brain behind the PHX Sun show Eric Ruby he also co-hosted the Cardinals podcast back in the day and then he strayed from his first love and you know I don’t hold it against him but anytime he wants to come back home we w we open our arms it’s the it’s the true thing that I love and uh you know I miss it dearly but I know you boys hold down the fort and so it’s in good hands right he is an interchangeable chest piece and those are the most valuable people in this company myself is simm of this this company all right let’s chill out let’s chill out let’s chill out B I literally can’t do anything other than what we’re doing right now I literally I put my hands up here you know and they’re like hey want to talk about the Suns today and I fall over myself I can’t I can’t deal with it I couldn’t name one thing remember we tried to talk NBA draft and it was just 30 minutes on bronny James that’s that’s what you get when we try to when we strave outside of this bird we’re done to be fair that’s most national media Outlets cover the draft too so you’re pretty much spoton how they cover this Cardinals team that’s right to be honest with it we did get a nice little nugget you sent this to me this morning because ESPN has batted about oer this offseason with regard to this team I mention it anytime anybody wants to listen Mina KES came on this show and said nobody at this network watched the Cardinals last year which is well enough alone we we’ll leave that alone for a second however by hooker by crook this this outlet has started to pay attention at least to the budding young talent in the NFL never do you want to be old and bad in the NFL and for a long time the Cardinals were competitive and old but now they’re on the cusp of being I think very viable from a win La perspective bow and then having maybe one of the best young cores in the NFL according to ESPN yeah and according to the worldwide leader the uh the four-letter Network you know that has not gone without criticism as you mentioned this offseason for their takes on the Arizona Cardinals they finally I think got one right and what surprised me the most it would encourage me the most was the leap that the Arizona Cardinals make it make between 2023 and 2024 and you’ll see it but uh yeah here it is the Arizona Cardinals trending up they uh in 2023 as far as players under 25 their core of players under 25 ranked 28 out of 32 NFL teams and then going into 24 they are sixth they’ve got Trio of Blue Chip players I think you could say quartet make the case for Trey McBride Paris Johnson Jr Marvin Harrison Jr Michael Wilson will Darius Robinson join that crew as well and a notable graduate turning 25 in former first round pick zavin Collins that you know I think people uh are interested to see what zavin could do in his second season as a pass rusher yeah this is from ESPN the the Cardinals rise substantially up this list because of the 2023 draft picks had strong rookie Seasons that starts with 23-year-old uh Paris Johnson Jr who moved from right tackle left tackle this off season then they mentioned bej Jo jar at 22 with his four sacks and 40 tackles last year and then of course friend of the program Michael Wilson who is 24 he’s he’s an older player because you spent some time at Stanford um but was tied 24th in ESPN’s receiver tracking metrics in 2023 on 565 yards and 38 reception so that’s the offensive side and again like I’m with you where the hell is TR McBride like I I love Marvin I love Michael Wilson Paris shs and Junior is fantastic Trey McBride is the most I think like proven entity yeah of that group now he plays tight end maybe they’re devaluing that position which is laughable but I mean it goes back to the point we’re making every day on the show Kyler Murray is the or the the conductor of this Orchestra yeah this Orchestra is built on cheap rookie talent that is gonna Bloss him here the next two to three years by hooker by Crook and you’re in a position now to have something you have never had as an Arizona Cardinal fan a young budding offensive core in an offensive League you got multiple receivers you got a probable potential tight end you’ve got a franchise level left tackled making no money so everybody bitching complain about KY Murray making $60 million or 55 or whatever it is it’s like no no no hang on a second get through the meat of Kyler Murray’s contract without paying anybody and finally people are starting to take notice this is not Ron carthon and the fraudulent Tennessee Titans saying yeah you like our receiving court it’s got an ARP card everybody’s over 30 years old this is the Arizona Cardinals in a position now to say we’ve drafted the developmental process is here and I think the corination is right around the corner for this team I think we’re going to be in a position next time this year where they’re six this year they’re gonna be top five they’re gonna be top four next year I’m gonna take a second to say hello to the chat uh before I use a little uh some strong language right I’ll give you an opportunity if the kids in the room or if you know that’s that’s something that you’re offended by to maybe turn down your the speakers on your computer on your smartphone ru’s got his hands over his ears what’s up sha what’s Johnny C alpha male JV love the username Fishbowl flash Jack Smith AIS what’s going on Aussie how we doing Jess hope everybody’s having a great uh Wednesday but if Kyle pittz is on this [ __ ] list then Trey McBride should be on this list Kyle Pitts getting some some love for the fourth ranked Falcons in their young core Trey McBride better be part of the young core for the Arizona Cardinal Sam leaport is there for the Detroit Lions and rightfully so his rookie season out of Iowa was fantastic as a second rounder Trey McBride is 81 receptions his 800 plus yards he deserves to be on this list Aaron chatz who does good work for them who been on football Outsiders for some time like I like Aaron it has to be an oversight on Aaron’s part like Aaron must have just forgotten that Trey McBride plays for this team Trey McBride does not play for the Eagles he doesn’t play for the Green Bay pack he plays for the Arizona Cardinals Kyle pittz you take it from somebody who has doubled down on Kyle Pitts and fantasy and almost led me to a waffle death by Waffle House as a result that’s what Justin fields and