Connor Hellebuyck on winning the Vezina Trophy | Winnipeg Jets press conference

[Music] Winnipeg sports talk live from Las Vegas presented by Kolb you didn’t get you didn’t get a chance to celebrate this in 2020 what’s it like to be able to really celebrate it you know this event yeah you know it was nerve-wracking just making sure I didn’t miss anyone this time I forgot my uh my summer goalie poach and got a lot of crap for it so I want to make sure I didn’t miss anyone in t to me what does the award mean to me to you in general just just being recognize all the good boys you know it’s an honor I just know growing up my whole goal is to be best in the world so um this is a stepping stone for and that’s not something that’s just given or awarded it’s it’s earned every single day so um for me it feels feels like I’m doing something right join it’s some pretty Elite company of two time winners what does that mean you joining that list guys wanted before you you to be honest it really hasn’t sunk in yet oh if I had to be fully honest like like it’s kind of a stepping stone for what I’m trying to be is best in the world so like I was saying it was kind of showing me I’m doing something right and I had a lot of people around me that have been helping me along the way so I know it feels good for them that they’re doing right with me as well and I look forward to celebrating with all those people Conor congratulations when you look back at this season it was a great one individually and for your team what are you most proud of personally as well as from a team perspective you know I think we made really big strides this year I think we changed our identity a little bit we brought like a solid winning philosophy to Win It Peg and I think our fans bought in and I think our team bought in and yeah and just that all around buying I’m pretty proud of that has your dad been having a good time being here with you did it look like he was of course he is he he loves SP of Stu it’s nice to have like kind of this time you couldn’t do that last time where you had like have people with you and kind of enjoy seene yeah exactly you know said it perfectly is having those guys around and I think they might enjoy it more than I do just cuz you’re not around this every single day and I at least play the game so I get a touched it here and there but you know just having them around it means the world to me because I really wouldn’t be here without them Conor when you were a kid what made you want to be a gold I know crazy idea huh um I I think it was when I was younger my brother would he’s a year older than I am and um he would always shoot on me and I had a knack for stopping pucks and I kind of enjoyed it so I think I just kind of gravitated towards it and I was okay at it so I wanted to do it more and more your parents are okay with it I think they just wanted me to do whatever I want and and that’s the same plus to my kids and it’s a great lesson they taught me and um you got to love what you do and how much is coaching and go tender technique change your time say as I I don’t know how how much it’s changed we calling it just a big change I think it’s slowly tweaked every year I think the game is changing in front of us and you got to continue to adapt with it’s no big change it’s no nothing mindblowing but there’s little things and that’s reading the game differently that your changes every year your fell finalist I’m not sure how much you got to see but the season that c Bros you had in the playoff run kind your thoughts on he’s a great golender and had a great run and you know he could just as well be up here um so yeah hats off to him what you think of Paul marce saying on television as he did that he hopes when pi jet can do it well I agree with him his well but for Paul to like call you guys out and show you guys out did tell that gesture he would I summer look like for you talk about the disappointment at the end of the year after strong regular well we just settled in um kind of washed out everything that I needed to figure out and now I just started skating and kind of ramping it back up for another year and you know there’s only one thing left on my mind and that’s the Stanley Cup so anything I can do to get there I’m going to start doing it how much playoffs did you watch do you watch after you’re out uh well having two kids to and younger is kind of hard to get a children’s movie off the TV but um I I kept good tabs and and I watch a game here and there so yeah sometimes it’s heartbreaking cuz you’re not in it and it looks extremely fun and I want to be part of that but on the other hand it’s you’re seeing guys achieve their dreams so it’s pretty cool so you win the vzna in Vegas the day before the first ever Las Vegas NHL draft so like just from afar how have you seen this Market grow as a hockey City know I think they’ve really embraced it here you can tell when we come to play here and they have an amazing atmosphere and the fans are so loud and they’ve really embraced it here so you know it’s it’s great for the league and it’s great for the game you obviously played McKinnon in the playoffs and in the division in the regular season your whole career did you feel like he reached another level individually this season just from facing him those bunch of times yeah I mean the wards should speak for themselves he is a phenomenal player and he does have a a stronghold on the game and uh I think he continues to get better and you know that’s what you want to see out of your Elite guys how badly do you want to represent the us at the you know I haven’t really put any thought into that um that time will come when I will start thinking about that but I think what’s next the four nations is coming up this year so I think that’s first on the list and you know I’d really love to be on the roster and well if if I am I’ll be honor you mentioned want to be the best goalie in the world when did when did that come was that before the NHL or when you were in you thought okay now that’s my I think that work ethic came around my junior year of high like right where around before I was just enjoying the game and loving the game but then I had a Down Season and I remember watching my brother try to make junior hockey and and watching how much dedication he put into the offseason and and skating every day and I think that’s when it finally clicked for me that I need to put everything I got into this and there’s no plan me be like be UA July 1 corter I mean give him any advice as he looks for his new team what advice I I don’t think I’ve ever been down that road um I know I I know he’s a phenomenal guy and phenomenal goenda resign oh it’s very exciting um I made sure to text him and let him know our kids can now hang out a little bit more and um our kids get on Grace so I’m really thrilled for him and his family know what better you taking over as head coach first time talk to you sincec yeah no it’s very excting yeah the phone call I had was very encouraging I want to know how B and I am and how much I’m looking forward to have M coach us hey Conor what are the chances that they have on a YouTube video Coming Up 3D printing some more trophies are you trying to blows up any bigger I don’t think he needs it though he that’d be kind of cool all con I know people at the the rank next would like be a good giveaway yeah he has 3D printed a miniature Stanley Cup when we were younger so I’m not much out it but yeah that’s pretty cool guys again thank you with Mory and de obviously a great pair what do you see from between the pipes cuz I assume that plays into him resigning you got that that kind of big pair yeah you know I just think the world of my teammates so they did a phenomenal job this year and having those two guys be the centerpiece up the our back or depends how you look at it for me it’s up there um they just they they control the game and they do so much for us out there and I’m I’m really thrilled to have him back he C actually K just mention Scott arneal coming taking over how will you look back at the two years and the growth of the team under Rick Bowes menion one you know I think Rick is an elite coach I think what he did for us is going to make my career I truthfully believe that he has really helped get the best out of me and the best out of our team and I hope I know Arie is aligned with a lot of the things that he says and has done for us so I’m really excited about future but Rick has done a phenomenal job with the guys in our room and you know I I think the most of them there as a player how hard was it to vote for the Lindsay this particular year and what was it like to face um the kid this year we I he’s an elite player he keeps H your toes anytime he’s on he’s on the ice and you can’t take a shipped off and you got to know where he is so um yeah this year was difficult there’s a lot of guys that could T way have won it and and hats off damn
