Did The Vancouver Canucks ACTUALLY IMPROVE Their Roster?

Did The Vancouver Canucks ACTUALLY IMPROVE Their Roster?

[Music] so I’ve been seeing a lot of Buzz around the Vancouver kuu social media World in regards to whether or not the team actually improved or not with their free agent signings from yesterday now as of recording this audio all of the free agent signings that the Vancouver connect made will be talked about with the exception of Nate Smith who is probably more going to be the Sheldon D replacement in abbottsford we’re going to ignore him for this commentary just to make things a little bit easier but we had ourselves a graphic posted by the Canucks Army crew yesterday after the Canucks made these signings and they asked the simple question did the Vancouver Canucks get better into Vancouver You’ve Got Jake de Brusque kefir Sherwood Danton Heinen Derek forbo Vinnie de har and Yuri Patera and out you have yourselves Elias Lindholm Sam laferty Elia mckv Nikita zadorov Ian Cole and Casey desmith now if you had not seen the Scoops then okay we’ll talk about this one more time Elias Lindholm signed with Nikita zadorov in Boston Sam lafy went over to Buffalo Elia mck was traded to Chicago Ian Cole had signed with the Utah Hockey Club and Casey the Smith signed with the Dallas Stars so this is kind of the tour that we’re seeing because a lot of Canuck fans have been in sort of saying hey like the team hasn’t really gotten any better the team was better at the beginning of the playoffs and there were like polls posted out here people asking whether or not the Canucks improved as a hockey team and I’m seeing a lot of people being oddly cynical about it for the most part I’d say the most prevalent sentiment like the most widely agreed upon opinion is that the Vancouver connuck playoff roster at the beginning of the Stanley Cup Playoffs is better than what the Canucks roster is right now and I won’t disagree with that per se but I don’t think it’s as Doom and Gloom as some people seem to be making it out to be oh the Canucks signed these guys they’re not as good as the guys they had before let’s just hold our horses a little bit and try to see where everything is coming from because when you think about the salary that was handed out to a bunch of the guys that are coming in honestly the only quote unquote bad contract that you could say is there is is probably the Vinnie de har contract 2 million bucks is a lot for that kind of a player but you take Vinnie de har and you add on Derek forart it’s a lot less combined than what Nikita zadorov and Ian Cole both ended up going for now of course we recognize that Ian Cole probably wasn’t somebody that Canuck wanted to keep around Nikita sidorov you could say the opposite but value to Value based off of what else was going on in free agency I’m honestly fairly okay with the moves that they had made I know I know a lot of people have been talking about the idea of Meers extension and Vinnie de her’s contract stockpiling up into an unfavorable spot because you could have used that $5 million to get a legit top four guy and there were options of people throwing out there but at the end of the day it seems like Patrick Alvine and his crew are very intentional with the guys that they keep around especially on D as we said yesterday they like Big D so so de her forbort Meyers Susi they all fit that mold and unfortunately some of the other top four caliber right-handed guys other than Meyers aren’t really all too big or they lack the same caliber of size that these Vinnie de hares and Myers is are going to achieve so from a fundamental standpoint of what the Canucks are trying to build I get what they’re doing here I respect it honestly I don’t disregard the opposing perspective that says they could have gotten a better Decor if they had just used their money more collectively but I am personally okay with the decor now I will say Vinnie de har and forbort is a slight downgrade from the caliber of talent that a guy like Nikita zadorov is able to bring Ian Cole you could say that he actually played better than both of these guys too but in the playoffs Ian Cole was absolutely terrible especially against the Oilers so I guess it kind of evens itself out there but the Canucks are indeed spending Less on this bottom pair compared to what they were doing last year or what they could have been doing had they resigned Nikita zadorov so I’m honestly okay with it meanwhile up front you can say that out of the fourward that the Vancouver conu lost and gained Jake debrusk kefir Sherwood Danton Heinen lindol lafy and mckv you could very well say that the most talented asset of the six is Elias Lindholm but I like the way that the conu Army graphic went out there and labeled these out because they kind of have the parallels side by side Jake debrusk and Lind Holm were both the guys seeking long-term deals and big money contracts you could say that on their previous teams they might not have been utilized all too well they might have been played a little bit further down in the lineup and they were looking for more opportunity Jake debrusk is going to get that opportunity playing in the top six with Alias Pon Elias Lindholm is going to get that opportunity in Boston because he’s going to be their first line Center all in all it works out the best for both of these players and for the cap hits too it works out very well the Bruins didn’t want to pay 5.5 million to a guy like Jake debras who is not going to be a super important player the canx didn’t want to go 7.7 with Elias Lindholm plus if Jake debrus is able to play with py and actually be good if Alias Pon is able to bring out of debrusk what he brought out a Kenco in his first season what he brought out a besser during a few years then this could be a fantastic addition for the next s years I’ve seen a lot of Canucks fans trying to compare the Jake debrus profile and what he could be to that of JT Miller because JT Miller had a pretty similar Point production status when Miller became a Vancouver canu which coincidentally was at at the same age that Jake debrus is at right now so it kind of works out that way but we can make another video about that later on in the week though you talk about the second place guys on this list though kefir Sherwood and Sam lafy at Sam LA’s absolute Peak he plays pretty much exactly like kefir Sherwood plays lafy plays with Pace he can drive to the front of the net he can score pretty goals but in the second half of the year and in the playoffs he was invisible kefir Sherwood does all those same things and his shooting is also a big threat like lafes is in fact I’d say that isolated one-on-one ke for Sherwood probably has the better shot than Sam lafy lafy scored a bunch of goals by driving to the goal and power forwarding it through everybody ke for Sherwood can snipe it if you give him that time not to mention the completely agitative qualities that Sherwood does play with this is a guy that is versatile you can play him throughout the lineup he annoyed the hell out of the Vancouver Canucks in the first round series against the Nashville Predators so I think this is a really great pickup for the price tag especially when you consider what Sam lafy went for in Buffalo and how ineffective lafer was towards the end of his Vancouver conu tenure and then you talk about the third guys here Danton Hein and Elia mckv it’s night and day sure MV might be the fastest player out of these guys but other than his foot speed he doesn’t provide anything else he can’t win a puck battle to save his life he can’t score to save his life he can’t create offense to save his life dandon Heinen at least can do that he’s got some pretty okay wheels too he had scored a short-handed goal against the Vancouver Canucks earlier this year in Boston that was an absolute gamebreaking killer goal so Danton hinen does have what it takes to compete and do similar things to El mckv he was also played on the penalty kill too in Boston D hen was not to mention the fact that he is a Langley guy he played for the Richmond sock guys he was hovering around this area growing up so obviously the hometown guy connection makes this a lot more impactful and with the dollar amount being so much cheaper than Elia mv’s it’s a night and day difference so in my opinion obviously when you think about the top tier talents I’d say that lindol was the most talented forward that Canucks lost zadorov was the most talented defenseman that canu lost and you can say that the most talented kanuck forwards in defense that they got are not as good as LOM and zadorov the depth rounds itself out better with this current version of the team and you can say that there’s a lot more security financially because these dollar amounts that the Canucks guys have now are a little bit lower than what the lind Holmes and zadorov and stuff could have gotten then you go over to goal tending and you talk about yri Peta and Casey the Smith I honestly don’t think it’s that important anymore when you consider how good arer covs was and how they sort of want to project him as to being a number two guy in Vancouver if he has to fight it out with Peta for that 1 a 1B or not 1 a that 2 a or 2B spot then okay that’s totally okay we’ll see what happens good competition never hurt anybody right especially when it comes to fighting for a job but either way let me know your thoughts in the comment section below about the Vancouver Canucks and whether or not they actually did get better or worse I’ll agree with the sentiment that says that the talent sealing of the guys now compared to the roster at the start of the playoffs is technically lower but I do think that there is good potential for growth with this team and there’s a lot more depth and flexibility financially compared to the roster that the playoff team had so let me know your thoughts in the comment section below about Jake de brus Kei for sure with Danon hin and forbert de her name Patera as well as lindol La mck zadorov Cole and Casey to Smith I hope you enjoyed this vsh troll 99 and bye [Music] [Music]

