LIVE Baseball 🔴San Diego padres VS Boston Red Sox / June 29 / Mlb the show 24

s die Padres and the Boston Red Sox first pitch coming at you right after the break just about set to go now and on the hill Nick pavetta what should we keep an eye on here it’s always interesting to see how he utilizes all of his pitches and how many of those he has a good feel for in that given day when he’s right he’s really able to keep hitters guessing and all of his stuff seems to be coming out of the same arm slot the same tunnel and that can make life very difficult on his opponents ready to go now now it’s the second baseman Xander Bogarts the wi in the pitch swings through that one for strike one1 here’s the [Music] 01 wouldn’t chase that time and another ball just the third pitch of the night and already a little question on the strike zone of the Umpire in this one strike two and the rhander deals pcks and misses it’s a strike out oh that slider was way out of the zone and for me it just comes down to not seeing the pitch out of the hand not tracking it into the zone and then also being a little bit anxious not confident in your two- strike approach and so when a guy’s in that position you get him to commit early and a lot of times you get the swing and Miss as you did right there so with one down it’ll bring up Fernando tatis Jr there here’s a strike this guy who grew up in Big League clubhouses got to be a nice feeling singy when your father played in the big leagues and he passes down all that wisdom ta weights and that one fouled off yeah and beyond that all the other men in those club houses that sort of take you under their wing as a son or nephew and show you some of the tricks of the trade it’s just invaluable that type of experience swings and misses struck him out well anytime you can punch out the top two guys in a lineup to start an inning got to be feeling pretty good out there on the mound because when you think of just having a distraction table Setters on the base paths and all of a sudden you’re dealing with the number three hitter any distraction can cause you to serve up a cookie and instead of it being a solo shot it’s a two or three run Homer two down nobody on and that one Clips the [Applause] corner that misses now two and two got him strikes out the side to begin the game what a start three up three down for San Diego and now the Red Sox get their turn no score it’s Major League Baseball on the show back here at Fenway Today’s starting pitcher U darish Bo you don’t always know what to expect with this guy on the mound there are times he’s really good but that’s not always the case for me I want to see how aggressive he’s going to be out there we’ll see it right away if he’s pitching with confidence and if he is he should be just fine we go to the bottom of the first and stepping in is the Speedy jiren Duran the pitch and a good eye there darish a former Allstar he features a sinker a slurb a slider a for seamer and he occasionally uses a Cur and a foul ball and that one fouled off that’s a base hit just kind of sliced that one into [Applause] Center I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a [Applause] knock man aboard and here is des [Applause] and a foul [Applause] ball the pitch that one ripped right center field it bangs off the wall rounds third headed for the plate he will score and they take the lead one nothing picks himself up in RBI just a solid swing right there caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit those always feel [Applause] great now batting Tristan casus and that one just misses a ball and no strikes Des at second with nobody [Applause] out that’s a strike let’s see if he’s willing to use the whole field right here definitely pounding him away and another ball two and one now swinging a foul straight back here’s the two- two that’s ripped base head coming home he’ll score it’s two nothing well he wasn’t afraid to hit with two strikes I think he choked up a little bit maybe spread out but he got the job done right there [Applause] so now here’s the DH masataka [Applause] Yoshida nobody out runner at first Off the Mark there and that is ball one leftand hitter Waits on the ground could be two the flip on to Bogarts plenty of time at first that’s a double play got what he was looking for on the mound right there and his infielders took care of business pretty textbook execution between short and second to turn that into two outs Trevor story comes up to the plate right through there for a strike two out Bas is [Applause] empty and now it’s even up one and one rander kicks deals outside low and the count two and one wouldn’t chase that time back to- back breaking pitches away you get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you that he doesn’t want to challenge you so I think the confidence level is raised right here next offering is in for a [Applause] strike Red Sox already leading to Third and that should be extra bases around first digging for two throws to Second and he’s out cut down and that ends the inning top of the second here’s the cleanup hitter for the Padres Manny Machado petta goes 6′ 5 in 210 lb and he was drafted in the fourth round back in 2013 pitch misses there and that’s ball one foul ball there [Applause] and here it comes two one and Manny gets a piece the wi to the pitch gets a piece there we’ll do it again there’s a swing and a drive hops over the wall and that’s an automatic