EP. 431 – Tristan da Silva – Orlando Magic Podcast

this is the sixthman show an Orlando Magic podcast with your hosts Luke Sylvia and Jonathan Osborne covering all things Magic Basketball by fans for fans go [Music] magic what’s going on Orlando Magic fans you guys are back with the six man show today is June 27th 2024 Jonathan Osborne here as always joined by my co-host Luke Sylvia Luke the magic have made the 18th pick in the draft Tristan D Silva out of Colorado how are we doing a little surprising um just because of the age and spoke a lot about it on the last episode about there’s only so many minutes to go around so I begin to wonder what what you’re going to do with the 23-year-old who is ready in in a lot of aspects or as ready they’re going to get so I have no idea what they’re going to do with him yeah I think we’ll we’ll definitely get into the details like in terms of is he going to see time in the G league is he going to be you know in the you know the rotation from day one and and what that’s going to look like really where I want to start is is just sort of like the beginning of the draft and the I mean what was it almost two-hour buildup to our pick with uh Zachary rease going number one to the Atlanta Hawks and then and so on and so forth there was a little bit I don’t want to say drama but with Dalton connect who was slotted in The Lottery by most you know draft experts and you know Prospect pundits and so forth he started slipping and he was there at 17 goes to the Lakers eventually but uh yeah I mean Dalton connect is a guy that I remember earlier in the you know college season that was a guy that had some you know top five top 10 Buzz a guy that a lot of magic fans were talking about earlier in the year that hey if the magic can find a way to get this guy it would be awesome and then he just keeps sliding and sliding and slid and makes it past the heat makes it past the 76ers sitting there you know at 17 the Lakers ended up taking that pick Luke but U just what was your take on the way that the draft was unfolding and leading up to the magic pick yeah I mean the the real drama like you said was the The Dalton connect stuff like but it was happening and you just felt like uh he’s going to get ripped out from under us and it ended up happening he goes to the Lakers and it’s like oh I mean what should I have expected but I that was really it there was a little bit of Hope about Dalton connect but honestly like when it came to this pick I I I’ve said my expectation about this pick where they probably spend this this upcoming season anyway but I think either connect or D Silva is primed to be a rotation player in the league for a while yeah I think when we started to get through like um you know the Hornets with you know Salan out of out of France obviously re a and and SAR both going you number one and two and then Ron Holland out of the g-league night maybe he goes a little bit earlier than expected Rob Dillingham goes to the the Spurs at 8 he’s being traded to the Timberwolves and then the Grizzlies really one of the the you know earlier surprises of the night going Zack Ed at nine which I exhaled I did not want Zack Edy I just didn’t really see the the fit here and the way that he fits into what the magic tried to do so when he went and then you see Williams at 10 buellis at 11 who I know a lot of bulls fans are really excited about and then Nicola topic goes 12 to the Thunder when Edy wasn’t gone and topic was gone at 12 all of a sudden we were looking at a lot of the guys that magic fans were talking about Devin Carter bub Carrington who went 13 and 14 kle where Jared McCain and you sort of got into that range and you’re like there’s like five picks to go and there’s like seven or eight guys that I’m pretty comfortable with the magic taking here obviously sure if Dalton connect is there at 18 maybe that’s the pick but Tristan D Silva at 18 I I don’t think there’s a really a better fit in the draft for the magic what they like to do when you look at the 68 size the 610 wingspan the positional versatility that he has defensively the high IQ good off the ball isn’t a guy that’s going to have the ball in his hands a ton finishing at The Rim finished 63.5% of his attempts at The Rim this year 4.8 attempts from behind the arc and he shot almost 40% from behind the arc magic fans were asking for shooting you’re getting that interest in D Silva you’re getting a guy that fits into the rest of the culture with the team 23 years old High character guy you know sort of what you’re getting character-wise with him teammate of the German national team Oscar the Silva of Mo and and fron vonner they’re playing with him in the Olympics and played with him in in Euro Basket in the fee World Cup last year so you have some Intel there him being from Colorado Jamal Mosley’s you know uh the school that Jamal Mosley went to a lot of Intel the magic did their due diligence on Tristan D Silva but really seemingly a like perfect fit for the magic but now the question is Luke like sort of where does he fall into the rotation I think is the big question mark right and I alluded to his age and I would love if there’s a way you carve out minutes for him out out of the gate just because a lot of his ability points to what the magic need right now not necessarily what the magic might