let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase terms apply so I’ll start with Ryan wowski uh of course fan favorite for for the San Jose Sharks uh played for the sharks from you know 20 2005 through 2013 um beloved shark known for his toughness and his kind of ability to you know find the back of the net um just beloved shark and um he was officially hired today as the assistant or it was announced that he was hired as the assistant general manager this was seen after after he was spotted um at the development Camp um this on Tuesday what day is yeah on Tuesday and I think this is a really this isn’t just a like bring your friends home and you know come hang out type of move for the sharks like Ryan CL is a well-respected front office person who’s kind of starting to see his his Star Rise so um you know he played hockey basically until 2008 or he his last season was 2014 2015 uh where he played 13 games of course we know conc kind of forced him to retire um in the 201617 year he joined the New Jersey Devils as an assistant coach um so he was behind the bench for two seasons for them um then he went to the ECHL to become a head coach of the New Finland Growlers uh unfortunately because of his concussions he did have to step down from that since then he’s worked the past three seasons with the New York Rangers he was a team consultant for the last two years than a senior advisor um for the Rangers in 2324 U before getting the assistant general manager job for these sharks so this isn’t just like you know like Ryan K’s been going through the kind of the motions and the steps to work um you know in the front office here as being an assistant coach being a head coach you know kind of being an advisor and working his way up so as we’ve seen with the sharks and just this kind of good vibe sharks that we’re we’re having where yes the very talented CH like the children are very talented right in m sabrini and Will Smith and Casper hon and Quinton musty and Canon and you know Sam Dickenson like the the talent that is starting to pour through San Jose um is one of the best groups in the league but what Mike Greer is doing to try to kind of put these kids in the best position to succeed by having um talented former talented players but guys who kind of come from some different backgrounds as well and I think you know you of course you have your Patrick maros and your Joe thoron who are uh well regarded you know high-end picks and they’re going to be um you know Joe Thorton’s a Hall of Fame lock and I think uh Patrick Marlo Gets In the Hall of Fame at some point you know both those guys are by the end of November gonna have their numbers retired in San Jose but getting a guy like Ryan CL who you know kind of grinder right um you know he was a six round pick had to kind of work for everything you know coming out of the Q playing a couple seasons in the a like you know like he’s he’s a guy who’s battled and kind of been through a lot and even dealing with with the injury stuff right of of dealing with the concussions like this a guy who’s his career he’s had to earn every little bit and I kind of like having some of those grinder guys around because of everybody’s path isn’t isn’t the same and I think having a guy like K who can be there for the young kids and kind of help uh Mike Greer in his you know what he sees with when it comes to you know assessing Talent having a guy like that isn’t a you know is I think is a positive thing just because it brings a different perspective and maybe there is that Unearthed six round pick that the sharks make you know find that ends up being something special um sharks have done it several times before and maybe just having a guy like CL around who can kind of help find that um so I I’m really excited to see K back good for him to get that he’s kind of you know kind of put those it seems like he’s put those health issues in the rearview mirror has be able to start to kind of build him a very successful uh front office career and again like just right now The Vibes for the sharks are just just absolutely Immaculate like it it feels like they’re they’re doing a lot of stuff right and we’ll see how this continues to go but I think having Ryan CL in the building um is going to be a a big part of what’s going forward with the sharks and you know I know there’s a lot of questions about Mike Greer when he got hired as a general manager because of his lack of experience mik has a plan and he’s seeing that plan through right now and I think now we’re getting to that you know it’s easy to tear things down phase but now we’re starting to kind of see how the plan is coming to together to kind of build things up and I think having smart people who know the game well and Ryan K is a smart person who knows the game well um knows also how to kind of finagle the rules when sitting on the bench um but having a guy like that in the building I think is going to do it’s going to just be another service to to San Jose and to the Sharks and what this organizations building right you know and and I know Klo and uh Greer played together it was a great photo of of them hugging uh like someone found a photo of them hugging on the ice from several several years ago but yeah like having those guys right so if you are a Luca Canon or Eric pamp or somebody like that who you know like how do you how do you keep fight like you can go to k and be like how do you keep fighting how do you kind of keep working through this stuff and like how do you as a mid to late round pick like K’s been there and done it right he’s been through the battles and he’s kind of been through it he’s dealt with injuries he’s he’s kind of done everything I think that’s just going to be another important thing to to have for for these young guys but you know then you also like I said you have Joe Thorton who’s you know had the weight of the world of expectations on him being a number one pick right and you saw he got traded as a number one pick not that we were hoping we never have that issue with Mel lebrini but you know a guy like