double that was loud contact and a no doubt doubled off the bat I didn’t know it was going to land in the bullpen though and he’s really improving his accuracy out there it’s almost like he tried to do it now here is Hung Kim and there’s a foul ball well Kim is one of those players that it’s just hard to take your eyes off of him and not many players in the 2023 World Baseball Classic had more fun than he did he hit a grand slam in a win against China and earlier in the tournament had a two Homer game delivered some special moments for Korea that one to First and he handles it himself for the out that’s a good piece of hitting right there it’s early but you still want to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score that’s exactly what happened so you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat base hit and a run into to score just so sound in his mechanics hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the [Applause] field man at first with one gone stepping in for San Diego jerks and [Music] proar that one fouled off tying Run is it first here at the top of the second run around the move cut on and missed throw a second ow usually when you see a team try to steal a base in the early Innings it tells you they want to be aggressive on offense try to force the defense to make plays and slow them down that’s exactly what they did right there so we’ll see if that caught stealing changes the offensive approach moving forward pitches in the dirt now one and two one and two and another ball struck k him out looking but they pick up one run on the RBI single and it’s now a 2-1 ball game you’re watching Major League Baseball on the show back here in Fenway and now the right fielder Willer aru right and the pitch ball one no strikes singi wasn’t very sharp in the first got hit around a little bit just wasn’t able to locate particularly well a lot of stuff for the fat part of the plate yeah boo he wasn’t fooling anyone it’s a tough place to be because it’s not always obvious what adjustments need to be made sometimes it’s location sometimes it’s being too predictable sometimes you’re tipping your pitches he’s going to need to figure it out quickly though time to check in our umpires Earl Hendrick calling balls and Strikes yeah well-liked umpire boo pretty consistent with his zone so if you’re familiar with him and how he works you won’t get too surprised by anything sometimes he’ll give a little bit off the corner but nothing too crazy at all let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here and there’s the automatic looks like he’s just sizing him up there really good pitch to hit but he took it all the way sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game that may be a Pitch that he turns on and he walked him well he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot hitter didn’t offer at it now he has somebody to worry about over at first here’s Tyler [Applause] O’Neal that one finds the Zone it’s 0 and one good approach right there you want to get something just a little higher that you can elevat stay out of that double play oh great stop on to Bogarts on to First double play great job on the mound Fielding his position and making a good throw to second to get the double play started far too often we see pitchers have a hard time with that throw but no issues right there that’s good practice paying off in a game and resulting in two big outs here’s the second basem V Grom outside swing and a ground ball up the middle that’s a base hit and that keeps the inning [Applause] going really nice job staying up the Middle with his approach he didn’t try to do too much with the pitch just shot it through the infield and stepping in for Boston Conor Wong in there at the knees and it’s O and one right through there for a strike perhaps not quite ready to hit first two pitches by him for a couple of strikes now back is against the walls going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly two outs swing and a miss struck him out had him way out front of the slur one left for the Red Sox they lead it 2-1 all set for the start of the inning and now the DH Matthew [Music] Batton petta back to work Clips the corner that’s strike [Applause] one just off the Inside Edge the pitch tried to check his swing there now it appeal to First yes he did that’s a [Applause] swing not even close there two and two spoils the two- strike pitch and he’ll see another kick sandal swings through that and it’s a strike out one out so digging in Jackson Merill and that’s in for a strike [Applause] [Applause] fouled off he was late one down base is empty ground ball left side whips it to casus two up two down now here’s Xander Bogarts now he was a strikeout victim his first [Applause] time and ball one and that one pulled foul [Applause] two down do ouch oh he’s only an outway from getting through the inning but he just lost control for a brief moment there it’s not the end of the world but don’t let one mistake turn into another get your focus back right here and that one fouled off the Padres down by a run we’re here in the top half of inning number three slider for a strike just a really nice slider down and in there he wants to get the hitter Thinking Fast Ball speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement and the pitch that’s way outside and it’s one and two pickoff mve to First bards Dives back I think you want to get a one-way