there the great Matt olir joins the show hello Matt Hey Jake what’s going on my friend happy July 1 to you and you told me off air that you have officially closed on your home so congrats on that I can’t even imagine all the work and stress that goes into something like that yeah thank you it’s been a stressful few few weeks I closed on Thursday so I feel like I haven’t had a chance to Blink in about four days so it’s been a little hectic but all all good things going right now I think the good news for you is there’s really not much happening with the Jets right now I don’t know how much you’re going to be covering uh Aaron Rogers attending UFC 303 on Saturday but that seems to be the only thing that’s moving the needle right now yeah uh I could not have asked this to come at a better time like in the this is by far the slowest point in the NFL season so I am trying to get everything I need done and be moved in by the uh training camp week which is July 23rd so I have like three weeks to get everything done did a [ __ ] ton of furniture shopping been was at the house like nine or 10 hours yesterday doing work so we’re banging stuff out we’re moving this thing along we’re jet so I thought it’d be good to kind of kick off this month by bringing someone on who really knows the team and knows about all the big story lines and maybe some of the smaller story lines that the die hards care about as training camp approaches we’ll start big picture to me the biggest storyline to watch between now and later this month when Camp opens is Assan reic contract situation what are your thoughts on where we stand right now and do you expect some sort of resolution by the time we get to the report date for the Jets on the 23rd yeah I do think there will be some sort of resolution I feel like that’s been uh it’s been quiet I mean obviously him not showing up to the mandatory mini camp was a big story but it’s not like we’ve heard any Rumblings from either side on a new deal or if the Jets were standing firm on not giving him a new contract I think at the end of the day they reached some sort of an agreement whether that’s tacking on an additional year to kind of line up with this Aaron Rogers window maybe it’s converting some of the money to uh you know like some sort of bonuses or adding in some incentives here just something to get him a little bit more guaranteed and maybe something to get uh him just a little bit more comfortable coming out there but they traded for him to be a big part of this 2024 defense at the end of the day it’s not going to be smart for him to hold out this year at age 30 like if the Jets really wanted to call us Bluff like he’s not going to sit the entire year so uh I think he eventually shows up and when he does it’ll be a good thing because as I said he’s going to be an important part of the defensive do you think Assan reck is almost flying under the radar as far as what he brings to this Jets team because the talk has been well they let Bryce Huff go and now it’s about Hassan reck’s contract when I feel like we should be talking about the fact that this guy is awesome and I could promise you Jet fans if he’s out there healthy there’s going to be a game or two if not more where he makes a big play in the fourth quarter whether it’s a it’s a force fumble it’s a pure sack it’s just a huge you know uh QB hit that leads to the Jets closing out a game and picking up a big win yeah I agree with you he’s I mean as I said he’s an important part of this defense and something the Jets haven’t had the luxury of the last couple years with this defense being so good they haven’t played with a ton of leads in the fourth quarter so that that’s going to be new to see them close out games and how they’d be able to handle that but he is the exact kind of guy you want screaming off the edge when you have a big lead in the you know and the other teams in a obvious passing situation I I think he’s going to have some pretty big moments for the Jets this year would not surprise me at all if he’s a double digit sack guy again with some strip sacks thrown in there as well it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch how do you feel about the rest of this defensive line I think one of the story lines to watch this summer is who kind of emerges next to some of the guys you know are going to have bigger roles we know will McDonald’s expected to play a much bigger part but there’s some other guys that are going to get an opportunity to really showcase themselves next to the established guys like quinnon like reick like Germaine now in year three your thoughts on the overall state of the D yes so I think it’s still one of the best defensive lines in the league I mean it’s them Philadelphia and the 49ers and whatever order you want to put them in I know PFF had their rankings that had the Jets number one uh and I think you can make a strong case that they are number one the funny thing is though I do think they took a little bit of a step back uh from last year with some of their depth like losing John Franklin Myers I think is a sneaky big thing for this Jets defense that isn’t getting talked about a lot uh I know they brought in kinlaw but I think Quinton Jefferson was a really productive piece and I don’t know how much of an upgrade if at all uh leaky fotu is over alwoods so I think you can make the case that on paper they took a little bit of a step back but it’s still going to be a very very good unit and at least in the interim like again with we open the show talking about Hassan Ric he is going to be a major major player uh for this Jets