in everyday or all you have to do is just fever you get Podcast or you can watch this on YouTube as well and Ryan wowski was officially named or introduced I guess as the Sharks new head coach with his press conference so we heard from him uh we heard from Mike Greer so we have some clips from the press conference we’re going to talk about uh some of the the big takeaways from it and why I think wowski is the right dude right now for the sharks um so before we get into all that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more right now new customers get $200 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet that’s 200 bucks bucks in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet visit fanduel.com lockon to get started so Ryan wovi was named the official uh head coach of the San Jose Sharks nice little J got the cool Jersey um and everything they did a nice video of of them making the number 24 jersey for warsofsky but um after listening to warski uh and his press conference I’m in I’m 100% in I think this is the perfect hire for the sharks um and we have a bunch of clips that we’ll get to here in a minute for it but um his one you could tell just how much this meant to him with again especially with his journey right coming from a division three School uh working his way up through the ECHL um I’ve been to a stingray game in in South Carolina um you know South Carolina not known for the the biggest uh Charleston not known for the biggest being the biggest hockey town in the world um but turning that program into a winner then you know his work he did with Chicago winning uh Cal there before jumping to the Sharks and um how much this meant to him and just how emotionally gotten how he talked you know was thanking everybody and you know brought up David Quinn and thaning him and how important he was in in in his development right right but Quinn or not Quinn sorry wowski harping on the development and how important that is to to him and especially with the sharks right now I mean they they’re not afraid of mentioning one who they’re going to draft at number one we’ll get to that in a little bit um and two like this is a young team but we feel really confident in what we’re building here and um having the right people around uh to build it up and it’s going to be a slow process but they they think and I think as well warski is going to be that guy who can is going to go through some of the bumps and bruises of of being a first year coach and along with players who were going through the bumps and bruises of being rookies or first year players or seconde players um in the NHL and just hearing just how passionate he is and how he wants to really be the guy to help kind of turn this thing around I’m 100% in on Ryan warski being the right hire for the Sharks and one of the things that uh really stood out to me is is this clip right here which I’m GNA play if you’re watching on YouTube you’ll get the full clip um if you’re listening audio of course you’ll get the audio version of it but this is gonna be Ryan wowski uh talking about all these clips are from the San Jose Sharks uh so um you can go watch the full press conference on the Sharks audio network but that’s where I clip these from so uh here’s Ryan warski talking about like kind of his coaching philosophy obviously the role changes the title changes um The Players know me if I go in there and act some like I’m not they’re going to see right through me so um I’m going to be myself I’ll probably be a little bit more demanding and and a little bit more um black and white at times um a little bit more harder on on some on some you know topics and some issues but um I’m still going to have the relationship I’m a relationship based coach um you know I’m I’m going to you know kind of push these guys and challenge them um but you know I want these guys to have individual goals I think that’s really important but we have to remember we’re not going to get those individual goals if we don’t play as a team so um again not a whole lot’s going to change I’ve done this been in this role situation before like you said uh and I’m excited about it I’m a relationship based coach and that right there really got to me especially with how young this roster is going to be and I know there there’s the uh like yeah you know there’s the generational you know Old School come show up to work etc etc and just do your job but athletes are different they’re just more polished right and you see that even like the way M cini who just turned 18 the way he carries himself um in interviews the way he acts you know like there’s just a different level polish you know to these guys especially these top prospects and um you know I’ve been lucky enough to talk to a bunch of them and I’m like guys who get drafted in the you know the first couple rounds compared to guys who maybe get drafted in in the later rounds and maybe haven’t spent as much time around the media there’s just a different like polish in the way these guys are acting as they go even 17 18 19 year old like kids who but they’ve been through this kind of media training in the way um just brought up and you know I think for wowski being a guy who could connect to these young players um it’s going to be huge for the Sharks and just the way that this thing is going to be built um you know and I think just having a different is even though he’s been here for the past couple Seasons just having a different voice um and