need in one more year or two more years because who knows what those off Seasons look like and with free agency and all those other things but I think this is a guy that you could talk yourself into slotting for 14 to 15 minutes a game as rookie year but it’s hard to know when there’s so much in the air when it comes to what the magic are going to do with all these contracts in this offseason I I think I will quickly after looking more into Tristan D Silva I think I’ll probably start making a pecking order of like who I already think that he could be better than quickly on this roster and does it become a viable argument that he should get minutes this upcoming season summer league will be fun we won’t overreact but it will it will be a lot of fun to see what he’s able to do in uh in that in the summer league so we’re recording this just after 11:00 p.m. eastern time I think Tristan D Silva’s media availability media availability with the Orlando uh media is just now wrapping up so we don’t really have a lot of quotes to go over from that we’ll cover most of that you know in the the next episode that we do uh but we have got confirmation obviously Tristan D Silva is going to play in g-league or in the summer league excuse me Jed Howard will also be playing in the summer league so that’ll be pretty interesting to see what that that Dynamic looks like for me it it’s pretty obvious that chuma okk’s days in Orlando are are over right is a guy that’s been out of the rotation the last couple of years when he has played just hasn’t looked you know you know where you would expect him to be at this point in his career given you know the you know the draft and the way that he looked you know in in his rookie year and then it comes down to what are the magic going to do in free agency a lot of moving parts today Nicholas Clon that guy you know he’s taken off the board you know other trades ogn and Obi reigning with the New York Knicks even though they just traded for you know miles Bridges a lot happening in the NBA today sort of like drinking through a fire hose in terms of transactions in the NBA today which is typical of a of a draft day um but we’re going to see do the magic hold on to Joe Engles are they trying to free up another $1 11 million in cap space for free agency that’s coming up in a few days here and then we’ll need to see really what happens with free agency before we can really break down I think what is going to happen in this roster it might just come down to Jet Howard versus Tristan D Silva and who knows really what the issue was maybe with jet Howard not cracking the rotation last year not even really getting a chance was it just deficiencies in his game was the defense not quite there was he just not ready or was the plan sort of always for him to play in the G League we’ll probably never know that um but when you look at Tristan D Silva guy that’s a little bit older you know maybe just a little bit more mature just naturally being a few years older can shoot the ball really well just like jet Howard does probably does doesn’t have you know as much off the dribble I think that that Jed has at this point but maybe a little bit further along defensively Luke so it’s going to be interesting sort of what that Dynamic looks like I I think ultimately that may be what it comes down to is is jet more ready or is Trist and D Silva more ready to step into the rotation and that’s where I start to think about defensively You could argue that D Silva offers more there right for sure that’s where I would be with that is that the Silva does give you an edge defensively he is high IQ now welman and and Jamal Mosley will both tell you that every player if you ask them they have they’re a good decision maker high IQ cuz that’s what they prioritize but like San Vini put out a video I believe where he was like doing a the breakdown with Tristan da Silva and his caption for the video was that Tristan D Silva is the highest IQ player in the NBA draft this year so that’s I mean that’s a great sign for the magic and it makes sense like this this is just you you tweeted this out but this is just a magic pick everything like everything we’ve listed his qualities long positional versatility can play defense and get after on that end and also brings in the need for shooting I I think that maybe right now the plan could be hey the expectation as the Silva plays plays in the G league but it we’ll see how how summer league goes when he’s playing and he’s kind of competing really with jet in those instances and preseason and so at that point in preseason it will be very interesting to see who gets the minutes Edge in preseason after they’ve kind of made their Mark in summer league in which it’ll show us a little bit of the Magic’s hand as much as they don’t want to do that uh it’s it it’s going to be one of my favorite storylines to start the year because I do I just I think Tristan D Silva could brings a lot to the table uh and like you said his maturity being 23 and all those abilities that he’s got it would surprise me if he doesn’t have a fighting chance for minutes want to take a quick break just to give a special shout out to our patrons the folks that you probably know by now help financially support the six man show allow us to do everything that we do each and every episode we give a