Lakers made an offer for Klay Thompson, Surprised he chose the Mavs? | NBA | FIRST THINGS FIRST

impromptu Rob pinka roast I was about to say like that’s what it is report that newest mck Klay Thompson turned down a 4-year $80 million deal from the lake show that seems like a good offer Nick you didn’t like this why because it’s not that’s that offer could not have been made they it’s not an if if if I can’t sign it it’s not an offer and I like so the like hey maybe we could Cobble together 4 years 80 if you say you want to come here give give me some time to work my months because here here’s the deal the Lakers don’t have 18 because it doesn’t have to be 20 million a year because it can scale up a bit they don’t have 18 million to offer for this year and so what teams with well-run front offices historically do is before the meet Brew you tell me because you’ve been not quite in the meetings but closer to the meetings than I’ve been they clear out the space beforehand so it’s ready and ready to go so like hey we can do this right now before you leave before you go check out the great Lakefront real estate in Dallas you’re looking at like no that’s usually how it’s done the way it’s typically done in my experience with the Lakers is after missing out on a Target that you publicly pursue you float out there some numbers that you think is going to get you good PR but then this happens and so so like no so I don’t I don’t buy it and I one other thing I must say for folks that are I guess new to the American tax code the state of California and the state of Texas did not recently undergo some massive tax changes that have now all of a sudden made Dallas a free agian destination when it hasn’t been for a decade and made the Lakers out in the cold when it had always been the place my whole life up until roughly 10 years ago so I just this idea it’s what’s the taxes what are you going to do about the taxes I don’t know man Dr bus never had a problem getting free agents with those taxes and Mark cubin forever missed out on free agents despite the taxes so I this whole idea of well you know they just it’s unfair it’s just the the state taxes man what are you going to do capitalism I it’s the whole thing irritates me beyond belief yeah I mean look what the Lakers you’re right in that front office is either clear the money or they have deals in place right you somewhere right here soon as you agree we making this trade and they tried to trade D’Angelo Russell to the Warriors in a signning trade that would have been able to get clay back they didn’t the Warriors didn’t want they’ve been there done that they’ve had that experience here’s the CH now so you’re right look last year when they gave player options when they signed like Christian Wood and Jackson Hayes cam reddish they small like two3 million do player options but all those guys picked them up this year and D of picked this up and that took away whatever money they might have to spend in free agency d I think realized there’s not this huge Market out there for me okay so that’s why he opted and remember after the playoffs he thought oh I’m about to you know capitalize Jackson Hayes picked up a player option of the league minimum he like he’s like you know what if I turn down the league minimum it might not be out play but regular season he loved him I I don’t have a problem with Jack SES but but yeah they so that money isn’t out there and next year the teams with money aren’t that good other than Philly and there that’s gone and so there there isn’t much of a market for DLo so they could not clay was just like I I’m not sitting here waiting all summer possibly for you guys to find a trade partner for D’Angelo Russell just so that’s why he went to Dallas and maybe also by the way maybe if all things were he still May would ra but this idea that the Lakers were able to offer him 4 for8 they weren’t and as far as the other things the Lakers had going for it you mocked me yesterday I do not care don’t say it well I don’t know here’s what Michael Thompson said yesterday on the radio when he was asked about congratulating clay for going with the Mavs so here’s my question Wilds I’m going to ask it because you called it a Rob Pinker Ro session and I don’t mean for that to be the case but I have a question what does he do Rob pinka yeah what’s his what does he do and what what evidence do we have that whatever he does he’s good at it that’s my question he he won the championship the okay so you built a team that you always seem to pick what do you mean I mean when there’s when you you pick them over Denver and you know I Pi very optimistic theam if they beaten Denver you probably would going to pick them to win it off no I no I that was I I had on the show that I thought the Lakers would be out of gas if they beat Denver so okay so we can flip it and put it on that my overestimation of what LeBron’s going to be able to do in the playoffs is made clouded some predictions that’s fair enough that is I’m not Bing on the predictions but I’m like you always pick them and you you but hold on to be clear you had given pinka credit for this roster in the past no no like at the beginning of the year on wait wait wait a second here this we’re not going to rewrite the history of I’m just asking said that no the I you all year long we argued about how good the Supporting Cast was that you we would have the arguments on this show that you guys would say you like the supporting guest I would say I didn’t I thought them standing bad at the trade deadline was a massive mistake I now I applauded them for not going after Kyrie but it turns out I was wrong on that front but I I I would I am not trying to be unfair but if I don’t think anyone looks at Rob pink and says you know what guys like Bobby marks 2.0 when it comes to understanding the CBA he’s just a wizard No in fact he gives out player options to entice minimum contract guys that then create hurdles for the team because by the way also under the new CVA you can’t include multiple minimum contract guys in a trade so you can’t even bundle those guys who you might not want on the team anymore so if it’s not CBA Wizardry it then the GM’s job and it’s not look I mean look at this guy’s prusty as draft resume then it’s the recruitment part of it yeah the relationships part of it that’s why you hire the agent turn GM is because of the relationships in theory and my question is what evidence do we have of it that he’s good at that part that’s all I’m asking so if we want to say Nick you’re wrong about the Lakers a lot so be it but that’s a different conversation that the what evidence do we have that he’s good at the key things one has to do to run an NBA front office I mean so many most teams are having these problems we talking about Denver losing players every year that helped them win a championship you know Philadelphia I mean they gave up they chose Ben Simmons over Jimmy Butler right and now and that GM lost his job but but I’m just saying throughout the league you can point to things like I’m not trying to defend Rob pela I’m just saying you just taking this opportunity to pounce on him and I don’t think he’s doing the worst job than anybody else golden state is a mess right now like you see this this is happening all over the league you just want to jump on him cuz they got LeBron LeBron’s 39 that’s a big part of their problem he’s not what he he’s great still but he’s not what he used to be they got Anthony freaking Davis we say every day on the show they’re one of a handful of teams with two top 15 players is Austin Reeves garbage is Ry hamur garbage I mean they’re decent role play I’m just saying like I just don’t think it’s fair to just use this as an opportunity to rip Rob I’m not saying he’s great he’s made mistakes but I just want to know I just want to know the the the the the the the pros to go along with the cons and and you mentioned Golden State I don’t know that Golden State’s run well anymore the guy who built that team’s on TV now the the the Philly example it cost that guy that in some weird tweets about collar his job and other things like these guys there’s to me when you have a in 10 days two very public Pursuits and both times you’re left at the altar once when you create the pursuit out of thin air I think for PR in order to then go higher JJ and the other one when you do have the built-in advantages of prestige franchise dad played here is a California guy grew up a Lakers fan all of it and you don’t have your ducks in a row to make that happen and instead you you’re the Lakers you lose out on it to a team that always lose out on free agents question should be asked I the point I am making is the Lakers used to have a built-in Edge when it came to free agent acquisition when it came to players I I’ve seen that they had Jerry West oh right they had a great GM yeah but he Roba league is not Jerry West on that we can agree who I tell me the one who is no nobody’s Jerry West but there’s a big golf it’s a lot of do picked up a little bit there thanks for watching subscribe here to get more from the show and to check out clips from other shows on FS1

