NOBODY Wanted To See The Minnesota Vikings Do This.. | NFL News (Dallas Turner, JJ McCarthy)

Justin Jefferson are record setting fouryear deal with the Vikings that includes $110 million in guaranteed money $140 million overall in the time leading up to the draft we talked about how the Vikings were a dream destination for a rookie quarterback for a number of reasons that group of skill players LED of course by Justin Jefferson because they got Addison they just got Aaron Jones like they got some skilled players and I know they feel like JJ McCarthy can step in there and paint by numbers and do our offense you know you guys I’m just going to go ahead and jump straight into the Minnesota Vikings at this point because with everything I’m seeing coming out about this team and with everything they’ve done this off season to make this team better I really do think they’re going to surprise a lot of people with how good they are right off the bat as we all know they added a bunch to an offense that was already really talented which makes me extremely confident in what this unit can potentially be and as far as the defense goes they also added a ton of people here to fill in weaknesses that they had last year it’s going going to make this unit a lot better as well and I think it’s pretty easy to understand that if one side of the ball gets better and the other side of the ball gets better you’re going to be a better team unless some crazy things end up happening and I really do think the Vikings are going to be a better team than they were last year but before we get into why I exactly believe that if you like Minnesota Vikings content just like this make sure to coming off a season where they missed the playoffs mainly due to the two best players on the offense getting injured in Justin Jefferson and Kurt Cousins so I mean I didn’t expect them to make the playoffs but coming into this off season they needed to make some moves to get better and they also had to make the decision of whether they wanted to keep Kirk Cousins as their quarterback or they wanted to move on and find someone else and as we all know they picked to move on and find somebody else and they did that by going out with the 10th overall pick and taking JJ McCarthy out of Michigan I know this pick has a lot of question marks surrounding it and there’s some people that hate it and there’s some people that love it but if you’re looking at this from an analyst point of view you should love it watching JJ McCarthy on tapate he didn’t get a ton of opportunities to throw the ball but when he did get opportunities to throw the ball he made the best of them and he showed me exactly what you want in a franchise quarterback especially one that’s going into a Kevin oconnell type scheme he showed me that he can play in structure and he can go through his reads and find the open guy and he showed me that he can make things happen out of structure if you desperately need him to and that sums up pretty easily what you want in a quarterback obviously there’s a bunch of different traits that he has that I think are also going to translate well to the NFL but to keep it simple I think he can do what Kevin okono wants him to do without doing too much and that should make him a pretty good quarterback right off the bat now reports recently came out that Sam darnold is probably going to be the starter for the Vikings week one and while yes I want to see JJ McCarthy on the field I also don’t hate the idea of starting Sam darnold especially since JJ McCarthy is only 21 years old JJ has plenty of time to grow and develop and learn and get better and I think that’s all the Vikings are trying to to do here they just want him to get his feet under himself a little bit and they want him to grow a little bit before he gets in actual action so I do like the idea of starting Sam darnold for half the season or the whole year and letting JJ learn under him now when talking about Sam darnold he’s also a guy that I like a lot and I think he’s going to mesh well with what Kevin oconnell wants to do in this offense because he’s not a guy that wants to run around and make crazy things happen he’s a guy that’s similar to Kirk that wants to play in structure and find open guys and that’s the kind of quarterback you want to have especially with the roster that the Vikings have Vikings of course have two great tackles and Christian darol and Brian O’Neal who are going to keep the quarterback protected so whoever is playing should have time to throw the football and then as far as the weapons go you really couldn’t ask for any more considering you have Justin Jefferson the best receiver in the NFL as your receiver number one Jordan Addison one of the best receiver twos in the NFL as a rookie as your receiver number two and one of the best receiving tight ends in the NFL and TJ Hawkinson now I know T.J hawson is coming off an injury but it’s really his first big time injury and he’s still only 26 years old old so I expect him to come back from it just fine and I think he’s going to be a great safety blanket for whatever quarterback is playing I expect Kevin oconnell to make the offense as simple as possible for both of these guys and to make the priority to get the ball in your playmaker’s hands and let them do the work and if Sam darnold and JJ mccarthur are able to do that this offense is going to be good I expect this passing attack to be a top 15 to a top 10 unit in football if not even better but why I’m so high on this offense isn’t just because of the passing attack it’s also due to the fact they went out this off season and added someone that I really really like that’s going to add another element of Versatility the guy I’m talking about is Aaron Jones at the running back position and the reason I’m so high on this pickup is because Aaron Jones is an absolute freak of nature when he’s healthy and every time he’s in a game he makes the team he’s