special shout fans have been talking about Tristan da Silva seemingly for the last couple of months like it sort of like as soon as the college basketball season ended and some magic fans like really shifted into Prospect mode like yeah they’re obviously still day to-day with the Orlando Magic getting ready for the playoffs but we do have a lot of magic fans who are big into college basketball evaluating prospects talking about the draft and Tristan D Silva is a name that I heard like really early on and for obvious reasons you look at the size you look at the the wingspan but you watch the kid play I can’t help but see the shades of fron voder just the way that he you know obviously the very similar size uh the positional versatility I don’t know that he’s quite there where you know fron was coming in defensively but the footwork and the sort of the craftiness around the basket is really obvious with the Silva and can like is it wrong to just say this is a handsome kid like the kid like he’s got it all going for himself 68 NBA player very handsome guy like it’s good to be Tristan to Silva right now yeah I mean good to be a magic fan uh I I agree like with your your comparisons with with the Silva we talked about it you know last episode as well but I I mean I yeah I it’s it’s hard because we there’s so many unknowns that I I I I know that I just need to go ahead and sell myself completely onto Silva because regardless he is an orom magic player and will likely be in the rotation if not this season the next that’s the hope at least you would think with this pick the fact that they kept it tells me everything I need to know that they hope that he is eventually in the lineup in the rotation so um we’ll see not not an incredible athlete and but he doesn’t need the ball he thrives in catch and shoot situations I think he shot like a little over 40% in college from three in catch and shoot situations and like that’s all I need I don’t need you can be hey if you don’t get Klay Thompson this offseason Jonathan Tristan da Silva can be a little bit of a a Klay Thompson in the sense of he’s not going to need the ball but he’s going to get open and when he gets open he’s just going to shoot and let it fly and that’s really all that I want yeah really looking forward to to getting him in or Orlando and and getting him U obviously integrated into the system this year Luke were or throughout his career War number 23 at Colorado can you name the last magic player to wear number 23 Jason Richardson no oh my you forgot about Koby forgot about Mario honia so it’s Mario honia um and then Mario honia changes number to to number eight uh but CJ Willcox in 2017 Vic law in 2020 and then Jordan bone in 2021 War number 23 would expect Tristan D Silva to to wear number 23 yeah for me I think if if it was not for his age which is also 23 by the way um if it was not for his age I would feel pretty confidently that we would see him you know in the G league for the most part this year if for no other reason then you know I I feel like jet how it should be jet Howard’s spot to lose like if there is an open spot in the rot ation especially you know at the shooting guard wi position it should be jet Howard’s to lose just you know given where he was drafted last year drafted higher than Tristan D Silva spent the entire year you know with magic organization spent the year in the g-league uh you know was a good soldier for lack of a better term like never showed like an ounce of bitterness or you know any type of negative energy obviously he wants to be with the main club right but wasn’t and play well in the G league so I would like to think you know just sort of the way that I I think it should work but what do I know that it should be jet Howard’s job to lose the fact that Tristan D Silva is 23 years old does sort of complicate that a little bit because guy’s already 23 you’re going to put him in the G League by the time he’s actually cracking the rotation this year he’s going to be 24 years old and that’s even before we start talking about what guys are coming back we still don’t know is Marquel folz coming back is Gary Harr coming back is Joe Engles coming back if those guys are or are not coming back what does the free agency situation look like at this point it looks like you know a guy like tus Jones Klay Thompson Isaiah hartenstein those are going to be some of the Prime targets for the Orlando Magic especially the way that they are expected to take a step forward right with Dalton connect falling in the draft a lot of people were talking about hey like the magic should trade up because if they don’t trade up it most likely won’t be there at 18 were you going to trade with the Miami Heat there at 16 and inivision rival or or 15 and inivision rival probably not and then you’ve got Philadelphia and you’ve got La there kind of feels weird you know dealing with either of those teams but magic fans are are just calling for this front office to be aggressive and we’re not even a free agency yet and you’re seeing the the Knicks making the move for Bridges they’re reigning ogn anobi the Nets are reigning Nick Claxton the Oklahoma City or a team that uh are you being you know aggressive and as always you know making moves in tonight’s draft to get the the guys that that they’re looking to acquire they’re another