Kyle Pitts gave me as a result last year I barely survived you know how I survived because I claimed a certain tight end out of the University Colorado state that he was undrafted in our league and his name is Trey McBride he’s Trey McBride saved me and I didn’t even draft our own team’s tight end I took Kyle pittz and it was a laughable joke and I I I think Kyle pittz is gonna be productive this year this isn’t slander on Kyle pittz for an hour but there is no GM in the NFL that would take Kyle Pitts over Trey McBride none . not even the GM in Atlanta who by the way took 30-year-old Michael penx to go her cousins he himself would not do that no no he would not and I was just trying to uh check out the rest of the Dalton concade makes it for the bills yeah it’s just what are we doing here just just look at you know the statistical leaders and you’re GNA see Trey McBride ahead of every major receiving category for the Arizona Cardinals and then you know you menchum him in the uh the conversation here did we did we follow up with the second part of this no go ahead yeah we’ll bring this up here to that Trio you can add the two 2022 or the two 22 year old first round rookies Harrison and defensive end Darius Robinson we also credit Arizona for a second round pick this year quarterback Max Melton and four third round picks the Cardinals also have a 24y old tight end Trey McBride who had as we mentioned the 825 receiving yards last season season and several young quarterbacks including Garrett Williams who’s 23 ke TR Clark’s 23 and Starling Thomas who’s 24 dond bride’s a blue chipper Aaron wake up Aaron yeah you you typed it out yourself 825 yards it’s uh it it overshadows whatever the hell Kyle pittz did last year and that awful Arthur Smith offense um I appreciate it’s like even when they try to do the Cardinals a favor they just stumble over themselves right even when they’re trying to like be thankful and and appreciative of the Cardinals they’re just like but you know what well actually we’re actually forgetting their maybe their best young offensive playmaker under 25 in try McBride all right so Cardinals are six we’re fired up about that let’s look at the teams ahead of them you mentioned the Falcons yeah the Chicago Bears at five Falcons at four Ravens at Three Lions at two and then of course the team that ripped our Collective hearts out each and every Sunday last year the Houston Texans are number one is there a team the Cardinals have an argument to be ahead of both yeah I think they certainly do I mean it’s it’s good company like anytime you’re within Striking Distance of what Detroit’s done over the last couple years uh it’s a good good thing Texans um you know just because you hit on the quarterback position uh and then what what they did in that draft after CJ stoud Will Anderson tank Dell um it really paid off and the Ravens consistently always in this conversation because they just drafted so well uh I think you could make the case probably the Bears because as far as their Blue Chip players they’ve got a pair of the the first rounders that they selected this year like I think let’s let’s give them some time let’s see what Caleb Williams and roma dun who I’m I’m I’m high on both of those but like let’s see if we’re already going to anoint them blue chip in the NFL then let’s calm down and in Atlanta it like they certainly have every reason to jump Atlanta when you look at their Blue Chip players somehow Michael penck apparently is not 25 yet I thought he was I thought he was actually uh filing for Social Security already but he’s on their Blue Chip player list you’ve got bejon great it’s a running back it’s not a premium position it’s great uh you got Drake London who’s fine and Kyle Pitts who I’m not convinced is Blue Chip player um Michael penck had a second round grade but because he was drafted in the top 10 he’s a blue chip player I don’t know how that makes sense like eron must just be a big fan of Michael penck because hey guess what if every player that was drafted in the top 10 by every team was a blue chip player the Cardinals would have a hundred Lombardi trophies guess what they don’t they have zero because a lot of those times like Michael penck they get a lot of Isaiah Simmons they get a lot of you know Josh Rosen EX so I’m not convinced of that I think you have an argument over the Chicago Bears the Atlanta Falcons and the Baltimore Ravens I think Detroit should be ahead of Houston as the number one team in my opinion Houston should be second because I think stad elevates everybody will Anderson Jr won Defensive Rookie of the Year and Eric Stingley Jr’s big-time quarterback like you talk about the three most important positions in the NFL like you can argue quarterback’s number one pass pass rushers number two and then at least Corners in the discussion with offensive tackle but then after that and after Detroit which is I mean they’ve drafted better than anybody I would argue the last three to five years yeah nobody is beating Paris Johnson Jr Michael Wilson Marvin Harrison Jr Trey McBride that’s that’s a Murderers Row of sorts of offensive Rich Talent you’ve got number one number two receiver check and I know a lot of people are being educated on Michael Wilson were carrying that water on this podcast and then you’ve got a blue chip tackle and you’ve got a top three to five tight end like you’re you’re outside a quarterback you’re checking every box now what are we missing we’re missing a pass rusher and we’re missing a quarterback that could come a year from now with Max Melton that could come a year from now old jari could have 10 sacks and be inserted into this equation the Cardinals are only going to rise in this group because why hello seven picks in the top 90 this year first time since the early 90s with the Dallas Cowboys 12 picks in total from this draft class if they’re labeling last year’s draft class as the fuel for the fire can only imagine the Cardinals are going to be in a better position next year I just it’s the Cardinals are due for a list like this and they’re only going to stay here there’s they just have too many pieces right now one year of mon ort and this is where they are one full calendar year it makes me emotional thinking about it it’s it’s it’s really impressive impressive a testament to mon ort I mean there was only one direction