Why DaRon Holmes II is an obvious fit next to Nikola Jokic & the Nuggets | DNVR Nuggets Podcast

Calvin Booth got his guy Dayton’s dayon Holmes is a Denver Nugget we’re going to be breaking it down all of the takeaways and explaining why the future is bright in Denver we’ll see you on the other side [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] baby turn it up the least mystery of all drafts of all time you know we knew it we knew it what is everybody welcome to the dnba show you were live for us with us for 3 hours you’re going to be live with us for another hour as we wrapped up the 2024 first round of the NBA draft and the Denver Nuggets get their guy Dron Holmes out of date and we’re going to be breaking it down brenon vote is in the house man who thought they could have an exciting and fun outcome picking at 28 all they had to do is trade up to 22 what true man what a treat it’s like there was mystery and not mystery all at the same time over here Harrison wind we talked about in the leadup to this draft how Calvin Booth could come out of it and improve his standing among the fan basee he did just that he got his guy he got the guy that nuggets Nation wanted and um I mean it’s a great ending to a long night he did get his guy rounding out the show Superstar Dev I’m not a guy that’s like really big or good with surprises so it was great to not be surprised tonight knew who we were going to get went out and got him love it dev’s like I typically prepare for one scenario at best I mean if you just skim the draft and did the bare minimum of draft prep he would have been great for this show hypothetically I wouldn’t do something like that who would well let’s break it down this is the guy Dron Holmes uh 610 I think he actually measured it what six what was it at the with shoes or without shoes what are we talking 69ine with shoes um player out of Dayton threeyear player out of Dayton really good guy you see it up on the board a lob threat High motor high upside I would add good IQ good feel for the game team player uh and honestly versatile I would say defensive versatility or at least upside of defensive versatility really interesting player what can you tell us about him wind well donon Holmes I mean he’s the guy that has been mocked to Denver the most throughout this entire pre-draft process there were some rumors out there that the Nuggets had promised him at 28 overall and you know the closer we got to the draft it was becoming pretty obvious even though he was still mocked a little bit at 28 to the Nuggets that he was likely not going to be there when the Nuggets were on the clock at 28 uh so what do the Nuggets do they go up and get him and what stands out to me the most about Don Holmes is his offense he is a very skilled and Polished big man uh he can score out of the post he’s got a lot of moves in his Arsenal there he can shoot the three shot 37% from three last year I like his stroke I think his shot looks good I think he’s going to be a good shooter and be able to stretch the floor at the next level and in between you know he looks pretty natural and fluid in pick and rolls he looks pretty natural and fluid and pick and pops he’s ready to go I think he’s a finished product you know as a 21-year-old right which is somewhat rare at this day and age I don’t know if I’d say finished product though cuz I actually like the upside I mean it almost sounds like you’re to me I think that he has a lot of headro on top of being a guy that has a solid foundation already yeah what I mean by finished product is just like he’s ready to contribute now in the NBA uh he’s NBA ready and he fits the mold of what Calvin booth has looked for in these last couple drafts experience and you know they’re not going to need a lot of seasoning with him I don’t think so it’s a great pick it’s the pick we thought they would Target all along and I mean you look at his skill set offensively and how he fits into the Nugget second unit that needed a big man and it’s a home run pick Dev what what do you think I mean with with the way that Harrison just set the table it just it really does sound perfect um he used the word polished he used the word um ready right now that that’s that’s big especially for Denver that is trying to maximize having the best player in basketball right now getting young guys you typically have to wait for them to to grow into being able to play you usually have to wait a couple of years for them to get into that so you hear words like raw and unfinished product um so I like the fact that he he can play right now because Denver truly does need him to play right now you could add a guy in a draft that that is part of your future but as as far as right now as well that goes a long way and then as far as Calvin boof I mean I really do love the transparency and the fact of this is the guy that we truly want we’re going to do anything that we can to make it happen so for them to um push up a little bit more um in the in the draft to make it happen that really goes to show how much they truly want at this pick so it’s a it’s a home run for them homes run a home a homes run we’ll probably be hearing that a lot what what are your initial thoughts have you as you ruminate on this sure so when you talk about polish you think of the RightWay potential impact at backup center where Denver has seemed comfortable going smaller so if you’re looking at his measurements and thinking well that doesn’t quite look like a center consider that they’ve tried vaco and Zeke Etc so right now as far as adding a young guy which a lot of people are resistant to well if you look at him as a backup center there’s room for him to play right away in theory down the line you mention upside now upside is unappealing to me for a yic backup except down the line is homes the yic backup right right away he could be perhaps Down the Line This is a power forward in the pipeline um a guy that could maybe play next to yic if he develops and that upside pans out you see defensive versatility you see three-point shooting so in the here and now I think you’ve got a potential backup center option and again let’s be honest low bar to clear there down the line maybe you could look at this guy as a power forward and that’s where the upside that’s where the play next to yage kind of stuff comes into play it’s very very easy to describe these guys off their strengths only when you’re excited about the pick we got to see how it pans out but you can see the immediate fit you can see the down the line thinking and I think that’s a really good outcome coming out of this draft I think he’s a Denver guy I I this is one of the things that excites me about him I think he fits the culture and what do I mean by the culture here I think he’s an unselfish player a lot of guys coming in it’s like oh they got to prove themselves where am I going to be I’ve been working on my three have you guys seen I’ve got this new post took or whatever he’s a guy that I think his skills are team skills by and large and that’s part of what excites me but also two-way player to me and you talked about we asked this earlier are you more excited about the offense or the defense I understand why would be offense cuz there’s a really lot of off there I’m excited about his defense too though yeah and for me it’s almost 50/50 I’m excited about both aspects of him um I think he’s going to fit in I think he does some things defensively he blocks shots he’s an athlete he he did block shots will