team that’s been connected to Isaiah hartenstein so the magic have all of the these resources all of this money going into free agency and Magic fans everywhere are calling for the magic to take a step forward you and I thought maybe the trade deadline was like the the proper time to start pressing on the gas a little bit last season that did not happen this is the time to to make a move it seems like you got the guy that you were probably targeting at 18 in this draft in Tristan D Silva now in the next couple of days we’re still waiting to hear extension news on France varer and Jaylen Suggs but then you know it’s the Open Market on free agency and it’s sort of like I said drying up already in in terms of guys that the magic should or could be targeting and you know in the next 3 four days here we into free agency Luke where like how are you feeling right now just sort of given the other moves that have taken place already first I want to say this there is a lot of talk for magic fans about all the the our front office is so boring they’re they fell asleep they don’t care blah blah blah that’s there’s a ton of that right now and it’s like I get it you you just want the the front office to be aggressive and and for what you feel like would be the first time that they were being aggressive and completely fair but it’s not just because they haven’t made a move doesn’t mean they’re not going to be aggressive in free agency at all that’s does that’s absolutely not what that means also they’re and they always you know they a lot of people are just trying to say like oh it’s the same old Jeff welman it’s like the only Jeff welman you’ve known is rebuilding Jeff welman you have no idea what he’s going to do in free agency how he’s going to operate really from here on out sure he’s not going to just do things to do them he’s going to make sure that they’re pretty perfect but I do think that there is going to be another level that he’s going to kick it into gear of because Jeff welman’s not stupid we’ve seen the way that he navigates we see the way how you know how particular he is I’m just tired of people saying like oh they’re asleep at the wheel cuz you have no idea this is going to be a totally different approach at least it should be obviously if you sit on your hands in free agency and just basically run it back with the same guys it’s like yeah that’s that’s ridiculous and should be frowned upon but that’s not going to happen so that’s where I’m at with that with everything else I’m as we got close to the draft I was like okay I guess the magic are going to keep this pick and that’s fine but with everything in the air hard to know what it even means now as far as everything else Vada came out with some more odds with Klay Thompson Jonathan and The Magik in the ones the plus the plus 100s with the closest team to them being I believe Philly so things are getting interesting when it comes to the odds right now and I don’t know what to think of that I don’t know if I should believe those even though I know Vegas knows something they wouldn’t just throw those out there the magic are plus 135 and which means you’re not getting much of a return if you were to put that bet down you put down like $10 you’d get like 1350 back or 1350 is what you would net right so one plus 135 the Warriors are plus 175 excuse me not the Sixers and then it’s like plus 650 plus 1,600 so not only is that magic number no pun intended becoming even more likely for Orlando but teams are starting to be pushed down in the odds Philly plus 1600 it’s crazy the Lakers plus 650 and then you get that jump and it’s basically it feels like and it looks like according to these if you were to take these pretty literally that it’s going to come down to the Warriors of the magic which is absolutely ridiculous because it’s just insane to me not that it’s good or bad it’s just crazy to me that this is happening that we’re even in the conversation and we’re basically it feels like we’re the final two he they going to go back to the Bay or it’s going to come to Orlando so that’s that’s really where my mind’s at is is free agency I am a little relieved that like the first round is over for the draft and we can move forward hopefully get some extension news and then move into that free agency period on Sunday uh and hopefully our episode on Sunday night that we record is jam-packed we’ll see yeah it’s it’s going to be really interesting to see how everything pans out you obviously with all the moves at the Knicks making it seems like Isaiah hartstein is a guy that’s going to be super available uh Brian windhorse is reporting earlier today Golden State Warriors are prepared to trade for Paul George and offer him a full four-year Max contract if that were to happen seems like it makes Klay Thompson a lot more available some of the the moves that the Washington Wizards today they made you know trading Denny AIA bringing in Malcolm Brogden it seems like that’s going to make a guy like tyus Jones available Luke if you had to choose two out of those three to bring in in free agency right tus Jones Klay Thompson Isaiah hartenstein which of those two would would be the guys that you would make a move for I’d go tus Jones and hardenstein [Music] and I mean if I can H if I tell you we we Marquel folz leaves we we don’t bring Joe