OMG the Vibes with this New York Mets Team Are Special

it is the song of the summer for the New York Mets sing it with me oh my God you are locked on Mets your daily New York Mets podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hello to all you uh Maze and Mets fans you’re watching locked on Mets part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day I’m her Ryan finlin if you want to find any of my work follow me on xfin Ryan you can also find some my writing at just baseball.com where I work as the managing editor this episode of lockon Mets is brought to you by booking.com booking doya the right stay can make you a fan of any City even your Rivals check out booking.com for your stay today Thursday night the New York Mets held an event and I’m not really sure what the entire event was about but what we saw on social media was a bunch of videos of Jose glaus debuting his song to everyone at that party and The Vibes were unbelievable you see a glacia singing and then Pete Alonso in his allwhite suit comes dancing over and he’s singing with the glaes then all the teammates come out you could watch that video 20 times look at each different guy in the mix whether it’s seino DJ Stewart JD Martin the almost the entire team is there and they are all having a blast on the dance floor as a glacius is singing this song and it’s crazy to see the transformation of the New York Mets over this past month and it shows you the roller coaster that is any baseball season but it also gives you hope that there’s something special brewing with the New York Mets and they’re going to give us a really exciting ride this Summer that will be Unforgettable I really hope so I’m not saying hey win the World Series I’m saying hey keep me entertained for six whole months and the have done that this year on both ends of the spectrum so far you go 0 and five to start horrible everyone is jumping off the bandwagon before the rides even started then you go 12 and three over 15 games everyone’s right back on Francisco Alvarez gets hurt Mets go 10 and 25 over the next 35 games fall way below 500 Jorge Lopez is the boiling point he throws the glove into the stands there a players only meeting the worst bleeping like all of it all of it in that that one game just gave you a huge Turning Point the meeting you know puts the the Mets in a position to have a little more accountability in that Clubhouse they make some roster moves Christian Scott and Brett batty they go down they bring up Jose glacius and Danielle Nunes Nunes helps solidify the back of the bullpen and at the time when a glaas comes up it was this great story right journeyman who was out of baseball the last year out of the majors I should say he was working in the minor leagues to improve his game to prolong his big league career he’s back it’s a great Feelgood story when he first meets with the media he talks about his song oh my God OMG this song that he’s going to be releasing this summer and it’s just a footnote at the time but if you were to at some point not that the Mets are going to win the World Series but if you were going to create a World Series DVD type style of documenting this season that moment would be something that you would put up there oh my my song is coming out and then you would flash to the music playing at City Field when the Mets hit a home run or maybe you grab a video of the Mets celebrating in the clubhouse after a win because now after every win that’s how they celebrate and those little things it it’s that secret sauce in baseball something you’re playing for it it’s four to three in the ninth inning and yeah you want to win the game anyway but that draw to get another OMG party in that Clubhouse locks the guy in a little extra degree and he gets the big hit it’s just the overall Vibes and they’re contagious in baseball just like hitting’s contagious you look at this Mets team right now and despite how great they’ve been playing they’re at 500 they’re they’re 39 and 39 and as we know with a roller coaster you could say just based on the law of averages a team that is 15 and four in their last 19 games is due for a dip at some point it might be this upcoming series against the a we’re going to preview that they are really hot too but once you start to find that special something you can take off as a team and maybe there isn’t another dip maybe the dip is playing 500 baseball but there’s more stretches where the Mets rear off five in a row win five straight Series this team is special right now and it’s crazy that Jose glaz is a guy that you couldn’t possibly take off this roster I don’t care if Brett Bay hitting 450 in Triple A can’t take him off the roster to bring up batty okay even if Louisa hunia has earned a promotion and you think he should be your backup infielder you can’t do it you’re better off eating a ton of money and DFA Jeff mcneel than ever getting rid of a glacius and The Vibes he’s brought to this Clubhouse for the rest of this season he has earned his place I was talking with my dad the other day about the 2015 Mets we were going over you know wanner rebe and Kelly Johnson when those guys came in and joined the team and I was actually looking at that season actually after our conversation like is 2015 similar to 2024 it’s not really because that team was just sort of 500 all year and then they exploded in they 20 and8 in August and won the division off the back of that really then that team was predicated on pitching this once on hitting but there is something to be said about finding that right combination of guys whatever it is and once that formula is ironed out and you find the pieces things can roll from there so the Vibes with the New York Mets right now it’s special and whether it’s a rain delay where you see you know PE fans just doing crazy stuff whether they’re chugging beers in the rain or Grimace is standing over the people chugging beer I mean it’s just it’s fun it’s crazy and yes I have talked against the Grimace thing a little bit because it’s about the players and it’s about what they’re doing and it’s a lot more than Grimace but you know what having fun at the Ballpark having the fans