by booking.com booking doy the right the right State can make you a fan of any City even your Rivals so check out booking.com for your stay today now the Rangers dropped the finale and got swept by the Brewers coming off their longest streak winning streak of the Season where it looked like this team was finally turning things around they turned and did a u-turn and said nope we’re g to go right back in the wrong direction after getting much closer to the Mariners in the standings still not all that far away from the Mariners in the standings or that third wild card spot the Rangers just come off an abysmal gut KCK groin kick face punch of a series sweep against the the Brewers now the Rangers don’t play the Brewers often but the last two series The Rangers have played against the Brewers they have not won a single game now in case you don’t remember last year’s Brewer series that was where really all the madness and Badness of the back half of August where everything felt like the sky was falling that’s where it really started to crystallize the Rangers had been coming off of a a very long winning streak they lose the final game of that Series against the Angels because well a certain left-handed starting pitcher redmer having to look amazing for the angels and just completely shut down the Rangers offense okay well that’s one bad game after a really prolonged stretch of success for the Rangers surely things won’t spiral off a cliff and then they face the Brewers they had three just wonky games where it felt like okay those are just all dumb losses that are that are pretty a typical it’s not going to be a sign of of things to come and then they went into Arizona had two more awful losses and then it just kept on spiraling from there to where the point at that point it felt like the season was was out of control and they were feeling really good heading into that Series against the Brewers which was at home by the way it wasn’t even in Milwaukee like this one was but this one the Rangers were feeling great about themselves have a stupid loss on Monday just one of those you know dumb silly losses that like okay it’s not an indicative of of anything you know major wrong with this team you just brush that off as like okay th those dumb ones happen occasionally even the B good Bullpen guys occasionally get tagged for losses things like that happen then the Tuesday night loss that was just that was just not great baseball it it it just really was there’s no other way to describe it and then this loss in the finale I mean just talk about an a abysmally painful loss when you go up with your ace against a guy who was called up that day who is just the FR frest of Fringe big Leaguers in Dallas K and you can’t get the win you can’t get the win with your Ace versus Dallas freaking Kyo in the year of Our Lord 2024 I mean what are we freaking doing what what what what’s going on here what is happening this guy was washed when he was with the Rangers in 2022 abysmal it was terrible with the twins last year and yet this Brewers team has had so many injuries to their pitchers that they’ve turned to the likes of Dallas kyel and you thought okay surely if this offense can’t get going against Dallas kyel then who can they get going and after a perfect one two three first inning with a couple of strikeouts from your two hole and three hole hitters you thought oh my God don’t you dare don’t you dare lay an egg against Dallas K and well this offense didn’t lay an egg against Dallas K they got him out of the game after four Innings they dropped five runs on him including a pair of home runs by the two guys who needed home runs the most on this entire team inel loow and Jonah Heim but they still could not get the job done because everything just happens to go wrong for the Rangers everything just happens to be going wrong at the exact wrong time for the Rangers for most of the season the top three in the order have been you know mostly stepping up in Simeon and normally Cory Seager in the two hole and Josh Smith in the three- hole and the middle and bottom of the order just have not gotten the job done but that wasn’t the case in this one I mean I want to lambast Robbie Gman because watching him hit second in in this order just makes me want to tear my hair out and throw my monitor and you know scream in into the sky at uh the many baseball gods that have plagued this offense this year but I can’t because of the top three in this order he had the best day of all three of them the Rangers two of their three best players the top three of the order when it combined 0 for 10 with four strikeouts and a double play hit in and also all four of those strikeouts were from Josh Smith which not not to demean Josh Smith everybody has a bad day but the fact that it happened that day when the rest of the offense was stepping up when they finally got a great game from Nathaniel L they finally got some power from Jonah Heim they finally got a great game from Davis wizel I mean when the Rangers made the move to option