Ryan Warsofsky Becomes San Jose Sharks Head Coach (Ep 214)
[Music] n [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] hi welcome back to the fin Factor I’m Aaron and I’m Deo and we are here for episode number two what are we 14 oh my gosh I forgot 214 so many so many episodes episode 14 we are going to be talking about the Sharks hiring their new coach Ryan warski which is warski man I already messed it up already we were just talking about this earlier uh Ryan moravski I’m gonna really have to nail that one down uh they had his press conference today and uh he was introduced as a new coach Mike Greer was there uh Jonathan Becker was there the president and um his family was there and there was a lot of people a lot of family and friends in the crowd Forum which is great to see so the Sharks finally hire their new coach we’re going into the draft next Friday so uh they said that they were going to have a new coach before the draft and here we are yeah give him his own week to shine announcing it on a well I guess they announced it last Thursday did the press conference today yeah so he’ll have a whole week of it everything today um yeah so Ryan Orosi he was the assistant coach last two years for the sharks um he’s very young he’s 36 36 years old the first time a shark’s coach is younger than me which is weird to think about I was wondering is he the youngest shark coach in history that’s a great question I tried to look it up and then I he might be he might be but and you know during the 90s there might have been a coach in there for a hot minute before they hired someone long term as a as a uh interim coach if you will maybe I don’t know um that’s something we should look up though but I’m too busy doing the show so I’m do it have Paul look it up Paul vacation Paul take it demoted to researcher Paul researching from Hawaii Paul is is not here Deo is sitting in for us again this week and uh we appreciate him very much for being here once again and Paul I know already said it in the chat saying thanks for uh filling in um anyway so going back to Ryan he is 36 years old he was the assistant for last years he was in charge of the team defense and the penalty kill which the penalty kill was 18th in the NHL during those 2-year span uh 78.8% for a team that was in the basement for two years in a row uh that was one of I remember two years two years ago specifically that was probably the lone bright spot um last year I feel like the goal tending was a little bit better than it was two years ago uh but the PK was definitely better two years ago than it was last year um but yeah that’s that’s great and um we’ll we’ll see what he could do as the head coach but he was also the coach on in charge of Defense when Carlson had his Resurgence 101 points so it’ll be it’s going to be very interesting to see what he’s going to be doing and implementing here especially systems wise and during the press conference today yes there was a specific question asking him about this right yes and what was his answer um very valich checkan you have to stay look forward you have to stay wait you have to stay stay tuned that’s what it was tuned sorry he said stay tuned a very Bill not giving up anything we’re on to Cincinnati right and he is from Massachusetts so he’s a big bich fan I think he mentioned that as as well um Ryan is from North Marshfield Massachusetts which I have a buddy who lives in Marshfield right now I’m going to go visit him this Summer oh wow um and I I had texted him and asked him and said hey this guy’s around your age did you ever play hockey with him because he played hockey all the time and of course he was like yeah I played with his older brothers and uh when we were growing up and they were great people so if they were not great people he would have told me that they were not so they are very good people which coming from Massachusetts uh is kind of few and far between I’m not say I’ll just say that okay just kidding there’s very people in Massachusetts in all 50 states right in all 50 states oh this is fantastic going off the rails already oh all my friends back East are gonna give me help of that uh before he was with the sharks he spent two seasons with the Chicago Wolves which is in the AHL it’s where the Barracuda play um so he was there from 20 to 22 in his first season they won the cder cup with the Chicago Wolves so I was looking this up I was like who was on that roster of Chicago wolves in 2020 and the top Point Getters they had a very good mix of not just super young they had a lot of older aged um for AHL got a lot of older guys so Stefan n former shark was there and he was the second leading scorer on the team and now he’s playing for Carolina did pretty well in the playoffs um Andrew podari he’s 27 had 101 points that season it’s incredible but some other um name is Jack Drury who is I think Chris drury’s son um he is one of their high-end prospects and he’s playing there um Josh Leo I think was a former NHL guy or at least he’ played in some NHL games that sounds familiar yeah there’s there’s a couple like there’s a couple names in here Richard panck played for a little bit he’s been playing in the NHL for a while so they had a good mix of some people um funny enough E2 Mami who’s in the Sharks organization played 14 games for them uh Peter kok kokov I don’t know how you say his name he now plays for Carolina he’s the starter for Carolina I only know this because he’s on my fantasy team true in our leue familiar Yeah in our league that we play together um and Alex Leon who was playing I believe for Florida he was playing in he’s he’s been like a NHL backup yeah for a while but it was just it was a lot of uh a lot of well-known kind of guys well-known in the sense that they played NH games right they weren’t if you look at if you look at the Barracuda right now there’s not very many guys on that team that have much NHL experience and if they do have any they’re very young and they had just been called up recently so only a few games um I know a lot of people like to bag on the Barracuda and kind of the coaching staff but I don’t think it’s that is the problem I think some of the Personnel um they need a better mix of some veterans in there as well but regardless going back he won the cder cup with that with that group of guys and and it’s kind of amazing to see what he what he’s done in his career so he played in college after college kind of played a little bit um professionally not so much then he got into coaching uh his first coaching gig was uh where was he I think he played I think he went back to his college that he graduated from and was an assistant coach helping there then he was an ECHL coach for the South Carolina sting race now he mentioned today in the in the press conference I don’t know if you caught this he said coaching the ECHL is very difficult because the head coach is in charge of all the logistics of the team I miss that chartering buses chartering hotel rooms chartering doing all of the work of everything of getting an entire team to and from all the games is he watching the jerseys yeah exactly like it is it is a lot of work and he said we did not you don’t get paid very much money so he was thanking his parents I’m sure his parents were definitely helping him out financially at that point right yeah I mean that and that wasn’t even that long ago that was 2016 to 2018 like eight six to eight years ago he was in the ECHL and now he’s a head coach of the NHL making an NHL salary the research is in too oh the