  1. This month will absolutely tell the tale for the 2024 season. There are nine (9) games against the two teams that are ahead of us in the division. I would say the Pirates must win at least 5 and really more like 6 of those games while playing plus-.500 ball over the other opponents to be in genuine contention come August 1st. A successful stretch like this would put us in second place and 3 or 4 over .500 headed into August. Not great, but definitely a good place to launch a legitimate run at a playoff spot. At this point I don’t know that it is realistic to think we could overtake Milwaukee for the division title, but St. Louis is definitely within reach and honestly they don’t scare me. I think they have overachieved and I think the Pirates, on paper, are better than them.

As others have described, it all comes down to what can be done to realistically improve the lineup for a second half run at a wild card. Taylor Ward is probably the most likely candidate to come to Pittsburgh, with Tommy Pham the fallback option. I would love to see a center fielder brought in and Jazz Chisholm certainly fits that bill unless he is a total clubhouse cancer. I think two better than average veterans like these could be acquired for a price that would sting but not throb. Probably Ashcraft, Peguero, and 2 or 3 lower minors lotto tickets would get this done.
