San Jose Sharks Highlight Day Two Of The Draft With Igor Chernyshov And Leo Sahlin Wallenius

the draft here looking at rounds two through S see the pieces that the Sharks had um and you have to keep in context right not every pick is going to be a home run um but you’re looking for traits especially as you get into the middle to late rounds but we have to start at the top uh where these sharks at number 33 draft eigor chernishov uh a Russian forward who a lot of people had mocked in the late teens early 20s um and a guy I didn’t really talk about too much on the show because I didn’t think he would be in the strike zone for the sharks so uh let’s get to know shernoff here a bit more um 2024 like I said second round pick um 33 overall he only in the the numbers are not going to be impressive because he was playing in the KHL uh which is the Russian version of the NHL right so he’s a 17 18y old kid playing over in a men’s league 34 games had three goals and one assist uh during that time but if you go into his Juniors the MHL which is the equivalent of like uh the CHL which you know the OHL the the WHL etc etc get 28 points in 22 games uh during that time six foot2 196 pound right-handed shot um from Russia who has shades of Pavo pvic to his game uh this is a wonderful pick by the sharks um getting a first round Talent who in the beginning of of the second round um and there’s questions about his game we’ll go kind of go through what his game is but um he very much is a power power forward mold type of player where he’s going to use his speed use his strength use his power um and that is how he’s going to kind of affect the game and when you kind of compare that to what the sharks have already you know added and what they continue to add um I think it’s a nice kind of complimentary piece to what the sharks have already kind of been putting together here so um so yeah for sherov um like I said 6 foot to 196 pounds physical hardworking power forward who excels at creating chances off the rush and dominates when becoming uh physical that’s kind of the elevator pitch that Elite prospects has um they go on to say um their team was drawn to shop skills set in a draft minus one season they saw him scoring at a point per game clip in the MHL and he made his KHL debut before a year before his draft um while the Russian Winger had a relatively slow start to his draft here things started to pick up quickly uh he ended up spending majority of the Season playing bottom six minutes in the KHL so he didn’t produce much that’s if you see the four goals or the four points right um he’s probably you know he’s not playing a ton of minutes during that time he is um bottom six minutes he’s you know really not playing so the the production can be a little me but um they go on to say uh while he didn’t produce much he provided plenty of value and a variety ways especially given his limited role at the junior level he’s a dominant Forest when he took over games uh regularly um his 1.27 go points per game is the seventh best Mark in NHL history among dra draft eligible skaters with over 20 games played so that’s pretty good um what makes his feet more impressive is that two of his 28 points came on the power play so that’s all even strength there so 26 points at even strength um jesha doesn’t have a single Elite skill or element to his game instead he’s one of the more well-rounded players in the draft who can impact the game a variety of ways to provide value in all three zones uh powerful high-end skater shov excels at anticipating openings and exploding them he beats Defenders by by consistently uh setting up his decks building up speed below the puck and then attacking with a speed advantage and working give and goes he’s often direct uh but a rather Advanced delay game that can uh pull out when this situation calls for it so um the KHL though he Prov provided that he’s more of a well-rounded player in the class many players who are puck dominant Juniors is always a big problem right is you spend in juniors and you as you go up you don’t get the puck as much because there’s usually better players but uh sherov he as he went up his off Puck work continued to get better um he adapted and learned uh to use his heavy his skills a little bit more um like using his physicality using kind of his like those type of skills right uh when he doesn’t have the puck he push the pace Drive the net throws his we around gets pucks Off the Wall works hard on the back check and creates turnovers extend possessions the offensive zone it’s not like have occasional offensive highlights too he’s very much like in the mbn the M Michael BR neard type of of role but he kind of has the the B middle six with potential to maybe be a top six type of player um but again you’re getting this type of player in the second round um like this is a great pick right um and as you see what the sharks have put together here this Prospect pool um which you could argue could argue is uh is definitely one of the best in the NHL and you could argue it it is the best I would say the goal tending is it’s very much its weak point but among the forward group there’s not many prospects pools that have as good a forward group um as the sharks have here so um but I think though with with this pick again you’re you you’re giving something different and we we’ve noticed now with a couple drafts with um Mike gr is he does love that size right if you’re supremely skilled and um he he’ll definitely pick you know as Will Smith and celebrini who are both supremely skilled not as big as other guys but um if it’s kind of close he’s going to go for the size and that makes sense especially when you have you know Will Smith and celebrini and ekan who are a little little bit on the shorter side here so um but I sherov is is a feels like a home run type of of of hit especially in the second round when a lot of people had him as a potential third round um you know so he was there at at the you know doesn’t understand English um is had to have a translator so um you know definitely he kind of talks about like he expects to be a first round player but it was was um he said