The Chicago Bears Are LUCKY To Have Ryan Poles As GM Instead Of Joe Schoen | Hard Knocks Reaction

[Music] all right so I watched most of hard knock’s the offseason episode one last night which is featuring the New York Giants that’s their GM Joe Shane and I kind of was like you know what let’s talk about this on Chicago Bears now my name is Harrison Graham I thought he revealed some interesting things that really made me think one thing in particular that I’m really glad that the bears hired Ryan poles and not Joe Shane now I think Shane got hired first so who knows if he was higher or lower on the Bears list that doesn’t really matter at this point but I feel a lot more comfortable uh as a Bears fan and someone who covers this team than I would if I was a Giants fan or covering that team because I think it’s pretty clear who’s in the better situation moving forward so on today’s show we’re going to get into the first episode just a couple of things with Joe Shane uh and things that made me appre appreciate polls more and one area in particular that I think po made the right decision and Shane made the wrong decision as they each have big jobs as general managers in the National Football League and then we’ll get to a thing from PFF a little bit later as well I want to know did you guys watch Hard Knocks last night the uh first episode of the offseason uh edition first one ever why frees in for no I got to say it was better than I thought it would be um because I don’t think the Giants are that entertaining of a team but to get the kind of behind the scenes access to the GMS and execs uh pretty cool stuff so I’ll probably tune in again next week type why for yes type in for no let me know what you or if you guys watched all right let’s get to this here Joe Shane via Hard Knock talking about his quarterback the reality is Daniel Jones has had three serious injuries in two years we need to protect ourselves talking about offensive line he didn’t have much of a chance last year that’s legit our core four guys on the o line played Just 60 snaps together against Miami we had three practice squad guys playing for us you could have Pat Mahomes and he can’t win behind that I’m not giving up on him talking about Jones he’s under contract for three more years the best predictor of the future is the past couple things here one um the Mahomes thing is ridiculous if Mahomes is playing you always have a chance regardless of the situation uh but two if you watch it in the two uh front office execs he’s talking to when he’s saying that you almost get the feeling that he’s trying to convince himself that it’s like hey man if we just protect him if we keep him upright he can be the guy like and then he says the best predictor of the future is the past okay well what’s Daniel Jones done through five seasons and for you Bears fans watching which that’s mostly everyone watching I promise I will tie this back to the Bears in a second what has Daniel Jones done through five seasons that makes you be like yep like if we just just protect him he’ll be the guy he actually had an okay rookie year then he stunk for two years he was average to above average in 2022 and they had this fluke year where they won a bunch of close games and even won a playoff game against a fraudulent Vikings team they paid Daniel Jones then he comes back and is terrible last year before uh he did have the season ending injury which yeah he’s had some injuries like that that’s a part of it I’m not saying that’s not true but again I just like there was a couple of times this episode where I’m like it really feel feels like he’s convin trying to convince himself of like yeah like Daniel Jones like he could be the face of this offense because they got this into some saquin stuff too and they’re like all right if we get rid of saquin what’s our identity and it’s like Daniel Jones in a high octane passing attack I don’t think that’s going to be the Giant’s identity uh why is this relevant to the Bears well Ryan poles didn’t make the Joe Shane mistake Shane got fooled into paying Daniel Jones after 2022 when Jones wasn’t actually that good they just had some team success and whereas polls yeah Justin Fields very similar to Daniel Jones in a different manner you could argue who’s better that doesn’t really matter but clearly through three seasons we still didn’t have a clear answer on what Justin Fields was or could be if you don’t know by then pivoting is probably the right move and that is what Ryan poles did Joe Shane paid Daniel Jones $40 million per year and now he’s stuck trying to convince himself that can work out more from Shane here he said we’re paying the guy Daniel Jones $40 million it’s not to hand the ball off to a $12 million back talking about saquin my plan is to upgrade the offensive line and free agenc we’re picking at six there’s a chance an offensive weapon is there this is the year of Daniel and look I don’t blame the Giants for not paying saquon Barkley you should not pay a running back top dollar if you’re not a team ready to contend that I don’t have any argument with that but for one he signed Germain alumor in free agency that was the only offensive line move he made and he’s like a French starter uh did get Malle neighbors but the point is is like there’s a lesson here in all of this there’s a lesson and the lesson is this you better have a damn good idea what your quarterback is and what he’s going to be before you pay him big money and the Giants won a playoff game for the first time in 11 years and that convinced themselves we got our guy he ain’t that guy man like 12 months from now Daniel Jones I think there’s a great chance he’s on a different team because they’re going to cut him and take the $22 Million Dead capit they can’t do that now otherwise they probably would do it now but the the dead capit goes up to like 60 million if they do it now so they literally cannot do it uh but um I don’t know man it’s just like looking forward with Caleb Williams when it comes time to pay or pivot you better know if you’re