maybe a guy who can explain a little bit more of the why um and what he wants to do there I think it’s going to be huge for for the Sharks and um what they’re trying to kind of put together here um so yeah that that relationship based thing really stuck out to me and yes I know every coach is GNA try to have a relationship but he gets more into it here in in this clip right here um you know I think everyone’s taught differently and it’s my job to understand that and to figure out these players not just as play players but as human beings first um I’ll get to know him as a human being then I’ll get get going on them as a player um but understanding what they take what each player goes through off the ice on the ice there’s different things that happens in players lives there’s social media that’s in in play now um there’s pressures from the outside world agents family um so we have to have an understanding of that as a coaching staff um but at first and foremost I got to understand what these are they are as human beings how they’re taught you know are they a visual learner can they look through video is need to be on I instruction um so that’s going to be the this my job um with the younger generation that’s coming and I really do feel like I I I you know I’m not that far away from removed from them so I understand where they’re coming from that teaching element from him is how do I connect to these guys and make sure put them in the best and it’s not doesn’t seem like it’s GNA be just one way right if if you know one guy if he’s really good at just maybe processing through tape um cool okay I’m going to you know kind of fit things around that to try to get to try to get to him right one guy is a I need to just kind of be on the ice and do a type of guy cool seems like he’s gonna whatever A A young player needs I think that’s going to be huge and warski is gonna be be that guy who can really I think help these kids get get the most out of them as quickly as possible um and that that’s what his job is right is is the we have the future of the Sharks basically in our hands with mlin celebrini Will Smith William eckan and then soon to be guys like Quinton musy whoever they pick at 14 you know Shakir madula like the the the Sharks core is basically their new core is is basically here and rovski is going to be the guy who’s putting the systems into place trying to teach these guys kind of what it is to be NHL players and putting them in a position to succeed by connecting to the them and making their this transition as easy as possible and it is a difficult transition uh for players you know I mean no very not everybody is like Conor Bard or whatever and they they just kind of Hit the ice and run go run with it right we think celebrini is gonna have success but you know there is going to be issues and these guys are going to have ups and downs you know celines the will Smiths the William ecklin whoever right I think though for wasowski is going to put in an uh infrastructure and ecosystem for these guys to be able to grow and get the most out of them so we’ll talk about more on kind of what to expect from the shark system uh and we’ll hear some from Mike Greer and kind of his his thoughts on on uh who they’re drafting which I really love them not being koi about it uh and his thoughts on the captains so we’ll get to that here uh in just one minute take all season right now with the uh NBA finals which could still be going on you have the NHL finals which going to game five uh or if you just want to go check out summertime uh baseball right now new customers get 200 bucks in bonus Bets with any winning $ five bet um so if you think vas got is in game five if you like the Giants to maybe turn things around here soon or uh whatever it is just as my friend Seth says just keep betting against the Rockies and the white socks you’ll probably have a good time so uh you get a you win five bucks uh and you get $200 that you can bet on everything from the finals MVP to who’s going to hit one out of the park so visit fanduel.com lockon and add a big win to your summer bucket list FanDuel America’s number one sports book and so with rovski he was asked a lot about kind of like well what are you going to do differently like what do you want this team to kind of look like what’s your vision going to look like right that that’s a valid question especially with what the Sharks went through the past couple Seasons right um and we got kind of the of course the initial like we’re going to play Fast etc etc which we you can hear right now has got up and said we want to play slow and we want to be passive um so we want to be fast we want to get on teams uh there’ll be a very distinct look of what our team looks like I can tell you that right now I I think fans will leave our building and say wow that was a fun team to watch win or lose uh the opponent will say man that was a tough team to play against um so I I think there’ll be some changes structurally for sure um but I think what we’ll we’ll be proud of the team that we put on the ice it will be clean they’ll be structure um and it’ll be in they effort-based that will be distinct throughout the whole building so right every we want to play fast we want to play hard etc etc which is very much if you go back to way when Mike Greer was hired right we want to be a hard team to play against we want to be in your face uh we want to be fast and we’ve seen the way the sharks have drafted