devast at least the translator said devastated that he wasn’t a first round pick um but he’s going to work hard and and be a um do everything he can to to get to the NHL I expect him to be I think he’s over in Russia for at least two seasons 2425 so maybe only one season um unless he signs a contract extension at least this is from um Elite Prospect so for his path I kind of expect him at least one more season over in the KHL um and then he can come over and play in the AHL I mean he can play in the HL basically as soon as he wants since he is 18 already um but since he’s under contract in the KHL he’ll be their first season I kind of expect I I expect them to you know work out a situation get him over here afterwards and then um he can kind of spend another year or two playing on the Barracuda um and just kind of getting used to North American ice and kind of getting used to the North American game but the way it sounds like the he plays I don’t think he’s gonna have a a tough transition to North American style of play of just kind of being a little bit more physical um in in you know especially the AHL compared to the KHL and um I think I think he’s going to be a really nice fit for the Sharks going down the line so uh we’ll look at some of these second round picks here that the Sharks added as uh they added a couple guys or sorry another second round pick and a third round pick here um as they added a couple guys and we’ll look at some of the late round guys and kind of see see the trends and see some of the roles that these guys might fill so we’ll get to that here in just one second passion drive and patience the formula for sharks had another pick of course uh pick 53 uh where they made I think a really nice pick as well um so they got Leo Alin wenes second round pick spent this last season playing over in uh Sweden on the j20 vro Lakers um 43 games there had 11 goals and 31 assist during that time uh wallenius I know is a little bit of a I don’t know if it’s saline wenus or we’re just going to go with wenus right now because San saline wenus is a little bit of a mouthful um um but uh Leo saline wenus was he was ranked a little bit lower in the elite prospects uh I think they had him ranked 69 very nice um but he’s six foot 183 pound left-handed shot um has not made his shl debut yet I think that’s kind of he mentioned in his press availability that’s that’s kind of the goal is to make the shl next season um this guy and he’s just he did mention he signed a two-year contract so he’s going to be in the sh for at least two seasons um so don’t like you know this is very much a more of a long-term kind of of project for for the Sharks here so um great skater um you know and we have talked about him a little bit on this on this show before but um he the way he doesn’t really kind of if you hear like you know he’s six foot you know 185 pounds uh like you you kind of picture a more offensively driven guy and he’s doesn’t really provide that though um he has the tools to stay involved with with the play shot capable of finishing them occasionally um as he has 11 goals of them um and it’s not like a crazy shooting percentage um but they on Elite prospects they call him a vanilla hockey player with offensive is from the offensive Blue Line um he doesn’t use or even manage space particularly well he’s neither deceptive nor manipulative um the what’s he does really well though is his defensive Game and his TR Puck transition those are kind of the areas that he projects really well defensive skate allows them to match speed and space with ease contain opponents and get stops along the wall consistent scanning allows them to disrup potential scoring plays as they develop undersiz are not uh the defender never backs down physically something you like to hear with the puck wenus can uh easily avoid for checking pressure and generate exits and entries at PACE he’s not an elite Puck Handler by any means but he’s good enough to dangle his way through a four cheer or two um still silly W is a bit of a difficult spot most pars of size have to bring more Dynam has to be more Dynamic to be in the NHL um and it’s just not there so he has to rely on playing mistake free hockey in the defensive Zone which is uh a tough thing to ask for but I still really like this pick especially when you consider it’s your fourth pick right um and getting him at 53 this is you know you you see tools that could project and I think his um defensive style of play and his transition game and if you can find anything else offensively um I there’s definitely something potentially there for him so um and then kind of adding him to your as your second defenseman in this draft class U behind Sam Dickinson like I’m okay with that you know um you have to I know it’s a second round pick but you have to also keep in mind that this is your fourth pick in the second defenseman you you’ve taken it with him so you’re for these kind of this pick and the next pick you’re you’re looking for tools that that can be complimentaries to some of the players you picked already and you’re also especially as we go later in the draft you’re looking for skills that you think are NHL translatable um going forward so um I know there’s some people who don’t like him I think the hockey IQ is is something he’s going to need to kind of continue to work on that kind of hockey sense and how he thinks the game uh and how he processes it but I still think there’s skills there um let him he’s going to be kind of like have le where you just let him go simmer for the next couple seasons over there before you even thinking about bringing him over so no rush let him he’s got plenty of time let him play a couple seasons in the shl so um next addition for the sharks um is a forward out of uh the WHL Carson wetch a third round pick with the Calgary Hitman uh he played in 67 games a year 25 goals 25 assists 252 shots on goal um and I think he is a potential like I think he’s a very much a fan favorite type of guy uh after talking to him uh sorry I’m trying to pull up his his thing here right now as well but um he super outgoing guy that’s uh we’ll start with that very super