New Orleans Saints & Alvin Kamara Could End Dispute With A 2-Year Contract Extension

New Orleans Saints & Alvin Kamara Could End Dispute With A 2-Year Contract Extension

turns out we were right Alvin cima’s asking price isn’t really just about price at all we got all that and a little bit of Lanette for you on today’s episode of Locked on Saints you are locked on Saints your daily New Orleans Saints podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day what is good hudat nation and hudat family I am your host your friend Ross Jackson New Orleans native your New Orleans Saints expert and credential member of the media covering those New Orleans Saints as a senior writer and reporter over at Saints news network and on today’s episode of Locked on Saints of New Orleans Saint sign free agent tight end jper holstead but it feels like that position room still needs a lot more help well I’m also going to tell you why Carl Granderson is going to lead the New Orleans Saints in Sachs in 2024 well o take a look at two other players that helped themselves out during OTAs and mini camp and to kick us off Alvin cima’s asking price isn’t really about a price tag at all just like we expected we appreciate you very much as always for making locked on Saint your first listen of the day every day and for being it every day or here on the show which is a proud part of locked on podcast Network your team every day and today’s episode is brought to you by friends at FanDuel make every moment more right now new customers with will get $200 by winning any $5 bet that’s $200 in bonus bets by winning any $5 bet just head over to fanduel.com lockon to get started Well turns out we were right here on the show uh that Alvin cra’s contract dispute with the New Orleans Saints isn’t really about the money that he’s making it’s about the money that he’s guaranteed we got some more details on what it is that New Orleans Saints running back Alvin CRA may be asking for and so I want to break that down um in case you missed it uh New Orleans State’s running back Alvin chimra participated in walkthroughs in the final day of mini camp and then left practice after that or let me let me let me phrase that more appropriately didn’t practice after that we ran into him in the parking lot he was still out there like we talked to him he went back into the facility it’s not a situation where he like threw his helmet down cursed everybody out and walked off the F you know some people will have you believe that that is not what this is the reason why this happened is because the New Orleans Saints and Alvin CRA have reportedly been in contract negotiation or contract discussions for the past couple of months again I highlight that this also means that New Orleans Saints running back Alvin chimra not only didn’t participate in the last day of mandatory mini camps but did participate even though they weren’t making progress in contract negotiation conversations for two of three days in mini camp so I guess choose whichever one is more important to you for the narrative it turns out though that the conversation just like we expected here on the show isn’t about how much money Alvin CRA is or is not making this year he’s got a $10.2 million base salary this year only 1 million of which is guaranteed by the way so now you have to look ahead to 2025 where he has an over $22 million base salary and is due nearly $25 million or right around $25 million in 2025 however 0 of that salary is guaranteed now there are some money or there is some money there are some monies if you will that are a part of what he is what’s going to be accounted for for 2025 signing bonuses restructure bonuses all those other things but remember that is already been paid out to Alvin CRA those numbers are just the Saints paying things off over the course of time as opposed to right away so the reason why I mentioned that we were right here on the show is because J um over at ESPN uh Jeremy Fowler did a little bit of a report an update if you will on Alvin in the contract negotiations and he said quote I’m told that CRA is open to doing a reworked 2-year deal strengthening guarantees in year 1 2025 that’s it that’s all he’s looking for he’s looking for some guarantees in 2025 we got to remember we got to remember that how much you’re paid per year in your total contract value doesn’t mean much unless that money is entirely guaranteed hello Kurt Cousins pass contracts right not the Falcons contract but his pass contracts with the uh inota Vikings but if you’re not into that situation or if you’re not in that situation where a bunch of that money is guaranteed then what your apy is or your average per year payments are don’t really mean anything you can sign a 4-year $200 million contract which means $50 million per year but if you’re only getting $60 million guaranteed then you might only really have a 2-year $60 million contract in that case depending upon how BAS salaries are built out what your signing bonus was all of these other numbers that are really important and so even though you could look at Alvin cra’s contract and say whoa he’s set to make 22 plus million do of just base salary alone next season how dare he ask for more money that’s not the point the point is that Z doar of that money is guaranteed and the point is that Alvin chra is a running back that is going to have a big role for this team that’s going to take a lot of hits for this team that’s going to be heavily involved for this team in 2025 and so the idea of going into 2024 without any vision of commitment or really even any veil of commitment for his future