we block him at the NBA level we mentioned his size he’s not the biggest guy but like pton Watson I think that Denver needs athletes guys that cover SP space cover ground he’s another one of those guys doing it from a different position and doing it differently than pton Watson but Denver lacked that I just thought it was so clear watching the playoffs and some of this was that their athletes Aaron Gordon was worn down Jamal Murray can be an athlete times was worn down pton wasn’t even playing so some of this was artificially depressed but nonetheless you watch the playoffs and you go you know Dallas had a lot of really athletic guys Boston has some really athletic guys Denver Minnesota had a lot of really athletic guys I think Denver had a lack of that they got one and specifically a guy with functional athleticism and ways that they needed yeah and you know to that he’s a two-way player I spoke about his offense I’m really excited about that but like you just said his defense it’s not like it’s a minus you know it’s not like he’s a bad Defender and he’s a one-way player he’s a two-way guy just a really solid all-around player and another thing I love about his skill set is that the Nuggets really haven’t had a guy like him in the last few years and I’m talking about like a really skilled and and versatile backup big men you can go back to DeMarcus Cousins that was kind of a one-off scenario I don’t know if you can really count him but other than that their big men have been pretty one-dimensional behind joic behind whoever’s playing that power forward yeah the last couple years and so I’m just excited for a lot of skill and some more pop from that spot on the dep chart I like that you’re not getting a blank a blank canvas but you’re getting an offensive like talented player that you get to add those pieces too so you know you’re being going behind nikic you get to learn the passing and the vision and just trying to see like run plays um through them but also you see a guy that can step out and shoot the three um gets to break guys down off the dribble and then finish it around the rim um and then also he gets to be a versatile guy it’s not only behind Nicola yic he gets to play behind Aaron Gordon he’s going to stop um and pop as a power forward as well and that’s probably what a most when it comes to the size um I mean he measured at like 68 69 um without shoes so that’s a power forward in this league that can play um other you know positions as well so the versatility offensively and defensively like I think that that makes his Silling that much higher yeah what one other thing I’ve really liked is he’s described as a good screener and I mentioned it on the live show that’s a that’s an unselfish thing this is what I mean he does that stuff and one of the very specific kind of nich skill sets that I mean Denver could use it man you know the Zeke screens did nothing uh when they even connected so a guy that can screen potentially roll potentially pop out again we use the word potential a lot for a late first rounder we are talking about high-end outcomes but you talk yourself into the fit into into what’s possible and I think there is a chance he can provide something they haven’t had like for example a guy who sets a worthwhile screen for whoever the point guard is with that second unit I’m really excited and then look the the thing the thing about how he could maybe play multiple positions is important because if you believe in upside what’s the point of it playing behind yic but there might be room for him to kind of transition positions as his career goes along maybe he’s a a Gordon option or replacement in the future for now I think you look at him as a guy you can be more hopeful than uh Zeke Naji for example Cal had interesting things to say about him in his media availability one of the things he said and I love I’ve always said Cal has like such an interesting like perspective I really enjoy talking Hoops with him one of the things he says as a skill he catches the ball in tight spaces really well love man that sounds like a welcome relief but it is a welcome relief especially like we talk about Zeke or that was an identified needi but I also just love that it’s such a specific detail he catches in tight spaces well but you know what who throws passes in tight spaces yoke he get the little like catch draw the double fit the ball between two Defenders and you have to catch so I kind of like that as a note yeah I do too um I feel like we’re going to learn so much more about this guy you know in in the coming days and stuff and I just did learn his nickname is Deuce so put that in your uh in your roll ofex Don Holmes the second um I love that little detail and um I think this is going to be a guy Nicole yic likes to play with I do too um because I keep going back to he’s just really skilled and can do a lot of different things and just knows how to play the game Don Holmes is a smart player High basketball IQ that’s maybe the first thing you need to be good at to share the floor and be effective with Nicole yic I feel like they can play together I feel like they can play a part obviously and um again like there’s nothing I feel like that you can knock this pick for at least I haven’t heard it yet yeah I think that he answers the call and I mean I know that we keep alluding to like his fit next to um Nicola joic his fit next to Aaron Gordon and things like that but also I think that that what that’s what separates him from other guys that are not NBA ready or just ready right now is what does this fit with that second unit um can he run the second unit and be a guy that they go through where you’re not you know relying on Jamal Murray the entire time but like what does that look like if he’s a good you know pick and pop type of guy he’s going to be with Jamal Murray as a stagger unit um if Jamal’s not out there you you bring in a picket you bring in a Reggie Jackson you bring in a a St you’re going to need some offense and like quick offense now you have another guy that you get to run the offense through that is similar to Nicola yic a big man that that you can run it through that that that has that continuity that can space the floor um so I think that he he answers the off I mean the the starters and like playing alongside those guys as well as the backup unit so I I really think that that goes a long way and why you draft a guy like that here’s another thing about him that I think is a trait that’s actually important the longer you cover the draft he improves yeah one of the things I’ve heard about him again from some of the Nuggets people is high on him early on his freshman year was high on him he shows up in some of the advanced metrics you like some of the skill but he’s mostly like a Run and Jump guy run jump and dunk and every year he added a little bit more okay now he’s catching on the short roll he’s reading the CT a little bit better he’s making a little bit better reads this last year the three-point shot comes together for him and this might sound silly but there are a lot of players that are run and dunk guys that in year 2 become better run and dunk guys and then in year three they’re just dominant run and dunk guys and you’re like okay well he just kind of got better at what he did the fact that he added pieces to this game to me and built on top of it it’s like yeah that’s the type of when we talk about smart unselfish it’s like yeah that’s how that’s how you grow as a player yeah and um