lead be very aggressive in the secondary this hitter not a power guy so you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps scoring a ball in the Gap he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it Padres leave one they’re down two to one back here in Boston now batting jiren Duran feels like it’s less common today that you see a guy like this the speed component the contact component but lack of power the wine of the pitch that misses ball one I think baseball’s starting to understand that those guys are valuable like they once were they need them in this game today foul ball there [Applause] next offering is in for a strike struck Him Out Swinging Gass it right by him very frustrating right there as a speedy potential base runner when with two strikes you just struggle to put the ball in play you don’t even have to get a hit at that point you can help your team just by reaching on an error but some way got to find a way to shorten up the swing and put the ball in play next time and here is des just missed yeah and here’s a fun stat on davers he’s at his best when he’s hitting homers and doubles and by the time he was 26 years old Des already had over 150 home runs and more than 200 doubles he’s just the 15th player in baseball history with those kinds of numbers at that age and a foul ball one out base is empty swing and a miss and the count is one and two this guy’s got such a good Sinker as a hitter you’ve got to look up in the zone if you look down you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt next offering is down low swings through it and that’s a strike out task with one two and three to start this inning but no trouble so far I’m sure he’d love to strike out the side here make a little statement but you got to be composed in this spot focus on getting this next guy you got two good outs want to get the third one and avoid the middle of that lineup coming up with a base runner could become dangerous casus in the Box here lets that one go for a ball foul ball and a pitch and it is two and one two balls one strike wouldn’t chase that time [Applause] he swings and fouls one off and he deals on the ground and it goes just foul righty to the plate and there’s ball for oh he earned his trip to first right there it’s not easy laying off pitches that just missed the Zone like that and it’s a real discipline as well he’s put a lot of work into that aspect of his game and it paid off right [Applause] there Yoshida in the box now no balls in a strike casus leads off first with two down to the inning that Clips The Zone and that is strike two oh this guy is so comfortable hitting with two strikes even a good pitch early in the atat if he’s not ready to pull the trigger he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count and a swing and a miss and that’s that and the Red Sox leave one as they’re unable to add to their 2-1 lead back in Boston now here’s Jake cronenworth it’s interesting he plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well so when you’re looking at that position you’re not expecting someone this one’s into the Gap in left Center and that should be extra bases into second base the tying run is on with a lead off double well that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there just a cookie down the middle I mean those are the ones you dream about ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game right down the middle not a whole lot of velocity right on top of [Music] it Manny Machado up to the plate doubled in his first a that’s down and in a slider missed and it’s second swing and a miss and the count one and two as a pitcher you know the runner on second is ready to push things with his speed a base hit it’s probably going to be a big run so you really have to execute on the mount got him looking that a strike out frustrating end to the Adat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while you want to be ready to hit the fast ball sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there and the batter will be the short stop Hung Kim 0 for one he grounded out and his first it back sharp grounder that’s through for a base hit into third now so Runners at the corners and one out I’m sure he feels really good about that one smash that one through the infield for the knock when it’s hit that hard it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play Runners at the corners here one away and now the catcher comes up to hit Luis cusano that one’s in there o and [Applause] one Runners at the corners one away top half of inning number four and that’s off the Inside Edge and one and one that one at the knees for a strike big pitch right here he’s going to try to make a pitch it’s going to produce a strike out or a ground ball double [Applause] play two on one out got looking huge strike out there well they were pretty much giving it to him right there playing the infield back all you’re looking for on offense is a simple ground ball you got a tie ball game not sure what he was thinking up there strike out looking is the last thing you want to see now you got to hope the next guy can pick you up and come through with a big two out hit now batting jerx in [Applause] profar there’s the swing in a Miss well he’s been incredibly efficient in this one first pitch strike percentage over 70% that’s well above League average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up into this point