to go there really was I mean you you could have been average at best and and still been an upgrade especially in the draft and the you know putting together what this list is which is I’ll give you the criteria again it’s a core of your players under 25 years old so we’re not saying like Arizona Cardinals have a better like overall young core than the Bears because you know they’ve got some good impressive players like they added montz wet who’s yet to really hit his prime just yet and you know DJ Moore and some young budding stars in this league as far as you’re under 25 guys as Johnny outlin like the first two years mon OS for at the end of last season he had 13 first year players on the roster plus you’ve got 12 draft picks and then three undrafted rookie free agents so 15 you’ve got 28 players that you’ve added to this roster in you know a year and a half and you’re gonna with the potential to rise from six it’s just fantastic f for the direction of this football club I think especially looking at them like if they had jumped 10 spots or 15 spots you know you’re like oh that’s I mean what an incredible jump but to go all the way to six and have an argument like you guys have mentioned to maybe even be higher like give it a couple more years and even when they are successful the Monte Train’s GNA keep on rolling even with those non High first round picks the Rams we have to shout out were 32nd last year they are eighth because of wow a draft class led by puka nkua Steve ailia and Byron young so again you know the the McVey voodoo magic continues Seattle drops year after year they they had they were the bell of the ball two years ago last year they were seventh this year they’re 10th so again still viable but they’re led by Gino Smith the the rot in this list that I can smell from a mile away and I love it by the way you smell that rot in this list San Francisco 49ers for the second consecutive year are in the 20s they’re 23rd overall their Blue Chip players Brock pie which by this list that’s fine throw him in there no other Blue Chip players yunga has graduated from the under 25 list everybody else is in their prime or slowly or quickly if you’re Trent Williams approaching out of their Prime sound the alarms in San Francisco you better start winning some Super Bowls because again year after year the deterioration of the 49ers is coming if you if you’re watching this podcast and you don’t believe it open your eyes because they’re gonna have to pay Brock py they’re gonna have to figure out what to do with Brandon IU Debo Samuel is hurt George KD was disappeared in the Super Bowl he’s over 30 years old Christian mcaffrey peren penally a hurt player outside of last year the San Francisco 49 roster deterioration is coming and I will have a front row seat with a scar in my mouth as the Arizona Cardinals approach top five in Youngtown in the NFL well and I’ll give them credit you know heavy sometimes is the conference Championship Crown not the Super Bowl Crown in their case because they haven’t been able to get it done you look at Kyle Shanahan’s inability to really shut the door and finish the deal it hasn’t been there loser to too bad but like when you have what’s considered year in and year out you know one of the most stacked and deep rosters in a cap League uh and also when your team is top the standing in the regular season you’re drafting lower and lower each and every year and you lose your ability to cash in on like the the True Blue Chip more can’t miss talent that the NFL draft provides but like you could you can hold your head above water you can continue to find serviceable players and fill out rosters no doubt about it we’re not saying that but you’re seeing the drop off like the guys that they were able to get and build their core around like Nick Bosa was the second overall pick in this draft and and Kyler Murray’s draft like he’s a big reason for their success and like and obviously coaching but also the success that they were able to have in days two and three in the draft which is is fine but you know it is nice and and it is like it is should be sobering to see that that window is is closing by the day they haven’t been able to develop offensive lineman they were able to steal Trent Williams because he forced his way out of Washington they’ve had a lot of favors done to them Carolina gifted than mcaffrey right Debo Samuel was a a revelation as a second round pick give them credit Brandon I you every day is going on social media trying to force his way out of San Francisco out of Santa Clara I I just again when you’re paying Brock pie north of $50 million and the rest some of your parts are average maybe above maybe below I mean you become an average team as a result and so I think that we’re at a point now with San Francisco where this is it for them and if it there there are about two injuries on that roster away from it’s over your your door is closed you’re not going to be a terrible team but your your time is hey we’re going to stack up wins in the regular season we’re gonna host the PO postseason we’re gonna have the number one seed I mean like I I think it’s over for for them after this year I really do you know my my thoughts on Ricky piol like I like Ricky piol I think he’s he’s gonna be a fine player he’s gonna be a good NFL player he’s gonna be a good NFL wide receiver he’s not going to match Brandon iuk does he not going to match with Deo samulet so like their their their I guess contingency plan or their future plan at the wide receiver position is a downgrade ultimate and like they reach for him like you can you can like Ricky peol a valley product all you want you know he went from ASU to Florida and and was a senior bull darling and I I love talking to him catching up with him in Mobile but like even I’ll agree with you like first round is is a major reach for Ricky Piera it’s a line of scrimmage League you’re going to lose Trent Williams you lost to Forest Buckner Armstead a defensive tackle I mean we saw the Cardinals go for 200 on the ground against San Francisco last year it wasn’t by accident Fred Warner is a year older they lost their other linebacker in the Super Bowl he’s not playing this year I mean it’s just their defense is very susceptible this year to be in aage and then again you you put a little heat on Brock py Cardinals need to make