you know we’ve also heard that he wanted to be in Denver too and like the Nuggets wanted him he was clearly the their top guy but he also wanted to be on the nuggets and you know he was asked at the combine last month the draft combine in Chicago who he models his game after who he looks up to in the league and he mentioned four players two of them were nuggets Aaron Gordon and Nicole yic um this is definitely where he wanted to be and it just like it seems like a great match yeah you know on paper and then you watch the film and you know every other detail that rolls in um it was the clear spot for him so that’s the overarching view let’s take a break on the other side we’re going to talk about a couple things the three-point shot he shot really well this year does he need to be a three-point shooter to make it in the NBA how important is that we’re going to talk about the Nuggets telegraphing it everybody on Earth knew that they were going to take Dron Holmes is that a bad thing yeah or does it tell you something about something else about it could be a good thing later on we’re going to talk about the summer league roster is Michael Malone going to trust him and actually play him all of that in today’s show and also some interesting quotes from Calvin Booth about ACP going to talk about some of other stuff here but first shot 38.6% uh from three last year took 83 four times more than what he took the previous year only 19 clearly a thing he added to his game and I think it’s part of what opened him up and made him you know a guy that was so appealing but how much does it depend we get this so many time when we were going through the draft and prep there were so many players where you looked at it and were like shot really well from three this year but didn’t in his previous two like he’s one of those guys so how important Dev when you look at him how important do you think it is for him to be a three-point shooter I think it’s it’s huge and also like they clearly thought it was huge and it was something that he worked on his game for um you talked about that being like one of the key components is him getting better he knew that this was a hole in his game that he haded to to get better at and he he took the time to increase his three-point shooting um he got more confident as a three-point shooter and as opening up in his game and I mean now he’s drafted in the NBA who knows that that you know where he gets drafted if he doesn’t add that that part of his game um but just being a stretch big just being a guy that especially in a offense like you know the Nuggets that have pick and pop type of uh big men that have that continuity that do allow you to shoot the ball and and it’d be okay that just adds a different component to his game that that guys are going to have to you know pick up one so I think that adding a three-point shot to his Arsenal that’s going to be able to keep him on the floor especially if he’s able to to play defense along with it well also if you’re a big man in today’s NBA and you’re not like the super athletic shop blocking Center and like Holmes has a little shop blocking he’s he’s just not tall enough to be what you’re talking about he’s not your um Clint capella right you know he’s not your uh Brook Lopez at The Rim he’s not your classic rim protector if you’re not that guy you need to shoot the three and especially if you’re going to play power forward at all right you really need to shoot the three as a big man or else you’re just going to be like Jackson Hayes um so it’s almost a requirement these days if you’re not the Super rim protector to be this versatile offensive player at the four and you know that’s what he is he can do a little bit of everything on the offensive end yeah I mean typically not always the case but in the in the league as it is today if you’re a small ball back up five it’s because you can help spread the floor a little bit yeah usually you do want to shoot um as far as Booth looking at him as a power forward which again I do think is more of a Down the Line kind of Outlook than just how he fits in right now right away because the easiest way to get them on the floor is an undersiz five but in either scenario you want to be able to shoot the three so I look maybe essential is a bit of a stretch but I think it’s his easiest bet to if he shows he can do that on top of what we think are already NBA ready skill sets it’s got a future in the league uh it’s important to shoot the three if you’re supposed to stretch the floor at all and uh I think he can and it’s important for him I think it’s like Zeke if Zeke was shooting 40% from three with everything else that he did we’d probably all look at him a little bit different it’d be like okay there’s at least a skill set there or what have you so I think it is pretty important for him that being said I like his skill set outside of that as well I do like the other stuff that he does and then the question becomes you know Calvin Booth one of the other things he said was I think he’s a power forward yeah which part of me rolls my eyes cuz we just went through this with Zeke he’s a power forward he’s a center actually power forward consult with the coach of this team before the press conference but I will agree with him I mean we’ve said this all along I think he’s both but I would say he’s versatile there and that’s why I like him I actually do think he is going to play alongside nikic yeah meaningful minutes in part because I think Denver has to change up their rotation this year they can’t keep doing what they’ve been doing right but I think that he has the skill set to do it it’s one it’s probably reason number one I was excited about him as a prospect yeah and then Aaron Gordon can play backup five if that’s what you want which would be great maybe yeah during the regulation would be great I mean obviously you want to you want to be careful with that but it does allow for for a guy to plug in there you you look at his measurements he’s a tiny bit smaller than Zeke Nai just for comparison sake um but I think he might have a longer wingspan potentially then who Zeke Nagi oh I should look this up it doesn’t just off the cuff zek doesn’t seem like he has a huge wing span it’s so funny how these guys look massive in college Zeke too by the way in the highlights and he was a great rebounder in college he gets to the next level and you’re like did you lose four inches what happened right shockingly Z naagi inch and a half longer Wings span okay that is shocking um who would have guessed but yeah you can definitely see Holmes playing both positions I feel like he’s a great fit next to Nicole yic because he’s a smart high IQ player who’s going to know how to play off of him and also I feel like yoke is going to like having you know a guy like him that he could kind of just dump the ball into yeah you know you can’t dump the ball into Aaron Gordon like that if yok share on the floor there you couldn’t dum dump the ball into uh Zeke naag or pton Watson or whoever was playing you know that backup center backup power forward spot last year Don Holmes you can run some stuff through you can run stuff through him in the post you can give him post-ups here and there you can give him pick and Pops what you were saying about Zeke was interesting because you said yeah maybe we’d look at him different if he was shooting and making a lot of Threes zagi just never really had chances to take threes because I don’t think the Nuggets really ever