Ezekiel Durant and call up Derk Hill I thought okay I get it I understand the sentiment Chris Young said it’s it’s time for results and we don’t think Zeke is performing the like the player we think he is and like he thinks he is so we’re going to send him down to Triple A he’s going to work on making some changes getting some confidence back in his swing and hopefully come back here and help this offense and I get that that’s a totally valid sentiment and I I tend to agree that Zeke has not performed like the player I think he is like I’m sure he thinks he is and wanting to get him going makes sense but the big old butt here is when the options to replace him aren’t better but are significantly worse then you’re doing yourself a disservice at the major league level you’re making the offense worse in the immediate in hopes for maybe down the road it’ll be better but by the time Zeke Daran starts to figure it out by the time he gets the number of that bats to you know figure things out and get it right I’m thinking Josh Young will be back and so whatever spot Zeke dur might occupy in the lineup will be gone or maybe EV Carter will be back and so there’s another lineup spot that will not be present for Zeke to get himself right and inject himself into this offense and if you think Derrick Hill is going to solve this offense I know he’s having was has been having a great year in Round Rock I mean absolutely fantastic 176 pled appearances with 1,45 Ops that’s that’s really good but again the chasm between Triple A and the big leagues this year is as big as it’s ever been and he’s not performing at the big league level and not to mention his defensive laps we’ll get into that later on in the show but when those are the guys you’re you’re putting in you’re you’re saying oh no Zeke Duran isn’t hitting like we want him to so we’re going to plug in Robbie Gman oh Zeke Duran isn’t hitting like we want him to so we’re going to plug in you know Davis winzel oh Le tar isn’t performing we’re gonna call up Derek Hill to fix this offense now granted I I thought that Derrik Hill might get a little bit more time I thought he might make the roster out camp because he had a great spring but he has not had a lot of success in his major league career I mean a 59 career Ops he’s only had one season with an Ops above 600 that was in 49 games with Detroit in 2021 where he had a 71 Ops not exactly lighting the world on fire and and that’s the guy you want think is going to inject a spark into your offense really you sure about that that’s what’s going to fix it there are so many problems with this offense right now is is so much of a collective funk I mean everybody on this roster that played Major League Baseball last year got significant reps has a worse Ops than last year outside of Josh Smith Josh Smith God bless you being the only bright spot in this offense getting better this year as opposed to last year nobody else is doing that simeon’s numbers significantly down seager’s numbers significantly down low him the y adolis all the numbers significantly down and you think that changing the guy who is going to be your second choice bench option is going to inject a spark into this offense I know you had to do something but it feels like at that kind of a move is just a little bit of desperation here are locked on Rangers we pride ourselves at getting you the latest news for your team whether it’s the offseason the draft spring training or the available to us customers now this loss yesterday afternoon typical weird Wednesday mat a kind of a game and one that I would definitely choose to classify under theud loss category not a oh my gosh everything about this team is totally broken but a really that’s the way you decide to lose the bottom middle third and bottom third of this lineup actually step up I mean you get a great game from ad from from Wyatt Langford from Nathaniel low from Jonah Heim from Davis winzel you get great games offensively from all of them and you can’t get the win you score five rounds you you Drive the starter out after four Innings you got your Ace on the hill you got your your top pen arms the top three all used in this game and you still get the loss I mean having two having one of those games you know every two weeks is is fine but having two out of three games be stupid losses and the other one in the series being a confounding incredibly frustrating loss where you just get absolutely blanked by a bullpen game that makes for an incredibly my numbingly frustrating series especially when you look at how some of these runs were given up I mean the fact that the Rangers got out of the jam in the ninth inning with a runner on third a tie game and less than two outs and Kirby hes just went beast mode and was able to get out of that jam and then you still lose that game it’s just incredibly mind-numbingly frustrating because all five runs that Nathan e evaldi gave up he went seven innings was pretty economical with his pitch count only walked one and that one walk led to four of the