with this team is a tall task it’s a high order it’s a tough thing to ask one of the toughest positions in the NFL to extend your career that’s really really challenging and I get it the New Orleans Saints have young guys behind them they’ve got kendre Miller but they don’t know what they have in kendre Miller yet they know the potential they know that there’s a ceiling there but do they know that they have that for sure the answer is simply no and outside of that you have other guys that are talented but majority unproven in your building James Robinson proven with the Jacksonville Jaguars is looking to prove himself again with the New Orleans Saints Jordan Mims going into just his second year in the league hardly any experience on the field in terms of regular season but man is he a great fit for this New Orleans Saints system that Clint kubak is bringing in Jacob kabot who’s coming in as an undrafted free agent this off season same conversation but again those are projections Alvin chimra has production visible production repeatable production and I know he’s missed some games and he’s had injuries and things like that most players are not going to play play 17 games in nowaday in in today’s NFL it’s just not going to happen that’s fine you got to get over that if you’re a team you know what I mean like you got to be ready for that if that’s the case that’s why you’ve got Jamal Williams that’s why you’ve got kendre Miller not to immediately turn things over to those guys but so that they can compliment and come in in place of Alvin chimra whichever is more important for that given game and I also just want to remind people too that this thing that we’re talking about this like 2-year extension that includes some guarantees in the first year of that extension which would be 2025 in this case is not a far cry away from what the New Orleans Saints have already done with two guys this off season they did that with Demario Davis and they did that with Tyron Matthew both of which older than Alvin CRA but to be fair around this situation Alvin CRA does play running back and teams are going to be very cautious about handing out third contracts to running backs period regardless of how old a player is they’re going to be cautious about handing third contracts to running backs that’s why the last one in the most recent you know examples to really get that done was Christian McCaffrey one of the best running backs in the game and so now Alvin CRA is looking to be the next one to get that but he’s not asking for a mile he’s asking for a commitment that’s what he’s asking for from his team I think that they should be able to find a happy medium and get this done coming up next Carl Granderson’s going to lead the team in Sachs in 2024 plain and simple we’re going to discuss him as well as two other players that really help themselves in otaa in mini camp here this offseason we got that coming up for you as we continue on with today’s episode of lockon saints part lockon podcast Network right family New Orleans Saints defensive end Carl Granderson is set to lead the team for the second year in a row in Sachs we appreciate you very much as always making us your first listen of the day every day here on the show don’t forget to go and check out our friends over at locked on sports today the 247 stream which you can find on locked on sports today YouTube page is everything that you CRA before they knew what was going on with Alvin CRA all these kinds of things you can go check it out over at locked on sports today you can find it on the lockon sports today YouTube channel as well as on the free Amazon Fire TV channels at part lockon podcast Network your team every day so Carl Granderson is in my opinion already set to lead the Saints in Sachs for a second year in a row he did it in 2023 with eight and a half sacks but look there’s three reasons why I think that Carl Granderson gets that Accolade again here in 2024 the first of which is that he will probably out snap every other defensive end on the roster uh Cam Jordan we’ve seen the percentage of snaps tick down year in and year out over the course of the past few years I think that Trend continues not because of anything going on with Cam Jordan but just because like you simply have so many different pieces at the edge so even if you didn’t factor in cam Jordan’s age or whatever you’re still looking at the fact that Carl Granderson is lining up opposite him and Chase Young’s got to get his snap somewhere and Payton Turner and Isaiah fosy and these other guys very likely to also get opportunities based upon game situation all this other stuff so all of that could chip into Cam Jordan’s snaps but your best pass rusher right now based on what you’ve seen over the course of the past couple of years is clearly Carl Granderson and so you’re probably not going to take him off the field as much so one I think he just simply out snaps the rest of the defensive end group two I think he’s a unique blend of speed and Power in a way that the Saints thought that they were going to hit with first round Investments that they just happened to hit on an undrafted free agent coming out of Wyoming I think that’s the other piece of it too um his ability to get to the quarterback quickly is well documented you can look at nextg Stats all these other things he tends to get to the quarterback a lot faster than the other guys who are more second third effort type pass rushers now that’s going to change with Chase young and I think the two will complement each other well as speed rushers off the edge but I also think that Carl grer imposing