trusted him to take those and they never wanted to put him in position to take those I think they’ll look at donon Holmes and say we actually want to put him in position to shoot some of those shots that we didn’t let Zeke shoot I am excited to see um where Don Holmes wants to play but the fact that Calvin boof came out and said that he’s the four I think that that goes a long way um unless you’re going to play him at the five because I mean right now he’s saying that that’s his position and we know that Denver has a history of playing guys out of their position um so if donon Holmes comes out and says I’m the four I think that that’s going to be like great I think that that goes a long way because he’s not playing out of position he’s not having to defend out of position if he says I could step out and play the five that means he’s a little bit more comfortable um being able to adjust um so I yeah I really want to see that um because right now you want to play him where he feels comfortable especially as a as a early guy I mean a young guy I would not rule out though I just think there are two different things Booth saying I see him as a power forward and how he’s used right away with what the holes are I just would not rule out him being a backup smaller five right off the bat well another funny thing about so we were talking about the wingspan first of all his standing reaches higher than zek’s by 3 in is but his wingspan is shorter by an inch and a half so go figure I always find that a little bit funny probably some uh some inconsistencies in the measurements you think that’s what at the draft combine I don’t know man the official measurement you think they’re just guessing I feel like it’s not an exact science no I’m telling you some guys have a higher standing reach you know it is true and some guys have a wider shoulders what have you you know and then there’s Desmond Bane who wants you to take your reach discourse and shut it up have you seen the the European combine no they do like a combine that’s like the draft combine here but for all the prospects in Europe I don’t believe any of those measurements smoke the cigarette the fastest those look a little sketchy if you see video um anyways here’s the other thing I like him as an addition to this team so if you just look at now your bench players and you’ve got you know a picket who I still like and by the way I think this is good for Picket oh yeah a guy that can pop a guy that can roll a guy that just give like pick it his best when he has a guy to kind of work with and then get into the paint so this helps as oppos to say a zek Naji so I think that this this that helps there but you got Christian Brown you got pton Watson you got Julian St now you got Darren Holmes one nice thing about it no overlap there that’s five guys that all play a different position and in theory could share the court together although I hope they never do other than maybe summer league I hope that’s that’s not the plan but nonetheless it does give you a full stable of Replacements in theory if all these guys can play including strawther it gives you a full uh stable of Replacements and I like that you have athleticism you have defense you have some space that to me is part of like sometimes you have to give a GM a couple years to kind of really see what what the vision is he’s drafted enough players now that we see every position and it’s like all right I kind of get a sense of what at least whether he’s right or wrong I get what a sense of what he values well that look man drafting another young guy who had to wait behind someone else would have infuriated everyone and I don’t that is not what they did here whether you see him as a four or five there’s more room for him to come in and play than maybe another Wing or whatever so you I mean I I I I like it man I really do I didn’t there wasn’t a ton that was going to get me excited tonight but this was on the short list of I can talk myself into it pretty easily yeah um will Malone play him this is one of the big questions Zeke nji as rookie season played 397 minutes following up he played 698 after that 728 this last year 576 never got over 728 minutes which is pretty low for anybody does he seem like the guy Michael Malone will trust I think that it depends on what he buys into if he wants to play backup center a bit more I think that that buys him a bit you know more time but with a pick like this this is for you know small ball lineup with the second unit um you feel comfortable with him he can guard backup bigs he’s not going to I don’t think that you put him out there to guard you know another big um that’s actually like a center but there were Knights that you would go with a DeAndre Jordan or you’ll go with with those type of you know guys so I think that if he’s willing to play both positions then yes but also I think that as a Aaron Gordon replacement so that he can play backup Bas that’s where you buy those minutes so I do think he plays also I’m worried about Aaron Gordon I kind of want him to play fewer minutes next year so hopefully that that allows for some other things so I also think Calvin Booth is going to shape this roster so donon Holmes has to play okay for a couple reasons but largely because he was so enamored with him throughout the whole pre draft process right like this was clearly the guy they identified it was clearly the guy Calvin Booth looked at in the Nuggets range and thought this is the guy we need for both the shortterm and the long term and if you just look at how the rest of the roster might fill out DeAndre Jordan may be back at Center we know what he can give you not much Payton Watson probably like the next tallest guy on the roster I would think at 6’8 6’9 there there’s not really another backup for that you can even go to other than vaco choncha you know we’ll see what happens there so I think and I predict just with how much Calvin Boo likes this guy and based on what happened last year with some guys Jaylen picket not playing at all and we know calv Booth was not happy about that I think he’ll shape this roster in a away where Don Holmes has a parting of the Red Sea Road to the rotation and to be clear that’s not signing like a center to a minimum deal is that what you mean or well you could get a DeAndre Jordan but right DeAndre Jordan even Michael Malone’s not going to play him every night but don’t give a guy don’t give Malone a guy he might play over homes is the idea yeah don’t give him a TI um I maybe just keep an eye on it just keep an eye on it um Michael Calvin Booth actually referenced that so he was asked it by somebody I don’t know I apologize but I don’t know which reporter was asked about hey does Malong actually play this guy that’s one of the questions and his quote was interesting because he referenced I think as an organization we’re all starting to realize the importance of that something that I don’t want I’m I’m paraphrasing here but I think we’re all starting to realize the reality of the new collective bargaining agreement and how important it is to play these guys so I think that that fear is behind us and these guys will play I actually think that’s an interesting the that that phrasing or how he framed it was actually more interesting than the answer itself he can say we all it’s about him understanding that it’s about Michael Malone oh I mean I’m saying it’s about Calvin Booth needs to we could know that other people in the Nuggets or could know that Calvin