up for that and we’re going to talk about that later this week as it relates to the pass rush we’re going to talk about QBs backup QBs here in the S here in a second and who Bo and I are going to gamble on as it relates to suiting up behind KY the uh Lucas Oil and Company we were able to connect with um some people close to the scene Cardinal coaches alike one of the biggest takeaways we got how much this team likes Clayton tune how much they feel like Clayton ton has a bright future bow with this team despite kind of being sacrificed to the Cleveland Browns took one for the team but again like in the Battle of Clayton ton versus Co McCoy like Clayton ton stuck on the rock stuck on the roster col McCoy hasn’t played an NFL game since so now we look at this off season however and the Cardinals they did bring in some competition they traded away Rond Del Moore straight up the rare tra player for player trade for Desmond Ritter the former starter in Atlanta and I I will be the first to admit based on the comments that I heard I thought Clayton TB was gonna be the guy for qb2 now we look at Ritter coming with his pedigree of at least starts in the NFL he may not have the arm strength of Clayton tune but now you look at that quarterback room as a whole how do you see this transpiring over the preseason yeah I mean I’ll start by saying uh and echoing what you said and what we’ve heard from this organization as far as Intel goes that they’re and it has it hasn’t wavered there’s been belief in Clayton tun since they select him in the fifth round at Houston and it hasn’t it hasn’t wavered since like they like his makeup that’s what we’ve continually heard they love his makeup they think that he’s a guy that can be a backup in this league for 10 Seasons or more and you know you certainly didn’t see that on full display and an historically bad performance and his lone opportunity in the 2023 season against the Cleveland Browns as he said he was a bit of a sacrificial lamb in that game and a tip of the cap for Clayton tunin playing that role as like the final you know gasp to get to Kyler Murray after they traded away Joshua dobs but you know they maintained their belief in Clayton tune he held the backup quarterback position once Kyler Murray came back they didn’t just say hey we got to figure this out now that Kyler’s back and we saw what ton looks like you know on the field that was he was getting beat up and throwing two picks against the Browns defense they went in the off season and and they like Clayton tune and and felt like he can make a jump from year one to year two but with Monty Austin for who’s in a different position and he’s always looking to improve this roster the opportunity presented itself where Atlanta goes out and they throw the bag at kurk cousins and then you know we didn’t know they were going to trade for for or select Michael pennick in the top 10 but Desmond Ritter becomes available and it’s only going to cost him somebody who wasn’t going to be really a part of this team going forward and Rond Del Moore so now you got competition in that room and I think like the people that believed in Clayton tune it’s gon to come down to okay what you think is possible when he projects to be to somebody who I think might already be there as a serviceable backup in Desmond Ritter yeah I agree like I I feel like Desmond Ritter to me if you had to start one game you’re gonna play the guy with the experience you’re gonna play the guy that has seen it all done it all at least in a short period of time as a presumed starter for the Atlanta Falcons going into last year like he did get replaced Taylor hinei I mean Desir just not a good player last year well he’s your guy to go and keep the Train on the tracks against the San Francisco against a Chicago or a Green Bay in a one-off game if Kyler Murray needs a week that’s who you’re going to go with as a developmental guy as somebody that you’ve drafted that you put time in that has upside that can be the future back up indefinitely because I know Desmond Ritter I think he’s still on his rookie contract he’s probably gonna be a free agent after this year I’d have to double check like Clayton tune they want Clayton ton a part of this regime as long as they can keep him assuming he continues to ascend and get better whereas I I feel like Desmond Ritter is kind of the perfect gaps Band-Aid where you can say we like Clayton tune but in the same realm we’re trying to be a postseason team and as much as I like Clayton tun nobody can say yeah he can he can take care of it behind Kyler Murray we can give him an opportunity to go out and try to win a game with his arm with his legs Colt McCoy s like he did for Cliff Kingsbury a couple years ago it’s just that’s not winning football yet we need to be able to see Clayton t a little bit more because I’ll tell you right now if Clayton t goes out there and lights it up in the preseason Desmond Ritter’s just okay like then it’s an easy decision hell they may even opt to release Desmond Ritter but I think Desmond Ritter is efficient enough in the intermediate passing game doesn’t have a great arm but somebody that has Mobility like say what you want about Desmond Ritter his game Compares more to what Kyler Murray does I know it’s a greater reach than than some but Clayton tune is not that caliber of athlete like Desmond Ritter high-end athlete at the Collegiate level was part of that undefeated Cincinnati team has played in a bunch of big games like on paper you can definitely see what they were going for when they shipped Rond Del Moore out it’s like oh we get a guy who’s great in the locker room winning pedigree arms okay not great but certainly can make intermediate throws and has Mobility it’s the perfect compliment to Clayton T who does everything else well who has the big arm Talent who hasn’t played a bunch of Big Time football so I like the Dynamics of this room this room to me is much more appealing to whatever the hell we were force-fed last year and the year before with the Jeff Driscoll and the Colt McCoy and the Joshua dobs this this group to me there’s tremendous amount of upside past Kyler Marie which is we haven’t been able to say that it’s gonna be key for Clayton tun to show that he has uh narrowed that gap between being a fifth round rookie in 2023 and and that he can be a viable backup like