research is in yeah I was I almost Kevin Constantine I know he was the youngest he was at 35 when he started so less than a year uh than waro warso is kind of the nickname of him because nobody can say his name so waro yeah especially me especially me waro okay waro um anyway uh thanks for checking that who’s that Craton is that a red dwarf reference let me know if that ised ref that look like Kristen to me jeez checked no is it Krist no there’s no s yeah k r y t I just had my eyes checked spell sometimes right sometimes pronounce words words elude me sometimes yeah we did right and we graduated it’s pretty good school yeah um anyway so uh his pedigree is kind of jumping the ladder pretty quickly here staying for a year or two doing very well and then getting promoted going and then getting promoted and getting promoted and here we are two years later being in assistant coach in the NHL he is now a head coach in the NHL so good on him I’m excited to see it uh he did say he is a players no he didn’t say players coach he said uh uh personal I forgot how he worded it basically he’s a he’s a coach that is uh he’s not going to be a person who’s very not that he’s not strict that’s not the right word either there I I feel like yeah I I know what you’re saying not disciplinarian but a little more lenient but the wording we’re trying yeah term he’s developing the person and is more involved with the dev yeah but also a player’s coach kind of like they like playing for him so all the guys in this past have have liked playing for him um and kryon said yes it’s from Red Dwarf nice job okay good got um just falling back on that um and Paul just chimed in even my son’s team have a parent as a team manager to handle some of that stuff that’s true that’s true and that’s all volunteer work which I’m sure Ryan was mostly volunteer work cuz he wasn’t getting paid much I can’t believe wow I can’t believe that yeah it’s incredible like that’s a lot of work that’s that’s like that’s think like high school and college they at least have somebody yeah like that’s usually what the the um you sharping the skates as well again yeah ridiculous just a one you could have put playing too you’re young enough like it’s just incredible um well I’m glad he graduated and got out of that yeah yeah um Peter St John Aon it’s the beginning of the end you know you’re old when all the players and coaches are older than you it’s weird for me it would took a couple years because I was older than almost all the players that was weird you know a couple years ago I’m like wow there’s I was so happy when Joe Thorton was still playing I’m like he’s still old Mar yeah like there’s still a chance I still have a chance to play right no I don’t but uh now that coaches are younger than me it’s like oh my gosh I’m I’m that I’m that old man I’m I’m the old man both are we all yeah all of us um yeah anyway going back to he’s a proven winner he is yeah I mean and we’re not saying the sharks are going to start winning like playoff games or any even getting to the playoffs right away yeah why I do think we’re canceling the show we we were talking about this um I was in the chat room for those of you who were watching during the live of the sharks live um I was in the chat room as the fin factor and chiming in a little bit um the Sharks will be better than they were this last year I don’t think they will be in the bottom five of The League they’ll be close but I don’t think I don’t think bottom five it also depends on what Greer does in the off season um in terms of like the mix of like what veterans he brings in who he decides to keep yes okay I think right now the goal tending is solid you don’t need to bring in a goal tender because right now there’s vanich who’s going to be healthy and Blackwood who was playing great hockey um it’ll be interesting to see if Ryan brings back uh the goalie coach and I’m blanking on his name now someone could fact check that on me but um they did very well in bounce back with him they did a very good job with him um but I think uh I think it’s spear David spear I don’t know um I think the defense is what needs help and I think they need at least one veteran defenseman NHL defenseman that can play some decent minutes and also a a very good Puck moving to defenseman that isn’t just a puck moving defenseman someone who can play Both Sides right like not quite Carlson’s very different you’re not going be able to get a Carlson but um someone someone who can move the puck and run the power play because Kaylin Addison is okay he’s great on the power play but everything else outside of that no like he’s on a fantasy team yeah I can see it he could be he would be a bottom six guy but he could run the second power play okay kind of thing that’s how I see kayin Addison they need someone who could be on the first Power Play running the power play most of the time who can also play top minutes um for the rest of the game outside of the power play so if they can bring in one of those guys um and I haven’t quite looked at the free agents this year there’s not a whole lot this year there’s more next year that’s that’s bigger names and bigger players but uh Thomas spear is coming back as the goalie coach there we go um couple fact checks there okay someone threw in Warren sto who rip he was the original goalie coach that coached theak off and yeah U but he died oh man probably a decade ago now a little while ago um yeah but uh yeah so I think if they can Shore up that defense and their goal tending is both goal endings are are challenging each other and playing very well I honestly think the offense is not terrible I think it’s it’s obviously getting better with the younger guys coming in you’re going to have celebrini Will Smith the so he’s playing um I’m hoping Quinton musy makes it out of Camp that’s my guy that is my guy and um bad bead bead yeah he might I could see him bouncing between the two I think what they’re going to do with him is keep him at the AHL level longer and give him heavy minutes there in all situations more okay and then he’ll he’ll come up because right now they’re going to have um they still have grandland for a year they still have coacher if he plays I don’t know if he’s going to play um they have uh um Eckland who could play center they’re going to have celebrini they’re gonna have Will Smith who are both centers they’ll probably move one or both to the wing at some point um and then they have uh Nico Sturm still as that fourth line Center yeah so their Center position is pretty solid if they’re healthy they’re pretty solid it’s just the Wingers you fill in the Wingers um so to me I feel like the offense is is solid for a for a young team that’s up and coming okay not a not a solid not winning playoff games but but uh much better than it was last year there’s just more Talent than there was last season higher in talent because of the influx of the younger players yes yeah I mean you still have that zetland grin Eckland line it’s a good line then you’re GNA have celebrini I mean they’re probably going to mix us all up but celebrini um Will Smith and and musty [Laughter] um and Peter St John over here I hear no Gregor and Le Bank are available for cheap I’m sure they are Paul would love to have both of them on the team right now he just said quiet you he’s also Paul’s also saying they’ll have ncoo STM for the next eight years because he wants him to sign a huge extension which I think is absolutely wrong so I’m just going to delete that one out of the chat room right