in it the Empire State Building being lit up purple all of this stuff happens when your team is good and it just makes for an exciting summer so one way or the other we’ll see where this season ends up going but oh my God being the song of the summer is not something any of us could have expected a month ago even but here we are and it is a ride that I think you just hope never stops so we’ll see where this team ends up going and there’s still questions right there’s still questions about the rotation the bullpen finding the right combination in those two parts but I look at what this team does have and I’m optimistic between the top four in their lineup with nmo and Lindor sorry Lindor and then nmo and then Martinez then Alonzo the way that combination can be consistent and ignitable with Francisco Alvarez and Mark vantos coming into their own with Harrison Bader being as good as you could have even expected he he has lived up to any Loy expectations and maybe even exceeded them and really the only question marks our second base with VI king of glacius and Jeff mcneel who if you believe in positive regression is due to be a lot better than he has been and then the right field question mark with Marte injury but I I I think this is a team that can answer a lot of those questions so we’re going to go through that throughout the show because the Syracuse Mets are 48 and 29 on the season so I want to talk about what reinforcements can still come from there that’s going to be our last segment but our next one here is to preview this upcoming series because you have a team that has had a similar story arc this year with the Houston Astros that has an even better track record is this the team that slows the Mets down we’ll talk about that in a series preview next first partner of Major League Baseball stay up to date with all the latest in the World of Sports by checking out lockon sports today streaming 247 on YouTube the Houston Astros have been very similar to the New York Mets this year they started off 0 four they finished April with a 10 and9 record they were 12 and 24 on May 8th they then won eight of nine games flashing a potential to be a good team getting themselves to five games under but then they closed that may with a stretch where they lost eight of 13 went right back down they were 25 and 33 heading into the month of June since then they’re 15 and seven they have the second best record in baseball trailing only the Mets by one in the Lost column whoever wins this series gets the title for best team in the month of June and we’ll also get to maintain a record over 500 because up to this point each of these teams literally just got back to 500 heading into this series so that’ll be short Liv for one of them and then of course throughout the month of July they can climb well above that if they both play to the standards that they have reached in June it’s been pretty crazy to see the Astros go through this because I think the Mets did not have expectations this year so seeing them lose games not surprising seeing a dynasty potentially being on their way out crumbling that’s going to make you take notice and there’s been a lot dialogue about what would the Astros do with the trade deadline would they have the stomach to sell because Alex bregman is hitting free agency after this season Justin berlander could potentially be hitting free agency after this season interesting to note on that one for you Mets fans berlander hurt right now and not that you ever want to celebrate an injury but the New York Mets do have something to be paying attention to with Verlander because if he can’t reach 140 Innings pitched this year Club option that the Mets put into his contract that comes off the table that’s big for the that’ss because they owe him $17.5 million of that $35 million Club option the Astros desperately want him to get to that number because it’s a cheap contract for Verlander next year otherwise he becomes a free agent and maybe the two sides settle on a new deal but that that is one way that the Mets are sort of keyed into what’s happening with Verlander but regardless you look at where this Astros team is right now they have climbed their way back into the conversation where you don’t have to worry about trading bregman or verland where they might be big buyers to the deadline although I don’t know how much they have left to sell from their farm system but this is not a team that’s going to go away lightly and throughout this past month they have a good offense they’re seventh best when it comes to Ops the mats had the best OPS in baseball as a team and then their pitching has somehow scrapped it all together figured it out and now they are sitting with the best RA in the American League this month third best in all of baseball the Mets are 10th best they’re half a run behind the Astros when it comes to ER in the month of June and they’re doing this with four active pitchers on their 40-man roster who are starters everybody else in their 40-man roster who’s a starting pitcher is hurt they got ronell Blanco Fran baldez Hunter Brown and Spencer erag Getti erti is the only weak spot in that rotation because Hunter Brown has been unbelievable lately over his last think it’s seven starts he has an erra sub to yeah it’s a 147 ER his last seven starts with a 0.88 whip Hunter Brown was a rookie last year First full season had his struggles started off this year continue to struggle but he’s 25 years old really talented now seems like he’s figuring it out and that’s been a big reason for their turnaround meanwhile you have Blanco this guy that they just discovered out of nowhere who has a 234 ER so far this season eight and2 record and 14 starts 097 win and then you have Valdez who’s actually been the worst of those three but still has the track record of being their Ace those are the arms I expect to see this weekend Blanco and Valdez have been announced Sunday starter is still listed as TBD but it’s either going to be a bullpen game or Brown and Brown would be on full rest because they had an off day on Thursday so I imagine we see Hunter Brown for that final game the Mets are going to