statistics say that Desmond Ritter could be a viable backup like if you think I mean Drew ping looked like a miracle worker with Joshua dobs who was basically out of this league and was able to put him in a position to to win football games he didn’t win a lot he won one but he put that the offense in in in spots at times to to win games uh but Desman Ritter is eight n as a starter in this league yeah Desmond Ritter has uh as far as his TD the int ratio it’s 14 to 12 right now so like he he’s proven at least at the NFL level that he can be Sur able in that spot Clayton ton like that the same can’t be said so like if if you’re looking and you’re looking for a fallback plan for Kyler Murray in 2024 like as it stands right now the edge belongs to Ritter but with the opportunity and the belief and it’s in the facility in Tampe and Clayton tune he’s got to prove it and uh it’s exciting I think that this is Johnny gonna be one of the better position battles in training camp here for the Cardinals yeah we also have to be fair like Desmond rder played in collectively what is the worst division in the NFL and yes he had a bad head co bad head coach in Atlanta Arthur Smith who was a big time buffoon but he was playing against the Carolinas he was playing against you know this the Saints and you know I like Tampa well enough but like you got six games against a bunch of cupcakes historically and so like this different different aspect playing NFC West football is Big Boy football in this division so I know we know based on what they’ve told us people around the team Clayton tune if he doesn’t fall on his face he’s super high level High character guy they want him around the team and listen like say what you want go back and watch the tape from last year on this show he looked infinitely better than Co McCoy and I’m hoping that he has had an opportunity over the last calendar year to build off of that because he got a lot of reps he was running with the ones half the time during the preseason had no business doing that based on the you know the expectation of a quarterback that’s why they traded for Joshua dobs but that’s that experience I hope he has an opportunity to build off of because that that doesn’t happen to most fifth rounders straight out of college out of Houston of all plac yeah uh man what a difference year makes you had Kyler Murray on the Shelf rehabbing his knee your quarterback room was was uh Colt McCoy who we have heard from recently and Donnie drwan uh packaged it very well and where he had a conversation McCoy did basically saying that his arm never responded from a procedure he had couldn’t throw the football and you know that that was your qb1 for the bulk of training camp in preseason for his outright release and uh and then Clayton tune just by being available and since they drafted him and and doing everything that was asked of him since you know rookie mini camp on uh was like kind of your default guy they wanted him though to take grasp of of the the quarterback two roll he did that admirably throughout last season now now it’s time for him to prove himself at this level uh and the competition is there do we want to get as we’re doing a quarterback room preview uh you know and and we could be talking to some people just checking in on that quarterback battle or just taking a glimpse at the Cal quarterback room qb1 like and what our expectations are for Kyler Murray in 2024 I mean we talk about it seemly every show but repeating Kyle Murray plays a full season Kye Murray’s a postseason quarterback more often than not he’s making a pro bowl he’s giving up bloated Big Time statistics for this franchise like I don’t have to make a case for that I’ve seen it I’ve seen it with my own eyes every year he’s been healthy when he’s not healthy and he misses time this team loses games and they’re not productive offensively he came back last year and they were almost a 500 team with one of the worst rosters in the NFL collectively and so now it’s like give them all off season with Drew pssing no limitations off that ACL the perfect amount of time to dip his toe in at the end of 2023 I mean like I think Kyer Murray and I can’t predict if somebody’s going to stay healthy all I know is if he’s on the field this year he is putting up historic numbers for the Arizona Cardinal football franchise the the Cardinal football franchise really dating back to their time in St Louis he is efficient I think he’s gonna have somewhere in the vicinity of like 68% completion I think he’s going to reach 30 passing touchdowns adding a couple on the ground and the Cardinals are going to be a viable team through December and January what whatever that looks like I think Kyler Murray has a career year for this team seeing some great uh Next Level you know statistics analytics we harped on the guy and waren sharp last year because for his atrocious offensive line rankings but came out with a percentage of third down incompletions which were due to receiver error last year and first in that group was Joe burrow 28% of incompletions on third down were due to a wide receiver issue air wrong route run whatever it may be but it wasn’t really on the fault of the quarterback Kyler Murray was next in line there at 27% 27% of his incompletions on third down where they couldn’t move the change was due to wide receiver err you also couple in where 28% of Kyler Murray’s incompletions from his time last year uh only 28% of them were due to his own inaccuracies yeah so you’re looking at a a a revamped playmaking group where you know know the huge addition of Marvin Harrison Jr the developed rapport with Michael Wilson who now most Publications are playing catch up on and realizing he’s gonna be a breakout candidate Greg dorch who was probably the only reliable guy during all those you know where we saw those poor statistics you know on any down and and you know where the wide receiver fell group fell short last year and then Trey McBride like and then Kyler Murray just having a a better rapport with everybody and more I guess comfort in this system I think that you’re just going to see those numbers decrease and and see a more accurate in Rhythm passer in Kyler Murray in 2024 hit those overs with our friends at bet 365 as it relates to Kyler Murray everybody agreeing in under 25 lists this year yeah top 25 under 25 third