five runs given up because right after it right after what should have been strike three called Runners on first and second should have been strike three called wasn’t ended up turning into from what should have been a four-pitch strikeout in getting out of the inning turned into an eight pitch walk the only walk of the day which immediately led to a grand slam just an incredibly frustrating way to give up a massive Tater not that there’s a good way to give up a massive Tater but I mean pitch number four to Willie Damas which was a curveball that you know was almost completely in the zone and you know it’s a borderline pitch and I get that but the fact that the Zone was so freaking inconsistent was so inconsistent from the top of the inning to the bottom of the inning I mean even at bat to At Bat I mean pitch one of that of that at bat was a fast ball clearly off the plate inside you know high enough to be a strike zone at the letters but still inside off the pl that was called a strike and then later on a pitch that was much more in the zone a little bit higher but still in the zone was called ball three ball two instead of strike three and then immediately leading to that grand slam and then the other runs scoring play was a in the most air quotes I can possibly give an inside the park home run by Jackson Chio on a ball that was clearly going to be a single by Derek Hill if if played correctly by Derrick Hill in center field but no Derrik Hill wanted to be a hero first game back up on the majors saying I want to I want to make this this leaping play I’m going to make this beautiful dive play which for those of you who don’t like Leo’s defense because you know he he doesn’t dive for balls or he doesn’t take the best routes or doesn’t make the whatever your your flaws with with with leot he doesn’t dive for balls unless he absolutely has to is absolutely sure that he is going to get it and making a diving play on this with the Rangers had taken storm back and taken the lead this was a one-run game and Nathan iali had just gotten himself out of a leadoff single by inducing a double play this would have possibly ended the ending but you know Jackson Chio is a incredibly fast runner one of the fastest in Major League Baseball and you think diving for this ball is a good option absolutely mind-numbing mindboggling boneheaded play there by Derrik Hill that to the game tying run that meant that this game would go to extras and the Rangers could not do anything else offensively after that four run fourth inning this was right after that they had just taken the lead and immediately you take this kind of a risk on a play with two outs just incredibly frustrating and not to get e of Aldi off the hook for that which should have been a strikeout ended up being a walk those things happen occasionally that happens now it’s incredibly frustrating that the amount of generous calls out of the Zone especially in the top of the 10th inning first pitch of two diff two consecutive at bats pitches that were well off the Zone were called balls for Rangers pitchers but were called strikes for Brewers pitchers to start in that bat in the 10th inning for Josh Smith and also for Adas Garcia which put you in so much more of a hole it’s just incredibly frustrating to see that kind of you know is Zone inconsistency if you’re going to make a Zone big make the Zone big for everybody if you’re going to make the Zone small make the Zone small for everybody that’s the only way the only fair way to do it when you do it so inconsistently it’s incredibly frustrating but eventually you know there are bad umpires you’re going to have to deal with that you’re going to have to you know learn how to handle those kind of situations and bounce back and and usually Nathan yali has been really good about that about you know battling you know those those in consistencies you know coming through in the big situations coming through in the clutch that is nathany of all these you know bread and butter that is what makes him one of the best pitchers in this league but the first pitch after that walk to willia Damas is a splitter to Jake Bowers and Nathan yaldi splitter has been phenomenal this year this is the first home run he’s given up on that splitter it was a split that was left way in the middle of the zone and Bowers just absolutely annihilated ated it 444 ft 108 mph off the bat there was there was no doubt that that thing was a grand slam and an absolute gut KCK for the Rangers and that was not great for me evaldi that was exactly what they needed to not happen I mean if if that splitter had been exactly where he wanted it to be I mean it’s not just that splitter has been great this year and he hasn’t had you know too much of a problem with the Home Run ball with splitter he it was great amazing last year too including last year he has now given up three home runs on the splitter in the regular season the last two years three that’s pretty incredible and he also didn’t have a problem with walks you know he was just getting