Why Jordan Hicks is Cleveland Browns’ Best Kept Secret

Why Jordan Hicks is Cleveland Browns’ Best Kept Secret

Jordan Hicks new linebacker for the Cleveland Browns he was in OTAs and he was miked up and he’s showing you why the leadership genan runs deep in his veins and he’s gonna be the new voice of the Cleveland Browns defense what’s up y’all come on let’s go great energy huh start with energy uhhuh good to see you dog good to see you good to see you let’s go I can’t fall back on that that was stupid hey let’s go right right here yeah I’m here I’m here let’s go turn up hey let’s go here be man let’s bu our ass today man let’s complete complete complete every rep every snap every rep let’s work man hey okay loud noises scream come on here we go put it down put it down yeah talk to yourself I like it thank you Jesus chip to the flat chip to the flat and return oh he did not want that throw yeah I feel like I feel like it’s a quick you make one dude Miss instant you get off a block instantly and then shoot that’s what I’m saying then just find the ball I don’t want to see that I don’t want to see none of that I don’t want to see none of that it’s my side strong side my side hey turn this off turn this off during the conditional test I did this last week you going to be hearing me huff and pu no sir and that was courtesy of the cev brown shout out to the Browns and uh you you see Jordan Hicks out there man and and you know the the cool thing about that is man you know linebackers always got a certain type DNA you always know where a middle linebacker is because you see the constant communication the constant talking they’re the biggest cheerleader they’re the biggest people that are are there there to remind you is you see him talking about it you got the flat you got the flat right here he’s establishing himself as the communicator on the defense right and and when you’re a linebacker that starts day one just doesn’t start you know just when when the games start they’re getting used to hearing his voice they’re getting used to him calling out the plays getting used to him with the schemes you see him talking amping guys up in the beginning cheerleading right doing those things and the cool thing about linebackers is as a defensive lineman playing middle linebackers always know when stuff is like you be like hey man hey Jordan Hicks when when is the next team meeting they just be knowing like yeah hey team meetings at 420 we we get taped and ready to go at 4:30 we got a walk through on the field 4:45 you like yeah I don’t even got to have a watch you can set your time to a middle linebacker table to his his schedule they got the itinerary they are the proverbial coach on the field right you know you you see him hey I don’t want to see that man I got this side I got this it’s the communication man it’s just like you know you’re the center fielder you got to communicate you’re the shortstop you’re the captain out there you’re the catcher those positions up the middle are very poignant right when you look at the guys that are that are communicating most right on the defense it’s up the middle still the same way it’s the your quarterback it’s your center it’s your middle linebacker and it’s your deep safety those are the guys that people are talking and communicating the most and I think it’s very important that when you see a guy like Jordan Hicks he’s in OTAs doing that kind of stuff is is he understands that there’s a void and Anthony Walker had a certain communication style it’s just like being a catcher when you’re a catcher certain catchers catch with certain pitchers right uh Anthony Walker had way he communicated way that he broke the Huddle a way that he he got the you know guys into different checks right now it’s a situation where he’s in the middle they’re going to need that same type of leadership but he has to do it in his own way I think he’s one of the most underrated signings that they’ve had so far you go back and look at his tape against Minnesota with Minnesota he’s a guy that has some speed a guy that can can you know when you take a look at you know his numbers he could tackle and get guys on the ground um I think he’s an upgrade from Anthony Walker a slight upgrade awok was a guy that was a communicator he just couldn’t stay on the field and be healthy I look at what Jordan Hicks is going to bring to the table he’s not GNA beat a dynamic guy like J that’s your playmaker at linebacker right that’s your playmaker he’s your steady guy I still think the Browns need another linebacker like a diabat a Devin Bush um one of those guys a Nathaniel uh Nathaniel Watson which one of those guys are going to step up and take some more minutes right and give you some that Taki Taki gave you which was solid game playay understand where you at and make plays when you when the ball is brought to you right we just want guys in and in this defense you see him talking about to Isaac auro basically saying all you got to do is be ready to go and the ball gonna come to you you know what I’m saying so in this second year this defense I want to be anxious to see how quickly he gets up and running understanding where we’re going to go pointing out different things so um to me I think Jord Jordan Hicks is is going to be a very sneaky um a very sneaky good pickup for the Cleveland Browns I like it we just looking for one more and we need to do that with with some of those names that I mentioned uh before gonna be a very interesting Camp to see who pops that’s GNA be one of the camp battles very few Camp battles that’ll be available um with that linebacker position because I think a lot of the other stuff is uh pretty much sold up you’re just going through the motion trying to find guys to be play on special team

Find out why Jordan Hicks is the Cleveland Browns’ best kept secret on the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show! Garrett Bush breaks down the latest Browns news and why Hicks is a key player to watch.