and the players that they’ve picked right um You Know M celbrity who they’re going to pick and uh like he motor non-stop motor right super smart player um I did a whole if you missed it yesterday did a whole Deep dive on celebrini you know and that is kind of underlying thing with with celebrini is it’s not just the upper skills right it’s that kind of everything Al does um whatever you need him to be celebrini can be that guy um and yes having celebr on this team is going to make life very lot easier for Ryan rovski compared to David Quinn um who of course we know what this was the past two seasons it was a complete tear down um the Sharks realized they had to tear this thing down to the studs and to build this thing back up correctly um but you know even Will Smith has a little bit of an edge to him right William eckan a little bit of an edge to him you know how many times did you see eckan you know kind of get in somebody’s face and laugh as he skates away I know he said he’s not the best chirper so he just kind of smiles and laughs and skates away but like there’s you know there’s a Quinton musty go watch him in the OHL Casper hton go watch him in the OHL luuka Canon 5 foot n there’s an edge to these guys and that is yeah part of hockey but these are the types of players that the sharks are looking to add um and right or wrong we don’t know how this all is going to come together but sharks have an identity of what they want um skilled players but guys who can who can definitely play with an edge and um they they think that’s what you need from playoff time right and um we we see that you know look at the Florida Panthers highly skilled team but they are not afraid to kind of get in your face when and that starts with Matthew kachuck um the kachuck family we know we know the kachuk family loves to uh kind of play with that edge we’ve seen it with Brady kchu we’ve seen it with you know with with Dad kchu like that is that that kind of we’re gonna be we’re gonna be better than you and we’re also gon to make you feel bad about it and I think that’s what the Sharks uh are looking to build that identity right there so um but uh wowski definitely pressed on like well what are you gonna do differently what are you gonna change differently very koi uh you got a A little bit of a you got a bill bellich reference where he’s doesn’t want to say much about it which makes me think um lines if you’re hoping we would get to maybe back to the Bob bner days of like oh here’s what the lines are gonna be uh I don’t think that’s G to happen I think uh waros is gonna be very much more tight lipped uh kind of like what we saw from Quinn of about what his lines are going to look like um but when it comes to the system he was kind of pressed on a little bit and this is what he kind of gave us so England I’m a big b check guy there’ll be some changes you know obviously look at like our the numbers weren’t great the analytics weren’t great um we have to make changes there has to be um a system in place that our players know what’s going on they understand the system we’re not teaching the system in in game 62 and 65 uh there’s some predictability with it um we know when we have the puck we know what we want to do with it when we don’t have the puck we know what we want to do to get it back so that’s um kind of my vision and the structure part will develop you know through the summer and get ready for training camp so two things I got out of that right we the the one that stuck out to me the most was we don’t want to be teaching our system in game 62 and 65 we want some predictability to it which makes a ton of sense uh because again you’re going to have probably a lot of of moving pieces again this year uh with guys you know maybe jumping up from the a to back down um you know a lot of young guys and just kind of playing through an NHL season um you’re already thinking too much just playing and then trying to think too much about what am I supposed to do here what am I supposed to do in this situation I think the like simplified trying almost making it like part of your uh like your instincts of okay this is what I’m supposed to do uh and you know XYZ and um trying to make it easy for younger guys to come in here and kind of step in and play well right away um I think that that was one of the the big takeaways and I don’t I don’t think it was a knock on Quinn um but him saying that like we need to make this thing easier for our players um and especially guys who are maybe coming up at the end of the season or coming in like kind of stepping in in the middle of a season um we’re not having to teach them they kind of know what there is expected of them and they’re they can kind of step in and play right away um I also love the The Mention Of analytics yes NHL the sharks have analytics program the analytics that they have are way different than what we get as as public uh analytics and they’re going to be focused on different things but um just not shine away from that and and especially being a younger coach I assume he’s going to be a little bit more analytically driven so I’m interested to see like is he more aggressive pulling the goalies how does he you know at the end of a game is he a uh pull the goalie to have a six on four type of situation especially if you’re on a potential power play like I’m curious to see how he uses analytics to his Advantage um are we going to see a more aggressive penalty kill uh which was kind of a