size as well as uh physical demeanor are things that are credits to his game as well he’s just a little bit more versatile as a pass rusher than really since Cam Jordan because Cam Jordan won both ways for a long time then kind of started to win specifically with power and like you know all those times where he would bulldoze offensive lineman into quarterbacks and stuff like that I think we’re getting to that evolution of Carl Granderson here very soon and he’s going to be able to marry that speed and power not just speed and power conversion like what you saw with Marcus Davenport which wasn’t as effective as I think the New Orleans Saints were hoping or the Minnesota Vikings were hoping or the Detroit Lions are about to Hope um and look that’s just the way that that all panned out but I I think the Saints found it in Carl Granderson as opposed to the guy that they invested a first- round pick in in Marcus Daven for um the third thing for me is that he fits the mold of what it of of the type of edge rusher that’s winning in the NFL right now the guys that have size the guys that have athleticism the guys that have Bend and the guys who have power he just fits that mold so this is kind of an evolution of the second point but I think if you look around the NFL and you look at some of the guys that are you know the Bosa Brothers right you look at um you know TJ watt’s kind of been his own category as like a smaller Edge rusher but you look at some of these other guys around the NFL that have been Terr off the edge and a good part of the reason why they’re working Aiden Hutchinson is another example is because of the ability to be able to blend not just speed and power but quickness agility Bend all of these other things I just think that Carl greerson checks that box as well then you add the demeanor right the mentality of I got to get to the quarterback and I want to finish when I get there I think that that’s a big thing too so I look at all three of those things as reasons that Carl Granderson will lead the team in Sachs again for a second year in a row here in 2024 and really for me it was watching him during OTAs watching them during mini camps seeing all of those things on full display constantly um the that’s the reason why I think he has sort of really kind of settled in and risen as the top guy now to be fair we didn’t get to see Cam Jordan during mini camps when it came to team drills and things like that so maybe we start seeing Cam Jordan back in his bag by the time that he gets to training camp by the time that he gets to the beginning of the season and all that but I I think the torch begins to pass to the young guy in Carl Granderson to kind of lead the charge um if you will uh another guy because I wanted to go over two other defensive players that really helped themselves during OTAs another guy that really helped himself during OTAs big time was undrafted free agent safety at a TCU Millard Bradford uh if you’re an everyday here you’ve heard me talk about this if you’re an Insider we’ve probably discussed this quite a bit um Miller Bradford was probably one of the most impressive players throughout OTAs and mini camp just consistently around the ball consistently making plays on the ball uh walking away with three or four interceptions during his time in terms of combining OTAs rookie mini camp and mandatory mini camp right if you put all those together he was just a guy that showed you exactly what it was that made him such a commodity for TCU it was his ability to be a playmaker right maybe to be a ball Hawk now it’s tough to call a guy who had four interceptions during his Collegiate Seasons at TCU a ball Hawk I get that okay a lot of people have pushed back on that or not a lot of people push back on that but a lot of people have asked questions about that I get that uh but I do think that like playmaker is a little bit more of a better kind of moniker that or archetype that he fits 19 passes defense during his time remember we’re talking passes defense pass breakups all those kind of stuff so him just making plays at the ball uh very much a part of his identity and what he did at TCU and so far we saw that very very quickly and very consistently to give him credit uh throughout rookie mini camps OTAs and mini camp now it’s easy to talk about the interceptions it’s harder to you know diagnose the busted coverages or whatever it might be in terms of maybe he was supposed to be somewhere when he wasn’t but I didn’t see any moments where he specifically looked out of place or confused or anything like that I would say that he was putting together a consistently solid performance all throughout uh mini camp training camp stuff like that or excuse me OTA stuff like that but once the competition really starts to set in at training camp um and he has sort of this uphill battle Decline and a very populated safety room so really what he’s probably fighting for as like a practice squad spot uh I think that there’s good things that you might see uh come from him when it comes to that spot and then finally I want to give a shout out to linebacker DeMarco Jackson this is a guy that doesn’t get a lot of love but has grinded since the moment that he’s been drafted um played a lot of special teams for the team and has kind of built into this strongside type linebacker who can also play a little bit of mic good communicator highly intelligent guy um I think that he just has kind of been stuck in terms of uh you know roster and how many people are ahead of him and what his role has been and all that but with Zack Bon gone with Nephi Su on injured reserve