these blue pits Here There and Yan and they just ended up adding up all at the wrong time for him it’s just an incredibly frustrating frustrating kind of game for him for the Rangers to lose in this fashion when they’re in you know they it looked like they were turning a corner offensively you know pitching Wise It’s been solid all year long but to get this kind of a performance to give up a Grand Slam in that situation from your Ace man this season has just been absolutely incredibly painful at the worst moments this episode of lockon reindeers is brought to you by booking.com booking doy with Summer travel heating up especially for travel for baseball games it’s time to explore linkedin.com lockon and get started now one of the things that Chris Young said when he was announcing making the move about sending Ezekiel Duran down to Triple A to try and get him right and to say that y this is a results based business we are having bad results we need to have better results and we can’t have any excuses anymore one of the things that he said was if you’re doing well in Triple A there will will be a spot for you on this roster to try and help this offense because the guys we have right now are not getting the job done that’s just a fact they aren’t guys like Adis Garcia not getting it done Daniel low to this point in the season has not been getting it done Jaheim has not been getting it done so far same with the ver same with pretty much all this offense outside of Cory Seager and Josh Smith heck even Marcus Simeon has been in a very long slump I mean the month of April was was solid for me at a 676 767 Ops not the other way around but since then it has been tough sledding for Marcus I mean his numbers in June just have not been good he’s hitting 230 his on base is just 323 and a 345 slugging percentage that is that it’s not going to get the job done for a guy who is at the top of your order who is you know is supposed to be kicking kickstarting this offense and he just hasn’t been as of late I mean his last 15 games he doesn’t have a single home run he’s hitting under 200 his on base is under 220 and his slugging is also under 220 you look at the last seven games it’s been incredibly rough for Marcus his average and on base are both 129 and his slugging is below 200 slugging it’s been a rough rough stretch for Marcus and a rough stretch for this offense as well because as Marcus Simeon goes this offense goes and I don’t know if he is still nursing that injury that he had to take a day off for that turned into you know two off days in a row and he looked much much better after coming off with those you know two off days one game off and one off day he looked much better for about the stretch of a week and really since then he’s gone back to being in a prolonged slum so I don’t know if that collision with Adas Garcia is is also leading to what’s been going wrong with dois I mean elombe took some time off as well pretty closely after when that happened May maybe that Collision is the is the story of this season if those two guys you know two incredibly important anchors for your offense if both those guys are are still hurting still banged up from that you know along with the other injuries and things that this team has been dealing with that maybe that was the moment that we didn’t realize at the moment that things started to go way way way down the tracks because this team is recently as you know early May was at first place in the AOS for a little while they were doing well they did get off to a half decent start while they were waiting for those reinforcements to rejoin the rotation but they suffered just so much offensive inaptitude B basically since May 1st they have been one of the worst offenses in Major League Baseball and of teams that aren’t in last place in the division they they are the worst of teams who were one through four in their division they have the worst offense since May 1st it’s been so rough it has been so incredibly rough and it just it just needs to stop there’s no there’s no nothing there there’s no Magic Touch or whatever I I think that roster changes you know making guys who are every players earn their spot back outside of you know Smith and seagar and well Simeon is going to be there every day whether he’s slumping or not he’s going to be there every day but everybody else on side of Jonah Jonah his offense is a bonus because he is a catcher and that position is so important defensively outside of that everybody’s job should be you know up in the air and I think that calling up Derrick Hill was the wrong call up not because I think Derrik Hill is terrible I’m not rooting for him no I I’m rooting for everybody on this roster to succeed and to start hitting I I hope that they all start hitting collectively all at the same time and the Rangers start scoring 10 Rounds game and win every game from now until eternity that’d be nice that’d be really good for business I’d like to have the problem of you know figuring out how to talk in new ways about the Rangers