no doubt the MVP of the series but he went down with a con iuss symptoms let’s say after the game they checked him out he was not available to talk to reporters after the game he was packing up his equipment for the West Coast but he was no reporters talk to him to get an evaluation which means he’s sounds like they’re going to evaluate him they are evaluating him for a concussion uh which losing Kus is Big he has started in 70 of 71 game so far that is just amazing in today’s baseball to be on that a role to have played in 70 of your first 71 games from the catcher spot where whether he’s caught or DH I don’t care uh I don’t care if he dhed every game playing 70 of your first 71 games in today’s professional sports world is just some some kind of it’s got to be some kind of record can’t be too many guys in baseball who’ve started 99% of their game so far this year year ultimately you got to take a rest uh y rebe it looks like he’s going to have knee surgery things have not gone well for him uh you know he’s got to serve that suspension when he get gets back he had that little tussle he got into and baseball find him suspended him for four games and he’s down in the minor leagues and now he’s gonna have knee surgery uh Murphy says it might not be surgery where they got to do a lot of work down there with his knee uh in the meniscus uh might be a little clean up whatever he may be back pitching again this year we’ll see but for the future they’re going to need your rebat I mean lucky it’s not an elbow or his shoulder it’s his knee he’s going to be fine uh but matter of fact is the you know he’s going to have to come up and serve the suspension before he pitches another game but man it’s just I have I have high hopes for ybe on this in the future maybe even you know this season I was hoping uh his command uh is always suspect but I think your rebay definitely is part of this future hey when a guy throws 100 or 100 plus you never give up on him so uh hopefully gets the knee cleaned up comes back but I just think what what bothers me is I mean they got Brewers have enough relievers to cover up for your rebay but the problem here is you know just taking some weeks and weeks off is going to stunt his growth as a major league ball player I’m not saying he’s not going to get back to the way he was throwing 100 plus but still you want him to work on his command and get better and that just just hurts him they have enough relievers to cover up for him but you love to have him back Gasser I’m telling you getting this third opinion on Robert Gasser uh is just taking forever it is just taking forever and finally it’s going to be we found out it’s going to be Tuesday tomorrow the 18th so June 18th he’s getting the elbow looked out at a again and hopefully by when edday morning’s podcast the podcast that drops overnight Tuesday night we’ll have an update on Robert Gasser you know again all indications are that he’s probably done for the year uh but whether or not he has surgery or not we’ll see you know again the thing is does he have surgery now so he uh that does not delay his growth either uh have it now or do you rehab it but then find out like six months later you know he needed that surgery after all and then it just pushes back his gr as a player so that’s the update really on those three guys there’s obviously there’s several others Hall you know working on getting back H um Joe Ross you know several other guys as well but I just want to touch on those three give an update on ybe contris and gaser we’ll see if your rebay I’m sorry we’ll see if contras is in the lineup coming up on Monday night in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels uh two managers Pat Murphy reminds me of I want to go brief on this two managers Murphy reminds me of the first one was George bamberger who managed this team from 78 through 80 George bamberger managed winning baseball with the Brewers his first three years suffered a heart attack and um you know eventually some other managers took over he later came back in 85 and manag but uh the team was not very good uh after going to the Mets uh so he but he was a players manager he was a Play Just Like Murph is he was an older guy a players manager and the thing I remember most about bamberger as a manager is when Gorman Thomas struck out opening day of 1978 bamburger’s first year the first year the Brewers had a winning team in 78 he told Gorman was all Gorman tells the story Gorman talk talks about how he’s ejected in front of his locker and his head down struck out four times on opening day and bamberger says don’t worry Gorman you’re going to be back in the lineup tomorrow and the rest is history Gorman went on to hit 32 home runs in uh 1978 and became a a folk hero in in Milwaukee for the next several years until they traded him in 83 uh but yeah George bamberger players manager and of course Harvey Keane Harvey Keane who took over in June of 82 managed the Brewers to their first World Series appearance and only World Series appearance and was fired at the end of 83 another guy who was a players manager a guy who but both of these guys were short-term fits as managers Harvey Kean you know again he went to the World Series in 82 but by by the end of 83 um they still had won like 87 games but Harry Dalton said well uh Harvey is just not uh I I don’t see him going forward having the pulse of this team so he thought Harvey