Network your Team every day so we are going to dig into the big picture stuff the Atkinson buyout the later picks um on our future shows coming up but we thought we would take a look at the first round pick the only first round pick that the Flyers made as well as those trades that GM Danny Brier made so let’s dig into jet luchenko because I’m going to say this because I feel like I have to I said it on the the little draft recap that got posted uh at the time of the pick and I picked jet luchenko for the Flyers as a reach pick for this team because something about him screamed Philadelphia Flyers and Danny Brier to me lo and behold they moved down a spot to pick him so you know Top Line what’s your reaction to the pit right so well my reaction to the pick was okay and I tweeted this I said all right it looks like you know they could get je buam or or constant helenus and they got neither now it is split in hairs if you want to talk about helenius and luchenko and and luchenko is a fine pick I still would have taken buo him uh I just think he was the better player on the board doesn’t have anything to do with jet luchenko and I hope people understand that it’s just where I have somebody ranked what I think that person will do uh I like I said I always feel like you can never have enough defense so whatever that’s that part of it that was my instant reaction now the interesting part was when he interviewed I had no idea that you know he had been through Philly before Kenneth Square family you know that’s nice so he has an idea of the area look he’s a very um conscientious and fun interview I knew that from the uh from the combine he’s a guy that came in just unbelievable physical shape at that combine I remember showing you a picture his arms were just I was like Wow on this guy 195 pounds this guy’s like solid as a rock so he he can handle the rigors of of the NHL and he’s obviously got speed and uh so yeah I see what they see in him and that’s fine I just would have taken the other player just because I feel like that other player had um it was just a a better player but it’s different position so they we knew it was going to be Center or defense right like we all knew that a lot of people so there there’s no mistaking that that was easy to figure out right and so he played for the uh G storm will continue to play for G over the next couple of years 74 points in 68 games definitely came on strong in the second half of the season and I think that he really imp ress me with his interview to your point I think he really knows who he is um he mentioned his work ethic and in terms of his dedication to working out in the gym which you noticed at the combine um ask a question yes well because I wanted to find out like how did you come in in such great shape like I really did and so yeah yeah uh but that you know he had had good conversations with the Flyers prior to the draft um you know both he and Danny talked about his good hockey IQ he creates a lot of space for teammates which I think is important in the center role Danny Brer was very confident that he would be in NHL Center that there wasn’t really talk about him moving out to the wing like you would with a lot of guys and it just seemed like in terms of sealing yes there are questions here you know and a lot of people have him projected as only like a third line with maybe second line potential but there’s so much certainty and so much confidence with him and and that Potential from the flyer side and from his own side that maybe he can break through that projected ceiling no I think he could he could be a second line I think those people just like a lot of people don’t know him and look I mean it’s just he’s one of those players that came on he came on an international play uh he was great in in the u8s and so all these things help I mean it just you know that’s what happens some guys have just great second halves and it really gets them on the board and it kind of springboards their career and so yeah they’re they’re catching the wave of that and so fans will love them you know he’s you know he’s played against some of the uh guys that they have like Denver Barky and Oliver Bon and so that’s good you know there’s so that’s you know so they’re they’re kind of building like a future core here which is what you have to do because by the time these guys get there a lot of what you see at the NHL level you know tends to leave retire whatever so yeah I mean that’s that’s what they’re doing they’re building yeah and the other thing um or the other couple of things that were brought up about him in his game is that he really has a strong two-way game and he’s a good skater and I think that you know there’s a lot of questions about some centers coming into the league and terms of their twoe two-way game you know at the junior level and skating is something we constantly talk about like oh they’re great except they have to work on their skating and you know you can always improve but it feels like jet is on the right path on both of those fronts which is something that’s really important no he is I he’s got a great foundation for that and that’s you know that’s important uh like you said you can teach that but when it’s innate and a guy’s already excelling in those areas that’s a that’s a great sign and that’s you know that’s those are couple of the things that it takes to to play in the NHL so yeah he’s got the makeup yeah I think so um Danny Brier did mention that a couple of teams gave him a little bit of crap for taking lenko ahead of them uh which you know may be a way to pump up the pick a little bit but also honestly I wouldn’t disagree like I think there was probably a lot a couple of teams right lower than them that thought that that’s the pick that they would have to make and were kind of attached to it but the Flyers kind of snaked him out of there I think there’s some of that but if we want to play both sides of that um oie yenin stated about helenus that he thinks he might be able to play in the NHL this year and he’s very close to being NHL ready and he had nothing but great things to say about him so there’s that too and you know the sabes were not expected to get him there so you know you to show both sides yeah absolutely and I think yeah