now um and Brar saying musty is so fun to watch I absolutely agree um and Rob just said I have a question for Aaron but that’s all wrote so I’ll wait for that question to come in here um yeah and Creon just uh I’m just going back in his comments defense should be the foundation for this year we have the forwards they know it’s expected of them defense needs special attention I agree um and you don’t talk about possible lines in June too much cap space to bother I agree in fact they have so much cap space they’re below the basement they have to spend money yes they and right now the guys that they have that are uh uh restricted for agents and and even some unrestricted free agents that they’ve announced you know that they not that they announced that they’re going to sign but they didn’t announce that they’re not signing him which is the bank and and Hoffman um they have I think I want to say close to $15 million to get to the floor wow so they’re going to have to go out and spend to get something which is fantastic so there and there’s a couple guys that aren’t going to be able to uh sign anywhere else because a lot of other teams are up against the cap so I don’t think the sharks are going to go out and spend to the cap obviously they have to spend to get to the minimum yes the floor I think they’ll go a little bit above that but they’re not going to sign anyone longterm here it’s all it’s it’ll all be couple years you think it’s because like you said there’s the higher caliber tier of defenseman not this year but next year so kind of like okay we’ll get to the floor we’ll do what we need to do fill out the roster and then we have this cache of money yeah yeah I part of it is they don’t want to lock up too much space long-term wise like they don’t want to sign anyone to a 7-year deal or an 8-year deal right cuz then a lot of those guys that are free agents they’re right now 27 28 29 30 years old you don’t want to lock those guys up into well into their 30s when the sharks aren’t quite there yet and they have that young core that’s going to have to get paid true within four years three years when their their ELC runs out so um yeah like Paul just said like Mitch Marner um let’s talk about Mitch let’s go let’s talk about it Paul and I went back and forth on this one uh and our in our uh our chat you know offline not in the show obviously um what are your thoughts on Mitch Marner coming to San sharks what are your thoughts on him as a player and do you think the Sharks should go after him um I only know him really you obviously fantasy and also his time in Toronto so well known what what yes I would like him to be on the team what what numbers are we talking about cuz I feel like since you already laid out kind of the he would get yeah what what is that he’s probably looking for a long-term deal so seven-year deal he wants to lock it up um man I’m I’m looking at cap friendly right now someone just asked what happened in cap friendly I’ll get into that in a minute too um seven first of all he still has a year left with Toronto I believe let me look that and make sure he’s got one year left at 10.9 so right now Toronto has how much cap space do they have they have 18 million in cap space okay but there’s a couple guys that they need to sign one of them is no Gregor but um they have some stuff coming off the books but they they still have to spend to get some some guys on their team um because they’re a little short here like for instance uh Martin Jones and Ilia Samson offer coming off so they only have one goalie signed Joseph W what was the first name you said sorry which no Martin Jones I just wanted to say Martin Jones I say hey he did he did all right he did you know he got out of San Jose he was okay he was better than he was in San Jose he just got exposed too much in San Jose but regardless anyway the Sharks should have to trade for Marner or I should say Toronto has to trade him away sounds like they’re already going to some of the the way that things have been talked about in Toronto um par this goes back to the playoffs when they’re playing and they lost again in the first round as usual I love it it’s like I absolutely love it I want that streak to go as long as possible this is it makes me feel better about the Sharks not winning a cup when Toronto can’t even get to the finals in 60 years or something like that now almost 60 years um i’ like to see that to go to Triple digits I think that would be amazing wow oh gosh you’re already passed halfway there just keep it going okay all right okay I’ll you I think be fantastic and I love that Toronto fans are like oh the NHL is against us they don’t want Toronto to win I’m like the biggest why would the NHL wants Toronto to win because have the most eyeballs ever on it it’s incredible just the stupidity of some fan bases just baffles me another reason why I don’t want them to win just that fan bases they don’t deserve they don’t know no no it’s great um but yeah Paul’s saying taking on monor would be a one-year deal and they need cap space and obviously good talent um I agree but signing him longterm I don’t think is the best thing for the Sharks I don’t know he’s a great player but to me he’s not the Greer mold of toughness of um he is a very soft player when he’s a different player when it comes to playoffs very different player he he reminds me of say it some of the sharks that okay no don’t say it former sharks got you okay that used to play and um were very different in the playoffs we we we we know yeah anyway uh I’d be interested to see what everyone else has to say about that too if they would Lo Mitch Marner on the team or not long-term wise obviously next year if he was on the team just for one year I wouldn’t mind that at all because they’re not going to be making the playoffs anyway okay as part of it also you’re saying don’t sign him long term because of also you said you know we got to sign the young players four five but the sharks aren’t even close enough where he would be a Difference Maker to okay great we got the eight seed and then we’re going to H steamroll right cuz he’s also going to fade away yeah the point by the time that they’re ready yeah okay he’ll be an older vet on a very expensive salary that I don’t think they would should sign and pay um yeah it’s not I’m off now yeah no it’s not the money that’s the issue for UFA signings of ufas is the age and term desired that’s from shark NATO uh I heavily agree it’s a lot of it has to do with term um not so much the money I’d rather pay someone more money for four or five years yeah um I know and shark NATO I always thought about this imagine if San Jose had gotten tarus remember when that was the thing and Toronto settled for ek65 it would have worked for everyone so the Sharks got Carlson after not getting tarus they went out and got him that same SU maybe like a month later and because that was when we first started the show we were talking the first four or five episodes were us talking about getting Taris right tar and then all of a sudden it falls into our lap of a night we’re about to do a show anyway and Eric Carlson gets traded to the Sharks and here we are it exploded so um and Paul had like $500 in his pocket so he made a rain that’s right he made a rain this $3 bills I think he end monop money yeah um yeah it’s it’s always great about that Shane Pang was always talking about the possibility of wooing Stam Co and I think he has one year left on his deal uh yeah he’s a free agent actually I just don’t think the Sharks