defensive line and they might struggle against the run but I think they’re kind of selling out to be as dominant as they can be against the pass we brought up the Reddit contract situation do you expect the Jets to work out any extension between now and Camp starting remember a year ago they got the Quinn Williams done deal done right before training camp do you think the Jets could work out a potential extension with Michael Carter DJ re Tyler conin those are some of the popular names you hear about yeah I really hope we see a Michael Carter extension he would be the one that I would choose now I I love DJ Reed and I think it would stink to see him go but the unfortunate reality is like you can’t pay everyone s Gardner is going to get what like close to $25 million a year probably on his next deal you have a bunch of these guys from the 2022 class who need to be paid so sometimes you have to make those tough decisions uh and I would choose uh Michael Carter over DJ Reid he’s you know a few years younger the slot cornerback position doesn’t make nearly as much as outside corner so that’s another Factor as well well um I I think he’s done everything you could have possibly asked for during his time with the Jets so far as a you know late round pick turns into one of the best slot Corners in the game uh I I would look to give him a contract extension and hopefully avoid a Bryce hup situation where they didn’t do this a year ago and then unfortunately lost him so uh of that crop I would be hoping that Michael Carter gets a deal done all right Matt you could pick where we go next in this conversation we talked about training camp story lines there’s some big ones like reic and then there’s a bunch of ones outside of that that I go huh I don’t know if I’d call it a big one like in in the past there’s like so many more things we’re looking at but this roster is pretty much set especially the offensive line a year ago at this time we had no idea who the five guys were going to be for a week one they’ve had their Five Guys in place since March 15 what to you are some of the other top training camp storylines to watch for that you’re going to be following yeah so like obviously keeping close eye on the rookies and the young guys but we were talking like position groups just now and I think safety is going to be a spot where there’s going to be a lot of debate whether the Jets are good enough at that position or not uh Chuck Clark coming off the injury I’m a really big fan of him with it during his time in Baltimore and was excited for him to be here last year unfortunately gets hurt I’m kind of interested to see where he is in you know returning from the injury uh and then what they plan to do with Tony Adams and and Ashton Davis uh you know Tony Adams is more of a free safety than Ashton Davis is but we saw Ashton take a nice leap last year in his play and Tony Adams is going into his second year as a starter so what kind of growth does he have and then obviously like you still have names like uh Justin Simmons sitting out there on the open market like I’m sure there’s going to be some Rumblings if they’re struggling if some of those young guys are struggling early on in training camp about adding a veteran so I’m I’m keeping a close eye on the safety room although I’ll admit like I’m not that’s not a make or break position for me if they’re if that’s their weakest spot you could live with that you can’t be weak on the edge you can’t be weak at outside corner uh you can’t be weak at offensive line or quarterback wide receiver in this league um so if it’s safety that’s something that you’re a little bit questioning I think that’s okay and that speaks to the strength of this Jets roster you could get away with it when your dline and secondary in The Corner Room is as good as the Jets currently have it yeah exactly right like and again of course you want to have the best of everything and I referenced it earlier PFF talked about the the Jets having the number one defensive line they also gave the Jets the number one corner du and the number one linebacker Duo so again like if you have one weak spot and it’s that safety Duo then you could kind of make up for it with how strong they are at linebacker and corner and defensive line like it’s going to be okay if they don’t have the number one safety group in the league 10 weeks from tonight the New York Jets are on opening night Monday night against the San Francisco for uniters Jets openup training camp later this month July 23rd is report date I think for the rookies it’s July 18th for veterans it’s the 23rd First onfield full team practice is July 24th so enjoy summer Jeff fans because soon enough training camp will get underway one of the other things I wanted to bring up Antonio kardi announced that he will be a coaching inter with the Jets for training camp this summer he thanked Robert Salah in a Twitter post for for having him so your thoughts on Coach Crow being added to the Jets coaching staff this summer I love it I was a big fan of Antonio crom Marti when he was here with h with the Jets I think he made up a dominant safety Duo for a few years with derell Rivas and I love when the Jets bring back guys from a really good ERA of Jets football they did something similar a few years ago when Leon Washington was what a special teams coach I believe um so they’ve done this kind of thing in the past it’s weird to me watching guys or seeing guys that I grew up watching become coaches now like it makes me feel really old but Antonio Kari working with this group of Corners I think he’s only going to be a positive