being the greatest team ever if they won 100 or the last 80 something games of the season in a row and then swept their way to another world series I would like the problem of having to figure out how to talk about in new ways how amazing this team is it’d be much better than figuring out in new ways how to talk about how terrible this offense has been which is what the last two months have been it’s not as fun but I think a guy who is who I wasn’t sure was going to crack the roster out of spring training who I am just begging for to get at bats now is Justin fosu fosi was optioned to Triple A Round Rock and having him be optioned when the Rangers you know need guys who can Mash Lefty pitching guys who could just hit period the fact that he is is primarily DH only maybe a little first base maybe a little left field I don’t think he’s going to slot in at third base over Josh Smith or at second base over Marcus Simeon but Justin fosu should be getting some at bats at the major league level you want a guy who can Crush lefties and can’t really play defense that well but can actually hit for power can give you quality at bats can give you walks can give you on base that’s Justin fosy baby that should not be Robbie grman it should not it should be Justin fosu spot to hit occasionally high up in this order when Cory Seager or Josh Smith gets a day off against a tough Lefty it should be Justin fosu in there because unlike Robbie Gman I’m pretty sure Justin fos can hit a ball over the fence I’m not sure Grossman can at this point I know he’s done it once this season but I’m not banking much on him doing it again and other guys returning this lineup I me we’re still waiting on Josh Young we did get some good news on his you know slight setback the the only thing that was going on there was some inflammation thankfully the screws are still in there there was some question about that after he took some swings about you know was everything going to be you know set back entirely he went all the way to Arizona to go get everything checked out by the doctor that performed the surgery said he’s going to start swinging a bat here in the next couple of days we’ll see exactly when that is but I’m not really anticipating him playing in this series against B Baltimore would be nice I know he would like to be out there but making sure that he is good to go for the Long Haul once he actually gets back in this lineup and doesn’t just land right back on the iil that’s important and getting reinforcements in this Bullpen just every other arm would be helpful Josh bores I think is you know probably less than a week away from coming back he’s pitched four times in his rehab assignment with Roundrock he pitched on the 16th then he pitched three days later then he pitched three days later then he pitched 3 days later so I’m thinking on Friday he will pitch yet again because the target date was around July 1 for Josh spores to be back and at that point the Rangers are probably gonna have to make a decision on some they’re gonna have to make a decision on somebody of who’s going down I think it might end up being Latz because he’s the only one that’s got some options that they’re not going to have to make a decision about you know longterm are we keeping this guy or are we cutting him I think that that is going to end up being the move and that will be why not because LZ hasn’t been better than Burke this season um or that he hasn’t been better than John Hernandez this season but in roster construction especially at this point it is so much about options and you know long-term View and you know putting off that decision of is this guy really that good or should we just cut bait and move on um it comes down to options so many times in the bullpen but hopefully adding him back will make this team even better having you know these games that go to Extra Innings this is the first Extra Innings game that the Rangers have lost this season they were 3 and0 heading into this game on Wednesday this was the first one that they lost where last year and the year before and pretty sure the year before that as well they were just absolutely abysmal in both one- run games and Extra Innings games because well the bullpen just was not very good this year that isn’t the case and losing a game two games this series because the guys in you both who had been reliable just happened to have bad days at the exact wrong time incredibly frustrating way to lose a series and get swept in a series but hey there’s there’s always that chance that things start to turn around soon I think this team is just too talented not to at least claw back to 500 at some point this season to get themselves in the mix to not be sellers at the deadline to not be you know here in a month saying hm I wonder who’s going to make the highest offer for Kirby Yates or for David Robertson or what’s going to happen with Andrew heene or if Max sherzer might end up being on the trading block I’d like to not be there I’d like to be saying okay who is this Rangers team