Engles back and Gary Harris is gone yeah then I just would be cool with with tus and hardenstein I think bringing in clay as exciting as it would be just we’ve talked at nauseum about it but as cool as it would be from it being it’s Klay Thompson on the magic regardless of the state that he’s in in his career I think that it takes it puts Jaylen Suggs in the point guard role that I just would rather him be the two if I’m being honest so if you do things like you know Gary Harris is gone and marquel’s gone it’s like okay well then you have kind of a point guard hole unless you’re going to put Anthony black there I just would rather see just from a S just for me to feel good I would love to just sign tius slot him into that point guard position Suggs gets to be at the two which I think is where he thrives then you’ve obviously got fron Pao and then you’ve got a decision if you do bring in hartenstein what you’re doing with Dell do you I at that point you just obviously move Del to the bench for the time being before deadline you could do something right it doesn’t have to be Dell that moves but then you’re looking at you’ve got Mo Vagner you’ve got ji Goa probably in this instance is gone especially if you pick up hardenstein so I think that is what I would want is your answer any different would you rather bring in clay and ditch one of the other two I I really don’t know I do see the potential of both of them like causing fit issues like if you’re bringing in clay and and Jake fiser has talked you know about the fact that it seems like the magic are only interested in in paying Klay Thompson like a two-year max type of like balloon offer if you’re bringing him in you’re paying him that much money it is to start I can’t see Jaylen Suggs being moved to the bench at this point just given how impactful and how good he’s been and how much you know he means to this team if you bring in hartenstein it’s a little bit a clunky fit because then again it is what do you do with Wendell Carter Jr if they make a move for hartenstein I would expect Dell to be moved pretty quickly right I just feel like the the the team Dynamic um would suffer the least in that regard now as we’re talking about it if you’re you’re paying Dell what is it like $1 million if you have to pay hartenstein $25 million a year is that really worth the if you even see that as an upgrade over over Wendell the only way that I see it as a clear upgrade would just be in in terms of like availability right with you know maybe you hartenstein will be a little bit more durable in that role where you know we we can kind of pencil in Wendell to miss 15 to 20 games outside of that doesn’t give you the same shooting a as Wendell um you know defensively rebounding you know both of those guys are really solid so I I just have questions like whatever they decide I think I’ll probably maybe this is like a homer thing to say or or a bias thing to say but I’ll find a way to talk myself into it I I think any way that you go there are going to be like pros and cons to it there’s going to be an argument for and against any of those moves I think I would probably go tus Jones and hartenstein because point guard is absolutely like offensively probably the biggest need for this team especially the starting lineup um and then you after that you’re you’re going to have some tough decisions to make if you go clay or you go hartenstein I got another I need you to pick one okay they don’t go hand in hand so just because of one doesn’t mean the other right this is just purely hypothetical if you were given a choice Klay Thompson or Cory kissper I mean you have to give up a lot less to get Cory kissper it seems like I at this point in time I’d probably go kissper CU you could bring him off the bench and you know nobody’s really all that up ET about it and you have to give up minimal assets probably and yeah it fits the timeline way better than a Clay Thompson I I think that’s the obvious answer obviously kissper there might be people that are in love with Klay Thompson or the the idea of of getting him on in Pinstripes but Cory kisper because the reason I bring him up is because in light of the Wizards transactions today and looking at that and being like oh also there’s another Report with the wizard that Malcolm Brogden is like possibly getting moved as well so they’re not they don’t even care about the player piece that they got in that trade for Denny so they’re going full fire sale Cory kissper could be out the door because if Denny’s too you know about the about you know too old for that team or whatever the heck they’re doing then Cory kissper definitely is and kiser’s like a year older maybe the same age but kissper is is is apparently reportedly available for trade and he shot six threes a game last year 38% the year before that he shot five at 42.5% so if you get him in a situation on a act on an actual good team like the magic and you do have you know guys like Pao and fron who are going to penetrate and Pitch cor kiser’s a dream candidate for that in my opinion fits the timeline better and is going to give you high volume 3s 6 plus three attempts a game and could shoot anywhere from 38 to 40 to 41% on that volume that’s a dream for me to be honest I would love that and a little bit of my attention has shifted to Corey kissper and I’m