outgoing guy really kind of fun to talk to um he’s a six foot two right-handed shot 2011 pound forward uh like I said 50 points in 67 games uh for the Calgary Hitman a his elevator pitch from Elite prospects a north south checking Winger with an NHL shot and a Thunders hit and the tools become a true power forward uh good skater willing to to lay out people he mentioned um he likes to kind of be that agitator um in in kind of if you watch I put up his press availability you can go watch that on YouTube if you haven’t watched it loves to be an agitator um loves to kind of make people like kind of that make that dumb type of face um pretty solid shooter needs to work on his uh passing and and kind of Puck handling um but is a good skater as well um long powerful strides and driving crossovers launch W Pats opponent with a step he takes the puck straight to the net if not he fires up blistering inride rer as play goes back the other way he hunts down the puck carryer and launches them into the boards and plays a direct easily appreciable style to the offensive zone uh wet battles for positioning and Fades High into the space stick loaded and ready to fire one timers uh with these tools uh he could be a middle six power forward first he’s gonna need to add more layers to the game um so they say he’s while he is physical he needs to be more consistent with his physicality and be better at kind of winning positions positioning U being a little bit more confident um there’s flashes but it needs to be more creative uh but again when you have the players that the sharks have um may not so he kind of projects to be a bottom six probably like a fourth line type of player but I he has fan favorite written all over him um he’s gonna be going back to Calgary which in the WHL um and spend some time in there uh before he kind of makes his his Pro debut and I I fully expect him I I think Calgary supposed to be a little bit better this year um so hopefully he’s going to continue to have a big role with with the Hitman uh and continue his development but he does have like that fan favorite written all over him because I think uh he’s got the personality and I think he plays that style of just aggressive uh I’m gonna run you down type of of hockey um so and also score some sweet goals at the same time so um yeah I I know the Sharks traded up here a couple moved up uh three picks here uh to get them like at when you start to get that part of the draft like I don’t just if you have a guy you like just pick the guy you like um situation and um you know I I thought they might have gone goalie here but they end up going goalie uh actually they doubled down on goalie so we’ll talk about the the two goalies that they added and the two defenseman that they added um as well both defenseman from the lot couple lot of WHL additions so we’ll get to that here in just one second all right uh let’s continue uh so we go a little bit quicker with with these guys here um and kind of just talk about some of the trades and what kind of the expectation for them is uh so the Sharks drafted a one of two goalies Christen Kirch uh drafted him in the fourth round uh played in Switzerland last year uh played a bunch of games 30 Games headed 232 goals against average they don’t have a sa percentage for some reason uh but he will is actually coming over to the US to play in the USHL uh before he goes to UMass so um as with all goalies who knows uh with them because they’re all Voodoo at some point um but no he um very honest kid um kind of hearing from from him uh he’s 6’4 190 pounds uh says he tries to model his game off of Conor hell um but you know very honest honest kid um you know kind of talked about how he he expected to be picked pitch kind of in the fourth round um you know it very honest that he’ll get some Polish there when it comes to the the interviews but um I think though Coming to America and he’s going to be playing a bunch of games in the USHL he play a bunch of games in Switzerland and he’s probably going to play a bunch of games in in college so um as with all goalies it is you’re hoping for some of the traits uh for him and I think that the size and the athleticism is uh what you’re kind of EX hoping for um and playing in North American ice now will will be a I think a big um kind of help for him so that way you don’t really see the the transition um from him so scouting report says um the move yeah he’s moving to like I said moving to the USA Gill uh move will not only help him just before heading off the play NC but it also serve as a chance for Scouts to get a a longer look at him um he’s not didn’t get past over um his big body comes from a feudal uh while trying to maneuver around the crease but he makes up for for clean footwork strong edor while getting down on the butterfly developing more patience with the gamees while the game speeds up is going to be crucial uh going forward uh he already is a very slide happy when the puck is carried through the middle of the ice instead of holding edges as the game speed UPS around him he’ll kind of uh drops in the Bary a little bit too soon so his physical skills will need a lot of refinement but there’s plenty work to be done but with great size and a framework of skills there’s no question kersen to turn into a goal tender that sees NHL time so again goalies you and I know we we’ve seen goalies come from nowhere we’ve seen him come from everywhere um and I am very much in the just keep taking a goalie every season much like a quarterback in the NFL if you don’t have a quarterback just keep taking one until you find one um and I especially with right with with goalies just keep taking them until you and see if you can kind of mold them um and get them kind of playing the way you want so um yeah I’m awesome just keep drafting goalies so uh next uh these sharks added another defenseman and Colton Roberts 2024 uh fifth round pick playing with the Vancouver Giants 62 games this year it’s seven goals 20 assists with a 12 shots on goal uh another big boy uh six foot4 um and like right around 200 pounds I’m pulling up his uh page right now but yeah six foot4 um big boy as