I loved kardi and he had does have some coaching experience he’s coached at the high school level he coached for I think a full year under under Jimbo Fisher when Jimbo was still at Texas A&M I’m going to pull up the tweet from Crow and put it on the screen for everyone to see he tweeted this last night 16 hours ago I’m grateful for the opportunity I have to do the Bill Walsh internship with the New York Jets for fall Camp ready to learn as much as I can during this time thank you coach Salah and your staff for this opportunity back to one jet drive love Crow had him on the show last year Jet fans so certainly check that out if you want to watch back that interview in fact actually that interview with Crow was earlier this year it was before free agency started so it wasn’t even last year it was so much has happened with the Jets I forgot when that conversation actually happened so maybe I’ll repost that on the channel for those who missed him when we had him on but anyway yeah I love this and you know what I love seeing to mat seeing Nick mangled work with Joe titman during one of the OTA practices this uh this spring yeah I mean a Ring of Honor jet working with a young Jet Center yeah injected in my veins I’m really excited for Joe titman in year two kind of just getting him in one position right he bounced between guard and Center last year uh I’m I have very high expectations for him I thought all things considered he was fine last year I wouldn’t say he was dominant but he showed some flashes and I think with much better guard play next to him that’s only going to make things easier on him completely midnight and Matt o ly we will get to that coming up as far as this offense goes Matt o Aaron roders will be there he’ll be ready to roll what are your thoughts on Rogers and his offense overall entering training camp yeah uh I am excited to see Aaron roders out there on the football field no longer in Egypt or on the other side of the world doing whatever he is or at UFC ruffling some feathers but he looked good in in mini camp connecting with Garrett Wilson and for me it’s like just please for the love of God stay healthy and just get the connection in with some of these uh these younger guys and grow with the wide receiver room but I’m amped up for to be out there it was fun last year at training camp going in watching him sling the football around it’s going to be fun again this year are you ready for some training camp practices the fans going crazy I can’t wait to be out there I haven’t been out to one Jets Drive ever in my life so I’m excited yeah I went a couple times last year I want to make it out I’m not sure which dates yet um but I’m going to do my best to go out there a couple times it’s a it’s a blast to just watch it in person and there’s so many like um let’s talk Jets radio they I think they go to every single one they post Clips every single practice that’s available so shout out to all the people that go and post clips for those who can’t be the best Jets team I’ve ever seen so uh it’s going to be hard to comprehend the Jets winning more than 11 games but roster damn good they should be able to do it cops right said I’m so pumped for JJ I year ago no one had Quincy Williams turning out to be a first team All Pro Player is it possible Germaine Johnson who made the Pro Bowl last year as an alternate takes another step forward and makes an all pro team this year does he had that type of Talent on this defense the chance to do what Quincy did last year I hope so that’d be awesome I don’t think I’m predicting that I think he’ll take another little bit of a step forward but I think he’s going to be like really great against the run and someone who gives you like eight to 10 sacks a year and I don’t know if that’s enough to be an all proo with how many guys in the league give you 15 plus sacks um it’s very very challenging for him to take that jump I hope he does that’d be great for the Jets but I think he’s going to be you offensive line 100% that that that to me is such an underrated storyline with the Jets it’s not just that they have improved the offensive line it’s that they’ve had all offseason OTAs mini camp Etc with the same group like it’s established who the five guys are and like yeah obviously injuries happen in training camp sure but in theory you’re talking about five months of chemistry and cohesion I try to I try to chat back on that isman show it says 15 and two you know and I just think I just think this is gonna be magic this year you know I’ve watched everything you know basically on YouTube or Jet’s Channel and um you know there’s just huge magic but but then I see the other side of the coin you know I live I’m you know I’m I’m only an hour away from Miami and I put that news on and with the sports section and they’re trash talking to Jet they’re thank you they’re trash talking the Jets and saying that they’re gonna beat us twice and I just get fed up with that I’ll tell you what Keith they will not beat the Jets twice if you look at the games last year I mean congrats to the Dolphins on defeating Tim Bole that game should have been 10-6 at halftime before the F Mary and then the Zack Wilson LED jets in that second debacle of a game like the Jets at the bear minimum should be able to split with the dolphins that that’s the the expectation at the bare minimum you win at friends who I’ve known for many years I saw him in there too and uh you know he’s in bad shape right now and um you know they just they were doing radiation um on his brain this morning so that’s a tough call I don’t know how you get out of that