roll out Jose canana uh that will be starter on Friday night Francisco Alvarez will be behind the dish and I say that because you look at the splits this year for the Mets two veteran left-handed pitchers and for sha manah when he has Alvarez behind the dish he has a 163 ra and 27 and two third Innings pitched against the rest or not against with the rest of the Mets catchers 518 ER and 48 and two3 Jose Katana 225 ER in 28 Innings with Alvarez 586 ER with the other catchers so those two lefties in particular expect Alvarez to remain behind the dish whenever they’re on the mound we’ll see that on Friday with the off day who knows if Alvarez even gets a day off in this series they’re gonna have to rest him at some point probably actually Sunday would be his off day because Luis srino has like throwing to Lis Teran so I imagine that would be one outing that we’d see Terran out there for but you look at the first two games with canana going up against Blanco and then Valdez going up against Miguel the Mets probably at the disadvantage when it comes to the pitching matchup but Alvarez can change that he he really is a A Difference Maker behind the plate and he gives his guys more confidence so hopefully we see some of that early on in this series and honestly you see a good pitcher up against the Mets you feel good right now because this lineup can get hot against anyone so ronal Blanco’s got a two three four year in this season has been unbelievable maybe this is his blowup start the Mets can win one of those first two games I feel very comfortable with srino pitching in a rubber match we saw that work out well for the Mets last Sunday hopefully that happens again or maybe you’re not even the position where it is a rubber match maybe the Mets have really taken care of business early on and kept those Good Vibes rolling but right now this is must-watch television anytime the Mets play and against a team like the Astros that comes in red hot off a seven game winning streak who has a very similar Arc this month it should be a fantastic series I cannot wait to watch it now to close out the show today we’re going to talk about the Syracuse Mets are there any reinforcements that can come up to help this Bullpen or this rotation on the pitching side and I’ll also Spotlight a couple of other top arms in this system for our Friday farm Report we’re gonna get to that in just a minute first though a word from our sponsors today’s episode is brought to you by game time game time is the fast and easy way to and 29 record this season that’s the best record in their division of the triaa international league it’s pretty crazy because you look at the Northfolk Tides with all those top prospects the Orioles have and here are the Mets with a better record and why that’s important because the Mets have a mix of some prospects but a lot of veterans that are there in Triple A and that gives them a a wealth of talent that they can tap into it gives them depth yeah you could say all right well if they’re crushing triaa pitching what’s that mean Jose glacius has come up and he has been a Difference Maker for this Met’s team maybe Ben gaml is the next guy that provides something coming up from Syracuse Danielle Nunes Danny Young some of these guys have come in and played a nice role in the bullpen so I do think that there is a lot of talent there that has led to a lot of winning at that level and that’s just a good thing to see moving forward speaking of the specifics though let’s go into the arms that could help the Mets Dom Hamill had a great start on Friday maybe a good start but great by his standards for this season he went seven Innings that’s a huge huge step nine strikeouts dig give up three earned runs but that is a really good start for Hamill I don’t necessarily expect to see him this year but is there a world where the New York Mets are looking for an impact arm in their Bullpen and they decide to convert him and see what he has there’s a world I don’t think so I more wanted to just point out he had a really good start tonight a guy that I struggled to find those Jose budo and Christian Scott are the two names that could most impact the Mets this season budo has made six quality Stars between the majors in tripa this year out of his 14 starts if you look at the modern day quality start so if you say three earned runs or less in five innings Jose budo adds five more starts to that list so 11 of his 14 starts he has gone at least five has allowed three earned runs or less that is an on they can call on at any time and he could improve this rotation or at least keep it where it is if you replace a mill or a Peterson with a buo I don’t think you skip a beat so that’s really good depth to have the Houston Astros would kill to have Jose budo on their team right now they would because they desperately need pitching so that’s a nice piece and honestly not that I want the mats to trade Jose budo because I think that he has some value to them at this deadline like if you had to make a move to get something you never know a guy like Jose budo might give you more than you’d expect because a team might need a starter to plug into their rotation as a guy that can eat some Innings down the stretch and also he comes with a ton of control it might get a good Prospect for a guy like budo not that I want the mess to deal him but it’s just food for thought Christian Scott has a 212 ER since going down a triple A that’s always an option the Mets can go to whether that’s keep him in their rotation or who knows maybe as they taper off his Innings they play with them out of the bullpen I personally would like to see him just remain as a starter right out this season even if it is a triple A get your innings in do your work get ready because 2025 Christian Scott should be part of the opening day rotation and Hope F can be on a fiveman rotation at that point and be a Difference Maker so the most important thing to me on Christian Scott is building up those Innings last year he was just shy of 90 Innings get him over 120 this year that’s all I really care about but still a lot of those Innings can still take place in the big leads