Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) on X Aaron Civale to Brewers

  1. Underperforming expectations this year but with a history of some success. Under control through next year as well. I’m sure we didn’t give up much, seems like a very Brewers low risk mid reward move that could pay dividends.

  2. Can’t be giving much up for that. But if hook thinks he can fix him… In hook I trust

  3. Will repost what I put in the /r/baseball thread. I like it. I trust that they didn’t give up anything unreasonable, but as a prospect hugger it’ll still hurt.

It’s the kind of pitcher I had expected the Brewers would trade for. Someone below the top tier of starters available, but also controllable beyond 2024. Fedde would’ve been the top end of that market that I saw realistic, and someone like Cal Quantrill is what I had expected.

Civale fits that mould too. Also happened earlier than I had expected. 2022-2024 he has a FIP and xFIP just below 4, and an xERA even slightly better than that. Struggled a bit this year, but most of that seems due to an elevated HR/FB rate. Velo isn’t down or anything. Seems like someone who with a strong defense behind him and maybe some slight tweaks will be a good addition.

Now the only worry is that since he actually looks pretty good, has another year of control left, and the trade happened really early, is that he would cost a lot. I don’t think they’ll trade any of the true top prospects, but could still be a costly mix. I will be positive though!

  4. He has played for the guardians and rays……checks out. Looks like they are trying to find a more proven Tobias Meyers.

  5. Looking at Savant and noticing he’s good in the first 3 innings and falls off a cliff after that. Maybe a guy who could use an opener to aid him and see less of a lineup in a start.

Maybe we can combine him and Bryse to create one starter.

Curve and Sweeper have high spin rates and good whiff rates. His 4-seam is getting crushed and the split finger (not used often) the same. Lean into the sinker or cutter more I guess? Probably the cutter because it’s what historically has delivered the best results for him.

  6. For Mike Boeve possibly?

This breaks my ‘Never trade with the Rays’ rule. They are not very often wrong.

  7. Infielder at high A from what I read. 20th best prospect. I’m fine with it if he can eat innings and sometimes a change of scenery is good

  8. I’ve always liked Civale. Always thought he had great potential and has shown it before. And with Chris Hook and staff, I believe this could end up great.

  9. Rays fan here. Civales solid in the 1st-3rd innings but completely implodes after. He’s best used as a bulk guy during bullpen days or be prepared to score runs after the 4th inning.

  10. Plugs a hole. Likely not our last move for a starter but should end the rotation lottery we have had in that spot.

Basically free, Barrios upside is a right handed hitting Oliver Dunn three years from now.

When Civale is on he looks damn good. When he loses that edge it is Perralta levels of frustrating to watch.

  11. He was great for my fantasy team a year or two ago – I’m fine with this promotion to the Reals!

  12. Looking forward to the puzzled comments from these Rays fans after we turn this guy into Cy Young.

  13. I think this is a worthwhile trade. Buy low on Civale. The rays and Indians are also some of the top pitching teams in recent years so it’s a little concerning that he’s having a down year, but it’s very possible that the rays are just trading from a position of depth and liked Barrios.

I’d guess they don’t bump anyone to the bullpen prior to the All star break. We have 11 more games before then and 1 off day. I think they’ll let everyone get 1-2 more starts and see where things are at coming out of the break.

  14. Really really liked Civale at Cleveland. Having a tough year and you cringe anytime the Rays handpick a young IF, but this is a fair deal from a good place or depth in our system. Civale is a lot like Colin Rea but dare I say the raw stuff is a tick better. Let’s see what Hook can unlock but he is a throw the kitchen sink at you kind of guy. He’s got a very very nasty hammer of a curve.

  15. Interesting. I saw Barrios play in Beloit last night. He was probably the best player for the Timber Rattlers. 3-4, 3 runs, 2 SB. He’s batting .325 in High A this year. Didn’t know I was seeing his last game with the organization! Hopefully, this turns into a good payoff for the Brewers.

  16. Solid buy low for y’all. Hope you can tap into civale stuff. He has good stuff but just in consistent but maybe some Midwest love is all he needs 😢

  17. Anyone know what kind of stuff he has? I looked up his numbers, but I don’t see where you see pitch usages and velocity?