will be able to afford I mean he’s kind of at the end of it I don’t know he’s also won a couple cups now so he might be open is that what you’re saying more open to it maybe I’m going to pull this up right now cuz they keep talking about um real quick C friendly is going to go bye-by after right after July there’s like a week after July um so the Washington Capitals purchased cap friendly and they purchased them because they didn’t really have an analytics department and cap friendly has like kind of analytics in there built-in and kind of valuations of of players and and everything else it has really helpful tools um and for those of you who use it a lot like me uh you totally understand like it it’s valuable and so instead of them going out and starting their own thing they just decided we’ll just buy cap friendly and they will now be our employees and work for us and help us value you know valuations of players and making it work long-term wise for cap which most teams have this this is what my Greer is doing too already and what he brought in a team of guys just to to know the cap and and exactly what cap friendly is doing um but just internally with the sharks right when you when you told me that they bought it because they didn’t have anything internal already it blew my mind cuz that seems very surprising that it this isn’t the ECHL we’re talking about right there are some uh very old school people still in the league that are running some teams and they are just now coming around to the analytics you know it’s it’s the stereotypical old person going you know you need to watch the games not stare at the numbers and then it’s the young guy saying no the numbers tell you the the story right well you need a mix of both exactly but they didn’t even have they didn’t even have one exactly they went by you know feel and emotions right yeah oetkin like yeah yeah they had oetkin that was that was the plan work around him figure it out we’ll figure it out it’ll everything work we’ll sign Tom Wilson to an eight-year deal right dang right so uh so that is what’s happening with cap friendly and why Washington purchased them I don’t I don’t agree with it but there’s nothing you can really do about it right there’s nothing illegal they didn’t do anything illegal or wrong or just robbing us just sucks sucks for us anyway uh so the competitor is what is it called again puckpedia puckpedia that’s the new one that’s kind of like C friendly but their interface is very different so it’s just going to take a learia doesn’t roll off the tongue as well yeah uh anyway um what else got here how about we do let’s do a roll call we’re going to do roll call and tell us where you’re watching from so tell us what city you’re watching from and if you what do you think of warski warsi am I saying that right waro what do you think of warso waro there you go the coach the new coach are you excited uh about him coming in are you lukewarm about it are you mad about it tell us tell us WI a winner he is a winner okay he doesn’t lose that’s not true oh W uh fun fact I found this out while I was kind of researching him um he grew up next door to Mike Sullivan who’s the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Mike Sullivan is also an original shark he was on the 91 to 92 993 team um he uh also was the Penguins coach when they beat the sharks in the finals in 2016 anyway he grew up next door to him and he was older Mike was older um but his parents Mike’s parents are the god parents of Ryan of the Sharks coach so they just grew up their families knew each other and and he’s very close with Mike still and and that Mike kind of got him into coaching because he he introduced to him at an early age when he was a kid like just being around um around the game and that around coaching staff at higher levels right like I don’t at that point I don’t think it was quite NHL level where Mike was time so it was a little bit lower but um I think even eventually when he was at the NHL level and then uh Ryan also has a brother that played in the NHL he’s an older brother so he played for I don’t know four or five years with a couple teams kind of bounced around yeah yeah and uh and the Bruins and Avalanche yeah okay so I think he’s still playing professionally but in Europe he’s not playing in the NHL anymore but um just a hockey family being around and you know from Massachusetts so anyway it’s kind of cool loves he loves Massachusetts I do I’m not totally dumping on Massachusetts I like Massachusetts certain Pockets right there is a you are dumping on Massachusetts is there yeah it’s kind of hard to keep following with all of these uh comments fing in here which is good yeah it’s on screen a oh there we go the only one that is tired uh of the Sharks hiring anyone with ties in the New England area I don’t really care where they’re from I want them to win yeah it doesn’t bother me I don’t they could all be from Canada what’s the difference right yeah it’s there’s no difference our fan basically the ones who get to celebrate right yeah yeah again and I’ll go back to like I’ve talked about this in previous episodes these players don’t have loyalties to teams they have they want to play in the league they don’t care where they’re playing I mean obviously they care a little bit if they have any kind of say but if you’re talking about those Fringe players that are just trying to make a team they want to play on anything put me on let’s go I’m not talking the allstars that get to dictate where they go like the higher end free agents this is everybody else outside of that high-end Talent they just want to stick in the NHL and not be playing in the KHL where uh planes crash down when they’re going to sorry too soon too soon um but you know what I mean like they want to play in the best league and they want to obviously make a good salary and a a living playing a child’s game getting paid money and uh yeah so there’s not really any loyalty to teams here so I I don’t really doesn’t bother me I mean you you kind of hire the people that you know Mike Greer it’s a very old what’s it called uh good old boys network in a way not always but in a way um especially like you think about Mike Greer he’s from the area he’s from the Boston area yeah so he has a lot of ties out there so he could probably call up a ton of coaches and say Hey you know give me the inside deal on this guy and it might not even be him it could be other you know people that work for M grid that are vetting and and doing all this for these players but I don’t think they’re only hiring Boston people I don’t think they’re only searching in that area I hope not cuz that would be foolish right yeah it just happens to be there’s a lot of Massachusetts and New England people or at least play hockey a lot out there they do right they do yeah they like it’s a it’s a different kind of culture different kind of life so yeah um doesn’t bother me I I want to say that I think it’s kind of cool it’s it’s kind of f either way it’s almost like a joke right like oh they’re from massachus or they’re from New England and they’re over 6’4 that’s that the kind of guys that that Mike Greer likes to bring in here right anyone that’s over six FL and they’re from New England done you don’t even have to try out here yeah here’s some skates welcome to the team um yeah uh robot said he’s he’s watching from Vegas jumbo isn’t ready to head coach yet I’ll let this one slide um he’s not coaching yet because his kids are still young okay and he wants a break and he