  1. GMBM definitely doing a lot to make this team more competitive. Another solid middle 6 winger added!

  2. $5.8 million and UFA next offseason. Either a rental or someone they hope to sign long term (hopefully for less).

    Not a bad deal though

  3. I wonder what our lineup will be now. Does he essentially replace Mantha?

Edit. He’s LW. Mantha is RW.

Our LWs are ovi, mangi, Milano, and malenstyn.

  4. I’m much happier with him in the middle six than some of our existing options.

    Ovi, PLD, Wilson
    Milano Strome Mangiapane
    LaPierre McMichael Protas
    Malenstyn Dowd Sutter

And wait for Miro and Frank to battle for roster spots in the middle six?

Honestly I still think we need a scoring winger unless Milano stays healthy and breaks out. And I am assuming Oshie goes to LTIR.

  5. I really like this but I’m starting to get annoyed with where the fuck lap is supposed to play. He’s shown everything he needs to for a real spot locked in but now our center aa jd wven wing spots seem crowded.

    Not accurate but roughly

    Ovi strome wilson
    ? Pld ?oshie
    Mag mcmicheal ?
    Protas dowd ?

I’m sure I’m forgetting something super obvious but just frustrated for lap, anyone else feel this way?

  6. 40 points in 75 games played with a +7 on the year last season.

    I’m very excited about this

  7. We trade bums for draft picks at the deadline… to trade draft picks for bums in the offseason?

  8. I like this. Better than we have. Didn’t give up much to get him. Can get out of the contract in a year (or flip him at the deadline if that helps the Caps more).

Don’t sweat where everyone will fit on the ice, there is more to come from GMBM, plus LTIR decisions (this foreshadows Oshie maybe?), injuries during the season where we need more depth, etc. This move helps the Caps without mortgaging the future in any way. Judge GMBM on the final product not on snapshots of the mid-off-season roster.

    Also, Fuck the Pens.

  9. Another overpaid “I can fix him” player… great now I see why they bought capfriendly so the fans won’t see how horrible their contracts are for next year

  10. Decent middle 6 guy, can score goals, plays bigger than his actual size.

Not worth 5.8 million, but he’ll make you more competitive instantly.

His last name essentially means “eat bread”

Summary of what you need to know.

  11. I think this signals too they’re drafting D or C in the draft, Chernyshov was linked to the caps in some drafts but I think it is now likely Solberg/Jiricek/Yakemchuk (if he falls that far)/ Hage or MBN

  12. Flames fan here: Mangiapane is an extremely weird player, but I feel pretty confident that the down year was an outlier. He’s fast, skilled, and seems like he’s so close to putting it all together. I don’t think he fit the system at all and a change of scenery will do good for him. I think this is a good trade for you guys.

  13. In my earlier comment I said don’t judge GMBM on the mid-off-season roster and I stand by that.

But here’s what we’re looking like at this exact moment coming into camp:
    **FORWARDS**
14 F (Ovi, PLD, Wilson, Mangiapane, Oshie*, Strome, Protas, Milano, Down, Sgarbossa, McM, Laps, Miro, Malenstyn**)
+ 6 Hersey F for camp. 1+ could impress to stay (Funk, Sudz, Cristall, Rybinski, Trineyev, Hofer, Perrson)
    **DEF**
9 D (Carlson, Sandin, Jensen, TvR, Marty, Bear, AA, Iorio, and H-A**)
    **GOALIES**
    2+G (Chucky, either Shepard/Stevenson)
**LTIR** = Backstrom (and maybe/probably Oshie now?)
    * maybe Oshie to LTIR
** decision TBD on re-signing RFAs Malenstyn and/or H-A. Assuming they will re-sign McM.

I still see GMBM making moves, esp. to thin out the D-core (Jensen, Bear, and/or TvR) to free up funds, potentially bringing in a veteran back-up goalie, and even making a trade to bring in a top line D if possible.

For the draft I think we’re leaning towards best player available but if all things even we’ll bring in more d-men.

  14. Always been a fan of Mangiapane, he’s young enough that he should still have some good-to-great years in him if he fits well. I like this move if Oshie is out, which seems like the more likely outcome. And even if Oshie is back, we can afford it, it just leaves things a little crowded.

I had been hoping they take a chance on someone younger like Kaliyev, but there’s something to be said for mixing in someone with experience and a track record of high level play.

  15. If we gonna be wasting a 2nd round pick for 1 year of a 29 year old, wouldn’t it be better to trade a 1st for the rights to a younger player in Necas??