hoping that the magic ex kaga teammate of jayen sugs exactly there you go so like that we’ll there’s just so many directions and like you Jonathan you made the point of oh it might seem Homer that I’m able to convince myself with any of these transactions but the reality is they’re all good situations it’s not good problems to have it’s not like the bulls with their you know the giving away Alex Caruso and then having to talk themselves into the fact that they like the trade some some Bulls fans did that and you know how I know that because I myself as a magic fan have done the exact same thing with trades right what’s the alternative it just be miserable like right you have to buy in at some point but that is just not the case like regardless of I shouldn’t say regardless but realistically what we’ve seen is on the table for this team in free agency there’s no reason you should really have to be convincing yourself after the fact your knee-jerk reaction for any of this stuff shouldn’t be oh man I hate that unless you’re just want to whine to wine and you were set on something which you shouldn’t be because this front office will probably go the opposite direction of what you think will happen but nonetheless I I think that any of these options that you do in free agency the magic are just in such a great spot it’s going to be pretty difficult to royally screw this up and I just don’t think that Jeff welman’s the guy that’s going to do that this Justin from the Orlando Magic official social media Tristan da Silva will wear number 23 so sorry Jordan bone thought you had a chance to that number retired but uh they’ve decided to move on was that nickname public by the way for Jordan bone or we that was on public thing that people didn’t affectionately call him his nickname what I don’t know what you’re talking about it’s probably best that we don’t speak because I have no idea what you’re going to say perect yeah we probably we’ll probably just move on we’ll we’ll talk about that off off air I suppose and now we’re going to be getting questions about what is uh Jordan bonees just DM me I’ll tell you his nickname anyway continue perfect yeah so uh but no I think for me really what I want to see is I just want to see the magic be aggressive like realize that sure Boston’s going to be really good New York’s going to be really good you know teams in the Eastern Conference are making moves we need to make moves to your point we’ve only really seen like rebuild super patient Jeff welman I want to see Jeff get a little bit of aggressive push this team forward and make some real moves the the Corey kissper move I I would like that there are you know a number of other guys like ultimately just do what you need to do to improve this team they’re patient in this draft it seems like waiting at 18 they got a guy that they were you know really after and really coveted in uh really happy for Tristan the Silva and happy for the magic as Jeff wman always says exciting time to be an Orlando Magic fan and yeah looking forward to Summer League coming up in in just a couple of weeks here we where we’ll be able to watch Tristan D Silva and Jet Howard maybe Anthony black I I wouldn’t be against seeing AB at Summer League you know given the fact that you know he sat a good chunk of the season and just want to see how he’s been improving um you know this uh this offseason Luke but yeah now we are on to frency and I think everybody is you know in agreeance that like it is time for Jeff Wiman to to make some moves here and you know push the gas a little bit for this team hey uh trivia time real quick Jonathan for you yeah my family my my roots my Heritage is Portugal okay can you guess what my last name was before they changed it to Sylvia when they came over to the states the Silva bang maybe Tristan the Silva and I I know it it can be seen that we strikingly similar and stature looks basketball ability maybe we’re related you know maybe we are related Tristan D Silva and I my mom told me something when I was growing up if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all that is going to 1. Luke low key, you are ticking me off my brother. Why do you have to be such a pesimist, i know this is just how you are. But how can you guys not see that Da silva is great piece for us. I too wanted Dalton, but when it came down to McCain, Dalton, and Tristan, i knew we were good. We are going to address guards through trades or free agency. Jett and him will both get minutes. Jett will get minutes at the 2. Tristan will back up Franz and some for Paolo. Ingles will
Not be getting his option picked up and gary is going to move on. Chuma will be done aswell. To your point, we have only seen weltman bringing life back from the dead. Life is good Luke!

  2. Tristan was one of my guys, so I'm very excited that we added him. That being said I would've loved any of the 3 guys drafted right ahead of us by the Heat, Sixers, Lakers, too. Especially those 3 teams. The Lakers falling ass backwards into Knecht was especially annoying, but I do wish the best for J.J. Reddick, so I can at least rationalize it that way.

Maybe the Magic legit would've taken Tristan even if Knecht was there, he just checks so many boxes that they look for (Knecht doesn't check the defense box, maybe not the positional versatility box either).