playing for have a good run game and I expect him to do the exact same thing for the Vikings he’s extremely versatile in the way you can use him and I expect Kevin oconnell to put him in the best position to succeed kind of similar to how he put dvin cook in a great position to succeed and if he does that I expect this rushing attack to be one of the better run games in the league and if you have one of the better run games in the league to pair with a passing attack that consist of all the weapons that the Vikings have it’s going to make life against opposing defenses pretty easy you can use play action to confuse the defense which will help get guys wide open down the field and that’s something that’s going to help out Sam darnold or JJ McCarthy they’re not only going to have time to throw but they’re also going to have a lot bigger Windows to throw into because the defense has to respect the Run game due to Aaron Jones being back there and that’s the exact reason why the Vikings went out and got him but as we all know you don’t just need an offense to win football games you also need a defense and that’s something people were worried about coming into this off season when it came to the Vikings but I think they did a pretty good job at adding pieces to make this defense better the first thing you notice pretty quickly is this defensive line because of everything they did here and that starts with the free agency additions of Jonathan gard and Andrew van GLE the reason you notice this so quickly is because both of these guys are coming off great seasons and they’re both going to be able to give you extremely good Edge play immediately you did lose denil hunter but I would rather have both of these guys than one guy and that’s why I’m so high on getting rid of denil and not giving him a huge contract and signing these two guys instead they’re both coming off like I said great seasons and I only expect their production to stay the same and if that’s the case this defensive line is going to be extremely good considering you also went out and got an absolute steal in the draft by taking Dallas Turner at pick 17 I don’t think there should have been any way that Dallas Turner fell this far so it was a great job by the Vikings to trade up and get this guy because this guy brings every single trait you want in the defensive end to the table which is why I’m so high on this pick he has great size and he has extremely long arms so in a few years I wouldn’t be surprised if he was one of the best Ed rushers in the league but at the minimum I think he’s going to come in and be a solid to good player in year one simply due to the fact that he started at Alabama and played really good there he played against the best competition in college and when you watch his tape he absolutely dominated almost every tackle that he went against so I’m pretty confident that that’s going to transfer over to the NFL now when you move back to the linebacker room I also love what you have here because you firstly already have Ivan Pace Jr who was an undrafted free agent last year that broke out into being a really really good player and then to go along with him you also went out and signed that guy Blake Cashman who I think is extremely underrated Blake Cashman was a huge reason why the Houston Texans defense had the success that they had last year and you could feel when he wasn’t on the field because of how good of a player he is and I expect him to bring that same level of play over to Minnesota so I really do think this linebacker Duo is going to be something special especially since Brian Flores is the defensive coordinator I know he puts all of his players in a great position to succeed and uses them to the best of their ability and I expect him to do the same thing with the linebacker room and the defensive line to make up a great front seven as a whole now as far as the secondary goes you also needed to add some pieces here to help Brian Flores out some to give him more to work with and I think you gave him some pieces that he can definitely make work out you of course already had Byron Murphy Jr who I like a decent amount you of course already had a Caleb Evans that I like a decent amount in certain situations and you still had the rookie that you took last year and Makai Blackman who did sew some flashes as a rookie so hopefully he’ll get even better going into year two now even with those guys though you needed to add some more pieces and the Vikings did this by firstly going out in the draft and getting that guy Kyrie Jackson out of Oregon in the fourth round he’s going to immediately make this secondary better and then on top of that you also went out and added Shaquille Griffin who I also think is going to make this secondary better whiches up a Corner Room overall that might not be the greatest but it’s definitely not the worst and it gives Brian Flores a lot of versatile pieces to work with which is the perfect coach to give that to I already know he’s going to be running a ton of crazy blitzes with a ton of crazy coverages on the back end and that’s going to confuse a lot of opposing offenses and I’m confident that he’s going to be able to do that at a high level considering you also have Harrison Smith on the back end who can still play at a really high level and you have that guy Cameron bham who played really really good for you last year who’s going to be going into His Four Season and that’s usually when players start hitting their Peak so I mean I don’t know what to tell you I know the defense isn’t perfect in every single position but as a whole I really do think they have a shot to be really good and when you pair that with an offense that has talent all over the board and two quarterbacks that could be really good for you I like what this team brings to the table and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they find themselves in a playoff game with a chance to win it