  1. Just by not overpaying and overextending any new contracts, the Canucks won.
Everyone thinks that by signing someone for $9M per year gets you a $9M player.
    That rarely works out.
Just getting rid of Mikheyev made the team better.

  2. Bit early to say but our forward core is definitely deeper and alvin seemed to hand pick these players who look like toccet style players

Our Dcore I think remained the same. Losing zadorov sucks but not having ian cole is a positive. But have to see how the new dman play

  3. Younger player in DeBrusk, didnt overpay too many additions, and with what the training staff was able to do with certain players last season gives me some optimism that this could still be a competitive team. That being said, thet could pull off something really impactful at the next trade deadline to help us address more issues, but I'm willing to give this group a chance.

  4. The forward group 100% got better in my opinion and the d core 3rd pairing got slightly worse. Who knows the 3rd pairing might do well under the Canucks system.

  5. They will make one of those new defencemen formidable, my bet is on desharnais. Not a lot of NHL time, big RHD d man that was good in the PK. They literally fixed myers in a year and turned zadorov into a super star in half a season. Let’s not act like zadorov was anything like he was in the play offs before. Big Z had swagger and made hits, that’s replaceable.

  6. The Canucks are a deeper more balanced team. They also have a full season to get up to the right gear for the playoffs, unlike our team, with in season trades. Plus we now have room for future additions

  7. I don’t know if they got better … they were already a team that could have beat anyone but had to play without their starting goalie. Defense looks weaker but forwards look deeper, although small.

  8. I think they are about the small if not marginally better. But where they won is contract management giving us options to make moves in the future rather then being sink or swim on one contract.

  9. Fans….for the most part are just whining because the players THEY WANTED didn't get signed. Half of the morons wanted Stamkos at 9mAAV as well as Dumba plus their own favourites. The Canucks got faster AND better.

