[Music] it’s a two Bell Tuesday Lots going on we’re going to talk about how you make a decision as to how you going to build your NFL roster in terms of the quarterback position I think there’s a right way to do it I think there are several ways where it can be done but you got to be really really lucky I think that the key to building at the quarterback position which is absolutely necessary if you’re going to win a championship or if you’re going to go to the playoffs you’ve got to have a really good quarterback I think the way is to cover as much of the table as you can in terms of craps roulette the more chips you have on the more numbers the more likely you are to win the bet I think that’s how you get a quarterback I think that the Colts have have put all their chips on one number and it’s a really good number Anthony Richardson number five put them all on number five baby let’s go roll the dice that’s what Chris B done is that the right way to do it we’ll talk about a number of different ways to do it then we’ll talk about the right way to do it we’ll talk about Lily King Lily King a third straight win in an olympic trial she did it last night in the 100 meter breaststroke she’s got another event coming the 200 meter breast stroke qualifications and then finals downtown Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium we’ll talk about Celtics a little bit Celtics win it in five one of the least dramatic NBA Finals in the history of the event I mean this is it wasn’t starless he had donic he had Irving I I just don’t see Tatum as a star or brown as a star that’s a good team that’s a a team with really good components the Celtics were during a season where a lot of guys were hurt and their road to the playoffs was really augmented by those those injuries whether it was like Donovan Mitchell or Jimmy Butler or Ty re Halbert and whomever the Celtics they they really didn’t have a tough road out of the East and because of that they really had kind of an easy employed in filling that position different franchises do it different ways you look at the Packers how the Packers done it they went out and traded for Brett Favre way back in the day they employed Brett far for a really long time as their starting quarterback in the middle of that run or toward the with about three years left they draft Aaron Rodgers late in the first round they groom Aaron Rodgers when Favre is allowed to leave Rogers he signs or he he is employed then as the starter and they don’t miss a beat now they’ve done it again Rogers off love in we’ll see if it works this time three straight runs at that that’s pretty extraordinary if love winds up being the right guy in the long long term the Colts tried to do that they had pton Manning they drafted him number one overall in 1998 then because Manning’s neck has surgery injuries pile up over the years the neck injury had to be addressed surgically he missed the 2011 season because of that the Colts had the number one pick in 2012 they decided to do kind of what the Packers did and you know what pton n he can go over here we’ll draft Andrew Lock that all looked well and good until Andrew Luck got hurt and then retired because he didn’t want any part of uh a life that included a whole bunch of rehab while he was in his 30s he wanted to be a present father husband son all of that friend and so he decided that football wasn’t going to be a compliment uh profession toward that end and he moved on that threw the Colts into complete disarray that timing disruption caused the Colts to employ a bunch of different types of strategies in terms of finding a quarterback they signed a veteran with a year left they used a backup they used they went out and got another guy who had kind of been deflowered in his run in Philadelphia they tried everything and now they’ve gone after a superior athlete in Anthony Richardson who if he’s the right guy if he can stay healthy and he can continue to develop at his craft the Colts might look really smart for taking him with the fourth overall pick in 2023 if not it’s back to the drawing board you see many different teams do it many different ways you see the uh build around a mediocre veteran we’ve seen this with Jared gof Matthew Stafford although Matthew Stafford’s not mediocre but you know what I mean Ryan tanah Hill another of those Alex Smith another of those uh they’re trying in Atlanta with cousins you know you you’ve got guys who haven’t been able to get over the hump yet New Orleans with with Carr good quarter mediocre to good quarterbacks let’s say that veterans that are as good as they’re going to get are they good enough to get you over to Home Stafford was with the Rams they built around him sufficiently when you got a guy like Aaron Donald you can go you can win football games right if you’ve got a competent offensive line you got a few weapons you got guys who can get over after the quarterback on the other side of the field and somebody who can cover you you got chance to go deep into the playoffs the Rams did that the Lions they’re trying to do the same thing as the beneficiaries of that same trade that sent Stafford from the Lions to the Rams they got shared golf back they’re trying to get that done overpaying for mediocre to good is not much of a strategy though it doesn’t often work you’ve got other teams who just keep throwing uh the Bears among them keep throwing draft Equity at quarterback after quarterback after quarterback after quarterback so you have trabis they trade up from three to two for trabis then they take Fields right then fields are here didn’t good enough so we’re