Hallmark of of his time with Chicago and having a very aggressive penalty kill in the AHL um do you have the horses do do that right now so um kind of how warski develops in his system and what he does to try to kind of change the the the direction of this franchise especially after the last two years where it’s been uh very miserable experience to watch the Sharks play hockey and um he’s seems like he seems like a really sharp dude who knows what he wants and can communicate and teach right and that is a big thing about coaching is um not just asking players to do but teaching them what to do and I think wari is a a uh smart guy who’s going to be able to teach these guys and teach them in the easiest way that uh he can or make it easy for for some of these guys to learn and jerks have a lot of high hockey IQ guys coming in here I think it’s going to uh you know they they’ll be able to to pick up things quickly um so I think for warski it’s going to be you know don’t throw too much on their play but continue to kind of push and and grow them and that’s going to be the big balance for warski but again I think though that like that sentence of not teaching guys in game 62 and 65 I think that’s going to stick for me for a while um as we can kind of continue to to move into the warsofsky era so uh well we got some quotes from Mike Greer including uh some stuff on mlin celebrini who he is 1,000% not shy away from um and then of course he he made it a point to talk about Logan cotor uh so we’ll get to that here in just one second if getting life very kind of close to the vest with things right he’ll give you a little crumbs here and there uh does have a little bit of a sassiness to them sometimes which I really appreciate as someone who can be super sarcastic and very sassy myself uh to people uh does have a little bit of that and you you could kind of see it on display today and one of the things I I I really enjoyed today from uh from my career was one every like all the reporters and stuff on all the media when asking questions they would allude to ma CBR but they wouldn’t say his name which I get right uh we’re we’re still kind of playing this this game with oh potential number one pick um etc etc uh here’s what Mike Greer had to actually say when had asked about the number one pick Macklin and his family and if it is mlin did I say mlin um um we’ll meet with we’ll meet with them and uh see mlin um well meet with his agents and his family and and um just to try and decide what’s best for him in his development and and he’s different than those other guys that he’ll go back to school you know Byfield and some of those other guys go back to Junior or or situations like that but um you know I think we’ll work together and just try and figure out what the best plan of is for him and and go from there ma celebrating is playing the NHL next year that that’s my take away from that um he’s going to of course put the decision he’s basically going to say do you want to come play on the Sharks next year or do you want to go back to college and celebra he’s probably going to say I want to go play on the Sharks and even I know there’s been some well you know maybe I might go back to college etc etc even Conor Bard at this time last year was also like well maybe you know if I go back to the WHL and stuff like that’s just part of the game that they’re playing right now um with it so uh but yes I I just really enjoy that uh uh he’s just like guys we’re picking like we can stop playing around with this everybody knows we’re picking Ma on CBR celebrini knows he’s picking him you know we I’ve already had conversations with his family his dad literally lives like right down the road um works right down the road like celebrini is he’s going to be a santose shark here in 10 days uh by the time you guys hear this right um 10 or 11 days what are we at so anyway um like he is he’s going to be a San J shark we can stop playing this game um he’s going to be on the Sharks next year unless he really comes out and says you know what I want to go back and win a championship but they talked about his development what’s best for his development M celebrini walking in right now I talked about it yesterday um go listen if you haven’t checked it out go listen to my ma and celebrini deep dive he’s gonna be probably the third best forward on the Sharks just walking onto the team right um muel granin William ecklin just because he’s already played a full season um Fabian zerin like Mackin celebrini he’s the third or fourth best shark on the team right now um it’s and by the end of the season he’s going to be the best forward on the shark on the Sharks and so he also assuming we’ll see what happens with Logan Couture but speaking of Lor uh Greer made a point like we’re all done kind of done they about ready kind of do the the Jersey you know photo op everything like that here’s what gur said about Captain Logan Couture you guys have been great great here um since I’ve gotten here and supporting myself and uh the hockey team and um just one more thing I wanted to put to bed for you media guys is stuff’s out there that I’m looking to trade Logan Couture or anything like that that is absolutely false um if you look at us bringing in young players here and having a young team he’s exactly the type of person you want to have around your young players he’s our captain he’s our leader he had a tough year um but we we love him as a person most importantly and