wants to be able to do stuff he’s around the team he’s around the rank all the time but I don’t think he wants to quite jump grind yeah be those kids exactly makes sense I mean if you look at we have Scott Hannon and Mark Smith and Paul could back me up here he they both help coach their kids teams right now I could see them once their kids are older and they’re done playing hockey or they’re playing in college and they’re no longer yeah needing their dads around to coach um they could probably jump in on the staff and help out I could see that happening um but yeah uh uh shark NATO over 64 when was the last time the Sharks traded or drafted for play over six feet uh I guess you haven’t been paying attention last two years CU that’s like all G has been doing mostly dud yeah huge dudes musty that like the the old regime of Wilson before that they were doing more I know Ron uh Ron Wilson uh Doug Wilson Jr was very big on uh athletic guys he didn’t care about the size as long as they had athleticism um so they would take more of a chance on on smaller guys but who were very like kind of freakish athletes and very in shape that was the kind of guys that they went for and that’s the kind of guys that are in the shark system that are a little bit older than the ones that Greer has drafted because he’s only been here for two years so I think uh we’re seeing a lot of those guys kind of get move they’re moving on from and either trading them away or just not signing them and they’ve slowly turned it over um the bosson influence is real yeah exactly switching over right yeah oh and Paul just said even gresy couldn’t coach a winner it’s not about how good you were as a player when it comes to coaching that’s true that’s true I can’t imagine having wi grusky as a coach because he would he probably doesn’t you know when you’re really good you don’t you don’t it’s intive it’s like yeah Bond’s hitting coach yeah exactly how do you teach it well just go out there and hit it right just just do it just do it like this like that’s you know not to say gresy wasn’t a good coach but uh he did coach the Coyotes for a while and that’s right they didn’t do too well and then then then they left that’s why they left that’s why they’re gone yeah it’s gry’s fault why they left fault yeah it’s entirely his fault you have a Utah comment about that I have a what comment Utah comment oh where is it I missed it just came in Utah is doubling their jersey sales by punting the real name one season down the road that’s double Christmas and birthday jerseys for new kids fans that’s true because they announced they’re not announc ing the name for another year so they’re going to play colorways right yeah they just announced the colors and they just so they’re they’re doing one full season question out of nowhere why didn’t Utah go with Yeti Utah Hockey Club sounds lame they already decided to do Utah Hockey Club for one year while they decide on the name so Yeti could is still in the running um I wonder if they have a trademark oh yeah yeah maybe oh well here we go Yeti the the cup free plug Here There You Go Yeti um I don’t know if that’s true or not I’ll just make that up but uh uh oh demonetized oh great great uhoh oops um I had that on the air too long I can only get it for three seconds I’m joking I’m joking um so yeah it’s kind of smart they are really kind of drawing this out I think it’s kind of annoying it’s getting to that annoying stage because then they’re like oh we we have 20 names and you can vote to narrow it down to the next six and then whatever then wait and wait and wait whole another year and the double like they said yeah it’s smart and then watch you know what’s going to happen it’s like the Washington football club right they did that for how many seasons two yeah two season or three yeah something like that then they became the commanders I can’t remember what their name is it is commanders command um watch they’re going to go Utah Hockey Club for a season this probably where they pulled the from that Playbook from from Washington they saw how much they sold yeah and um and excitement right like anti like what is it going to be we finally have a name I me Washington is really dumb with the way they did it cuz they didn’t trademark anything and so people were jumping on I know oh right yeah and just yeah taking every all the better names at least Utah they were a little bit smarter but you can look to see what they’ve trademarked so they’re kind of expecting to be there’s a couple names in there and I think Yeti was one in there so was blizzard one I think so okay which is just Gary Queen sponsor all over the there you go think about that’s not all I’m going to think about now wow um but it’d be funny if they just said H you know what we’re just going to keep Utah Hockey Club they probably won’t because they want to sell more stuff but um shark NATO will be blizzard and they should just match the Jazz color scheme like all the Pittsburgh teams go with black and gold you know what funny fun fact Pittsburgh is the only city that has all of their sports with the same color scheme there’s no other city that has multiple professional sports that color that follow the same color scheme they have all three right they have baseball hockey football they don’t have basketball so yeah all three right all three are golden black smart you just wear black you wear your gold yeah whatever you want smart that’s smart is it though cuz they don’t sell as much well I don’t know well do people love having like at least the Branded like well you’re right okay I can see either I can see both you can wear your football jersey to a hockey game and nobody would blink right cuz it looks the same you’re right whereas if it was a different color scheme you wouldn’t want to wear it so like Vegas what do you mean people hop on the bandwagon they just wear whatever Jersey oh right yeah but imagine Raiders at a Vegas game black okay yeah and now the A’s are coming they’re going to be I’m assuming they’re going to stay green who knows they might Rebrand too soon are we talking about that yeah we’re not talking about that yeah that’s a lot that’s a whole another show I broke it again dang it that’s right two uh uh Peter St John the Sharks sort of did the same thing when they were starting up they had to contest yes but this contest ended before the season started so they had a name and colors and everything before the season started whereas Utah is going into the season as the Utah Hockey Club and they just announced last week I think it was the Jersey the color scheme and the logo and everything and they use like the Utah outline it’s like the most boring state in the United States practically um but yeah here comes the hait mail yeah it’s not like there’s a lot of fans there actually there are a lot of fans there they already sold a ton of season tickets in Utah okay so it it’ll be good it’s it’ll be good for the sport in the long run something new yeah yeah something new and before let go see my team or whatever I might go we’ll see what I’m trying to do I’ve talked about this I want to go I want to go visit some away games during the season I got we got to wait for the schedule to come out so I can kind of plan it out but I I was hoping to go to Arizona this season talk about I wanted to go to Mullet Arena now it’s already G about so I’m disappointed that I missed out on that plus I was like at that time I was like the Sharks might have the first overall pick we might get to go see mlin celebrini