Corners are occupied with two down next offering in there for a strike no balls two [Applause] strikes knocks that one away and we’ll do it again two on two outs definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside really think the outer half is open at the belt and fires on the ground to short story they take the force out and that is the inning Padre’s leave a pair and they Trail it here two to one and we’re back here at Fenway Park now it’s the short stop Trevor Story the pitch swinging a miss one one you know these Red Sox showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one they’re doing a good job of working the pitch count and they’ve been able to push a couple of runs across the score as well [Applause] still relatively early but with a pair of runs already on the board the ripple effect of that high pitch count might set him up to do more damage later in this game and that one is lifted in the air Mero makes the grab one down right so up next next Willer aru walked his first time you know singy they talk about Red Sox Nation but there is something to that because the Boston Red Sox aren’t just about Boston or Massachusetts it’s that whole New England area so you’re talking about Maine New Hampshire Vermont Northern Connecticut there’s a whole segment of the country that is locked in on the Boston Red Sox pitch to pitch throughout the summer kicks and fires and that’s a little bit high and it’s two and one they travel really well and I think Red Sox fans are sprinkled all over the country in the air left field profar has a beat on it and puts the squeeze on that one two away down left field Tyler oh dear two outs Bas is empty Tyler O’Neal will hit next 0 for one so [Applause] far first pitch and he just misses two outs hammers that one deep left field and forget it a gigantic blast and they tack one on the board it’s 3-1 that was blasted absolutely no doubt off the [Applause] bat a good hitter gets pitch recognition early he saw exactly where that was going to be the challenge not get over anxious and come out of your swing he stayed on it and got all of it so two down V Grom up next for the Red Sox and he’s already singled in this game and the pitch is outside ball one two down nobody on right through there for a strike one ball one strike on the ground of first and that one finds its way through and that extends the inning couple of hits in a row for him here just a simple ground ball the other way they’ve had eyes on it man sometimes that’s all you need to do just let the ball travel put the ball in play and just hope it finds a hole runner at first with two away and here is Conor Wong strike one swing and a miss wow no fair right there I mean that slider didn’t move till the very last moment incredibly difficult to pick that up just going to have to tip your cap on that pitch started after it tried to hold up now a look to First and he went around not an easy call there but that puts an end to the [Music] inning but the solo shot stretches their lead even further it’s now a 3-1 fun ball game you’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show back now at Fenway now it’s the DH Matthew baton baton goes 5′ 11 in 180 lb he’s usually a third baseman but today he’s the designated hitter the pitch one movement in the bullpen Greg Weiser up and throwing Jakes getting loose as [Applause] well and another ball two and one on the ground to De and the lead off hitter retired in the fifth Jackson Merill getting ready to hit fast ball for a strike it’s own and one next offering misses down and Away Red Sox leading it by two and we’re at the top of the fifth that one inside now two balls in a [Applause] strike hard hit to third tosses to First and the first two set down in the top of the f so the batting order turns over up now the Padre leadoff man Xander Bogarts he’s over [Applause] one well on the mound very efficient able to produce an outcome it seems like within the third or fourth pitch of just about every bat breaking ball inside two and0 Now One Missed and and there’s the automatic clearly taking all the way there in that three-oh count it was a cookie right down the middle the right-hander gives up the two out walk one of the things about that two out walk the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead so a ball down the line or into the Gap will produce a two out RB and those are the best that is if you are the offensive side of it check on the runner bards Dives back that one hammered Center Field Durant going back on this one pulls it in on the warning track no run runs no hits no errors and a runner left home half of the fifth coming up it’s the Red Sox three and the Padres one and we’re back now here is jiren Duran Chris his skill set straight out of the mid 80s good contact not much power and he could run he always uses the wheels to his Advantage his biggest challenge in this day and age is to not get caught up in trying to hit home runs because so many people are proar settles under it makes the grab and there’s one down now it’s Des at the pl one for two with an RBI double back in the first and a strike to Des so boo you went to college in this town what was it like for you being a college student and having the opportunity to bounce over here to finway park and see some games yeah in fact 1990 a couple of college classmates and I we were in college we bought Standing Room tickets and then the next night got a