string quarterbacks who may also return KCK oh sorry he just hit 25 he’s he’s he doesn’t qualify that’s a it’s a blue chipper for uh the Pittsburgh Steelers although he’s not a starter Plex is back 199 Simmons is nickel on the Giants this year laughing my ass off you know yeah gotta be a big nickel right he can’t be the no I’m serious and that’s a you know a trendy position where they like to you know put like a third safety out on the field but have you has anybody seen Isaiah Simmons in coverage I would venture to say his game against the Kansas City Chiefs to open up the 2022 regular season was maybe the worst game of any Cardinal defensive back in the last 10 years go watch it your eyes are G to start bleeding it’s a collective bludgeoning by Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce and the most buffoonery you’ve ever seen from Vance Joseph and Isaiah Simmons it looked like the Cardinals had not practiced the entire off season and Studio K to Studio Studio A having a great little offseason here Craig your latest article Cardinals tight end TR McBride chasing Jackie Smith’s Legend can you inform our audience we got a little bit of a younger crowd who Jackie Smith is where he stands in Cardinal history I need to find out from Johnny too your dad has a connection to Jackie Smith we’ll get to that in a minute but yeah Jackie Smith is a Hall of Fame tight end that’s who he is did his work with the St Louis Cardinals and man did he do some work in an era where tight end’s NE weren’t necessarily the first option or the second option in the passing game he still holds the record for receiving yards by a tight end in cardal franchise history and he did it on only 56 catches which just blows me away when I look at those numbers uh yeah 1,200 yards that year I think it was in 1967 with maybe was it I don’t know if Jim Hart was his quarterback back then I can’t remember who was throwing him the football but here’s here’s what you need to know if you’re an Arizona Cardinal fan Jackie Smith it’s in the Pro Football Hall of Fame it’s not in the Ring of Honor for the Arizona Cardinals do you want to take a guess as to why that is because he went to the Dallas Cowboys and Bill Bidwell holds a grudge and Michael Bidwell unfortunately has to carry that for his dad so I love pieces like this Craig because it shows hopefully Michael Bidwell who will come across this article Jackie Smith is rooting for the Cardinals he’s rooting for Trey McBride and that’s a good look at it’s a goodlook win and Otis Anderson could reach out to an pre-existing running back for the team a Fitzgerald can talk about Marvin Jackie Smith is really it before Trey McBride like with all due respect to the other tight ends that have come and gone like this is the passing of the Baton yet Craig it’s only taken I don’t know 40 plus years for the Cardinals to get viable at tight end again so we have been overdoing Arizona that’s a subject for another story uh one that’s been written a few times since there’s been a a lot of occasion to actually write that story the history of this franch franchise’s tight end position is just God awful it’s unbelievable we Bo and I were talking about some of the names that have come through here I don’t want to I don’t want to throw shade at any of these guys but I mean like 400 yards was was a big season for a cardinal tight end it’s just crazy to think about what has come here in the past and it’s nice to see it finally shifting into the modern era it really is I mean Trey McBride the one thing he does have franchise wise as far as the record goes single season catches because as you mentioned with with Jackie Smith it didn’t take very many Trey McBride’s 81 catches last season is a franchise a single season franchise record for the Arizona card and and Beyond I mean it’s pretty impressive but then he’s got when you look at the yardage marks of the top seven Jackie Smith has six of them now yeah six of them I mean what uh as far as where Jackie Smith is now you said that he was gonna be you know on the Forefront of those cheering on Trey McBride what else did you learn from yeah it’s first off when I reached out to try and get in touch with Jackie Smith everybody associated with him said this guy is just salt of the earth he’s one of the best human beings you’ll ever talk to which is another reason he should be in the Ring of Honor because he’s a good human being aside from what he accomplished in a cardinal Jersey but he’s man what a story this is he’s working he’s been working for the past five years on getting this replica of the Vietnam War Memorial built in Perryville Missouri as he says it I could listen to him say it a million times this this is what’s been just eating up his time the man is 84 years old but he’s doing all he can to help this get going all the uh Associated exhibits this is very meaningful to him um but he’s still he’s still incredibly Lucid he’s funny he was a spectacular interview honestly guys I think we should have him on the show at some point especially if Trey gets close to the record it’d be unbelievable to have him in house m-hm did he start paying attention to what Trey was doing last year did people around him like say hey hey Dad hey Grandpa turn this on because this is the first time that people have Associated greatness with a tight end since the late 70s with the Arizona Cardinals then the St Louis Cardinals yeah yeah he get he said he gets emails he he he reads some stories but he hasn’t been keeping close TS but he promised after this that he’s going to be following he’s going to be his biggest router he wants to see him break the record which is incredible in and of itself right if I set a record I’m I’m not sure I want anyone to come along even centuries later when I’m dead and break my record this guy’s like rooting for a guy to break his records he said that’s what they’re there for it’s it’s something to shoot for and he’s going to be following his career much more closely now he even said I’d love to get him on the phone or I’d love to talk to him in person hopefully somebody in the Cardinals organization can make that happen I have an idea who and Trey McBride I think would certainly oblige I he seems like it right you were there a couple weeks ago when Trey McBride kind of took the podium and answered some questions kind of leading up