was the perfect fit for 82 not necessarily going forward and Harvey after that was out of baseball but he was a legend for the two years he was here but two guys bamburger and Harvey Keem two guys who had the backs of their players all the time you’d go into the locker room and interview the manager after the game two guys would have their backs all the time and this is exactly how Pat Murphy is older guy okay he’s not a or AR guy by by any means he always has a good spin on something he’s going to be objective he’s going to be objective like he talked about Perkins after Friday night’s game and then he’s going come back on Sunday and throw him a bouquet of roses Pat him on the back you know he it just when you hear Murphy talk when you hear like those those veterans like the Murphy George bamberger Harvey King guys who’ve been around the game for a long time they just have a different way of handling themselves and handling their teams I feel than maybe some of the younger managers but it is shown too that those older managers don’t have a short shelf they don’t have a long shelf life they have a short shelf life two older managers in the past short life Ken Maka was an older manager um and he did not have he just didn’t relate to anybody so he was not a players manager but Keane was bamberger was and Murphy definitely it’s a players manager and that term gets used a lot but just a guy who the players of the play for they have their back and everybody in that locker room on the same page just go in that locker room you can just sense a and it was that way with Council I’m not saying it wasn’t but Murphy is just one of those guys who’s easygo and you know EV went a couple of weeks ago when contras and adamus went into the went into his office and said hey we kind of like to play you know we don’t want to sit out of this game we like to play it wasn’t like Murphy you know one of the old school guys who grumpy guys just nope you’re not playing nope nope nope no he he he gets it he gets the he gets his team so yeah Murphy to me I think the guy’s manager of the year I think very highly I think he was the absolute best choice for this team absolute best choice and of course he’s proven it uh that I’m him all right we come back we’ll get the weekend takeaways we’ll look ahead of the angels as well coming up here on lockon Brewers part of lockon podcast Network we are your team every day prize picks prize picks great way to go priz picks if you uh think you know your team uh think you want think you know baseball or maybe in basketball the finals on Monday night NHL who you think is going to score more or less on two to six player stat projections and you are odds for that as well as he did on Sunday so price pick is the way to go download the app use the promo code lock down MLB your first deposit match up to 100 bucks with price picks check Freeman here on lockon Brewers down the stretch we go on lock on Brewers part of lock on podcast denark we are your team every day my weekend takeaways Friday night we talked about Perkins getting thrown out uh bunting uh to end that game there was a runner throwing out at the place B Bowers was throwing out of the plate Murphy made a mistake he said later on Saturday says he should have opted for Oliver Dunn possibly to pinch run uh late in the game for Hoskins who reached on a walk he said or reached on an air that maybe he should have went with Dunn although Dunn had a base Runing error recently that kind of stuck in the craw of Murphy and he decided to go with Bowers and and Bowers got thrown out heck of an effort by Bowers but got thrown out in that ninth inning as well Brewers lost six to five and again the these losses don’t drag the Brewers down they lose they come back and they come back bouncing very well and and they won the next two games once again winning two of three in a series so I thought that was good again winning on Saturday Ortiz with the with the bomb the three run home run they win 3-1 I thought Colin Ray pitched well enough to win on Satur on Sunday and certain uh the offense got going Willie ad Damas hit a three-run blast we talked about Perkins throwing out the runner at home plate to end the game how about that he bunts a popup bunt to end the game on Friday night and then Sunday defensively throws the runner out just want perk to know hey play with some confidence man this is your team you belong in the majors do do what you can man what I said earlier about Perkins maybe Perkins I don’t know if he’s my future I I don’t think he’s the future at center field but man play with some confidence we need you now you could earn that spot you could change my opinion you change opinion to other people about you uh being the future at center field but let’s uh let’s continue to get let’s get back on track offensively be better more consistent he’s very very much a streaky hitter um Dela Cruz boy that guy I’ll say it again uh boy he steals second and then the pickoff play at second which Colin Ray shouldn’t have tried picking off that guy with two outs uh ball went short center field and I thought oh no I gota I want to close my eyes but man you just can’t help watch Del Cruz just sail around the base pass just I mean it’s pretty to watch takes three steps to get from home and the head first slide I mean it is it’s unfortunate he’s on the Reds because you’d love to see a guy like that with a Brewers it’s