the Sharks continue you if you like the uh just add big players um in the draft the Sharks did that this year especially on the blue line big mey defensive players who shut down things that’s that’s what the Sharks did this year and they’re trying to fill a role yeah 6’4 184 pounds right-handed shot um 27 points in 62 games for the Giants a tall mobile defenseman with shut down potential and breakout skill but hockey sense must continue to improve it’s kind of his elevator pitch um again another physical player um he brings NHL caliber skating with plenty of fashion of skill but hasn’t quite put it all the pieces together but one thing’s for certain he has home run potential and again you’re picking in the fifth round here um Robert’s Mobility is more evident in his retrievals while he easily beats opponents to his pucks takes the space and accelerates on reception is also capable of making high level on the breakout um they also so say re Envision are Robert’s weakness he has skillful patterns such as those breakout plays or his pump fix but rarely takes the space those plays create he rarely makes the best play in for checking pressure leads to significant uptick and turnovers so as such Roberts is more likely to be a shutdown projection keyword projection has retrievals and flashes of physicality but must tighten up his Gap control footwork defending the rush in details he struggles with passivity through the neutral zone and over skating laty at times but his Rush defense steadly improved this season there is Boom potential because these tools but most likely Robert keeps Hony in his shut down game and earns bottom pairing rooll perfect right um you’re add sharks just adding as kind of the shotgun approach I talked about as potential in the second round they just did it throughout the draft and just added a bunch of defenseman and see which one potentially hits here so same thing um picking number another WHL player in Nate misy um he was an over AER so he was actually available for last year’s draft um but was not drafted went back into the draft um so playing for Victoria he was uh he knows him and Gan La Rock are good friends um so this year he played 44 games missed some time because of injury seven goals 26 uh 27 assist excuse me with 136 shots on goal uh for misy um again another physical player hard-hitting smart defenseman who keeps adding more skills and layers to his game must develop skating further to play in the NHL um goes on Elite prospects goes on to say his misy keeps getting better the WHL rookie Sly rose up the Victoria Royals depth chart holding down big minutes in the second half he went undrafted but took a significant step in every fast of the game this season even an injury that SED him for two months couldn’t stop his skyrocketing development their physical Defenders and their players like MSY enter the space expect to pay the price he throws crushing hits along the boards vicious cross checks around his net and always sneaks in an extra shot strong defensive game supports all that physicality melli attacks angles before looking for contact times poke checks just as opponents expose the puck and forces attacks to turn attackers to a turn into against the boards after winning battles he quickly finds the next play even deceiving a bit when necessary to start to attack so again you’re looking for these traits physical smart Defender needs to work on the skating but you’re looking for traits and another big boy um to add as well at 63 198 rightand a shot um so I think Elite prospects had him ranked 90th so like and rankings at at this point or whatever so finally sharks added another another goalie uh yaroslav CV I’m sorry um he played in the MHL so he played six games with Scott St Petersburg he got I think he got traded from another team as well we played a little bit more but 216 n uh goals against 936 save percentage uh in the MHL uh again and just with these guys you’re looking for projects I’m going to trust them uh to try to find a goalie from somewhere um I really don’t have much else on him but uh he’s gonna be playing with uh Scott St Petersburg um they’re one of the Premier Russian teams uh in systems we’ve seen a bunch of players come through that system um so you’re you’re just taking Dart throws on guys you like with the talents he’s 6’2 so a little bit shorter compared to some of the other um goalies that we have seen the Sharks take um 6’2 16 pounds uh little bit older his birth date is uh that is in August so was he an over Ager anyway um but again you’re you’re you’re taking shots here so um yeah that’s going to be it on on at least for this portion of the draft we’ll after we get through kind of free AG just see we’ll start digging into some more of these guys here um kind of see what they rank and all that fun stuff so plenty more kind of draft coverage as we finish up I’m sure we’ll have some friends online to on the show to talk about uh what they thought of the Sharks draft um so we’re g to quickly turn our attention now to free agency so uh we’ll be back Sund Sunday night Monday morning On a busy Day two of the National Hockey League’s annual draft, the San Jose Sharks added several key players to their prospect pool. Start by looking at forward Igor Chernyshov, who many had predicted would go in the late teens or early twenties. His skill set is a great complement to what the Sharks have added in their high-end skill players like Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith, and a look at what his potential timeline to come to North America looks like. What were they getting when San Jose added defenseman Leo Sahlin Wallenius to their prospect pool? Look at how he could be a big addition to the Sharks in a few seasons. Then, Carson Wetsch has the makings of a fan favorite with his combination of skill, grit, and intensity. Next, look at new goalie Christian Kirsch and some of the tools he has in the net. With the additions of Colton Roberts and Nate Misskey, the Sharks added two big, bullying defensemen to the ranks. Finally, Yaroslav Korostelyov is a potential piece in the net as the Sharks look to find their long-term goalie.
