[David Pagnotta] “Follow up: Sense I’ve gotten from League sources is they want things to cool down in AZ before pursuing new ownership prospects. And the key will be having an appropriate and legitimate arena plan in place first.”

  1. Translation: Phoenix metro on the backburner. Same as places like Kansas City, Houston, Quebec City, a 2nd Toronto squad, and New Orleans.

  2. Well Bettman said Muerelo was the victim and it was the state’s fault…. “Because he tried very hard and circumstances there were not very favourable or friendly, and that’s evidenced by the fact that he couldn’t get the level of support from the government to put in another arena which would’ve created jobs and opportunities for the community.”

As to where this latest development leaves the future of NHL hockey in Arizona, Bettman was non-committal.

“That’s not something we’re focused on right now,” he said.

  3. >legitimate arena plan in place

I am sure this means ground already broken. Not some renderings posted to Social Media.

  4. The whole, “Build an arena first and THEN we might talk about a team.” Idea is idiotic. The Alamodome is a perfect example. Built to show they were serious about an NFL team and still nothing. Also renovated the dome to attract MLS and once again nothing. Building a specific soccer stadium is in the works.

So even if they do build it, it might be empty for a few years before a team even arrives.