chance to see the Red Sox clinch the East against the white socks and that sliding catch in the corner by Tom branski the Red Sox would end up losing to the Oakland A’s in the playoffs but that’s one of the things that I’ll think about in terms of memories from going going to college and going to Fenway kasis stands in now and watches strike one a dive nice stop over to first and that’s a nice play to end the inning well that right there was all pre pitch positioning put himself in the perfect spot to make a great play now on the bump Greg Weiser still a lot of game left and this game could go either way so this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later Innings and now the first baseman Jake cronenworth one for [Applause] two and a pitch Cronin worth a seven round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way Swang and a miss and the count is 0 and two the Red Sox with some Bullpen action brenon Bernardino up and loosening in the [Applause] pen Here Comes a pitch he Dives but can’t hang on that’s a base hit so a man on base to start the inning everything came together for him off the bat it was headed for the Gap all the way and as a hitter you love seeing those as you take your first couple of steps out of the box you know you got some real estate to run on and such a good feeling nice liner into the Gap right there here’s Machado [Applause] and fouled off now this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here try to close that Gap but you know at the very least if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game the pitch swing in a Miss as he was out front that time got him swinging it’s a strike out couldn’t catch up to the heater and now the short stop Hung Kim definitely wants to stay out of the double play here ball on the ground in the infield should be an inning ending double play and a swinging to miss Smash down the left field line and that one hops the wall Here Comes cronenworth Around third ball comes home and he’s dead at the plate that really hurts right there this is no time to gamble when you’re down in the ball game you got to be sure if you’re going to advance a run or even try to score right there that you’re going to be safe just a poor decision and here’s the catcher Luis cusano that one finds the Zone strike [Applause] one with the tying run at the plate and we’re in the top half of the [Applause] sixth that to right diving makes the grab one of the most fun and exciting things you can do as an outfielder you lay out you make a diving catch and you end the inning that gets the team fired up in the Dugout back now for the bottom of the sixth and there’s a new pitcher on on the M Tom cosgro and they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the Lefty hitter coming up I think it’s a good move I know I never liked when opposing teams did that to me here now the Red Sox DH masataka yosida three pitch strikeout last time up got to put up more of a fight in this one as the Lefty gets to work hard hit right side steps on first for the out really nice job to get your first out of the ball game here’s Trevor story [Applause] now there’s a strike activity in the bullpen Jeremiah Estrada the young right-hander up and throwing Peralta the Lefty warming up as well fast ball for a [Applause] strike fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two and here it comes fouls it back with two [Applause] strikes fights it off you’ll see another Red Sox by two here in the bottom of the [Applause] sixth up and in it’s a ball in two strikes Hammer base hit so man aboard now with one [Applause] away everything came together perfectly for him right there got a fast ball middle of the plate jumped all over it absolutely smoked that ball and now they’ve got some speed on first so we’ll see if they try to get him into motion [Music] [Applause] auu the next to hit takes outside Story the base runner at first with one out now snap throw to first story back in and a dive and that’s off the Inside Edge and now two and0 and another ball three down and that gets the inside corner for a [Applause] strike and a 3-1 on the way and he hits a ground ball right side slings to Second return throw to first got him double play and that’ll do it one hit in the inning but nothing more than that we’re through six full it’s the Red Sox three and the Padre’s one welcome back we’re in the seventh we have a new pitcher on the map number 63 these are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves late and close there’s not much margin for error but at the same time there’s a reason they’re put in these situations proar climb in on that left side well both sides equally as strong so not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate that’s a hit man aboard on the leadoff single Matthew Batton the next up for the Padres [Applause] highfly ball out towards left field back there and it bangs off the monster profar headed for the plate he’ll score easily it’s 32 backto back base hits put a pretty good swing on that one as he drove it out to deep left didn’t quite have the right combination of launch angle and exit velocity to get it over the fence but you’re never going to be disappointed with extra bases and now the center Fielder Jackson merrow that’s a strike across the top of the Zone with the tying run at second here in the top half of inning number seven and that one fouled off so the tying run at second that’s out