and Will Smith and guess what it’s happening so I’d like to go uh Colorado Seattle Seattle not all of these but Colorado Seattle Anaheim and LA easy because they’re close maybe even Vegas who knows I really want to but now Utah instead of Arizona okay and Vancouver cuz that’s not that much further from Seattle so if they were to play both of them maybe that’d be Co to do oh yeah both cities you’re right there yeah right going from Utah to Vegas would be that’s that’s an interesting yeah very different yeah very um yes two ends of the spectrum really uh yeah Nick just said a a Ron you can go with me to away games perfect how many are you going to go to Nick you going to make a bunch of that too a lot of Road trips there not even road trips flights he made Chicago last year right this last he went to a couple he went to he sent us some images it was cool oh I forgot now Chicago and Minnesota oh Minnesota or I don’t know you could tell me Nick um I guarantee those coyote and Utah players are bummed I don’t know about that I don’t know if would you be sad that you’re leaving mullet Arena and going to go play in a bigger Arena that’s going to be sold out with crazy fans that all excited first year you’re right yeah they’re going to just be swarming all over you fan fair but maybe they meant the outside the the lify yeah literally outside the arena once we leave the arena I think it has gotten better okay than what it used to be even 20 years ago okay and I’ve never been so I’m just yeah me neither I just you know I always thought like oh they don’t sell alcohol anywhere but they do there’s bars and they don’t sell we did find that out yeah they don’t sell I that that was one of the questions if they sell lower ABV or not and they don’t they sell normal okay ABV beers and drinks I just don’t know but you could pay by check you could pay by check yes what in Utah is that a joke no you could pay by check you could still a thing like at a bar yes stop okay no come on last time I was there someone paid by check at a fast food restaurant and I was like this holds up the line like crazy what’s a check what yeah does that mean they don’t have like tap to pay anywhere it’s so old school years take credit cards and they all these young young people on here like what are they talking about leave your Apple watches in in Arizona you don’t need them other than step counters you don’t need him uh Nick went to Calgary Edmonton two seasons ago and Columbus Chicago this last season that’s what it was Columbus was the other one he’s not going down yeah that’s pretty cool that would be fun to do um oh and they don’t drink on Sundays in Utah so we will not be going to a Sunday Sharks game in Utah nobody will be traveling those yes no thank you shark NATO Utah the Winnipeg of the US that’s funny that’s funny that is that explains Winnipeg more that’s right to people who don’t know Canada that wellip that’s um a lot of Utah talk on this yeah there is a lot of Utah talk I mean I guess they’re kind of in the news because whatever um oh so one other thing I wanted to bring up during the press conference today Mike Greer stepped up at the very end of the press conference and said something that I thought was a little not weird but like I don’t know why he needed to yeah why he came up and was like I just want to dispel any rumors anything out there about Logan CER being traded he’s not being traded um and the rumors need to stop kind of thing it was like whoa okay because I never really read I mean I’m not really it’s summertime baby I’m not really like reading up on a whole right that’s right so so he’s being traded for sure now yeah that’s what I that’s what made me think I was like wow maybe there is something in the works because why would he come out and say offer why would you offer that information with any prompt no one there’s rumors all the time like why now would you come out and say that it’s not happening I don’t know it just came off as a little weird to me um and shark NATO Mike Greer lit Shang Pang up twice a day I think I like Shang he’s a good guy he asks a lot of questions kind of directing The Narrative of what wants to write about and Greer sniffs it out and snuffs it out I don’t think it’s malicious I don’t think he hates them or anything I think he’s just like I’m not going to play that game exactly game like he knows he already knows what he’s trying to do so he’s just like he doesn’t fall into the Trap that’s what I think it’s more like it’s not so much they don’t hate each other I know that for sure so um but it is kind of funny when he does shut him down not just Shang like anybody right like just just said before yeah he kind of smiles too he’s like well Shang if I knew that answer yeah yeah exactly yeah Quinn did it last season was that two seasons ago last season we’re going to bring that back yeah um yeah anyway so Kure traded okay great yeah Paul not yeah okay yeah can’t get traded if you retire yeah I don’t know I mean coacher even said last trade deadline people kept ask him if he was asking to leave like out of San Jose and wanting to get traded and he was like who’s going to trade for a 35-year-old that’s hurt like nobody’s going to trade for me so even if he wanted to get out he’s not going to get out because he’s hurt and I honestly I don’t know if he’s going to play he might retire we might see him retire which would be very sad but um the way his injury is unless he made some big gains this summer of gains as in like no pain getting out of bed kind of thing where he can even think about hockey um just walking yeah standing yeah that’s what you said it’s like it’s a pelvic thing that you use just moving your body and I guess the way he skates like if anything he probably has to retrain his body on how to skate differently which is just weird I mean that’s like a golfer changing their swing right like that’s just yeah or a baseball player changing their swing too like it’s just weird you can’t it’s doable but it’s a lot of work work and he’s 35 worth the squeeze yeah and he’s got two kids now or at least one more on the way so he’s got little kids he’s got to think about you know post NHL yeah exactly um so anyway I don’t know I don’t know what’s going on with him I don’t know how health he is or or not and uh I just I just thought it was odd that he came out and said that I don’t know see if there’s any comments in there about coacher um who oh wait oh no wait go go did you have one other there uh shark NATO just said Shang is a good guy but Greer called him out for being inaccurate that’s because I think he put up there a scenario or something and then oh what it was um it was the coaching staff so he said hey you know there’s rumors that you were interviewing these other guys for coaches what made you want to do that and he goes oh was that was that a rumor or was that your report and he goes yeah that was my report and he goes yeah it was inaccurate okay that’s a called him out okay yeah that one counts like basically you don’t know or your insiders don’t know that you think are insiders like they’re giving you the wrong information kind of thing um yeah yeah so that was kind of funny kind of a little humorous thing it was again it wasn’t malicious it wasn’t no he’s kind of like it didn’t stop him he asked like four more questions I thought it was funny you know Shang writes something like a kind of a speculation thing and then says like hey you know according to this report he goes wait what report was that was that your report signed by