thoron who has had the weight of the world on him and like how do you play through that and how do you deal with that and you know Patrick Marlo who you know fairly or unfairly has had a lot of playoff failures laid At His Feet um for the Sharks never kind of like just having these guys who who’ve been through it as you’re building this new culture and letting these uh young kids kind of marinate and dealing with the pressures that they have to deal with right I mean back on celebrini and Will Smith right the the entire weight of franchises on you know an 18 and 19 year old kid’s shoulders here and how did these two grow together and hopefully become the next version of Joe thoron and Patrick Marlo except for maybe with a a Stanley Cup attached to it like that’s that’s what Miker is trying to build right now and I I think just diversifying and trying to get as many smart people in the building to help help is the best thing you can possibly do right now so I’m interested to see kind of where close focus is if it’s going to be kind of development right he especially as a guy who was a former assistant coach and former coach is it going to be kind of more than that is it going to be more Pride as a guy who’s also worked with the Rangers the past couple Seasons kind of where his specialty is with the sharks um it’s going to be interesting but right again right now the whole the whole everything right now is is the children and getting the kids ready to go and getting these these guys making their transition as easy as possible as they go from playing college to Pro you know in Will Smith and mlin cini’s case and you know guys like eckan like okay how do you you know great first season how do we kind of take that next step you know for the defenseman okay like you guys got your you guys got your Tails kicked the last the last season like how do we turn this around how do we kind of shed those negative that negative energy and and start to build something positive here so um really excited for Klo and again I I I think Miker has had himself a heck of an off season uh so far so we’ll look at the as next we’ll look at the Sharks uh coaching staff gets to know some of the new guys and then we’ll talk about some kind of news and notes things at at the end of the episode including uh potential uh shishov playing in the ol next year so we’ll get to that here in just one minute it’s summertime which of course means going to catch a baseball game maybe you want to go catch a concert price guaranteed all right so the Sharks officially officially officially announced their Brian War’s coaching staff uh the picture of warski they tweeted out looks he looks very uh demanding and Dapper there but a lot of uh a lot of familiar faces we’ll go through the familiar faces first so returning Brian wisman uh was assistant coach helped out with the sharks power play last year which um if you know like the power play was sneaky good especially when you look at the pieces that were right it was basically the Lun line um bordalo and kayin Addison for the majority of the Season or you know um declair on there as well instead of bord like it was it was very much a hodge podge piece or the running five forwards at time like at times because they just didn’t trust the defenseman but anyway um wisman is going to return also goalie coach Thomas spear which of course like you talked to any of the goalies you talked to coie you talked to uh Kapp you talked to McKenzie Blackwood they all raved about the work Thomas spear has done with them so I like I’m glad that he’s back that they’re I the hope is he like never leaves because he’s just that good and you can kind of uh just lock him in and hopefully we can see some continue to see growth in the gold tending department so Thomas Pier I think great great to have him back and I look forward to see Blackwood in year two if he can continue to stay healthy uh maybe V Vanek we can kind of get some more of that magic uh rubbed on him and see another Devil’s goalie bounce back which would be amazing um for me personally anyway and then they did bring back uh Nick jodani and then Cody Ward the video coaches both this guy’s excellent how many times did uh Quinn last season Challenge and and was successful in his challenges he was very very good at challenges and usually comes to the video those video coaches knowing like hey they got that wrong being able to kind of go through it quickly and espe on the fly in the game uh and look at a play and go nope that’s that’s wrong let’s let’s let’s uh challenge that um so really really feel positive about kind of those pieces coming back so um the new additions uh for the Sharks uh one Doug Huda a former player he’s 58 um played in the league for for several seasons with uh the Wranglers and the Red Wings oh sorry in the WHL with the Wranglers um then he played with the Red Wings um Whalers King sa kind of bounced around for several years before uh Colin it quits after he retired uh became an assistant coach for the in the AHL with the Rochester Americans before Bec assistant coach in the NHL for the Boston Bruins where he won a cup I was with the Bruins from 2006 all the way to 2016 so a long time there uh with the Red Wings from then he got hired with the Red Wings from 2016 to 2022 uh was part of that kind of that rebuild phase for them so just something to keep in mind then the last two seasons with the Islanders and then hired by the Sharks he’s mainly kind of focused on the defense and the penalty kill um something that to kind of just keep in mind here is the penalty kill with the Islanders was last season the worst in the NHL so it’ll be I think hopefully wowski is kind of right if we’re gonna kind of give wski a pass for last for for kind of the defense last year as that was kind of his bread and butter um hopefully we can kind of we have to kind of give the same rules for for uh Huda here and as he hopefully gets a little bit of a pass with with that and uh see how their systems blend see what he can kind of maybe learn some new techniques from uh warski