Jordan Hicks knows a thing or two about Jim Schwartz’s defensive style.
Hicks played for Schwartz in Philadelphia from 2016-18 and started all 35 games he played over those three seasons. The Eagles went on a successful run in that stretch, and while Hicks missed a majority of the 2017 Super Bowl run with an Achilles injury, Hicks still found success in Schwartz’s system.

Six years later, the linebacker veteran is reunited with his former defensive coordinator, as he signed a contract with the Browns on March 14. He returns to the attack-oriented defense under Schwartz as defensive coordinator in Cleveland.

The Browns’ defensive success in 2023 was a major draw for Hicks. They led the league in total defense (270.2 yards per game), passing defense (164.7 yards per game) and third-down percentage at 29.1 percent. Hicks also had a number of connections who were a part of the Browns’ defense in 2023. He played with S Rodney McLeod in Philadelphia, as well as DT Dalvin Tomlinson and DE Za’Darius Smith during his two seasons with the Vikings. He’ll have the chance to reunite with Tomlinson and Smith, as Smith re-signed with the Browns on March 13 and Tomlinson is under contract.

“I have followed their careers and obviously got to play with them personally,” Hicks said. “And just watching them, talking to them, obviously, is a huge part of free agency and just understanding different situations.”

The Browns linebacker room saw some change this offseason, as free agents Anthony Walker Jr. and Sione Takitaki signed with other teams. However, Hicks still believes they can have a dynamic linebacker room alongside Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and newly signed Devin Bush.

“I think with the opening at linebacker and the talent that this group has, and this organization has, I think it’s a recipe for something special,” Hicks said.

Hicks has appeared in 122 games with 119 starts with the Eagles (2015-18), Cardinals (2019-21) and Vikings (2022-23). He has recorded 873 career tackles, 14.5 sacks, 13 interceptions, 11 fumble recoveries and six forced fumbles. Hicks has also registered at least 100 tackles in each of the past five seasons.

Owusu-Koramoah had a breakout season in 2023 as he established himself in Schwartz’s defense. He led the Browns with 98 tackles, while also adding 3.5 sacks, six passes defensed and one forced fumble. He finished fourth in the NFL with 20 tackles for loss during the regular season, with an additional four in the Wild Card game against the Texans.

Bush signed with the Seahawks for the 2023 season, and he played in 13 games with 37 tackles and five tackles for loss.

“You look at JOK and his natural ability. I mean, he’s all over the field. I’ve watched him for years now. Got a ton of respect for his game,” Hicks said. “Have played against and competed against Devin Bush multiple times. So got a lot of respect for those guys. Excited to get in the room and get back established, get back to playing football, because that’s what we do this for.”

He’s also heard about the culture of the Browns’ locker room, especially among the defense. Even though he hasn’t met several of his teammates yet, he picked up on it during the first few hours in CrossCountry Mortgage Campus.

It reminded of similarities from 2017, when the Eagles went on to win the Super Bowl that season. While Hicks was hurt for a portion of the season, he watched as different players stepped in and played important roles in their success. It created a culture in their locker room about supporting one another whoever was on the field and on the sideline.

The Browns experienced the same type of mentality during the 2023 season as they dealt with a plethora of injuriHicks is entering his 10th year in the league and knows that his level of experience in different situations, as well as his familiarity with Schwartz, can be beneficial in the linebacker room and the defense as a whole. During his four seasons with the Eagles – even as a young player – he took on a leadership role. With the Browns, he’s ready to do so once again.es to both sides of the ball and relied on the next man up mentality.