going to pay him because what you don’t want to do is pay the wrong guy because then you’re stuck for two three four five years without really much chance of having success and I think it’s interesting too cuz Shane could have been the Bears and look I’m not here saying like Joe Shane isn’t a smart guy and that he hasn’t done some good things like he got Brian Burns for a pretty affordable price tag on VI a trade with Carolina like he I don’t think he sucks but the point is if you don’t do the quarterback stuff right nothing else matters what do we see for years with Ryan Pace he couldn’t figure out quarterback SO trading for khil Mack even though he was awesome here kind of a waste because you didn’t have a good enough offense because you didn’t have a good enough quarterback if you don’t get the quarterback right nothing else matters and the Giants are stuck whereas the Bears we don’t for sure know what kale Williams is going to be and they got a little luck to get that pick but if you were an average person betting who’s more likely to win a Super Bowl in the next 5 years I don’t think a single person would take the Giants over the Bears I think that’s pretty pretty clear so I just think it’s it’s fun and just exciting to point out that the GM the Bears have has acted in a better manner when it comes to evaluating quarterback play uh than the guy the Giants have which could have easily been the guy the had all right if you’re happy to have Ryan poles is the Bears GM type me in the comments down below I know I am um he’s done a really good job so far and uh hopefully uh the arrow continues to point up for this football team we got some Caleb Williams jerseys available by the way at chatsports.com calb got navies we got whites we got the oranges uh go to that link that’s in the comments into the description and check out these jerseys pick your size and uh purchase to day get yourself a jersey before week one chatsports.com calbo represent qb1 today all right uh I didn’t want to make the Hard Knock stuff the focus but I had to hit on this as well Pro Football Focus has been going through like their position group rankings uh 1 through 32 for all 32 NFL teams and uh they released their top 10 secondaries today Al and the whole list too I’ll tell you where the Bears are ranked in a little bit but bears not top which I was like hm interesting you see the top 10 on your screen here a couple really stand out to me it’s like Miami’s top five based on just name recognition like they were not a good defense last year um the Chiefs lost lerus sne I know that’s still a good group but I I don’t see how you could have them ahead of the Bears the Saints are solid but they’re getting older the Packers I know they signed Xavier McKenna but they have a better DB group than the Bears that’s not true I I I just just I to not have them in the top 10 I thought was was just not accurate quite frankly it tells me that uh people didn’t watch Tyreek Stevenson down the stretch I think PFF is looking at their own grades of the season long grades for Stevenson which weren’t that great but if you look at his last seven weeks he was tremendous and that’s a rookie balling out at the end of the year like he’s not likely to regress like first half he played like a rookie then he started to figure it out you upgrade with Kevin Bard Gordon brisker had been were nice players last year jayen Johnson was pff’s highest graded corner and you’re you’re not in the top 10 like I think this is pretty easily a top 10 secondary You could argue by the end of the last season it was top five top 10 and they upgraded and all their young guys are a year older now I just I I don’t get this at all and it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things uh but uh I did just want to mention it and say hey this why you subscribe to the channel because uh listen if things suck I’ll tell you they suck but if they’re good like the bear secondary was last year pick off balls left and right especially in the second half of the season I think that’s a pretty good group we’re giving you news rumors my analysis each and every day for 100% free hit that subscribe button turn on notifications we’ve got you covered so not only were they not top 10 they weren’t top half 19th the 19th best secondary in the NFL and then when you read this snippet from PFF you’re like this doesn’t even compute so listen here John Costco says the Bears signed quarterback jayen Johnson to a big contract extension after her career year they also added Kevin byard who’s been one of the best safeties in the NFL since entering the League quarterbacks Kyler Gordon and Tyreek Stevenson had their ups and downs in 2023 as did Jaquan brisker but this unit could be extremely good in 2024 if it plays to highend abilities which it did down the stretch last year I don’t know why it wouldn’t this year considering they’re all older like even in that like snippet that makes think okay I could see it being just outside the top 10 if you think Gordon and brisker like they got to be more consistent 19th you just said it could be one of the NFL’s best I I I just I I firmly disagree with this notion that uh the Bears secondary enters the year as a below middle of the pack group when it’s arguably the best position group on this team tell you what if the Bears have the 19th best secetary in the NFL this team’s in trouble because this is shaping out to be one of the stronger uh parts of this football team this season what do you guys think do the bearss have a top 10 secondary type one fre type Z for no I think they do and remember they were making all those interceptions down the stretch last year locking people up without a good pass rush imagine if this team had a good pass rush which that’s still a question mark like you want to say the defensive Line’s a bad unit yeah that that would be more accurate than the secondary all right that’s going to do it for today’s episode of bears now hit me up on Instagram for more content HR NFL we’ll see you over there see you next time [Music]