going to take Caleb Williams and they’re hoping that Caleb Williams winds up being the right guy I think the right way to do this I is to continue the 49ers did a great job of this they just kept trying right and finally they landed on a guy who’s kind of a system quarterback excellent for the system not necessarily physically excellent and that’s why he was Mr Irrelevant that’s Brock pie but you keep investing quarter draft Equity whether it’s in the first round second round third round seventh round you keep drafting quarterbacks after quarterbacks after quarterbacks and at some point you’re going to hit the number and that to me is what you need to do I think you need to draw you need to draft a quarterback every year and see if that quarterback winds up being the guy to get you over the hump I the Colts they’re you know what and you can do it it it’s like going to the casino man you stand at the roulette table and you put all your money on five if you come if it comes up five you look like a freaking genius for putting all your money on five you walk out with your pockets filled and that’s the point of being an an NFL general manager all these guys are smart they’re all smart Trent balky is smart hell Chris Ballard is smart he’s trying to do it his way you got to get Get Lucky with health you got to get lucky with a guy who’s diligent who whose diligence in college which was apparent or you wouldn’t have drafted the guy is not corrupted by the millions of dollars that he gets in salary what’s guy’s got $50 million and some of them making $50 million a year how about Trevor Lawrence 50 million million dollar a year Tua what what is going on in the minds of those in Miami or those in maybe it’s just Florida GMS but all these guys are smart what are you going to do if you’ve got a tua what are you going to do if you’ve got a Trevor Lawrence are you going to say goodbye to that guy or are you going to sign that guy to an extension that really from a cap perspective kind of paints you into a corner a little bit reduces your resources that could be invested in others I would draft a quarterback every single year I would draft uh Spencer rler I would have drafted him this year Sam Ellinger fine guy to draft but when he got pressed into service you understood what you had there’s no point in keeping him around as an employee you know for a fact that you can’t go to the postseason with Sam Ellinger as your starting quarterback so goodbye you make the move to say goodbye good guy in the locker room kiss my ass we’re all done with that we are going to do what’s necessary to win and Ellinger I don’t think is a part of that formula so you move on and you draft a new version of that I agree with the drafting of Ellinger the maintaining of Ellinger you know what I mean go get a new one go get Spencer Rattler use a fourth rounder third rounder to go get a guy like that and continue well okay does he does he project toward winning football games as a start n all right so we’re going to get another one we’re going to bet short stacks of chips on a bunch of numbers instead of a tall stack on one which is what Balor does has done and if that winds up working good for him if it doesn’t probably going to cost him his job eventually um but there there are a lot of strategies and and we’ve seen them all really I mean we you know since 18 when was the quarterback he retires you’ve got brette then you’ve got Rivers then you’ve got Wentz then you’ve got Ryan now you’ve got Richardson you had menu last year pressed into service because of injury you’ve seen it all as we’ve watch the Colts I think you just need more chips uh theand Creek says if AR busts do you fire dummy Ballard I think that’s going to take a couple years to figure out but if he busts I I think the whole thing kind of falls apart you’re going to lose Ryan Kelly eventually you’re going to lose Quenton Nelson eventually DeForest Buckner is going to age uh Grover Stewart’s going to age you’re going to have guys that Ballard has brought in who are going to age out of that roster and they’ve got to be replaced this team is built to win right now with Anthony Richardson if they don’t win right now I think he gets another year I think at the end of next year if they haven’t won in either 24 or 25 I think the booms on off the roads a little bit but you know Dan doit called it a 10-year plan hey we’re closing in aren’t we this is year eight hey NBA Finals like Chris Ballard’s a smart guy though you just got to get lucky and whoever the GM is you got to have a reason to Hope right that’s the thing hope sells tickets and right now there’s hope for the Indianapolis Colts another year of this I think there’s still going to be hope hope two years H not so much I don’t think we’re going to be in that jackpot though I Colts I I think right now as it stands and this could change tomorrow because you know injuries happen guy pulls a muscle lifting weights or something you got injuries I think the Colts win the AFC South tell you the truth NBA Finals Celtics win last night 10688 non-dramatic series of all non-dramatic series uh you knew this was going to be itics and five I called it before the series started Tatum last night 31- 11 holiday 15 and 11 Brown 218 and6 no stars on that team Brad Stevens got it right it’s the combination of traits that have elevated the Celtics to their 18th franchise NBA title next year it’s going to be a little bit different uh Cubs last night losers in the ninth Cubs going to the top of the ninth up six to four catchers interference put the tying run on and then all of a sudden Estrada hits a