Booth it’s just part of the equation it’s part of the politics of being a GM is your vision is inherently in congruent with the head coaches right or at least prone to being and and so yeah I mean that’s if you’re this eager on homes and this eager to see him play to the point where you trade up and you told everyone for two months at risk of having to pay extra to pay up you then you don’t want to put put an obstacle between him and what you think he can contribute so this is I I’ve used this example a hundred times for like Tim moving on from Tory Craig that’s what it took to get Malone to play Michael Porter Jr right that’s part of so Calvin has to think this way lastly before we get out of this segment so last year Zeke Naji played 576 minutes Justin holiday played 862 Payton Watson played 1488 so rounding up 6850 1500 that’s a reference point Julian Strather by the way 550 as well so Dev how many minutes does he have to play next year for you to consider it a success like okay that was that was worth it as a rookie as a rookie I say about like 800 900 so about what holiday played this year that’s healthy I think that’s right I I yeah and I think that that’s like a um break glass in case of emergency but also like a feel for it because holiday wasn’t playing like that early on like it just kind of was at random times and then it was a a feel like it wasn’t like holiday only played because a guy got injured it was like no I want to play him a few minutes to see how he looks or to see what he has improved on or how he fits with the team so I think more of that but then that also that goes to like I think that that shows how much they believe in him because Zeke Nai in his first year he was he was deemed as like that was a good year for him as a rookie if he played that much like that many minutes we would have said that that was an incredible year for a rookie so if he plays that as a rookie he’s part of the future right I think that’s about right to me about 800 to a thousand yeah that feels about right I mean I’m sure it’ll he stretches throughout the year where he plays more he plays less I don’t think donon Holmes has had a real history of injuries uh so that’s a good thing to have in your back pocket sorry for bringing that up yeah my bad that’s all good um but again I just go back to what the roster is going to look like it’s a way less crowded front Court you know than if you look at what Julian strw had to go through last year to get in the lineup it’s not 800 Devon Reed two years ago played 670 it felt like 6,070 so it’s not that many minutes to say just playing the Davon Reed minutes I think that you should be hoping for it I actually think it happens I think he’s in the 800 to 1,000 I think Denver’s going to prepare for that he’s kind of an almost every night player yeah I think so too and I think we’re going to get a good look at him all right let’s take a break on the other side though summer league roster let’s take a look at that we’re also going to ask did the Nuggets Telegraph this in a way that harmed them what does it tell that what does it tell us that that pick had been known for 3 weeks uh and then later on in the show we’re going to put on some rose-colored glasses no we haven’t done that that here segment three dmvr nuggets podcast if you missed our live stream definitely tune in we’ll Tim stamp it so that you have when the pick happens or when the trade happens but also there’s a nice little intro in there we do every year that I think you might enjoy so good so good this year um let’s talk real quickly about the kcp actually before we get to the kcp part of this this was a pick the number one pick that people knew going into it was Denver Nuggets had promised Dar uh Daron Holmes Calvin boo denied that so part of you goes Calvin boo you know had the conversation with uh Kevin oconor early on and then it gets published and was it on record off record and there was a thing of all right Cal let one slip you know it felt like that Cal let one slip publicly to somebody and the story got out then this one comes out and it’s like three weeks before the draft and there’s one pick everybody knows and it’s Denver but there’s a flip side to this Calvin Booth clearly believes in what he believes yeah and doesn’t waver double-edged sword cuz the the other side of that sword is the stubbornness maybe you’re just you you only think this or that but one part of it is he has a vision and he believes in it very strongly and he knew three weeks ago this is what he wanted to do knew exactly where he had to trade up get to 22 to get him got him so which way do you actually I’m going start over here which way do you look at this I mean I I think it probably objectively hurt them in the form of a an additional second round pick or two but that from this perspective yeah I’m not worried about Denver’s future seconds I’m not in the front office from this perspective the easy way to look at it is that they had a ton of conviction in this pick maybe Holmes makes it to 28 probably not other guys we could draft they were not interested in that path they told everyone in their mother they were taking a guy they took so look did it maybe make it easier for Phoenix to to hey we’re going to take this guy we’re going to take this guy yeah sure but to me it instills some confidence in the pick or at least that it it wasn’t a backup plan it wasn’t a backup plan Calvin booth and Company wanted this guy to the point that they were willing to move up and to me there’s something I think validating about that or or encouraging is the word I’m looking for in some ways you could say this is the opposite of the Tyler Leiden pick where they were like we can do it we can thread the needle it’s going to happen oh crap we waited too long C was like I’m not going to let that happen we’re moving up I know we’ll get him at 22 yeah for sure and I had heard that the Knicks were very interested in holes at um they had two picks right before the Nuggets yeah and like they might be Losing Isaiah hartenstein in for agency so they definitely need a big man I heard the the Bucks too at 23 the Bucks and then there was also some chatter that the Timberwolves and Tim connley might have taken a chance on Don that chatter comes from one Calvin Booth but by and by the way when we say that heard the Knicks and heard the Bucks not from a nugget Source like from a Draft Source so that that’s not like the Nuggets trying to cover themselves or something that was outside Denver right but I love that he traded up to go get his guy um I love that he was aggressive and I love that he knew who he wanted and he just went and got him um I feel like that’s kind of what you have to do especially in a draft like this that’s a weak draft that’s a bad draft it was kind of mystifying throughout the whole pre-draft process that Holmes kept getting mocked to Denver because I didn’t think there was any way a guy as good as him and as skilled and as polished would last until 28 I guess now we know it was more of a mock just because that’s who Denver was going to get one way or another probably um but he went go Guy and um if you’re just if you’re looking at a GM of your favorite team like you would rather they’re aggressive aggressive and go with conviction than just kind of letting the cards fall how they make yeah but also like this like I don’t know if it’s a credit to you know Calvin Bo or just him just showing that he has a gauge on what it looked like around the league