me but Ian still a report still Yes um wickedly Charming Greer is tough he is tough and yeah I think uh I think he’s doing a great job I think there was a comment in in the other chat on the Sharks chat when during the thing um someone had mentioned this he said almost every trade that Greer’s done everyone kind of dumped on it saying it was awful and every trade in hindsight now looks like Greer’s way ahead I remember that yeah yeah give a couple the team everyone thought the team my tra was disastrous and here we are with zerin who’s now a 25 goal scorer uh we have the first round pick turned into Quinton musty the second round pick is this upcoming draft so who knows what they’re going to get with him uh that’s a lot of replacement parts for for team o meire that signed a eight-year deal I believe New Jersey it was eight eight by eight maybe something like that f the Sharks were going to sign him to that so um yeah I I’m I’m happy about what he has done so far on top of that I think look at all the guys he’s drafted in the last two seasons especially last season I don’t remember this many prospects doing so well at their respective levels of where they are right now there might be one or two but it’s like it’s almost like they can’t they can’t miss that’s what it seems like I mean they still haven’t made the NHL most of them but uh I don’t remember that many sharks prospects at least doing that well I just remember oh this this guy was drafted oh maybe we’ll hear about him in a couple years who knows who knows yeah we wouldn’t hear about it for three years we might pop up and then it wouldn’t work out right yeah so he’s hitting the Mark I think on a lot of these guys and uh yeah Peter St John does Greer have a long shot for GM of the year I would say if and this is a big if if the Sharks came out of nowhere on a hot St right and they’re in the pack in the middle of the pack by the end of the year and maybe even pushing for a playoff bubble spot which would be miraculous I’m not saying it’s going to happen but weird things happen in hockey all the time uh I would say that he would be in the conversation I think winning the results have to do it and in fact the coach too uh warski yeah waro thank you nailed it he uh he would probably be up for Coach the if they were to make playoffs in the first year true oh yeah expectations and also what they did last year and then just yeah yeah and I’m not saying they’re going to I’m not saying it’s going to happen that’s not going to happen but if it did happen if it did happen if it did happen there you go okay I I think that’s where to go celebrini leading the way oh yeah you would you’d have to think that he would be a huge um influence on if they wow all you know what no just just be outside the bottom five and then I’m fine with that yep yeah oh I forgot part of that team o my trade was uh Muk Mullan who is going to be probably the starting in the in the top six defenseman for the NHL he’ll probably be in the NHL okay this season starting this season so that’s another piece of the trade that’s crazy that’s a lot of pieces coming back that for one guy yeah one guy that wasn’t going to be signing with the sharks again which is fine yeah um cuz the sharks have four four picks and I think in the top 42 yes yeah so they’ll get four guys in the top 50 wow prospects in this draft this draft’s not as strong as the last season but it’s still yeah four four shots of getting yeah four lottery tickets we already yeah one’s already one’s a for sure yeah NHL guy um but yeah there we go um grandizer uh the flip side of that where the Sharks start out cold build developed by the end of the season pushing for top seed and go very deep in the playoffs if not the way wait what what what there’s a first part to that com oh sorry you had three levels of the Teemo trade those that hated it those that liked it and those that liked it but wish the Sharks got more it’s true people wanted that higher-end Prospect to come back instead of a couple of the prospects that came back um or the flip side of that where the Sharks start out Cole Bill develop by the end of the season pushing for a top seed and go very deep in the playoffs if not all the way um uh wickedly Charming so does Greer look ahead of the rebuild I think they’re asking is he out of the rebuilding phase I don’t think he’s out of rebuilding but I do think he’s out of the tearing down phase okay there’s not much left to tear down I mean coocher and blasic I think are just going to play out their contracts I don’t think they’re going to get traded um they’re just the two least tradable guys they and it doesn’t matter at this point because they have so much space cap space that uh they don’t need to be moved and the sharks aren’t going to be going anywhere for another season or two so again make that move for like that missing piece right just okay this is our core going to develop and just see what happens internally with our young players bring in some veterans okay yeah um yeah I think I think uh right now it’s just adding it’s less subtracting and a lot of people want like there’s a question here about do you think uh where is it that the Sharks would trade up package the 14 32 and 4 second overall to trade up for d man I don’t think so cuz there’s some high-end defenseman that are in the draft that are going to go in like the top 10 and the sharks are sitting at 14 so they’re just outside of it to me it doesn’t make sense they’re not in a spot still I don’t think where trading up makes sense yeah if anything they would be trading down to get more picks um maybe that’s what we see is they wait until the 14th pick to see who’s left and if there’s anyone that’s Fallen they’ll take them and if not they’ll say we’ll trade down and get another late first with another second or something like that so um or maybe a prospect who knows someone else could have a log jab in a certain position and they want to do right by that Prospect to get them in the pipeline of the sharks are they from Boston probably yeah over 64 and from Boston absolutely we’ll take them no questions asked let’s go um but yeah and Paul’s saying the same thing I think he’s ahead of where he ought to be I agree I think I mean especially getting celebrating is jump starting this I think a whole full season true I think that that stops another full year of just being terrible um it certainly is going to help selling tickets which they oh yeah and they tal yeah they talked about that John the beer said that was the the best retention of season tickets that they’ve ever had um and then there was definitely a big jump when they found out that the they won the lottery of season tickets new ones yeah um and yeah he didn’t really he didn’t give any numbers there but it’s okay it’s like yeah we had 6,000 season ticket holders and they’re all you know 90% of them are returning I’m sure that makes sense but you know you had a couple more yeah it makes sense and some people upgraded you know maybe they upgrade their tickets and so yeah but also the watch party they said they you hear those numbers right yeah was it over 10,000 was like I think it was like 12 like 12 or 15 it was something crazy yeah they increased capacity to 15 I think yeah okay so they sold the largest draft party ever in the NHL last here for Chicago at 5,000 and we’re already doubled that double that yeah so if you haven’t already and you’re going to be in town next Friday the sharks are doing a draft party and it’s free and uh you just have to reserve