and come back because you know when you think about it you may lose all your memory Bobby would lose his memory you how can you operate your show without your memory you know you guys know everything I’m not the analyst I’ve always said that I’m just a big Avid fan since I’m a little boy I’ve never let that go that comes first so um it’s a pleasure that you let me sign on with you and um you know I just just uh you know I’m looking I’m I’m I got my lab report this morning from my chemo and I’m in bad shape um but I’m I’m I’m gonna keep going he told now now they put me on this new medicine I’m I’m not I’m not trying to go off guard here about not talking about the Jets I’m talking about like life and um the thing is he’s gonna put me on a new set of drugs tomorrow I’ll be in there tomorrow morning at 8:30 and uh he says if these drugs work that you’ll be free of cancer in September let’s go Keith that’s great news well keep be done with this in September because I go four days a week you know it’s a half a day each time and um you know different different two different hospitals but I have the support of you guys here um other guys are going to have to pay so I think it’s more affordable for them to be able to like lock in Carter like I basically have just accepted that right so what you think okay I got you um Matt I don’t know if you guys saw this week I’m sure you did on on Twitter sphere and PFF rated the Jets the number one defensive line in the NFL and then I think it was them as well that came out with the best Duos for linebackers and safety or linebackers and corners and also rated us we’re the best linebacker Duo and the best corner Duo so Matt I just want to know do you agree that we’re the best for all three positions defensive line linebacker Duo Corner Duo would you replace anyone in the league and and if not how [ __ ] cool is that yeah honestly I I think you can make a really strong case that they deserve to be number one which is like I said that that’s awesome they should be a fantastic fantastic unit this year the one spot that’s a little bit weaker on the defense is safety but I think you can live with that um I mean I I don’t I don’t have an argument to put anybody else in front of them right now that’s how good this defense is going to be this year yeah I thought that was awesome that we just have the best in the league Jake one more one more thing before I get off basketball wise har and Stein obviously signed this morning with the Thunder can you huge Miss for the Knicks I think that’s going to imp that impact them a lot more than people think can you name me five better centers in the playoffs or or just that you would want on your team in the playoffs than harste no I mean he’s a really good player but I I like we can’t sit here and be surprised right the Knicks can only offer him 18 million a year he got 29 million a year like I don’t I don’t blame him for taking the money it sucks but this was expected can I follow up with this would you rather have Julius Randall on your team in the playoffs or hardenstein on your team in the playoffs I still think you got to say Randall man because you still need stars and R and R we have never seen this version of Randall play with this team team where he doesn’t need to be the number one or in a lot of games probably the number two with Bridges there I guess so I guess I guess I’m on the train where I don’t think Randall’s game translate to the playoffs as well as other guys kind of like a Damon though is like you got to see Randle play with this version of the team like when they when they had him with OG and Brunson they were 15-2 in January and Randle wasn’t being asked to do you know what he what he had been asked to do in previous playoffs which is be the guy so I it’s a tough loss to the Knicks but it’s not shocking they’re just gonna have to you know figure out a way to get a better wanted to ask about Aaron Rogers because I don’t think we I don’t think we know what to expect really which is kind of interesting I think we all know he’s going to be elite but where would you let’s say like if they want to win the division where do you think he has to be because in my opinion like I think probably like a 75th percentile Aaron Rogers season gets you at least 11 wins so what do you what do you think like he has to be in order for them to get like you know 11 12 wins or win the division uh wi win the division I think he has to play like a top 10 quarterback to be a playoff team I think he has to be in the top 15 which I think at the bare minimum he’s doing that yeah he definitely will I I think I think even less I think I think if he was like a top 20 quarterback in the league they make the playoffs easily but like I said I think like I think if he has like probably like three fours of what of like his MVP season I think that’s enough to win the division because it might be if there’s not other devastating injuries around him like you know what I mean like if you if you assume that he’s that version of himself and you know you don’t have catastrophic injuries to the offensive line or God forbid something to Bree or Garrett Wilson then that that should be enough 100% I think I think it’s funny how people talk about the fact that he didn’t play that great in 2022 even though he did like if he if he plays like 2022 Aron Rogers he’s better than Tua that’s for sure so he’s at least the second best quarterback in the division at least if he plays like 2022 back to me oh Gary couple of things first Nate is a terrific caller Nate is one of the most underrated callers on the shop especially