he’s still a heck of a hockey player so um any of those you guys can put any of those thoughts about me looking to trade our captain put those to bed so yeah lcus hor is probably not get one nobody sharing for right now because he hasn’t played hockey he’s played six games in the past uh calendar year uh and two $8 million cap hit for the next three seasons but like having cotor around if even if he’s playing or not playing whatever I think having cotor around the locker room and helping some of these young guys who again loor who’s been through basically everything except for win a Stanley Cup right um cador’s fought through injuries Kor has played you know amazing hockey in the playoffs and arguably been one of if not the best player on a playoff team uh making a run go look back at coutur that the the 15 six actually both deep both deep playoff runs though the year they went to the cup 156 um and then go in the 1819 season go look at Couture’s numbers those year like Kor is just playing out of his freaking mind um but one like there’s not trading didn’t say anything about Mario Ferraro but alone gor though is going to be here and I I expect Couture to kind of ride out the rest of his contract with the sharks uh just because I don’t think they’re going to get enough value back to trade for him and at some point you need to have like adults around um and I think cotor who um the Sharks played really well with cotor in the lineup last year I know the tiniest of sample sizes um in his six game but you saw a different energy and a spark with cotor in the lineup and I think if cotor is healthy you’re going to to see that um and I think it helps to slot a lot of guys in um if coutur is kind of your 3C with granin celebrini Couture like that’s a not the worst uh depth down the middle the Nik St is your 4C like that’s that’s not the worst and um you know even going into last year right we we never got the hurdle Couture grandland Stern lineup hopefully you get a little bit better in ing injury luck this season and you get to see Couture you know play of at least 70 out of 82 games or get to play a bit more this year than six games and I think that’s gonna have a huge impact um on the Sharks and on these young guys of just a guy like Lor who’s played you know 15 seasons in the NHL and has done everything except for lift the cup um I think just having him around is going to be huge for for some of these young guys to learn from um and just kind of get that experience so um overall though I think though warski came off really bright very emotional uh which I I really liked um as well just kind of how like I said how much it meant to him uh I think he’s going to have a plan in place and I think uh with some added Talent uh that that’s coming and celebr and Smith and if they you know plenty of cap space to try to add some some crafty veterans uh to this lineup you know I I’m not saying the sharks are gonna be a playoff team or you know even got sniff the playoffs but I think they’re going to be more exciting uh and more fun to watch night in night out and I think um as someone who had to watch 82 games of this team last year right now that’s all you can ask for is just seeing this this thing move in the right direction right rowski I mentioned it before he has the of kind of lifting the Titanic off off the ground right now um but I think he’s getting some some great pieces I think he’s got a plan um we’ll see what type of coaching staff he kind of puts together here on his system but um I think the Sharks I think we might be looking back and be like wow the Sharks knocked this one out of the park um especially if celebrini and Smith and you know Muk Mullan and these young guys are turn out to be half as good as we think they’re going to be so um that’s going to be it for me today today be back tomorrow with another uh set of draft profiles uh so one guy who sharks fans are kind of penciling in that’s kind of all I’m going to say right there uh so make sure you guys are following along for that uh you can follow along wherever you get Podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon sharks follow me on Twitter at my fry hole till tomorrow bye friends [Music]

  1. Out of everything you said, I agree

Especially on the Couture side. Yeah, 6 games is a small sample size, but the fact that the first game Cooch is back, Vlasic started Outskating people, and got his first goal of the year and got 5 points the fastest he’s ever gotten in his career as a Defensive DMan.

Cooch being back lit a fire under the team. He gave the boys that drive to push and fight.

If Couture can come back healthy and ready to play even 40 games, it’s going to make an absolutely HUGE difference for the team.

  2. I enjoyed GMMG's sassiness with Sheng.

Sheng: Reports were that it was down to Ryan and Marco Sturm so do you have any comment on Marco?
GMMG: Was that your report that it came down to those two?
    Sheng: (laughing) Actually yes.
GMMG: So that's not accurate. Marco did interview. He did a good job. I spoke to him afterwards and let him know that Ryan was just a better fit. We had a good conversation about maybe some of the things in my view he can improve for his next job. He's a good coach and a good person and very passionate about the Sharks.

  3. Warsofsky was my pick from the day they fired Quinn and this press conference just reaffirms my thoughts. Very excited for the future of this team, even if it is still years away.