    PERIOD.

  10. heinen and sherwood are improvements over mikheyev and lafferty and come in at a better cap hit. lindholm knew where he was going to be signing long term and basically mailed it in as a canuck. didn't tank, just didn't put much into his effort on most nights. if petie is 'all better' this year coming up and debrusk and him get each other imo he will be a productive asset at a much lower cap hit. i like the moves on D. maybe not the fastest but they will punish opponents. ruthervin did great.

  11. People also have to add Hronek, Myers, Blueger and Joshua to this list. They could have lost them and they didn't so that's a win. This team has more depth and options now.

  12. I look at it this way. The actual top end talent was downgraded imo. Losing Zadorov and Lindholm. Hurts. Essentially the on paper replacements there are Desharnais(the hulking Dman) and Debrusk(the top 6 forward.)

In actuality, we got 2 guys for the top 6 in the afformentioned Debrusk, as well as Danton Heinen who will definitely see some minutes with Boeser and Miller and maybe form a much improved top 6 from last year with Petey running a line with Debrusk and Hogs. Petey gets some stability with 40-50 goals(maybe more) on his wings as well as BOTH the wingers having a motor and tough to play against.

The 3rd line stays Blueger, Dak, Garzy as arguably the best 3rd line in the league(edmontons 3rd projected looks really good on paper now too)

4th line of Suter at C, likely Sherwood and with a rotating cast of whoever is either A playing good, or B healthy including the likes of Podz, PDG, Åman, lekkerimaki, bains etc.

With this look at it, the overall forward core in theory is much stronger than it was with Lafferty, Mikheyev and Lindholm etc gone.

I think overall, the Defense made a lateral move, with the subtractions and additions when comparing the top end of it, as well as the middle. Zadorov is better than anyone we brought in, but the totality of what we brought in, I think is around what went out. We now have the reigning Norris winner who is going to have another year of experience as well as the trophy on his resume. He WILL be better this year too.

I think goaltending, once Silovs is signed to paper, should be better at the NHL level for sure. I don’t need to get too deep into it, but we all know he was lights out this year in the playoffs. I think you lessen Demmers workload to 50-55 games max, and you give Silovs the rest of the starts 27-32 games. Demko gets rest throughout the season to hopefully stay healthy without too much pressure to be a workhorse because he KNOWS he has a potential stud to literally back him up. Silovs gets a good amount of actual experience so he doesn’t get stale by riding the pine, and it’s better completion than the AHL players he would face, albeit, more regularly.(plus he essentially triples his NHL career starts in a single season, which is big for his development)

Overall, in theory, on paper, and hopefully in practice(no pun intended) I think the Canucks are a better team going into this season, than they were after game 7 of round 2 against Edmonton.

    We shall see.

  13. Noticeably improved offense across the board, obviously got Forbort and Desharnais to improve the PK, got Mikheyev off of the payroll with little consequence, and kept every UFA who was willing to stay for a good price. Defense is a bit worse overall, but you have to feel convinced that the Canucks can roll out four forward lines capable of scoring now after this overhaul to the roster. I think that the Canucks would have been feared a lot more around the NHL this year if only their special teams were a lot better, and these moves prove that the front office felt the same way.

  14. Whether they're better or worse remains to be seen in October. For me the real question is, did they do all they could to avoid a collapse? I argue, yes. Without question. There wasn't much more they could have done. Some wanted Zadorov and others wanted the big fish Guentzel, but in both cases, you're throwing a lot of money at one guy, and becoming the Leafs of the West – at best. What Allvin did was make the Canucks a team no one in the entire league is going to want to play against with or without a lot of painkillers and ice on hand and a team that should be incredibly deep. Adding Heinen was probably the most important piece. He's an 18 goal scorer (several times) who plays a bottom 6 role. Teams will have a horrible time trying to decide which line they want to match their top shutdown unit against and whoever they leave to their 4th line is going to get destroyed. Yes, they could have used another top 4 defenseman, but like it or not, there's a salary cap. Pettersson at his age was going to get paid and there was nothing they could have done about that. They got Louie DeBrusk's kid to play with Pettersson and that sounds great to me. Again, Allvin since taking over has said he wanted to build a team that would be an absolute nightmare to play against, and overall, I think they're scarier than they were last year. They might not have the flash of Zadorov, but I'd rather deal with last year's team than this one. This Canucks team looks like they want to hurt you.

  15. Lucky if they stayed the same or close. Forgetting about the other players already on the team? If the chemistry works there should be plenty to celebtate next year

  16. Offence is better! defense is par because we have room to move things still. Goaltending is a downgrade between peterka and, DeSmith but, am upgrade running Silovs as 1B

  17. Team is more balanced and fits better now than it did. Better top 6 with debrusk. Much better bottom 6 with Sherwood and heinen additions. Will be intresting who is with miller and boeser. Whether it’s suter or heinen or maybe someone like pods somehow jumps up. The defense may be a bit worse but I think adding the forwards balances things out I do think the team is better than last season overall