when it comes to basketball he’s he’s a he’s a great basketball fan he’s really knowledgeable talk Hoops with it seems like you guys have a have a kinship you and ni I didn’t know he a big Hoops fan he’s a big Hoops fan he he was cooling me on some stuff he’s he’s a good caller um and I kind of agree with him on hartenstein look I guess you gotta take Randall and I love Randall he’s from Texas I love Randall he’s from Dallas but a lot of times I feel like there like the Bradley Beal effect like he has these great numbers but in a sense sometimes they’re kind of like empty numbers like he took a bunch of shots he scored a bunch of points he got eight rebounds but how much impact did he really have on the game I mean Gary he’s been he’s been on an all NBA team two of the last three years I I get it but that’s what I mean like Bradley Beal’s been all NBA teams right how much better does Bradley Beal really I’m not saying G like be of course not but R Randall being there his presence like you can’t double team Brunson then like like he his presence opens things up for the rest of the team you need another scorer they were a scorer short last year like Bridges is a nice player he’s not a score Randall could score he can create his own shot that that matters and then the I agree with that I like R I’m not trying to say rand’s trash he’s not he’s a very very good player obviously he’s the third option in a lot of these games it’ll be nice when Dante becomes the second option or OG’s feeling it or Bridges is having one of those games like you they need they they they need to see it through with Julius Randle he’s a damn good player who now is slotted properly in what his role would be on a championship team does it sound weird when you say this like the Knicks have a championship caliber roster does that sound weird to you saying that out loud well yeah because I haven’t seen in my life yeah um as far as Rogers playing in the preseason look if I had a fighter who was older and he said I’m not going to do any sparring this Camp then I’m gonna say well then we can’t fight because you’re not going to be ready for fight night and and I understand season 17 games not one night but if you want to win the division you’re gonna have to beat up Buffalo and you can’t just get up to a slow start and say one and two is okay or you and still expect to win the division I don’t understand this new thing where it’s like just out the preseason how you going to be ready for week one you got one your tough that’s why he wanted to play last year I I agree with you I think if he want look if he wants to play I I have I have no issue with that you know like I think I think it makes sense for him to want to go out there and and play a driver or two I I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that I I want him to play a healthy amount I mean I’m just not gonna play every down obviously but he had he didn’t play last year so he hasn’t really played since the end of 2022 that’s a year and a half he hasn’t played football and he he’s gotta go if you’re worried about him getting hurt like it’s a violent game people get hurt there’s not much you’re G to do about if he gets hurt he gets hurt but I have to have him at 100% for San Francisco or close to it I can’t have him say all right we’ll just give the San Francisco game away and still think all right we’re gonna give games away and still win the division it’s it’s a tough division to win I would only put him out there if he’s W with the starting offensive line for the one that you drives last year you know so I think that’s what’s what’s coming here I’m I’m good with that um and last thing I was talking to this to some Nick fans I think the Knicks made a better move trading for Bridges than even signing Paul George right because Paul George would change your offense now he’s got to handle the ball which takes the ball out of brunson’s hands if you get Bridges bridges pits any system right you can play Bridges handle the ball he can play off the ball he can play on the wing he can play in the mid-range he can take the ball he can do whatever he wants offensively so actually think it’s weird as it sounds Bridges is a better option for this version of the next and Paul George I I think I think he fits because as you talked about look at the contracts the durability you you’re not asking Bridges to play a role he’s hasn’t proved he suited the play like he went to the NBA finals and as the number three guy on a team or even a number four guy depending on how you feel about um what’s his name Aton on that team a couple years ago so yeah I mean I I think I think Bridges was the perfect move for what the Knicks needed now is it enough to get by Boston we’ll see I mean part of it is being healthy too as we saw on the the East this year but I think the Knicks are in the best position they have been in to compete for a title in 25 years and then Paul George going to Phil is that is that a solution or is that a problem he’s a very good player when he plays and Beed same injury question marks and I think that contract is gonna age like milk he’s 34 and he’s sound to Max Ste I rather I rather Bridges than Paul George with Paul George he’s got to handle the ball now you’ve taken the ball out of Maxi’s hand who’s one of the best downhill players in the league like now Paul George has to be a ball handler because that’s what he does you’re not GNA get Paul George to take him and put him on the wing so this I think that’s more of a of a problem than a solution to Philadelphia well Gary let me say this to you happy Bobby Bia day is