because he it it it got mocked like multiple times and then also was weeks ago where it’s like hey I know that I’m going to get him so I can throw it out there and I dare you guys to go get him um we knew that he he wasn’t a top 20 pick he was never mocked like around there so he kind of had an understanding of the Suns kind of are going to give us what so maybe he had that conversation with them 3 weeks ago as well as hey I can help you guys out you guys can help me out you know scratch my back I’ll scratch yours um and also this is this is Calvin boof’s mm Mo um he he he goes after what he wants this is not the first time we saw pton Watson no one thought that he was going to go where he went he went up and got him um no one thought Hunter Tyson was you know right there he went up and got him because he’s like I know what I want I’m going to just make that happen and we’ll figure the rest out so um I mean you got to give him Kudos if if if he goes out of his way to say that this is a guy that I want he’s going to go all in for him and you know right now we can’t say anything but like if it works out good for him and that’s the type of GM that you want if not then then you can start having those questions I think though that it probably is fair to say though that a couple things have gotten out you know under the cow regime so far that that maybe don’t typically get out and one of those today by the way some of this is like there’s a lot of skills you need to be a good GM and no GM has all of them there’s guys that are really good at Intel there’s guys that are really good at scouting there’s guys that are really good at relationships what have you not no not no JM has all of them I think that the kcp part informs what of Cal’s just modest operis and that is he’s pretty Direct in what he says and doesn’t like it doesn’t disguise a lot so kcp obviously May is a guy the one starter who’s now up unrestricted free agent Cal had some interesting things to say about him as well yeah he pretty much said that he’s gone I mean when you say pretty much say we can go through the quote but he pretty much said that Christian Brown is going to start and kcp is not coming back next year I mean am am I sugar am I wrong at all what what he said was that you know if you look at the historically good teams prepare themselves to sort of lose fourth and fifth starters yeah and feel like they have plug-and-play guys and he referenced Christian Brown and by the way he’s kind of right about this it doesn’t mean the circumstance that we’re talking about right now is the right way but he is right that this happens all the time with including teams that have repeated and repeated there’s been guys that are different in between those I would definitely have preferred to hear like no we really think he’s coming back we’re not worried about it even if it’s just lip service I would have preferred to hear it because I do think the kcp conversation’s kind of interesting because there are some detractors who are going to rightfully point out like how good was he really in the postseason this past year who kcp not great but yeah tough matchups but tough I strongly agree the other side of this is tough matchups does some things checks some boxes that no one else on this roster does and to me I just don’t see any world in which he moves on and then it gets our better in the next year so I I’m not going to rule it out I also know Calvin is a guy who is uh very prepared for backup plans right so part of this is just the due diligence on if he leaves we’re not going to panic we know what we would do not the most encouraging quote of all time though do you do you agree is this pretty discouraging to you Dev no not not so much like really I I really do I think that um like when it comes to Casey he can’t make that decision for him and also like he he’s showing us the other side of the curtain of we’ve had conversations but also if it doesn’t work out he’s preparing everybody to like let’s move on and you have a guy and you need to back your guy Christian Brown so I think that is like basically insurance for if it goes either way um cuz if it works out then everybody’s going to be happy was great if it doesn’t work out what are you going to say the sky is falling he can’t be in that he’s the GM of the Nugget so he has to he has to prepare everybody for like things are okay we have a plan um for if this doesn’t work out so I think that that’s smart you talked about um Hunter versus hunted you don’t love it God we have a new one plug and play was brought up both with uh donon Holmes and how he could be plug and play on this team but also in was brought up about trading kcp we got guys that can plug and play in the spots I was Booth believes that every guy he’s drafted can play next to yic and everything will be fine that is he wrong I mean maybe maybe not maybe not though maybe not maybe but maybe not I will say I am also here’s the tough part about the NBA I mean there’s a million tough things tough things but do the Nuggets need kcp at next year I think yes I think there’s no question could you make a case that they don’t need him two years from now you could make that case three years from now probably can make that case unfortunately it’s not how it works how it works he’s got to make a decision and go with it and if and if you needed him this year and didn’t get him two years from now might not happen everything y just 28 uh 29 29 be 29 season yeah the next two years are kind of the most important ones so for everything I just said about how you could make an argument that kcp is not worth whatever will get Denver is not going to get better if he walks away I think they could get better maybe not better but I think it could be good for them in one way and it’s going to force them to play a little differently yeah it’s going to force them to shift around some things on the offensive end of the floor it’s going to force them I think to move more towards rotations and substitution patterns that most teams deploy because if they did run it back I really think it’ just be probably more the same next year and again that’s a great thing you blew a 20-point lead in game seven of the second round like you were there um but I do think with Christian Brown Starting it’s going to force the nuggets and Michael Malone to rethink some things so are they worse without kcp of course of course they’re worse can they still win a championship yes absolutely they can still win a championship with Christian Brown starting at the two guard booth is owning it too like part of this quote part of what it is is like there is a part of this that could be just the reality of the situation we go into the second apron we can only all this stuff right but there’s another part of this that the quote comes off as sort of a this is what happens we can do this and that ties Booth to this like if if kcp is not back this no longer is a like Bruce last year which was more literal there’s nothing Denver could do about it to more Booth this is what he believed that they would this would not come back to haunt him and if it does then it’s a thing that he kind of owns as well I think and here’s something else I think Calvin booth and the Nuggets saw this happening this time last year I think they expected kcp to leave you know when they were doing their post-draft press conference last year and that’s why they drafted three NBA ready guys and that’s why I think in his mind the idea was to play