  1. Nick will trash Lakers front office repeatedly, and will inexorably
defend LeBron against any and all criticism and swears he's being impartia. . Nick is the ultimate LeBron fan boy

  2. if klay went there he would be blamed for them being 7th seed and getting bounced, they are a toxic environment if not for their name nobody would want to go there

  3. Nick needs more intelligent co-host if he wants to have actual intellectual sports conversations. With these two he's better off with light and humorous stuff

  4. Glad Brussard pointed out that Lebron is part of the problem, how old he is and that he's not as good as he used to be. They're expecting a lot and he can no longer deliver at that level. Other teams see it and players see it. That's why they don't want to play in LA.Look at Paul George. He could have wanted to stay in LA and join the Lakers, but he knows Philly has a better shot to win so he moved cross country. Klay knew it too. So Lebron giving up money is not so much so generous on his part. It is a sign of desperation since he needs a lot of help to have a chance to win.

  5. No team were even talking about acquiring @DeMar_DeRozan until the @Lakers showed interest now all of a sutton the Miami Heat is trying to bid for him. Wow the Conspiracy toward LeBron & Lakers are very real. Teams & Organization’s are literally conspiring against~em it’s pretty clear. Wow!!!!

  6. As much as Nick claims he never picked the Lakers to win it all, I distinctly remember him saying if the Lakers beat Denver – who he picked to beat Denver – they’re winning the Finals

  7. The hate towards Lebron continues to amaze me. If he was a criminal I would understand, but he is a guy who gives back his community. He is a guy who has opened the doors for so many yet that his good enough.

  8. Didn't lebron opt out therefore money is there to offer klay i and then lebron would resign with lower? Which they bloaviated about the other day. Nicks shilling for lebron is insane. Also im sure lakers also offered a trade?

  9. Finally, thank you guys… someone finally reporting correct information. These other sites and people like ESPN not reporting facts

  10. This is plain and simple.. Klay just didn't want the heat or isn't one with the HEAT… It's not about the money.. He wants to play ball without too much scrutiny

  11. I've lived in California my entire life, the taxes and cost of living have shot up to an extreme level in the last 10 years. So YES that is a valid reason someone would leave California like millions already have.
