What’s Next For The Carolina Hurricanes? 2024 Off-Season Plan

in today’s video we’re jumping back to our NHL offseason plan series we’re now looking at the third ranked team from the regular season the Carolina Hurricanes they’ve been making the playoffs for a long time they’ve had a hard time though getting over that hump and getting to the Stanley Cup Final or even sometimes back to the Eastern final what do they do this off season to try to take that next step we’ll discuss that coming up next so welcome back to another video here at Top Shelf hockey as I mentioned today we’re looking at the third ranked team from the regular season the Carolina Hurricanes and analyzing what their offseason moves are going to be so in case you’re new to this series we started at Team 32 we’re working our way all the way up to number one obviously only a couple of teams left the Hurricanes were third in the league overall in a regular season standing so we’re going to recap last season uh with some team and individual stats take a look at moves they’ve made throughout the year their salary cap space that they have right now restricted free agents unrestricted free AG determine who can come back who’s going to likely move on and one of their top questions facing this franchise so let’s first dive in and get started with recapping the 2324 campaign for the Hurricanes uh they finished with a record of 52 23 and 7 111 points another real solid regular season they’ve been basically first or second in their division um for the last couple of years really really good uh they’ve had some playoffs where they’ve gone won either one round two rounds like they me it to to the Eastern uh final they’ve gone to the second round a few times like this team has been really good it just seems like they’re always missing just like that one piece or something to get over that hump so obviously another really good campaign uh they scored 277 goals this year which was the eighth most in the league pretty good result goals against was only 211 that’s really good as well fourth best in the league power play very respectable 26.9 number two in the league penalty killing 86.4 number one in the league so you know to beat top one or two in both special teams categories be a top defensive team and a top 10 offensive team like that’s a lot of really good stuff there like that you can’t get a whole lot better than that which you know explains why they were so good in the regular season and playoffs were were good as well but not good enough so you know we thought that they had that extra piece this year with Jake gendel and it it did not work out for them looking at their top individual performances they got Sebastian AO leading the team in scoring with 89 points gensel even though a lot of those points came in Pittsburgh he technically had the second most points with 77 Seth Jarvis with 67s next Terra vinan and NES both with 53 snov with 52 but he missed a bunch of time and only played in 59 games so sov definitely would have had more for sure um the gold hunter who played the most this year was kov with Anderson missing significant time due to the blood clotting issue and of course ranta not performing well ending up in the miners for a spell as well kov finished with a record of 2313 and four a 2.33 goals against and a 911 save percentage so um their youngest goalie has been the best goalie I mean Freddy Anderson when he did return he was brilliant leading into the playoffs and then in the playoffs I’m sorry but my opinion he let them down uh Freddy Anderson does not have a great playoff record so we’ll get into that here a little bit later as well uh I mean but his regular season numbers when he did play he had a 1.84 and a 932 like the stretch of games that he played when he came back were phenomenal 13-2 record like insane numbers but in the playoffs Anderson’s sa percentage dipped from 932 to 895 and that was a significant reason why they did not make it through any further and get to like the East final or the Stanley Cup Final gold hunting was a big part of the problem uh inseason changes of course we saw a few trades throughout the year nothing too serious until the deadline October 10th saw the Caleb Jones trade not long after that they traded Kade Weber to the map leaves because they knew that Weber wasn’t going to sign they get a six round pick in return at the deadline they made a significant trade to get Jake gensel from Pittsburgh moving uh Michael bunting who they just signed as the UFA and I believe it was about three prospects uh they also added V Kus net off with 50% retention from Washington for a third round pick so gel was really good for them and very productive and was a nice addition um and it’s going to be a challenge to keep him KZ Nets off wasn’t as consistent as you’d like but for the most part that was for the for the price that they pay with 50% retain to Washington it it was it was good uh we’ll see what the future holds him of course at the end of the year there was a lot of speculation about head coach Rod bremore but uh that’s all looked after he has signed a 5-year contract extension and of course Don wadell the GM well he ended up leaving I mean he was involved with getting brendam over that contract uh he did the end of season media availability you had no idea that he was even going to be potentially gone we found out shortly after that media availability that his contract was expiring and wasn’t expected to renew and