just man amazing um so Dela Cruz just watching that guy play he’s got a lot to learn he’s got a lot of things to learn about the game he had three errors on Friday night uh Snoop Dogg at the game on Saturday that was the buzz all weekend long Friday night oh Snoop Dog’s gonna be here Saturday Saturday was here all the media took pictures of him and all that um and he was in the broadcast booth on the field he took some batting practice he just Blended in well he got an invite from the team and Snoop Dogg was here and it wasn’t like he was pretending that he was above everybody else else you know sometimes an Entertainer or Superstar like that comes in and uh you know they they they they think that you know they’re on a higher level than everybody else man he was he was fitting in being wanted to be part of the team talking with the media talk with everybody he ran into shook their hand and man that guy was amazing I I’ll admit yeah do I listen to Snoop Dogg music absolutely not okay I’m not a big I’m not a big fan that music doesn’t appeal to me but man watching that guy operate this weekend and how he handles himself man Big Time props love it love it love it I know enough the guy’s a very talented I maybe his music doesn’t appeal to me but I know the guy’s an amazing amazing performer and he’s got a lot of fans okay he knows how to Market himself but man A++ on his appearance this week again in Milwaukee with the Brewers all right one more thing the angels are coming we’re going to actually going to California facing the Anaheim LA Angels or whatever they’re called These Days Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim the California Angels uh Rodriguez is gonna pitch again he felt when he made his major league debut last night he thought he last week he learned a few things feels he’s going to be better had a clean first inning didn’t go great after that and they got him out of there so he gets the start in his first game against the Angels uh the angels are 14 games under the 500 Mark or so Ron Washington is their manager he’ been out of the game for 10 years uh he is not happy with the way things are going they’re not executing they’re losing a lot of one- Run games and they’re a bad baseball team right now Mike Trout uh in and out of the lineup is only played like in 29 games this year of course they traded away Otani in the or not traded away he signed with the Dodgers in the off season they chose not to resign him I think that the Dodgers out bit everybody in that deal uh but you know you had trout noani on this roster and you couldn’t make things happen because the Angels were so bad at player Personnel moves they drafted poorly and their free agent sightings were terrible and the angels haven’t been in the postseason since 2014 for that reason right there never able to build around trout and Otani and that’s why the games of the 500 Mark no trout in the lineup otani’s in Los Angeles and the angels are bad so still got to go in there and play some good baseball and win these games got to take two of three at least they’re taking two of three they’ve won three Series in a row now the Brewers since getting swept in Philadelphia they took two of three from Detroit two of three earlier this week against Toronto and two or three this weekend against Cincinnati let’s keep it going against the Angels this weekend first West Coast Road Trip of the Year br’s got another West Coast Road Trip coming up in July as well it’s going to do it for me Chuck Freeman locked on Brewers part of locked on podcast Network you get us on Google Spotify apple on i like perkins, i dont mind the bunt attempt, the more you bunt the better is my philosophy, brewers need a 1st baseman, thats their only hole right now.
When it comes to Peralta, you, along with many Brewer fans (which I have been for 50+ years), are in denial.
He's just not that good.
Ace by default is a copout, IMO.
Package him for a better starter by the trade deadline.
If you would have said in the beginning of the season the Brewer's centerfielder was going to hit 250 w/ moderate power and gold glove D, I would have said heck ya. He's improved in every aspect except plate discipline. If he could move 30 points higher OBP that's borderline all-star material.
Pat Murphy knows this is his last and possibly only shot at a major league manager. He’s enjoying his time and not throwing his players under the bus to protect his ass cause, let’s face it, this will be his only manager job. Not to say he’s doing a bad job but at his age does he wanna move and start fresh under a front office he might have connections to? I don’t think so. He’s the guy in Milwaukee till he either doesn’t want it any more or the team underproduces. Then it’s Rickie’s time to show his worth.
I would love if the Brewers got Jesus Luzardo -who absolutely has the potential to be a great #2. Or maybe even an ace in the right program. I thought he was better last year, but he had a high whip. A decent ERA at 3.58. I just know he got me a lot of fantasy points and there were some games where he was absolutely dominant. He’s stinking it up this year, but I believe if he was on the brewers he would realize his full potential. He has a lot of strikeout power and I don’t think it would take TOO much to get him. Heck, maybe we could even get Jazz Chisholm. We could find a spot in the outfield for him. But that may be wishful thinking. Ha.