gonna add the deadline are they going to add somebody are they gonna you know get Tyler M back around the deadline I’d like to be sitting here in a month saying okay what is the timeline for Jacob De Grom coming back looking like is is he going to be back for that final stretch is this team going to be in a position where it matters I’d like to think so even after a series like this there are some signs that things are turning around seeing that those great at bats from low as of late hitting the ball with authority driving at the opposite field driving in runs that’s a great sign for this offense I think he is so huge for them and him getting right would be so important for this offense Jaheim even though he is a catcher a switch hitting catcher offense from a catcher is a luxury a luxury that the Rangers had left last year which is why their offense was so good so getting Jonah Heim right and hitting for power would be great and getting just anything from the margins getting Marcus siman back on track getting you know things from the middle of this order Wyatt Langford staying hot adulas Garcia just absolutely need to get something more from adol Garcia there are signs that things are starting to turn around but uh this series in Baltimore it’s going to be really tough but it’s going to be really crucial for this team starting to feel good about themselves heading into deciding whether they’re going to be sellers or buyers at the trade deadline in just around a month that’s going to do it for today’s show thank youall so much for listening and subscribing and until next time don’t forget to enjoy World Series champion Texas Rangers baseball

The Texas Rangers have missed nearly half a season from Josh Jung and desperately need his bat back in the lineup. Ezequiel Duran has struggled to hit for power, as has most of the lineup, so Chris Young optioned Duran to AAA and called up Derek Hill. But will this spark change from a scuffling offense?

  1. I don't think duran is in the rangers long term plan they should trade him so he can play every day. Lowe and heim has one good game outa 8 games and they don't get sent down.

  2. If CY ditched every hitter who has stunk this year, there would be no right fielder or center fielder and every ball hit there would roll to the wall. Every throw to first base on an infield grounder would go into the dugout because there would be no first baseman. The umpire would get hit on every pitch because there would be no catcher behind home plate. It's odd that Duran is the scapegoat. Duran has played part-time and has not had the opportunity to stink as bad as the rest of the lineup. The move is indicative of what few options CY has. The team already has the sixth highest payroll at $231 million. Credit the Orioles who are 20 games above .500 with the second lowest payroll in MLB. Brice, you might want to rid your apartment of all sharp objects. The Rangers are about to get bitch-slapped (again).

  3. I dont get it! I thought we would be around 500 with this team, but i thought we would be losing games like 10-8, or 8-7. I thought we would score, just not enough. The pitching has been fine! What in the hell happened to our bats?

  4. Did anyone else wonder why, in the 4th with 2 outs, Hill felt he needed to dive for an obvious single and give the Brewers the run to tie the game? Did anyone else wonder where Garcia was? Isn’t he supposed to be running to back up the center fielder? He came way too late.

Ok. There are 82 games left. We are 37 – 43. To have a chance at the playoffs we probably need to get to 85 – 77. That means we need to go 48 – 34. That’s winning about 58%. Only about 5 teams are playing at that level now. What chance do the Rangers have of getting to 85 wins?

  5. Bochy's unnatural love for Grossman became painfully evident in the playoffs when he persisted in batting him 3rd. Grossman went 2 for 19 with 9 strikeouts. When they didn't re-sign him and the worst team in baseball (White Sox) signed him to a minor league deal, I thought I'd never have to see him again. Lo and behold, he came back and Bochy wasted no time inserting him third again, or in the case of last night, second. Good thing they sent Duran down so they have room for Grossman on the roster. Unbelievable.

  6. Very on point today, sir.

I agree, Duran was completely treated as a scapegoat. Weird timing too, as it would make more sense if Jung had been activated. But he wasn’t. So…

  7. So like um that loss against the Brewers was a win but the Umpire took it away basically. With two outs in the bottom of the third and with a 1-2 count Eovaldi actually struck out the batter it was in the strike zone but the Umpire called it a ball. It later turned into a walk and then the next batter up to the plate hit a grand slam and that is why the Rangers lost 5-6 instead of winning fairly 5-1. It's just sad. Hopefully the Rangers can just go on a tear and go on a crazy win streak or win a bunch of series in a row to get back in the postseason picture because this just sucks