he bolted up for the GM job in Columbus um so woodell out Eric tulsky the internal candidate who was the AGM for some time a bit of an analytics Guru has taken over that role and um so far you know he was a he was somebody that was well respected in the league and in within the organization and it was kind of viewed upon as an upand cominging GM so it was a good um good hire good internal hire and if they didn’t hire him I think they would have been that serious risk for him to consider leaving as well but Eric tulsk is a new GM now that was a significant move at the end of their campaign so they got a new GM bremore under contract for five years that should bring a lot of stability there now it’s just under the roster stuff um cap wise they have 23.8 million in space this year and they have 19 contracts on the books for next year as well they don’t have a ton of expiring deals and the cap space isn’t too bad but they do have a few big ones to look after contract wise a new restricted free agent category we got Seth Jarvis Martin NIS Jack jury Max comall and Dylan Kaufman I would suspect that there’s a chance that Max comtois is not qualified or retained coflin is debatable I think he probably gets a qualifying offer um NES and jury are potential trade pieces we’ll get into that Seth Jarvis will be the main one getting the BigTime contract on the UFA side we got Jake gensel Jordan martinuk Stefan n tavu teravan Tony D’Angelo Brett pesy Brady Shay and Goldie ranta now ranta won’t be back that’s a given between pesi and Shay they’re probably both not coming back it’s beli that Shay is a much more likely player amongst those two uh veteran defenseman to resign uh pesi there’s a lot of speculation he may be heading to New Jersey um so we’ll see about that uh but he’s probably better odds than not not returning to Carolina um Tony D’Angelo I would suspect probably isn’t returning either I know Terra vinan Mark nuke gensel and N there’s most likely that they all make it to the market at least on July 1 I would think that there’s a chance that n or meru could possibly return gensel I think the odds they’re they’re still in the mix I just don’t know that they’re going to have a good opportunity here uh as I record this video uh on Wednesday two days before the draft elen Mev was traded just tonight uh to create more space in Vancouver there’s a a big connection against the Vancouver so I think that right now i’ I’d probably label them the Front Runners I don’t know if Carolina I know they’re still in it but I think the odds are keeping gel or Slim in my honest opinion uh Terra Viner was also speculated to be able to to hit the market as well I don’t know what the odds are of him coming back so they’re going to have some holes in this lineup I mean they may only have a handful of spots open up based on what signed for next year but it it’s some interesting pieces nonetheless um looking at the 24 NHL draft they do have nine picks they picked 27th overall in round one um a lot of picks between the third and second round so um be intered to see what they do with the draft there could be some draft day trades they might even get another first round pick um we’ll get into that here as well the top questions facing the franchise one we’re going to see some turnover on the blue line it’s believed Jacob slaven will be signing a pretty significant contract extension on July 1st uh Elliot Freeman believes that they have something already basically agreed to and it should be something that’s comes out pretty early into free agency uh looking at an 8-year extension around that $6.5 million Mark um and that’ll help retain him for like the the biggest part of his career here and then between peshi and Shay uh like I said most likely only one go I think peshi goes they’ve been negotiating with him forever I think because of uh because of the fact that they knew that they may not be able to keep both it’s kind of prevented them from kind of picking the market might dictate but uh Shay likely gets extended so if he extends Shay he extends slaven you get Burns there um we’ll see what else Carolina does I wouldn’t be completely shocked if they they do hit the market maybe for another defenseman but it’s going to be interesting to see what else they do on that front um yeah on goal tending I mean we’ve got K off we got Freddy Anderson like I said R is not back uh so the big question here’s do you come back with kov and Anderson and maybe kov gets more of a chance to play in the big moments um there is some speculation that they are exploring the goalie Market as well and that they could have been involved with some trade talks we know Marty H is most likely not returning to to uh Carolina that’s you know very much uh extremely likely okay okay uh there has been some talk that Nashville is one of the teams that are very interested in him and that maybe UC SOS steame could come up if Carolina got SOS and I would suspect that um Anderson probably would go to Nashville or they’d have to move they’d have to move Freddy Anderson somewhere I would not think they wouldn’t want to I would think they wouldn’t want to move kov I mean but I mean how’s kov going to feel if they go out and get another starting golender that they’re going to sign for a long-term extension that’s going to eliminate him from being the starter I don’t know how that I’m not sure that makes sense I think kov is their guy to me I think he’s a real good goalie um so if I’m