I would absolutely love Garret Crochet- but I think it would cost a fortune to get him. And apparently the White Sox GM, Chris Getz, really plays hard ball. (No pun intended.) I guess he wanted 4 prospects from the Braves for Dylan Cease. High end prospects as well, reportedly. But the Braves were unwilling, obviously. I guess The only guys I consider untouchable are Misorowski and Tyler Black I reckon. Gasser probably as well, if he’s still considered a prospect- regardless, as a young piece. I really wouldn’t want to give up Misorowski. But what we hope Misorowski could be is a righty version of what Crochet is now. That being said, as they say, “There’s No Such Thing As a Pitching Prospect.” And to a certain extend, that anecdote has merit. I’d love to list some examples, but there are #1. So many, and #2. It would take a rather long time. But some recent examples include Nate Pearson, (Jays) Forrest Whitley (Astros) Mark Appel, (Also Astros) Asa Lacey (Royals) Sixto Sanchez (Phillies and Marlins) Brendan McKay (Rays) Luis Patiño (Padres) Spencer Howard (Phillies) I mean, the list goes one and on, these guys are pretty much just from the last ten or so years. But I’m sure many will recognize a handful if not most names. My criteria for selecting these pitchers were either their status as high draft picks, or their position on prospect lists. (Well, for the sake of conserving time- I only referenced MLB Pipeline’s list. So some players rankings may not correspond with the other main prospect publications like Baseball America or Prospectus and their positions may not be consistent. And how about our own Brewer’s prospect, Jimmy Nelson. I remember watching that guy dominate the Marlins one game during his first few appearances, and he had this nasty, nasty breaking pitch. And the coaches messed with his repertoire and delivery, and I never saw that pitch again. And look how he’s turned out. Additionally, we’re witnessing this phenomenon occur in real time with Ashby. I want Ashby to turn into the guy I think he has the potential to be- but with injuries, and an inability to gain a consistent grasp of both control and command- he could have all the filth and stuff in the world, and it won’t matter if he is unable to stop walking so many batters. Of course it’s not that simple, but that seems to be the main issue plaguing him. That being said, I’m hoping he can turn into something. I’d rather him prove me wrong than him serve as just another inclusion to the list I assembled above.) Now, I believe in Miserowski and his ability to one day soon come up and be major impact arm in the big leagues. Although, at the moment I am uncertain of his ability to be a starter right from the jump. I think that perhaps he should start out as a reliever, move to a more high leverage role if he succeeds- and then build him up to become a starter (unless of course he is so dominant and incredible as a high leverage reliever and seems like the closer of the future. But I doubt that will be the case as the Brewer’s seem to be able to manufacture effective arms and high leverage relievers like nothing, and I believe they see Misorowski as an eventual starter. He’ll probably take the Burnes/Peralta route- although maybe they’ll build him up enough in the minors to gain the confidence to start him out in the rotation. However, if they choose to bring him up this year for a post season push- I’m sure it will be in a bullpen role. Which I’m fine with and believe that is how they should approach his development. But what do I know? Ha.)
Crochet has been a true ace, and his 3.16 ERA (which is still stellar) is deceptive and inflated, and after doing the math, the only reason it’s that high is because of two really bad blow up starts in April. Without those, it would be something like 1.36 if I remember correctly. And he leads the league in Ks and has an amazing whip and all great statcast numbers. The issue with him is he has only ever pitched like 70 innings. So there will probably be a limit. Or maybe even a shut down. He’s only 25 but only has two more years left. Anyways I think he would fit perfectly on the brewers and maybe they could extend him for cheap considering his injury history and the fact that he has four major league seasons under his belt and never really even a full year. And perhaps (although unlikely) they could package him with Luis Robert, who has all the offensive and defensive talent in the world, and is already under contract. Or maybe Eloy Jimenez as was rumored last year. Although I highly doubt this will occur, and surely it will take a king’s ransom to acquire one let alone both. But hey, you never know. He’s the true ace the Brewers
in my mindso desperately need.Should the Tigers find themselves out of the wild card race come late July, I would also love Jack Flaherty, who has pitched like an ace as well. But im not sure if the tigers would be willing to sell as they might still be in the race as aforementioned. We’ll see. He’d also a be a rental, so perhaps they would be more willing to part with him, and for much cheaper than a Crochet or Luzardo. he’s been amazing too and is near the lead in ks. Another outing today too with zero runs allowed. But only 5 ip. However he’s walking absolutely nobody. And if you look at his statcast page: it’s all blood red. He destroyed the Brewers for so many years, it’s time we get some payback!
We need starting pitching and its unavoidable . Rodriguez is not an actual answer and Freddy looks injured and seems to be hiding it.
In regard to Willy Adames I can only say that if they want to win now, then you keep him. If you want to win in the future, you keep him. Adames is the glue of this team. Go to a game and you will see all of the intangibles that he brings to the team. And of course his clutch performances speak for themselves.