with the Achilles that happened at the end of the season or with the the the lower leg injury I’ll call it just cuz I don’t want to get it wrong but the lower leg injury that he had at the end of the season um it really does open a door here for DeMarco Jackson he’s had some strong moments during ota’s mini camp and all that not just in special teams but even over on the defensive side as well kind of like how Miller Bradford hasn’t just stood out as a special teams guy which is what you expect from udfas he stood out from making plays from his natural position you’re seeing that from DeMarco Jackson uh as well who even ended a four and out um end of game simulation with quarterback Jake hner who had been on fire all through OTAs and mini camps with a diving stop from the second level that was set to go about four or five yards over his head or or be Beyond him and he did not let that ball get over his head and he ends up knocking it down to the ground and ending the drive so really good stuff from DeMarco Jackson all throughout ota’s training camp or excuse me mini camp and all that I’m excited to see him after he’s kind of raised his stock a little bit going into training game coming up next the new and Saints signed a free agent tight end in jper horad but I don’t think that they should be considering themselves done at the tight end position we got that coming up for you as we continue on and wrap up today’s episode of lockon saints P lockon podcast Network your team every day let’s get it hudat Nation the New Orleans Saints went out and signed themselves as a free agent tight end but I can’t say that they’re done at the position we appreciate you very much as always for being here with us don’t forget we are your team every day coming up tomorrow I’m going to tell you why the new world and Saints absolutely should if nothing else be making some phone calls to the San Francisco 49ers and John Lynch to inquire about wide receiver Brandon auk we’ll discuss uh what a trade could look like why the New Orleans Saints should be interested in it if they don’t have to give up a king’s Ransom to get it done and how they could make the salary cap situation work we break all of that down in tomorrow’s episode it’s going to be nerdy and fun and a little bit pie in the sky but hey it’s that time let’s be pie in this guy New Orleans Saints keep clearing cap space might as well use it for something uh we’ll break all that down in tomorrow’s episode so look the New Orleans Saints went out and sign tight end Jer hor said couple of corresponding moves that went with that really one specific corresponding move that went with that is that they waved uh undrafted free agent wide receiver Kyle sheets who came in from Slippery Rock he was kind of one of those like sleeper guys that a lot of people were really excited excited about we’ll see if that wave lasts uh the Saints also wave defensive back Fon Hicks uh Fon had a couple of really nice moments really made some nice plays couple interceptions things like that uh during his time and OTAs and mini camp combined uh but was dealing with a little bit of a hamstring injury that kept him out for uh a good portion of mini camp and so because of that maybe that’s what led to sort of the split between the two or maybe there’ll be a reunion after that to kind of put some offset injury language or something like that um in the contract so we we’ll see which way that all goes but the signing of tight end j for hor said is an interesting one he’s a 6’3 230 plus 240 pound tight end Saints really are showing that they’re okay with this body style uh of tight ends and the reason why I mentioned that is because we’ve seen taes Hill have a very large role at tight end we’ve seen uh guys like uh D Hulker of course look awesome uh in terms of how he’s been utilized uh over the course of the offseason I did a whole segment on him yesterday about how I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up on the roster for New Orleans like if I’m making a roster today D Hulker is on it um you think back to San Francisco’s tight end room uh George KD 6’4 250 pounds not the biggest guy typically when we’re talking about big tight ends we’re talking about the Jimmy Grahams of the world 6667 the Kobe fleers of the world all that kind of stuff the Saints have typically kind of uh leans to that prototype of tighted um but here over the course of this offseason you’ve seen them really be okay with the I’m going to say quote unquote shorter guy here I sit as a 510 human being therefore 6’3 is not small to me but it is certainly small when it comes to that position or can be considered small when it comes to that position so the thing that’s really interesting about Jesper horad is that he does have some good receiving production in his past but I also wonder how how much of his of what made him so attractive to the New Orleans Saints comes down to the kind of overlap that they have with them Jesper spent uh 200 uh 2019 2020 2021 all with the Chicago Bears 2020 and 2021 were also both seasons where now New Orleans Saints tight end Coach Clancy Barone was also in Chicago and just so that is also said because one of the other kind of visits that we had talked about was the Saints bringing in uh UFL former New Orleans breaker tight end 6’5 250ish pounds uh s canel s canella had also been an overlap with Clancy Barone in Chicago and so it’s interesting that they brought him in for the workout along with a couple of other tight ends I assume that Jer horad was one of those tight ends and then they went the Jer horad route and I will say that horad also