to you know or the continued I guess coverage throughout the offseason that the Cardinals have provided us with Trey McBride seems like he would be somebody open to that and that’s that’s encouraging to see it’s it’s crazy to think that Jackie Smith his phone has been just dormant for 40 plus years nearly 50 years because there hasn’t even been anybody to have a conversation like this about like all you said all due respect I’ll be a little bit uh more blunt like Rob howler we weren’t saying hey what do we think Rob Hower gonna approach 1,200 yards in a season I mean he got to like 400 Leonard Pope uh who was the kid out of Notre Dame that they took Nicholas Troy Nicholas it just supposed to be his dud was supposed Troy Nicholas was supposed to be the next coming right I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the footage Bo and I were in studio with Frank Sanders on day two of the draft we were in our old Studio it was about a th degrees and they hadn’t made a pick yet in that draft they had traded a first round pick for Hollywood Brown so we it gotten it leak that it was gonna be Trey McBride and we all just kind of look collectively outside of Frank and we’re like I don’t know about this not because we didn’t think highly of Trey McBride but because to Bose’s point that position has been so snake bitten for this franchise like other franchises trotting out the likes of like Travis Kelsey and Company like we didn’t even fathom what that could look like so then you fast forward to last year and we’re sitting around it’s like late November early December it’s like well this is what it feels like to be viable at this position in the year our football Lord 2023 it’s just we’re we’re immune to that we haven’t had that benefit before I wanted to ask you guys about last season too because this this was sort of a Changing of the Guard Zack Herz was here but when I were talking a little about this but he he didn’t get the benefit of a full season he had to sort of you know take advantage of uh an injury situ and then prove so it wasn’t even like that franch record was set by playing a full season so it’s not unreasonable to think he could do more this season but I’m curious how that all went down in your eyes I I thought I really think that a guy like Zack Herz and I trying to be respectful because he’s had a you know Pro Football Hall of Fame caliber career um I think that they were kind of giving him the respect and kind of gave him a hall pass to kind of operate on his own schedule unlike the rest of the the organization like you had guys coming off significant knee injuries that they that they made sure were on the right program where Zack erer was just like oh you want to come back you you have a you know comeback date of the season opener sure do it yeah you got a spot we’ll give you the PT and um you know until they realize and I think it started week one like oh we might have made a mistake here and delaying the development the maturation of our our young second your tight end and and Trey McBride and in giving these snaps to Zack Herz the pass from Joshua dos in the first game of the season Johnny that would have been a touchdown and probably would have been the winning score for the Cardinals I mean that just started you know I think an early exit for Zack Herz uh and what should have been kind of a more of a swans song for him than it was yeah and I don’t want to put words in jg’s mouth but you got to imagine like him coming to this team fored a lot of the Cardinal players and then there’s a familiar face from Philadelphia that has helped them win a Super Bowl and has been a Conant Pro in their locker room so we get it and we understood it at the time and you know to ‘s defense like he was healthy at times during the preseason try brde had what was a soft tissue injury he was working his way back from but the handing of the Baton took way too long they they missed out in some opportunities but man you mentioned it like when he took over it just looked I think dropped the Baton I think he dropped it on it they buried it then we had to start over and we’re back from the dead now at the tight end position with Trey McBride but again like like we we rip on Dallas’s tight end a lot Craig on this show his last name’s Ferguson we call him Turd Ferguson a lot because he made the Pro Bowl last year over Trey McBride which was an egregious error but Dallas their fan base pubbing him up but then you watch the two the difference between the two players and you look beyond the box score turd Ferguson’s got the benefit of see lamb Dak Prescott’s a career year they’ve got Brandon Cooks they’ve got they’ve got a ton of weapons there to kind of scheme him open and it felt like most of his yards and his yak and his his touchdowns were manufactured by a good offense Trey McBride was the Cardinal offense for large stretches last year there’s a great photo in Craig’s article I’d encourage everybody to go check it out it’s the touchdown that Trey McBride had to score effectively twice in consecutive plays in Pittsburgh where he caught a touchdown they waved off he caught it again on the one yard line and barreled his way in like his ability to get yards after catch his physicality the game-winning catch to set up the field goal against Atlanta a comebacker to save Kyler Murray On The Run just like that is how you ingratiate yourself with a fan base like anybody can put up Hollow numbers but how INF factual and important Trey McBride statistics were on a team that was desperately just trying to be viable on Sunday I think that speaks to the kind of player he is and that that sort of old school mentality of yards after the catch is something that that resonates with Jackie we talked about that a little bit and he’s in an era when when a guy like Mike did is also playing where you’ve seen all the highlights where he catches the ball you know three yards off the line and then just runs over five guys to get the yards that that definitely resonates with Jackie Smith because that’s the kind of ball that he liked to play yeah and Jackie talked in your article during your time you guys spoke about just the evolution of the position where you’re sitting right there next to tackle and trying to block an edge Rush basically what you’re doing you’re a blocker you’re a blocker and then if you if if maybe a