to center field moving under this one brings it in grounder tags it second and he’s in safely a third with one out so the lineup flips over and now Xander Bogarts this is what stat nerds like myself might call a high leverage situation yeah not sure what the numbers say but clearly and a bath that could change the course of this game dramatically don’t be surprised to ball on the ground to the corners that they come home with the baseball instead of going to first base he one the tying run is 90 ft away well we call that keyho holding even though it’s right there and looks pretty good if he doesn’t love it tie ball game as they get the second out but the Run scores well that’s a productive advat right there I’m sure he wanted a knock but puts the ball in play brings that run in from third ties up the ball game now it’s Fernando ta Jr 0 for three a fly out of ground out and a strike out right through there for a strike trying to keep good speed off the bases the1 is outside and it’s a ball on a strike and that’s in for a strike one two two outs that one back up the middle and it gets through just kept it simple played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there’s just no one there to knock it down and now a chance to maybe get Crea so the Red Sox bring on a new pitcher Brennan Bernardino bringing in the Lefty with a left-handed coming up to hit classic Bullpen move right here so we’ll see how it works out Jake Cronin workor the next up for the Padres fought off foul [Applause] two gone the possible go-ahead run at first next one misses and the count is one and one inside just missed that one misses and now three and one Manny Machado OD deck for the Padres swing and a highfly ball pretty well struck right field and an automatic double as it hops the fence well this tends to happen more often in this park than others and that short fence is just so inviting for hitters you see a lot of balls bounce over for an automatic double when no one can run it down so two on bit of strategy here they issue the intentional walk and that’ll set up a force play at any base well it doesn’t get much easier with this next batter but I totally understand going with the intentional walk in that spot he’s just too dangerous at the plate right now and there’s a base open so it gives you options defensively to get an out hard ground ball base now one runs in the throw in in there he’s safe 53 now well he delivers in a huge spot right there well he’s so dialed in I don’t think he even realizes how much pressure exists out there very easy swing nice and relaxed this is the type of approach you want to see guys take in this situation so first and second with two outs here’s the catcher Luis cusano right through there for a strike two on two outs little Chopper rolls foul the 02 and downstairs that’s a really good take outside low the count now two and two oh he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here 22 he’s already seen the curveball couple of times in this atat so might have it timed up and ready for it wouldn’t chase that time Machado at second Kim on it first with two now he goes down looking so nine batters come to the plate four of them score Midway in inning number seven and it’s time to stretch it’s the Padres five and the Red Sox three we’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh Jeremiah Estrada well the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game some of them are just wired different so we’ll see what he’s got here so stepping in for Boston Tyler O’Neal he’s already homward here in this one [Applause] Tyler and the pitch just missed you know these Red Sox doing a good job job of putting the ball into play and that makes things more challenging on the defensive side they’ve done a great job find this one swung on and hit well way back there and it’s off the green monster safe at second with a leadoff double well that’s how you respond leadoff man comes up gets into scoring position now there are several ways that they can get this run across now it’s the second baseman Von Grom swing and a miss strike one and one that one is absolutely belted and one hops Off the Wall should be extra basic the Run comes in from second and it’s now 54 and now the tying run is into scoring position [Applause] runner in scoring position no outs Conor Wong digs in now that one misses and that’s ball [Applause] one and it’s second struggled a little bit in this one couple of strikeouts earlier but doing a much better job in this bat to get ahead and find a good hitters count at 2 and0 the pitch and another ball home PL umpires trying to tighten things up a little bit jiren Durant up next and fires in a fast B at 95 Wy Peralta gets the ball now pretty big spot he’s coming into trying to strand that runner at second base so he’s going to need to make some quality pitches he does have first open if he needs to use it and that’s too high ball four walks out of the bullpen can absolutely kill your momentum very quickly they’re in some hot water trying to protect this lead and next for the Red Sox jiren Durant one for three sliced hard but foul swing and a miss and that’s strike two well he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs you’ve got to expand the Zone he’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it popped up to the left into foul ground and out number one on the grab two onone out and stepping in for Boston Rafael Des Des