those guys and bolster the bench and get Christian Brown up to speed to potentially step in this year so I think this was kind of a a multi-year plan on his part but it didn’t happen and now he and now it sounds like at least from this quote it sure sounds like he does not holding out hope that Casey it sounds more to me of a guy that’s like I know how this is going to play out and what’s so interesting is that you look at the teams with cap space and that are real threats for kcp Philly seems like they’re number one and after that you got Orlando and like maybe they’re only looking to offer guys a short-term deal it’s almost like they’re viewing the second apron as like we’re just not going to go there and it’s not worth it to go there like we can pay him the Nuggets can match they can pay kcb whatever they want they can exceed any offer that he gets but it’s like they’re saying it’s not worth it to do that for kcp that’s how I’m reading it but that I kind of hate and it’s not in a vacuum yes like kcp is going to get overpaid here one way or another yeah but I just I don’t like Denver’s Denver’s starting five I think would be worse immediately and and I think you made strong points about what it could open up you know one that’s similar to this is Jeremy Grant and the Jeremy Grant thing happened and there was a like you know we did everything we could like this was a you know that was the whether it was true or not there was the the message of like this is not what we wanted but unfortunately it’s what Jeremy wanted and it was this almost is like that’s what we want feels a little bit more but also the quote is coming from the GM it’s not coming from Kony like if KY said it then that that goes it’s him opening his pocket it’s him having you know that conversation so I think that until he says it you kind of have to go with it like yeah Calvin bu can can go on and say like I’ve had conversations and maybe that is what CR is saying is like yeah we’re not going there but I mean I do think that he’s they’re on the side of maybe he’s not coming back so let’s prepare for what that looks like right right all right this was a little bit of a downer segment but rightfully so let’s take a break on the other side we’re going to put on some rose-colored glasses talk about why the future might be bright for the nuggets and including their summer league team just got a lot more interesting that’s one that’s one silver lighting rose-colored glasses or booze booze colored glasses boo colored glasses hey no man I like summer league to be entertaining one of your few drinks in it is it is Miller Light it is Miller time here on the dmvr they’re are good friends and we want them to stay there you go final segment here and it is time to introduce a new segment for you guys it’s time to put on some rose-colored glasses and explain why the future is bright in Denver presented by Shady Ray jokes on you we debuted this segment in round two of the playoffs last year ooh true we did we did that yeah was it one and done we didn’t bring it back D why did you lower the Vibes like that nobody REM head to Shady r.com and use code dnvr shut up Bo we’re Shady we’re doing rosecolor glasses here not Negative Nancy uh Shady ra.com use code dmvr you get 35% off polarized sunglasses they do have some great sunglasses I own I don’t know 12 pairs yeah why is the future bright for the Nuggets fellas why is the future bright now that they have they run hes Dev start us off I think the future is brightest because they they got a better piece that makes them better without having to give up too much like those future seconds like okay but they they filled a hole that they desperately needed to fill and there’s more rotation like there’s more guys that you could go throw in there there’s going to be less wear and tear and I think that that’s what ultimately got them um in the second round of the playoffs just playing guys too long throughout the regular season throughout the playoff push um and now you add another guy that’s NBA ready right now and they didn’t have that from their rookies last year they didn’t have that from their young guys when VL go got hurt that took away from that Zeke Naji was not ready so those are minutes that they anticipated on on being able to fill that was not there now they have a young guy that I think that they can fill and then hopefully one of those other guys like come along with it so um I just think that um Insurance that’s why they’re better all right insurance project Dynasty’s back on we’re back let’s go we are let’s go project Dynasty this is what I was looking for some optimism care how real it is we’re present we’re back newest member of project Dynasty I’d like to welcome in Don Holmes wow project Dynasty in a position of need okay didn’t have anybody in the front Court in Project Dynasty yet but now we have Don Holmes all all right we’re back on we’re back on bab Spurs never won backtack Championship bike I don’t know if you knew that that’s right I’ve heard that actually heard that as well car when what context did it come up it doesn’t matter yeah look the Nuggets needed a backup big you him as a four or five he is a backup big one way or another uh with some versatility and some upside man and I don’t think anyone wanted to see another young guy that wasn’t going to play you got a young guy that might very well play and to me that feels like a win and so you go forward with some clear priorities bring kcp back if possible upgrade the point guard position and again man when you lose like the Nugget did the Gap feels so wide yeah the Gap is not that wide they blew a 20-point lead in game seven they were that close to being the first team in six years to make it back to the Western Conference Finals any Conference Finals since winning the finals I don’t think they’re that far away and I don’t think it hurts to add a quality player through the draft with room to play in your rotation right away let’s look at this as a win fellas because I think you know until he plays and either looks good or doesn’t all we can do is guess yeah I’m guessing this was a positive move I think the future is bright cuz we needed a pallet cleanser man I’m telling you this is the weirdest thing there have been more brutal nuggets losses in history yeah Western Conference finals against the Lakers in 2020 Western Conference finals against the Lakers in 209 uh there have been a number of years that have gone up game 82 maybe you could even argue was was tougher this one lingered longer I think than any of them and one of the things like they okay so the Celtics win season ends whatever and it’s like we’re turning a page we’re turning a page flush the last year it down Daron Holmes was the guy the fan base wanted the guy the Nuggets wanted you needed a win I just feel like we hadn’t had a win in I don’t know two months through two and a half months it feel like nuggets F base had had a win tonight was a win I’ll be at a small one cuz it’s the draft and but you got your guy and I just feel like there’s something like the KP part of this or whatever we kind of again that like Daron holes we kind of knew that kcp wasn’t coming back I think that was another thing we know that well we don’t know it I’m saying well same with the Ron homes like we didn’t know it but we kind of thought you know whatever so I think that there’s something similar here we needed a win we got it and it feels like a reset and I’m going to give you one more guys before we get