play breaks down you leak out you get a catch but now I mean did you get to ask him about where the position is now and like tight end University is a thing and yeah like I mean he his the old school tight end University going way back it would have been just him and Dick and that’s it yeah and I loved what he said about that too about you know lining up wide he said I would have given up my my position on the front line in hell to to be able to line up six yards away with nobody contesting me getting downfield yeah he would have loved that but he I he wasn’t trying to throw shade on any of the tight ends now it’s just he loves the evolution of the game and he would have loved to have the chance to play in that I wonder what he would have had like yards per catch if if that had been the case because his stats are ridiculous so it is it funny Craig you’re joining us and I’m so fired up you’re joining us for a multitude of reasons but partially because Trey McBride and we’re talking about him as a newbie he is the most tenured pass catcher for the Arizona Cardinals he’s about to enter his third year he’s he’s being paid no money in relation to guys like Travis Kelce and Mark Andrews and then you’ve got right behind him as a seconde player Michael Wilson and then oh by the way right behind him Marvin Harrison Jr as a rookie I mean can you sense the time you spent now in the locker room for a little bit the press conferences how green these players are and the fact that they could be on the cusp of really putting together the first youthful complete receiver core this team has had in probably like 20 years since Fitzgerald and Anquan balore here yeah there’s there’s so much Buzz about it too Johnny this is as excited as I’ve seen people listen I’ve followed this franchise even though I haven’t covered the last few years I’ve been keeping tabs on once you cover a team you keep tabs on them and there does feel like there’s that sort of excitement we’ve talked about this so many times and Drew petzing even talked about it when he spoke the other day about how you’re going to distribute the ball he even said we’re going to petion he joked we’re going to ition the NFL for two footballs you’ve heard that joke before but there are a lot of weapons here and it is a legitimate concern not not a concern but you really have to game plan and figure out how you’re going to work all these weapons he talked about you remember what he said some of it’s conting on who you’re playing who’s hot there are a variety of factors that come into this but you got a lot of guys who want their touches right and they deserve their touches and it’s gonna it’s a it’s a game of matchups right trying to find mismatches out there and what we saw on a consistent basis with Trey McBride is he with with his his athleticism at the tight end position is the ability to just take advantage of a lot of NFL safeties even guys that are held within high regard um and and Kyler Murray’s I I would bet it’s going to continue to expose that even with having an embarrassment of riches on the outside with Marvin Harrison Jr and Michael Wilson it’s it’s a good position to be in and like you talk about the youth movement Johnny I mean Trey McBride the Elder Statesman in that tight end room by a lot now I mean you brought in your guy tip Ryman who’s gonna be a rookie and then you’ve got Elijah Higgins who’s entering his second season as a pro but he hasn’t been playing the tight end he’s only been playing the tight end position his first professional season so Craig I’m gonna put you on the spot here so you will undoubtedly be involved in our fantasy football league here p and exp Sports oh no in 20124 he has to you can’t be on this beat not participate and I’m going to tell you right now give me your list I’m gonna ask you of tight ends that you feel like could go above Trey McBride like in put you on the spot because I have an idea of where he should go where he should be as a tight end hierarchy in the NFL are there are there any tight ends that come in mind for you that above Trey there there are not many I will say this and I I what I will say is I’m really anxious to see what he can do as the guy yeah for an entire season and when I look at that Mark the 12200 yard mark I’m pretty sure he’s going to get there at this season that that’s what I would say I I think he’s got a really good chance to break Jackie’s record which would be an unbelievable story we don’t we you just don’t see this happen very often right in the game where you’re you’re covering a guy having a record setting season it’s a really cool story it’s a great Evolution as we’ve talked about for the Cardinal tight end position one that is long overdue I’m I’m not going to answer your question I’m dodging your question I think it’s pretty obvious at this point which yards he would be tight end one so you are correct he is tight end one in the NFL he could be boyfriend’s pretty good Taylor Swift’s boyfriend yeah it’s they definitely fit in one hand I would say that if you’re even considering other guys I am out on the old guys as Bon know like George KD I’m out on him I’m out on Travis Kelce there like you can see I there is a path for try McBride to get to 12200 yards this year yeah again started 12 games last year I mean it’s Unthinkable to think about the best year Cardinal tight end has had since the early 70s and he only started 12 games yeah your disrespect for the older people on this program has me concerned for your parents well-being like you’re you’re probably going to be a little has me personally concerned too quick trigger to put them in a home or something like that you’re like oh are are you losing a little bit let’s just get you right now into a home I have no issue with that and I’m not going to push back at all listen I there’s agism that’s involved absolutely specifically for my players that I’m trying to win games games with it’s a young man’s league and uh yeah we talked about that earlier in the show just the fact that Cardinals have a youth movement right now and so many times Craig I’ve watched this team sign over the hill players you saw it again when you were covering the team in the early to mid 2000s it’s like who can we give $30 million guaranteed that had success elsewhere that can help sell tickets hello edrian James right hello Chris Johnson
