2024 NHL Draft: Daniel Briere

2024 NHL Draft: Daniel Briere

uh just first off your overall take on the day too and the draft in general yeah we’re happy um you know there’s uh there’s some couple guys that dropped uh that we had much higher we’re actually trying to move up to uh to get them and um it worked in our favor we were able to to get them much later than than we had on our list so we’re extremely happy um you know but it’s one thing to be happy now we’ll see in 2 3 four years from now how well it went you talk about the drafts as a whole and you look at them kind of as like one sort of entity right 23 24 25 so now that you have a lot of pick stockpile for next year does it just become even more important to to make next year’s count as well as what you’ve done already here absolutely um you know we’ve uh we’ve had the chance to upgrade the draft next year um the tough part is to be patient um you know wish we would have a better or name to put to those picks uh that’s the tough part but I think it’s clear we’re we’re still you know doing trying to do it the the way we had planned from the beginning uh that was the plan and we’re following that but uh there’s no doubt we you know sometimes it’s tough it’s tough to to stay patient uh I’m glad we did really with the exception of the the sixth round pick it seemed like everybody you guys took today had size they were bigger guys was that an emphasis you had going in or just play out that way no it wasn’t it just kind of happened to be that way um you know sometimes obviously the the guys that are bigger are are maybe ranked it’s something that you you can’t teach uh size uh but it it just happened it’s not uh it wasn’t a mandate going into the day that we were trying to get better um the one thing we wanted to focus on from you know the start of the draft was uh secure our centerman position a little better um you know that’s where Jack berglin and Ronin came into play today um the sizes just an a nice added uh plus to it the top of you guys like had really good standout U the U really just solidify their position with you guys you’re talking about like all three the top all the three top guys um Hurrican I don’t know in lenk’s case I mean we had him you know we liked them from the beginning he just kept getting better and better as the season went on and the stock was was climbing um the other one yeah berglin played really well at the u8s I hadn’t had the chance to see him before um so the way he played certainly had something to do and in Gil case is actually the other thing the other way for him um barely played at the u8s uh was kind of relegated to a uh 7 dman kind of role so um so yeah one helped himself the other one probably helped himself falling back and that’s why we were able to to get him uh as late as we did in in in Gil Gil case yeah what made you decid you moved up to get him what made you Gil yeah what was it yeah our guy were guys are scouts at seeden play throughout the year they were really high on him and um honestly at uh at 51 we were debating between the two of them we had both of them uh neck and neck um kind of like what we talked about we went with the centerman because of uh you know kind of we’re missing it in the organization but um you know Gil kept dropping and dropp so we had the chance to uh move up in you know from our third round and give an asset later on but looking at the draft next year were you know pretty solid we felt um that’s a pick we could use and when you look at it we it it’s a pick that you know moving back yesterday with lenko gave us a chance to move in to get killed so that’s how we saw it you’re going through last year’s draft as a guy in charge help you you with the mechanics of this year in terms of knowing what how to work I definitely felt a lot more comfortable um you know the first time around things are happening fast um you know today we it was interesting to see cu the last few years we never really weren’t involved in a second round of the draft it was interesting to see today trying you know we had 51 but we’re trying to get another one um it was a good lesson for me to to see how active it can be when when you have picks in the second round you spend the night guys kind of have their list and then you have a chance to refocus and really there’s players that are you’re staring at at you and we’re not the only team most teams are doing that and um I saw how valuable it is to have early second round picks because those those guys that had the first 10 picks in in the second round were getting hounded by by a lot of people is there room for you to add anyone for Monday you know I know you got free agency opening up and you you you cleared a little bit of money with the buyout are you still approaching free agency as is probably going to be slow or do you have maybe a little bit more flexibility not really it’s I I still expect it to be slow you know it can always change but I expect it to be slow on our part even with buying out cam we had no choice to buy out cam uh just to put us in a in a decent position so we’re not out of the woods with uh when the salary cap so don’t expect too much qualifying offers are due tomorrow to Bobby bring Sima and Carter har where your things stand in the um that’s exactly what you know tonight we’ll be discussing and uh we’re still talking to their agents trying to you know make something happen but um we’ll have a better decision for you or answer for you on July 1sted any have you received any direction from the NHL yet in not yet not yet that’s I think they wanted the NHL to pass uh we’re we’re going to have hopefully those discussions later tonight or tomorrow did you make a final did you make a final decision on uh Cal Peterson if you’re going to keep him or they’re going to go through a while I would say at this point we’re probably leaning towards keeping them um you know depending you know what happens in the next uh 48 hours till July July 1st but I would say at this point we’re leaning on on keeping them and then any clarification on the Ryan Johansson situation no it’s still status quo um I I don’t think we have the the possibility to buy him out at this point because he he is still injured and you don’t expect him to play any games for for the Flyers next season is it is it it’s tough to tell um we don’t know if when we have no idea when he’s going to be healthy at this point so uh take it one day at a time it’s uh it’s a little bit bag of a surprise right now

Hear from Daniel Briere following day two of the NHL Draft.

  1. Jett was a sneak pick. Hype was there just not put out in the media because teams thought they could get away with getting him late. The D we’ve acquired have promise based on film, and acquiring a possible 3rd first round pick in a better draft class next year, that’s playing chess while knowing the reality of where the team is right now. Pure GM move. All yall would be forcing picks for a team that isn’t ready to win yet, and you’d be failing. Also, picking prospects just to trade them tarnishes your reputation amongst players current and upcoming. Trust needs to be precedented.

Danny 🤝🏼 Jonesy 🤝🏼 a rebuild for long lasting success.

  2. No real chance this year could have been more exciting than last, added some decent prospects and picks. Anyone losing their mind about this needs to find a summer hobby. And maybe one for the rest of the year too.

  3. People that have been watching the game a long time have the right to not like some of these picks. People shouldn't be crucified for disagreeing with the Luchanko pick. Were people in the erong when they questioned the Morin, Rubtsov and O'Brien picks too? Passing on Buium could end up haunting us for years.

  4. Not a flyers fan but I really love ur GM. I think their making great decisions regards to FA, Trades, drafting and draft assets. I always felt bad for y’all bc clearly Holmgren, Hextall, and Fletcher were awful. Look it’s gonna suck losing but you guys will be good again. Just give it time and be patient. Patience is the key