the babyfaced Assassin he’s a guy who does it all with the lack of contact in today’s game this guy hits for contact so he delivers average but there’s on based slug too and that’s in there at the knees early in the count you have to be real careful because of that power but then if this hitter gets a strike or two on him he’s still very comfortable and because he has the ability to get the barrel to the baseball he’s a threat deep into the count as well [Applause] two on one out swings and misses and the count one and two base hit into the Outfield throw comes in quickly and the tying run forced to hold on a third with one away couldn’t have timed it up any better than that to me just a really controlled balanced swing he wasn’t trying to do too much with it just stayed disciplined got the barrel to the ball and put it in play now that sets up a huge atat in this ball game and here’s the first baseman Tristan casus golden opportunity right here and fouled off leftand hitter Waits and that misses off the outside edge in the infield at the corners don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring next pitch in for a strike one and two ground ball right side base hit one run in already another comes in to score they’ve got the lead 65 such great concentration everybody on their feet knowing that you can come through with a good swing and there he doesn’t try to do too [Applause] much one down masataka Yoshida the next to hit 0 for three with two ground outs and a strikeout that one finds The Zone and that is strike [Applause] one on the ground right side and that’s just foul this guy’s seen two change UPS in a row could be a little vulnerable for fastball right here next pitch way upstairs in the dirt but kept close throw is low and he can’t pick it and now a single might score two that one just misses and a full [Applause] countdown that’s foul off to the right side keeps the ab going Des the runner at third casus over at second with one down keeps the it back going with a foul ball 32 and that one off the Inside Edge he walked him it wasn’t easy but he earned that walk after a long it bat now a great back and forth and that it bad he had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there I’ll tell you right now I couldn’t have done it Adrien morol gets handed the rock out of the pen he has a great slider with tons of movement here’s Trevor story that’s in there strike one tough situation right here so so important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right [Music] there all loaded up here the bottom of the seven this one is blasted a no doubter rant slam a massive home run and they add on it’s 105 listen to these fans this place is absolutely buzzing right now you can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast [Applause] Booth well he comes through big time with the Grand Slam here but you also got to give some credit to the guys ahead of him good at bats to get on base and really at the table for a very special moment in this one so stepping in for Boston Willer aru and he pumps it a strike still only one out here in the inning that’s towards Center Maro drifts towards it drops into the glove and there’s two now two outs face is empty now the left fielder Tyler O’Neal he’s already homered in this game ball one there and that’s outside now two and0 tried to back door with that slider right there but just missed off the plate good pitch though swing and a miss now two and one two one count and that one fouled off good eye in that spot and that’s awfully close I don’t know how you take that he’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it the final damage here they bat around 10 come to the plate seven runs on the board we look ahead to inning number eight it’s the Red Sox 10 Padre’s five five welcome back in a new arm of the mound to start the eight Chris Martin and you know Bullpen guys can struggle sometimes when they’re called upon with big leads because it just doesn’t have the same intensity as a tight game so we’ll see how sharp he is your mental toughness matters in situations like this as well the pitch now a high fly ball out to left Center O’Neal drifts towards it makes the catch for the out next is the designated hitter Matthew Batton right through there for a strike Martin measures 6′ 8 in he features a four seam fast ball a cutter a splitter a sinker and he works in a slider one down base is empty and a foul ball the o02 and a foul ball he stays alive and the rhander deals foul ball it stays nothing in two base is empty one away and we’re in the top of the eighth stays alive also really good at bat what I like about this guy his Bat stays in the zone for a long time gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches and there’s a ball righty delivers fights that one away still one and two right-hander kicks deals just misses the mark outside the Zone really good take especially with two strikes swings through that one it’s a strike out two outs Bas is empty Jackson Merill the next up for the Padres that one inside one and0 one ball no stri and another ball towards first he takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it Padres go down quietly work to do it’s 105 back now new pitcher on the mount as we roll into the bottom of the eighth anel de los Santos well they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep the score right where it is seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging it vau Grom now at the plate three for three with two singles and a double and the pitch just missed this one in the air right field no trouble here puts it away for the out and there’s one down up for the red the catch con and now it’s the catcher for the Red Sox Conor Wong fast ball for a strike and there’s a strike [Applause] and that’s outside O2 fast ball way out of the Zone I think he’s trying to speed him up got to stay back off speed’s probably coming spoils the two- strike pitch and he’ll see another the one two hit on the ground to the right right side and foul ball right-handed reliever that’s a little bit low wouldn’t chase that time down full and that’s ball for that’s a great atat he saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk second walk of the game for him and he’s been really patient at the play a game plan that he’s sticking to he’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there and he bunts but that’s a foul ball move to First and he’s back safely and the righty deals missed with a change up and that is ball one out towards left Center and and base hit and they’ll have Runners at the corners after a one out [Applause] single that ball right there landed in what they call the No Man’s Land meaning it’s not really a spot on the field where you can expect anyone to get to it easily I mean it’s a tough play going back for the short stop but also for the outfielders trying to come in they got to go a long way as well so one out with to a board rafield Des getting ready to hit swinging a foul back that’s out of [Applause] play leftand batter waights and a foul ball Runners at the corners one away here the bottom half of the eighth inning down and in moved his feet that one not close it’s two and two goes down looking and now the first baseman Tristan [Applause] kasus upstairs way to lay off that fastball up right there you’re looking for something you see well that you can handle but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high that one’s spoiled and the count now two and one and he swings and lifts one to deep center field that’s back gone he’ll Circle the bases it’s 13 five that’s their third home run of the game they’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one they’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot change up up in the zone is a hitter’s Dream It’s a BP fastball but you’re playing in real time most times the pitcher asking for a new baseball just like right there out of the bull f for the Padres Pedro Aila and with the big deficit on the scoreboard he almost has to just put that out of his mind every outing matters for relievers in their numbers but I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game masataka Yoshida up next for the Red Sox and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter Yan slider misses [Applause] outside two down nobody on all Red Sox in this one and another [Applause] ball and he walked him trying to work his way back into the count right there but so much for that pretty good pitch but just doesn’t get the call on 3 0 two outs runner at first Trevor story will hit next right through there for a strike Yoshida off of first with two [Applause] away next offering is in for a strike the short stop takes a ball and a one two good job to fight that one off two outs swings and misses pulled the string on the change up but the biggest swing of the inning comes right here a three-run homer Last Chance coming up for the Padres back inside Fenway Park here’s Xander Bogarts the pitch just [Applause] missed right through there for a strike in this situation you expect the Batters to be a little more patient possibly take until they get a strike with that you don’t want to miss your opportunity to get ahead early in the count he didn’t right there and the next pitch is way outside wouldn’t chase that time [Applause] count that one drilled left field O’Neal raging back towards the wall and it’s off the out of town scoreboard into second easily with a lead off double he absolutely ripped that ball out front and almost got it out of here here man just a really strong balanced swing and a fraction of an inch different on the bat and it is probably out of [Applause] here so a man aboard and the batter will be Fernando tatis Jr this one in the air casus settles under this one and it fou ground he pulls it down one [Applause] out jakon he’s two outs away Jake cronenworth the next up for the Padre’s that Clips the corner [Applause] swing and a ground ball out to short story sends it over to First that takes care of Cronin worth Manny Mach last chance for the Padre’s Manny Machado the next up for the Padre’s fast ball for a strike all impressive that he went right after him on that first pitch that’s the key try to get ahead in the count then you can play around a little bit more as it bat expands man on second two down and Manny gets a piece the Padres down to their final strike in the air on the infield Grom gets under it and he will put it away ball game and the Red Sox take this one in a blowout that was pretty close one until that huge seventh inning really turned things around the bats just caught on fire and it seemed like nobody could make it out put a lot of runs up and that propelled them to the win and the final here today 135 for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the Show I’m John Shi thanks for joining us [Applause]