your ticket through the Sharks website on Ticket Master you don’t to pay anything you just have to put in your information so you get a scan barcode they just need to know their numbers um because they’re going to have to open up food stands and have enough bathrooms open and seats open and everything know it’s Logistics they need to know how many people um more so get on there yeah we were there last season we will be there again this season um and I believe uh we will also be joined by Graham again this year he’s going to be kind of our he’s our Prospect guy and knows a lot about all of the players that are about to be drafted um tell us who he thinks the Sharks should be picking obviously in the 14th spot and uh if they should be trading up or down like it’ll be it’ll be good and then we’ll have we haven’t we I asked the Sharks but they don’t know yet what alumni are coming outside of Patrick Marlo will be there so I’m hopeful that Marlo will be able to sit in with us on the show for you know 10 minutes or so 5 10 minutes he’s there just come on S take a seat take a load off come on man uh he’ll be there I’m hoping some other alumni will be there that we haven’t had on the show yet I’m sure Scot H will be there unless he’s doing something else um I know all of the announcers will be there um I forgot who else they said Do You Remember Jay there’s some other names I thought they threw around in there but uh what time time do it start I believe is it 3: to 6 yeah cuz it’s East Coast time it’s they so they show the draft on the big screen on the Jumbotron and there’s no ice on at the at the floor so you can go on the floor on the cement and they have a mechanical shark instead of a bull oh that you can ride they last year they had a ice cream truck they had Mr Softy Ice Cream Mr on there yeah and they had some other games oh the Patrick Marlo Banner the retired Jersey is going to be down so you can take a picture with it um I forgot what else there’s some other stuff there that’s on the floor and then it’s basically just kind of open so you can walk in and sit down and and watch and get food you can yeah sit wherever you want and and the draft is on the center hung the entire uh run of the event so there’s you know commercial breaks and all that stuff too but um they’re they’re giving a lot of information about you know what’s coming up and what teams are about to pick who yep we are doing a live show so we will be there uh we’ll let you know what time we will be starting cuz we don’t even know yet but it’ll go obviously we we’ll be live before the first overall pick um that’ll be so exciting like we don’t know who who they’re going to take who is it going to be that’s kind of exciting that there is a consensus number one cuz that would suck if there wasn’t yeah all those then there would be so many debates of you should have taken this guy over that guy why you take him when it’s like okay that that makes it easy um where to park for for the event I treat it like a normal Sharks game I think free parking lots ABC so the general huge parking lot just like last year it’s free entry yeah yeah it’s going to fill fast for over 10,000 fans coming that lot probably hold 6,000 yeah oh maybe less yeah I’d say less um so I’m probably well we’ll be parking close because we got to get there early anyway we got to bring we haul this whole place not the desk thankfully but no oh I broke it I hit it too hard um but yeah we’ll be there we’ll hang up our banner up uh we’re kind of at the sweet level so like the midsite level you’ll see us uh somewhere around we think yeah and we’ll have I’m assuming we’re going to be where we were last year and we’ll have our Banner hanging out so when you’re on the floor you’ll be able to see our banner and um you’ll see the big bright lights and we’ll have the Jumbotron will be behind us that will be sorry not the Jumbotron it will not be Cent hung the center hung whatever the Jumbotron it’s the same thing everyone knows what I’m talking about when I say Jumbotron come on even even Paul said it all in caps he’s shouting it from Hawaii I heard him I can’t hear him I still can’t hear him hi Paul yeah aon’s tuned him out for six years yeah I just realized Paul’s not even here oh yes he’s not Oh Katie just joined hi Katie uh I was telling her about it and she should bring her her uh husband and son to the game or to the draft party not game yeah not draft party watch yeah draft party yeah it’ll be fun it’s it’s a good time and uh it’s exciting because it’s There’s Hope if you will or you know it’s an exciting time because you know the sharks are terrible so they’re only going to get better and you’re seeing the core getting created so celebrini and Will Smith Eckland those three guys musty I want to throw in there just cuz I love them so much exactly um they are going to be the next core of the Sharks and we’re watching them I mean to me it’s like for basketball terms it’s like Steph Curry’s about to get drafted and they already have at this point Draymond Green anday Klay Thompson as Will Smith you know what I mean like you have those those certain pieces that are coming together and the Giants linum posy yeah and they’re all going to grow together right they’re not going to be great yet but they will be in in a couple Seasons down the road and right now is the perfect time to jump on the madwagon because you will be in the know for years and be able to watch them grow and get better I mean just this season alone watching eckan from start to finish he started the season and he was you see the flashes of it right yeah and it was good but then towards the last like third of the Season it was every night he was doing something exciting and doing something correct and doing something that was maybe even if it wasn’t getting him on the score on the score sheet uh he was dictating the play and and something magical or exciting was going to happen with him on the ice so that’s kind of where I see these guys are going to be you’re going to see their Growing Pains it’s not going to be that’s fine that’s fine great every night but that’s what they got to learn I mean at this point these guys are the most time most games played in their career for a year is probably close to 60 oh wow that’s not 55 to 60 their bodies aren’t us yeah it’s grueling it is a grueling Pace um anyway uh oh cron just said I have to mail you guys some sharks cards for the background that would be awesome if you want to we’ll uh you can send us an email out the ffactor gmail.com and we can coordinate that um here we go so anything else you’d like to add are you going to be there on Friday next Friday I will do my best to be there on FR maybe yeah you come hang out come of course I’ll find the BR join us if you want yeah you’ll find us Center hung Center [Laughter] H I want to be welcome back so that’s why I said yeah n um yeah anyway I don’t know if there’s any other comments in here do you see any J that you want to highlight in here before we go we’re good no short show short show okay it’s only an hour short show but uh yeah thank you for filling once again yes Paul I’m sure thanks you from Hawaii thank you Jason and uh I guess that’ll sign up so for super producer Jason I’m Aaron I’m Deo and Don't want any part of Marner. Perimeter player not good for playoff hockey. Not that we are making the playoffs any time soon but I don't want a team leader setting the example for the younger players. Especially for that price. The only upside is that he will sell some tickets