he can be an impact arm for the Mets and then on the relief side you got Matt Festa who was signed on a minor leag deal at the end of May in Syracuse he has a 176 ER with 19 strikeouts and 15 in the third innings pitch that’s across 11 appearances so he’s going multiple Innings sometimes Festa is an option for the Mets at some point it’s not on the 40 but the Mets can make some 40 Man spots if they just take books rayy put them on the 60-day iil grant harwig just had knee surgery you could put him on the 60-day iil there’s ways the Mets can maneuver things to add some arms to this Bullpen during this stretch with that Diaz Festa is definitely a name to watch as is Max cranic he was a starting pitcher and he’s now been moved at to to a relief role in Syracuse is they have a lot of prospects taking up those starts over his last 30 days cranic has appeared in eight games he has 16 strikeouts in 13 and a third Innings pitch and his whip is 0.75 only two walks in 13 and the third Innings so cranic is a guy that could call up be a multi- inning sort of Swiss Army Knife Guy very interesting arm the Mets have right now just sitting in Triple A and then you have Josh Walker who we’ve seen this year but he’s been lights out this month 14 strikeouts and seven excuse me seven and a third Innings pitch if his erra was Zero over 17 and a third Innings that would have been more impressive but the 14 strikeouts in seven of the third Innings that’s also very impressive to strike out that many batters he’s only allowed one hit in those seven appearances so Josh Walker I imagine we see him at some point soon here and then wilin Ramos I talked about him the other day a guy that was called up from double had really great numbers there he’s getting close so that’s another arm they could potentially go to here now Spotlight a couple of top prospects who made really good starts this week you have Brandon Sprout coming off a Down Start we gave up four runs well no earned runs in this one six Innings pitched on Thursday in dou a five hits allowed two walks again no earned runs three strikeouts only 88 pitches to get through those six Innings Brandon Sprout is speci special there’s a world where he comes up this year in a relief role too if they really wanted to um just put the best arms possible on this team down the stretch maybe more likely than not though I’m I’m on the same wavelength as far as how I feel like the Met should handle Scott same thing with Sprout next year Christian Scott Brandon Sprout they both could be in an opening day rotation at the Mets wanted to and if not on Sprout very soon after that this guy is going to make starts in the big leagues next year I am sure of it and he could be a really great pitcher that could help this team for years to come another guy that could be of that same caliber is jonatan who is starting to figure out high after going through some struggles once he got promoted which is fair I I mean the kid is still young what is he 20 years old 21 years old now oh yeah I think I I think I talked about this last week he celebrating his 21st birthday so he just turned 21 and in his start on Thursday he struck out 11 he went six Innings L three hits one earned run one walk he has a 169 over those last three starts as I mentioned he he’s a really good Prospect for this Mets team and moving forward to have Sprout and Tong that gives you some guys to Dream On guys that it’s not just oh he can be a starter in the big leagues it’s potentially oh he can be a Frontline starter in the big leagues the Mets haven’t developed a lot of those guys since the last time they went to the World Series in 2015 now you’re starting to see that level of a core come up maybe not quite that level because Harve deg Grom wheeler that was pretty special Steven mats Noah inard that’s once in a generation type stuff to have that many guys come up and pitching is very fragile because between generation K and then whatever we’re calling the 2015 Mets those guys can crumble on you but it’s having guys at each level of the farm system that makes things so exciting when you talk about the future of the New York mats because you have arms that could make an impact 2025 arms that can make an impact in 26 27 28 goes all the way down the line and they are developing pitching much better than they have in years past and that leaves you very optimistic that they can be a wealth of pitching year over-year that they can tap into whether it’s on the trade market or for themselves at the big league level I feel really good about where the Mets are at in this farm system and then again when it comes to helping out the roster this year there are plenty of arms in Syracuse and even a couple in bigton that could help put this team over the top I don’t want to see the Mets trading for rentals this year to help their Bullpen or to help their rotation I I don’t want to see that so to take this team that looks really good put them over the top I actually believe that internal development could be that Finishing Touch to this team we’ll just see where exactly it comes from anyway that’s going to be all for today’s edition of lock on Mets we keep the show rolling throughout the weekends so I’ll be back with the Saturday show break breaking 1. I have to take a moment to apolagize and give you credit. I made fun of you and took digs at you for your optimism on this team when they were at their worst. When Lindor looked like garbage, and Nimmo, and your desire to keep Pete, and to not think about trades. You stayed positive and you were right. As i look back im seeing that perhaps our struggles came with legitamate excuses, like JD's late start, Senga out for aling time, Alvarez gets hurt, the lineup reshuffling, Mendoza as a Rookie Manager, and Sterns patiance to let things play out like the battle at 3rd base with Mark and Baty, whether to get help at 2nd base, and sticking with Houser. Not to mention Diaz's struggles . All this combined had huge parts in our embarrasement. Now it looks like everything is starting to come up to the cooking temps and they're heating up. I hope this is the real indication of who they are. LFGM !!!!!