this is a calculated risk uh on Danny breer’s part um clearly the way he’s talked about it that jet luchenko was their guy I think once they couldn’t move up to the four five pick kind of area then Jet luchenko is their guy let’s be clear on know that’s you know you have to Pivot sometimes like Rost and friends you know yeah P oh my God but um yeah so I think you know all of that BL uh God the announcement of his name by Michael Buffer was fantastic I you know if if people were following me on Twitter I somebody had asked me like who’s going to be the next celebrity and I said well I saw Michael Buffer and that was about 40 minutes before he did it for Philly the only reason I saw Michael Buffer is because he was eating the free food so I just happen the downstairs I love that I love that so much yeah I would I would call it a second place to Seline Dion in terms of celebrity announcers but a very very good one definitely got on all the Highlight Reel so that’s pretty cool the selon thing was was was really like a moment like that was some yeah yeah especially given everything but also her connection to Vegas and you know having residency there and everything yes but uh yeah just a a phenomenal way to introduce jet luchenko to the Philadelphia Flyers organization a memory that I’m sure he will have and his family will have for the rest of their lives so that’s pretty cool um we are going to talk about those pick trades both trading down to 13 and trading the 32nd overall pick to the Oilers we’re going to get into that and what’s going on in Danny’s head with his strategy coming up next passion drive and patience the formula for winning championships is also what keeps your ride or die alive eBay Motors has everything you need to maintain your vehicle and level it up to Peak eBay guaranteed fit only available to us customers all right Russ so the big question here why the focus on 2025 and getting a ton of assets the Flyers now have 13 pits in the next draft yeah it’s clear that they you know they like what they see in that draft I’m not going to start evaluating 2025 so I’ve had a real chance to look at it and go over it because if I you know if I did all that in advance there are guys that got drafted here late in the first or not at all that were thought to be high pick so uh years before so I’m not going to do that but obviously they felt strongly about it but I think it’s more I think it’s more the they got the phone call they molded over an offer they looked at their board and maybe who they saw on their board they felt they could get in the second round but at that point I don’t think they knew about the Columbus keeping the pick uh I know that there was discussion at the table because I was watching but you know some of the live feed and I saw that and that’s what we’re going to miss by the way um in the future is we’re not going to get to see that discussion at the table where obviously you know Danny was asking what’s going on is this worth it what’s you know to give him the calculations on that and in the end I think they’re going to get a pick because you don’t know where exactly where Edmonton’s going to be they’re not going to be a lottery pick so that’s not an issue but they may not make the playoffs and if they don’t maybe they’re like you know 27th overall and then you’ve moved up five slots in another draft so I think I think from a calculation standpoint from that like the chess part of it it’ll check out I think that works would I have done it no yeah I think there was an opportunity to get a defenseman here especially given the the way the board went it was the second half of the first round was absolutely Bonkers I think in terms of the picks that were being made and that there was an opportunity to get a really good player but I also see what Danny was doing here and so the Flyers have three first round picks and three second round picks in next year’s draft and that’s a lot of draft Capital that can be used in a lot of different ways and yeah I I just think that that was the calculus that was made and we’ll see how it turns out I’m not willing to say it was good or bad at this point because we just don’t I’m not gonna say whether it was good or bad I’m just gave you my hon you know opinion would I have made a pick there yeah I would have but that’s okay it doesn’t mean it was the wrong move because there’s lots of positives to it and now maybe next year they’re going to set up for a trade of some sort and that’s fine yeah and you know so if you look at the combination of trading down to 13 uh with the wild getting that additional third rounder as well so it’s three in the first round three in the second round two in the third round I mean right that is a makings of like you know you throw that in with a player or something and you get something you need so that’s that has the makings of that yeah I think so so there you know there’s a lot of strategy going on here and clearly again the way the the bottom third I guess of that first round went there are so many quality players left that even at 51 the Flyers are going to get somebody they wanted at that pick yeah no question yeah so I I think you know as far as that goes the Flyers are in in decent shape uh for for that pick and then you know we’ll see what else happens I think they’re probably you know if they can’t move up or there’s somebody specific they want to get to the bottom of the second round maybe using third round picks um that’s maybe the only other move that’ll happen today but I guess we’ll see yeah we’ll see I mean you never know I mean today’s another day maybe they do use some of that and and get a higher second round it’ll it’s entirely possible yeah so we’ll see how that goes we’ll have more on jet luchenko and all the other picks on our Monday show stay tuned for that and more NHL draft content from us at lockon fers here on the locked on podcast Network your team every day I’m 1. I think like you were talking on the other show how the Flyers a couple years ago were preparing to be big but they went small I think that's what they're doing here is they're going small in the NHL is now big and then the NHL is going to change back to speed with the small guys so I think they're thinking a step ahead and maybe