overlapped with quarterback Derek Carr in 2022 during his year with the Las Vegas Raiders not a super impressive year three catches for 19 yards he wasn’t on the field very much played um you know very few snaps for the team during that time uh according to pro football reference uh his offensive snap percentage in 2022 was merely 6% his offensive snap percentage in 2019 was merely 27% so I’m not I’m not sure we’re talking about a guy that’s going to make a roster here but it certainly feels like this is a guy that’s going to help out in terms of being on the field and giving the team numbers because the all of mini camp we saw D Hulker we saw Foster Maro and we saw Michael Jacobson those are the only three tight ends and then you factor in Tamm Hill into that number that actually participated in mini camps at the position there was no Tommy Hudson there was no Jawan Johnson those guys were away dealing with injury and things like that so um look the Saints need help there but I and I think that jper horad may make it to training camp and give you the opportunity to have another tight end out on the field while Joan Johnson is still recovering because I assume with Joan Johnson’s uh foot surgery being this week uh the timeline that I’ve heard probably doesn’t put him into coming back until after about a week or so of training camp I assume he’ll miss at least a week of training camp and as we’ve discussed constantly here on the show too that when he does come back it’s going to be a slow acclamation period or ramp up before he really starts to get going so you need the tight end numbers but I don’t think that you’ve solved your problem in terms of finding a long-term solution at the position and as of right now it’s hard to say that the Saints have a true Bonafide long-term solution at this position I think tight end’s going to be a big need for them next season drawn Johnson’s going into a contract year he’s been dealing with injuries and things like that tends to take a little bit of time to get going as we’ve seen over the course of the past couple years but then when he gets going towards the end of the season he’s been magnificent it’s just that it’s seven games left in the season four games left in the season that that starts to get going and so you hope for a speedy recovery for Jaan Johnson and the ability to be able to bridge the gap from the momentum that he picked up over the course the last four games last season 219 of 368 receiving yards last four games three of four touchdowns last four games of the Season can he bridge that Gap deal with his injury and still keep the momentum going into week one of the NFL regular season which the expectation is that he will be ready to start the season that’s going to be a big question for him to answer and so he could potentially end up being the long-term solution at the position if he can show that at the beginning of this year and maintain the consistent performance that I mean you know he wants you know what I mean it’s not like he doesn’t want to have that consistent performance he’s been dealing with injuries and stuff and so it’s it’s tough and so I think that that becomes a big kind of measuring stick when it comes to him but then Bost Maro who looks much bigger this offseason like a lot bulkier a lot more muscle all these other things um you know what is he look like in 2024 like there’s so many question marks at the position but not enough answers at this time you know is D Hulker going to make it when it comes to live full speed football in the NFL we don’t know yet right we have to wait and see that so it’s going to be really tough for the New Orleans Saints to answer the long-term question question the long-term question uh of tight end this off season but they’ll need to answer it either during the season this year which could be with the play of the guys that are already in the building maybe a potential trade deadline type of move whatever it might be or some big surprise move this offseason which would likely be a trade because the the talent isn’t there in the free agent pool at this point um or you have to start looking at next season and we’ll see if that’s the route or which route the New Orleans Saints either end up having to go or choose uh to end up going we’ll see which one uh it is um I I wanted real quick just a little bit of lanap for you I just wanted to shout out Jamal willin for the being the most relatable dude in the world he recently did an appearance on one of the NFL network shows uh with Ian Rapaport and Mike garolo and one of the big things that came from it was as he was talking about this new system that he’s really excited about about Alvin Kon supporting his decision to push for the extension and all these other things his smoke detector battery was low and was was beeping and it was just the most relatable thing most relatable thing from one of the most relatable NFL athletes uh that are out there um absolutely hilarious so shout out to Jamal Williams for not changing his batteries uh in smoke detectors because honestly me neither uh we appreciate you very much as The New Orleans Saints and Alvin Kamara are engaged in a high-profile contract dispute. But the solution may not be new money, just guarantees on money that’s set to be accounted for. Why a two-year contract extension may be all it takes to get a deal done between Kamara and the Saints.

Carl Granderson is set to repeat as the Saints’ sack leader in the 2024 NFL season and why the signing of Jesper Horsted helps the tight end position post Juwan Johnson injury, but doesn’t solve the overall concern.