Carolina I’m running with kov I either Anderson he’s signed for one more year he becomes more of a backup to me like he’s really good in the regular season so you help him let him help you get those wins to have a good regular season but I’m going with kov in the playoffs that’s what I would do I don’t know what they’ll do but there’s certainly a question mark there about if they come back with that tandem um cuz last year there was a lot of kind of different times of the year different guys kind of running with the ball so we’ll see how that all works out as far as NES go like I said there’s lots of speculation um they’re going to prioritize Seth Jarvis to get a long-term big money extension over NES uh so by the time they extend slaven they bring back hopefully Brady Shay they give Jarvis a bunch of money that’s going to eat into that $23 million they have available uh they need a few depth pieces in there so I honestly don’t think uh there’s any chance n’s returns I mean I guess if they don’t get their trade price maybe but um you know it’s believed that he doesn’t really want to be there uh we’ve heard about like I said Nashville for SOS or other pieces maybe there’s been some talk about Winnipeg for Nick eers being a possible trade uh there’s seen some reports earlier tonight that the devils and sabes both in that mix regarding first round picks like Pick 10 and 11 between New Jersey and buffalo um but I believe Carolina wants a hockey trade like another player coming back similar age or a young decent player that can be in their lineup and have an impact right away they view NIS as a potential budding star and they want somebody in return who has a same sort of potential so I don’t know um that some of those first round picks really make sense unless they turn around and flip that Elsewhere for a different piece so we’ll see but Jervis is going to get a a good uh signing on the other hand NES is going to get traded just a matter of where uh Patrick L’s name has been out there for a potential fit as well um obviously he makes over $8 million you know belief is Columbus would prefer to move that contract without retaining I don’t know that they’re going to be able to do that uh he’s got two years left I think it’s 8.7 uh but Carolina would be a great spot for loning and if they’re going to lose gensel loning might be another option for them um especially if Columbus can eat some of that money they can knock that down to maybe like 6 million next day for example or or six and a quarter or something like that um then you’ve got potentially a guy who might be able to score you as many goals as gel but for a cheaper price and he’s younger so you know Lon of course being from Finland has you know has played he I’m a lot of connections from you know the international play with like AO and some of the other teammates there so I think it could be a good fit we’ll see um cocki another name out there who’s expected to I don’t know for sure that he’s going to be gone but I think Carolina’s going to do everything they can to move on from him whether they do a bio cuz he’s still young enough they I think they should be able to do a one-third bio would be which wouldn’t be too bad or trade him with some retained money um you know maybe cocki could be one of the pieces if they do move line to Carolina maybe Cami could be a piece to go back a younger centerman that could maybe fit better over there and get a better chance to fulfill that contract and see if he can make a better go of it um that would certainly help from an account perspective if if they retain even a little bit of line like I said knock it down from 8.7 to like let’s say they retain 2 million and then you move uh cock’s contract out well that’s over 4 million then you know you’re not eating too much into your available cap space and you get Lana in the mix you extend Jarvis you know we’ll see what comes back for NES if they did do a trade like eers well eers and line are best buddies or at least they used to be when they played the winter Peg together so um that could be an interesting U addition to the Hurricanes lineup but in all honesty like um I do think that we could we could maybe see them between uh gensel likely departing for for your free agency and then the NES trade and we could see a couple of new scoring Wingers come in to uh replace them the back end’s going to be the most interesting um like I said they they’ve got some pieces there slaven will be there we got Burns for another year they likely get Chay back they already resigned Jaylen Chatfield he get a a decent contract which based on what he’s getting paid leads me to think he’s probably going to get more of a top four minutes roll so you know between Burns and Chatfield Shan and slaven that’s probably your top four uh you know guys like Coughlin and some other pieces that are um you know some guys that are more your depth options so maybe they go into free agency maybe they bring in you know one veteran guy that’s on a cheaper shorter term deal and that’s probably your your backend um like I said I don’t think D’Angelo will be back a few changes up front but they’re going to be an interesting team to watch for sure this team needs to find a way they’ got so much talent they’re so good but the playoffs have been you know not where they want it to be so will these moves be enough to get them over the hump and what do you see the returns being obviously lots of questions what are the answers
