Posting a random Steeler every day until kickoff or I forget – Day 113: Mike Henry

LB Mike Henry (1959-1961)

The Steelers chose Mike Henry with the 100th overall pick in the 1958 NFL Draft out of USC, where he was Second-Team All-PCC in 1957. Henry played in Pittsburgh for three seasons, appearing in 34 games and starting in 20. He recorded 3 interceptions and 3 fumble recoveries for the black and gold. After leaving the Steelers, he spent three more seasons in the league with the Los Angeles Rams.

While in the league, Henry also began a career in acting. He entered a contract with Warner Brothers in 1961, playing small roles in a variety of tv shows before playing the role of Tarzan in three separate movies in the 1960s. After his Tarzan success, he landed prominent roles in titles such as Smokey and the Bandit, The Longest Yard, The Green Berets, and several others. He also worked behind the scenes for many tv shows and films.

Henry was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and retired from acting in 1988. After years of complications from the disease, he passed away on January 8, 2021, at the age of 84.