The New York Giants Offseason Hard Knocks episode 1 premiered on HBO last night and Chicago Bears fans should feel incredibly lucky that they have Ryan Poles as their GM instead of Joe Schoen who easily could’ve been the Bears GM. Schoen on multiple occasions talked about how he still believes in QB Daniel Jones after paying him $40 million per year. Ryan Poles pivoted off Justin Fields after 3 seasons and still not knowing if he could be the Bears franchise QB, while the Giants are trying to convince themselves Jones can be despite him being a mediocre player at best. Chat Sports host Harrison Graham reacts to the latest Bears news & rumors including Hard Knocks episode 1 reaction.

Giants’ GM Joe Schoen (Via Hard Knocks) on Daniel Jones:
“The reality is [Daniel Jones has had] 3 serious injuries in 2 years. We need to protect ourselves. He didn’t have much of a chance last year. That’s legit. Our core 4 guys [on the O-Line] played 60 snaps together. Against Miami we had 3 f****** practice squad guys playing for us. You could have Pat Mahomes and he can’t f****** win behind that. I’m not giving up on him [Jones]. He’s under contract for 3 more years. The best predictor of the future is the past.”

  1. Not gonna watch hark knocks. Ever. No interest. Seriously, less than no interest, regardless of team, regardless of year. Just zero interest. I watch games, and I’ll look at documentaries after it’s said and done…like a review of a Super Bowl winner, or a legendary player, etc. no interest in pre fight crap either…I don’t want to watch UFC or Boxing training camp either. I watch for the fight

  2. In terms of the secondary, I can see why they could be knocked down a bit, as they faced a lot of backups last year. Which probably makes PFF think their numbers were inflated. However, 19th is insulting.

  3. Poles has had some errors. But his ability/willingness to ignore meatball Bears fans and realize Fields ain't the guy was enough to show me he's the guy for the job.

  4. It’s hilarious how they paid this hack before Saquan who clearly over performed Daniel Jones lol. Based on the Giants front office logic fields should have been extended lmao.

  5. Pro Football Focus is overrated, period. It's viewed as this organization of knowledgeable gurus and insightful metrics, but a lot of the conclusions they reach are questionable. I feel like I have disagreed with so much of their stuff over the last 5 years or so.