out of here I’m kind of excited about the subber leag team man it’s that time the Year this is we do this we do it every year but this is the worst year a lot different this one this is different here’s the here’s the difference they could have gotten a guy they could have gotten a coral Le they could have gotten a guy where we like all I don’t know pick in St even Philip palowsky a little bit like is this fun donon holes going to be fun man he dunks he rolls to the rim he’s got a shot he’s Dynamic you got a squad I just I know it’s a small thing but I’m excited for summer league again let’s go baby summer league is going to be incredible there’s a lot of seconde guys that didn’t get to play much in you know in their rookie Seasons they’re going to be a part of that team then you get the your your guy that you just drafted who we really get to see if he’s ready or not like we could say these things until we see him on a basketball court um so like yeah he’s talented and he has that but he has to show it and there’s going to be other guys that are going to be showing it so I’m excited I’m excited to be at cira yeah I mean it’s going to be a big summer league for Holmes because as we’ve been saying our expectation I think the Nuggets expectation is he’s going to play yeah if he looks bad that’s not a great sign yeah you know if he looks good it’s a great sign so there’s there’s not like it’s not life or death like there’s not that riding on the summer league for Holmes but I think it’s going to be very important for him to look good and get some momentum heading into you know a training camp where he’s going to have to win a spot yeah I think summer leak will be very exciting for about six quarters yeah about right and then we’ll probably tap out yeah it’s about right right that’s all the time you know I’m going to give I’m going to give around the time where Jaylen picket backs down his man for the 15th time and only in the second quarter just just because we have to podcast with Adam I know we’re supposed to root for the Nuggets I hope Jaylen picket doesn’t doesn’t play well in Vegas Seas is I just hope he doesn’t wear a white uniform all right hit that outro music let’s get to these let’s get to these super chats that was I can’t believe I understood that reference what else do we have that was horrible we got that was shitty dude Patriot Tex he only works if Malone actually plays him he doesn’t like to play young players in clutch times hopefully Malone gets he’s option number two on the summer league God damn it please get us out of here kale I mean look Patriot I think at this point there’s not a lot of other options at the position barring any other signings Cooper flag in Utah man it would suck to have all the divisions be good I guess you know what once this air is over just we might as well die we might as well just die the worst death a smooth transition from kcp leaves I think they’re going to get a two guard yeah who’s I’m not going to say who but I think they will do you have an idea of who you think really I can we go back to that one really quickly because I just didn’t actually read it uh James Davis I’m convinced Utah will tank for Cooper flag if kcp is gone we should call about Clarkson makes only 14 mil and gives pop off the bench he’s a high commodity man yeah I think he’ll be in demand too astray I hate that this day ended average for us Vibes were raised to the max with drafting homes then completely suck with the K it’s an accurate description of how the KN went love the giant closing us out by saying drron Holmes reminds me of Al Horford baby he does by the way Cal compared him to it to the shot that’s what it reminds you of of extremely in because as a Celtics hater Al Horford hits every [ __ ] shot project Dynasty is officially back let’s go baby bike we are so back all right we’ve been live for 9 hours straight guys we appreciate all the real ones who rode with us the dra I will tell you this we always try to give you the real we never trying to sugar coat this or that but it is fora is a sports fan the cynic the alltime cynic just everything’s terrible sky falling no way to live man it’s the draft we don’t know it’s how it’s going to pan out I think there’s some exciting stuff here uh and now with a little break we go into tomorrow where we have round two more trades probably heating up more rumors heating up and then next week free agency so this was Domino number one several more Dominoes on the way thanks for hanging with guys we’ll see you [Music] tomorrow we all sting like the May

I think daron is great I just hope they don’t force him to just play big & just try make him rebound set screens roll & block shots & only keep him in the dunker spot like I feel that’s kinda what they did with naji, I would like 2 see darpn at PF next to jokic let him shoot the 3 let him post up yeh ofcourse he needs to do the big man things aswell but I would like 2 see him at PF next to jokic where he can really focus on his offence

  2. “Project Dynasty” actually just means replacing good, expensive players with worse, cheap ones. Wonder what the reaction will be when AG also leaves after next year. What a sham. Thank god we won the one.

  3. You guy are the best, I feel bad for you, it's so maddening that these guys (front office) is treating Jokic prime like it's another Tuesday…guys in the front office you are all irrelevant, only thing that matters is Jokic, DEN won't likely make play-off for few years and won't be close to a tittle for decades, no matter who you draft or trade or whatever you do. That's the reality of NBA. You had about 10 chances to win the tittle, 1 = Murray ACL, 2 = Murray lazy to comeback, 3 = you won, great job, 4 = Murray lazy to keep fit, 5/6/7/8/9/10 = window closed by the GM?. Only thing matter is to have the best players, if you loose KCP you have 1 MVP, 1 pseudo star, 1 star role player, 1 MPJ and 2-3 bench players. I love CB but he's 6th guy at best. And that just half of it, CB was great in his role…who do you get to play his role now?

  4. I just like to remain everybody to stop comparing DEN to SAN, they drafted 3 MVP caliber players, that's why they were able to win over 15 years span…

  5. But is this another year when we don't get anything big? I mean, we keep losing our shit over rookies, every year, and then they need 3 seasons to show us they are not that good. So, is Denver ever going to bring someone bigger, someone more expensive, everyone is making huge moves, every season, and we are not changing anything big, year after year.

  6. Yeah we started with stages of grief a bit early, I've seen nuggets fans already rationalize loosing KCP with "was he even that good in the playoffs"? Nuggets ain't winning anything with Braun at starting 2, at least not next year, because a) Braun at starting 2 means his backup is.. who exactly? b) he ain't that good

  7. Malone …my god i haven't much believe in him plays different his players this year but hey we will see if he can change his mind…or he stays stubborn 😔

  8. We are asking too many young guys potentially to contribute to a pursuit of a championship. The same thing will happen in the playoffs where AG and Jokic just get ran into the ground. Also, the front office should be ahead of all of us, but why didn’t the front office prioritize preparing for the KCP free agency last year by simply not paying Zeke. We could have paid KCP and avoided the second apron. We have the guys, just get established players.