and be able to apply them but I think for Ryan warski is he is you know um definitely younger having a very experienced assistant coach like this a guy who’s Co been assistant coach for 20 years um I think that’s a smart play as a guy also who has won a Stanley Cup um with with Boston you know in that 20 was it 2011 right um I think it’s a smart smart play to kind of have I I even mentioned you know when they first when ran rovski was hired is do they maybe look to have a former NHL coach uh or like a very experienced assistant coach and I think it’s it’s kind of smart to have Huda who is a a very very experienced one assistant coach so then uh the Sharks hired um Jeff rmer uh so hmer 47 um he played in he kind of bounced around um another one that’s kind of grinder guys right played four years at University of North Dakota um played a played a couple a handful of games in NHL with the Rangers um played some AHL then went and played a ton over in uh Europe like bounced around in Europe for a long time from uh basically 20 2005 all the way to 2018 like he played a lot over in Europe basically you name a league you probably played in it so which is another good experience to have as especially with kind of where a lot of these sharks players are coming from um fair amount of Russian players he played in the KHL for a couple Seasons um fair amount of you know like it’s just nice to have a guy who’s kind of been around so um he for his coaching career started coaching with the Arizona Coyotes in 201 19 to 2020 where he is a director of Player Development skill development coordinator and assistant director of Special Projects so whatever that means but uh skilled development what do the seems like something very important for a very young sharks team to have uh and then he spent the last three seasons with the avisford Canucks in the AHL um as the assistant coach and those k teams were pretty solid teams you know usually in the top half of the Pacific there so um a skill development player who’s worked with young players and has kind of traveled the globe in his playing days feels like a really nice Fit For A young sharks team with a lot of players coming from a lot of different types of backgrounds so um I he’s also worked with the Ford so I assume that’s probably where he is going to settle in as well uh is working with the the Ford group here so um so yeah those are the Sharks new that’s that’s Ryan Wow’s coaching staff here um which on paper I’m I feel pretty solid about it um older assistant guy younger assistant uh who’s you know coming from that development path uh yeah I think that’s kind of feels about right I like I said I was wondering if they would maybe go try to find a former NHL head coach just to kind of give wowski a little bit of a shoulder there but um yeah I think uh I think it’s a pretty solid uh pretty solid additions to the staff so we’ll see see what happens when the actual Puck is dropped here um in a couple months so we’ll get caught up on some news and notes including uh if we might see a second round pick playing here in North America Way sooner than we thought um and a big very big Cuda Edition so we’ll get to that here in just one second all right uh let’s finish up um by getting kind of caught up on some news and notes uh we’ll talk start with eigor chernishov who the shark selected at 33 overall this past weekend’s draft um it’s unconfirmed unconfirmed but from the sounds of it it looks like he might be trying to get out of his KHL contract um so he could go play elsewhere um so shernoff had one more year left with Dynamo uh mosa in the KHL so his contract were to expired at the end of next season uh of course shov is 18 he’ll turn 19 at at the end of November uh was sought to be a first- round pick and the Sharks gladly swooped on him on this in the second round um you pair that with the news of the CHL import draft so um basically the all all the CHL teams right they have a massive two round draft so all you know I think they’re like 50 teams or 50 whatever how many teams are in the CHL there’s a lot they have a draft and they go through and they select um basically any non-north American type of players so like European players Russian players all that and they draft him for their rights and some you know majority of the time these guys don’t come over um you know but sometimes they do so Igor Coff’s rights were actually drafted by Sagen Spirit uh Sagal who won the Memorial Cup this year and also has a guy named zanen perek who was drafted by the Flames at Ninth overall um and is expected to be an absolute monster of a team again next year Sagal drafted his rights so what does that mean basically if if shernoff gets out out of his contract um he can kind of gives him some flexibility so he can either go play in the CHL just like Casper Halton in um he can sign at any time he can sign his ELC with the sharks um he could come play in the Barracuda or you could play in the NHL he’s not ready to play in the NHL of course right um and playing on the Barracuda like there’s also going to be a lot of young players so for a guy like chernishov maybe getting over here and yes it’s not going to be as stiff a competition as playing in the KHL but you’re he’s going to be playing a million minutes a night I think maybe taking the Casper Holton an approach of let me go play in OHL I’m gonna play on a really good team I’m gonna probably be playing top six minutes on this really good team um and see if I can just kind of wreck shop for a season and really kind of fill fill out my my goal scoring and my kind of get used to the faster paced um OHL game then get ready for the North American ice there um and then when your season’s done you can either go play in the Barracuda as since again when he was drafted he was in the KHL um so the NHL CHL agreement does not does not again just like Casper holson in the NHL CHL agreement will not uh he’s not part of it because he was part of a different team when he was drafted by the sharks um so chernishov I think that’s if I had to guess and bet if I was a Betty man I would say shernoff is in Sagen next year um and then he’s playing if he has a monster season there then he’s probably playing on the Barracuda um in the 2526 season so that would be my plan or my guess of what happens kind of just like Casper Halton it so uh we’ll see what what goes on if he goes back to the KHL then he goes back to the KHL and he’s going to be playing against uh grown men for a full season maybe not the minutes that you would hope but he is would be playing against different competition um and I think that wouldn’t be that also wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for him but uh selfishly I hope he comes to North America because I want to watch him and it’s much easier to watch OHL games it is to try to find uh weird KHL streams at some ungodly time in the morning so yes um other news the Barracuda also announced um the signing of Ford Andrew pallasi um pallasi is a massive signing for the bar the Barracuda quietly quietly having a really nice off season here with some of the additions that they’ve made and hopefully this is the year where the Barracuda is good but porosi he has gone to the AHL finals the cder cup um four straight I don’t want to say Seasons but because they didn’t have the call they didn’t have it it was canceled in 2020 and 2021 of course because of covid um but he went in 2019 and he’s been in the last three seasons with uh winning it twice so um he is basically the Corey Perry of the AHL but no uh portas he La so he’s just turned 30 he’s 30 he’s played 60 games with the Coachella last year where he scored 51 points including 15 goals and 36 assists um also huge on the power play uh he was part of uh so he’s with the Charlotte Checkers in 2019 and the Chicago Wolves in 20120 with a certain coach who coached that 2020 team uh Chicago Wolves that’ be Ryan wowski um so I think this is a a nice really nice addition for the Barracuda as they’re getting like legitimate AHL professionals who can kind of especially help some of these young guys along um probably you know he’s he’s definitely goingon to be a top six player for for the Barracuda um but if you want to pair him with Beast dead or you know like trist like you’re gives you more options it gives you you’re not having to kind of rely on some of these young guys to do so much and um it would be really fun to have a good Barracuda team uh one of these years so I I still think they they need to go find a kind of Veteran goalie um but I think there’s there’s a lot of pieces is on the Barracuda to actually like I’m going to talk myself into the Barracuda for like the third straight year um but yeah if they go if they go get like a a solid kind of AHL NHL NHL tweener goalie to pair with Romanov and to pair with Magnus krona like you could really start to kind of feel like this Barracuda team could be ready to to take a big step here and not be the worst team in the Pacific that they were the last couple seasons and hopefully get some playoff experience for some of these young guys like how fun would it be for you know a guy like Beast Dead uh or if gan’s still on the team or um because he’s not in the NHL or I guess even at the end of the season like Gan would probably go back and play in the AHL um like seeing some of these guys you know Cardwell in the playoffs sounds like a ton of fun to me um you know like seeing some of these guys play actually meaningful hockey uh meaningful playoff hockey and even if it’s for a series or two but it’ll just be such a huge experience for them and that’s kind of what the Sharks organization’s been looking to do and I I think as the you feel start to feel good about the direction of the Sharks organization I think some attention on the barracudas organization and trying to uh you know get this thing so it’s developing players but also kind of developing winning uh at some point too so um yeah I I think for the Sharks though I mean I think the Sharks had a really quiet really kind of quiet but I think a I mean it’s it’s hard to be quiet when you draft the first overall pick but um some of the free agent signings I’m really like um we’ll we’ll look at I was supposed to look at goalie say but of course the Sharks dumped all this so we’re going to go with this right now um so it’s probably next week if they have not looked at a goalie try to look at some of the the goalies out there who I think would be good fits for the Sharks Barracuda guys who can play on the Barracuda and kind of help prop that up and then if you need them to jump up to the NHL for a couple games um type of guys so we’ll dig into that here uh probably earlyish next week so that’s going to be it for me today we’ll be back tomorrow with reactions from way way way overreacting from the Sharks Prospect scrimmage um I will be in attendance so we’ll also have uh some footage from um the the we’ll have uh after the game footage we’ll have you know press availabilities all that fun stuff so make sure you follow along wherever you get Podcast of course you can watch on YouTube as well uh follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon sharks follow me on Twitter at my fry hole till tomorrow bye friends [Music]

A fan favorite returns home in Ryane Clowe, as the San Jose Sharks announce the hiring of Clowe to be the Assistant General Manager to Mike Grier. Analyze why Clowe is a great hire for the Sharks and their young players because of his background as a player and his work as a coach and a front office. Then, Ryan Warsofsky’s coaching staff was announced. While there were several returning faces, two new coaches, Doug Houda and Jeff Ulmer, were added. Examine each of their backgrounds and what they should add to the Sharks. Next, could Igor Chernyshov be playing in North America sooner than expected? Look at the rumors surrounding the termination of his KHL contract and his options for next year, including a path similar to Kasper Halttunen’s. Finally, the San Jose Barracuda announced the signing of Andrew Poturalski and why the Barracuda could be looking to take a big step this season.
