heck a lot of you are probably like Tim already enjoying the Fourth of July holiday Graham but you and I we are here we have a responsibility we do I’ll be here Friday you won’t I think I’m pretty much riding solo on Friday it’s going to be what it is but that’s you know what that’s fine there are things to talk about including the big topic that’s going on at least in this area and big fan base is the Carolina Hurricanes we’ve talked a ton about the Carolina Hurricanes obviously this week with NHL free agency starting on Monday and just leading up to it because there are so many conversations around is the team going to resign Jake kensel they’re going to trade Martin NES so on and so forth but the big now that the bulk of the the vast majority of free agency done at least at least the big names and all that have signed there might be a couple small deals here and there but otherwise the big ticket names are done now there’s still restrictive free agents like Seth Jarvis there’s still guys like Jack Drury what’s going to be their future what contracts are they going to sign so on and so forth so there’s still some decisions to be made but in terms of bringing in outside guys via free fre Agency for the most part that’s done and the big question that I’m seeing I know you’ve seen it Graham um by the way if you’re watching on YouTube live right now on 999 the fans YouTube page you can follow us along right there we read the comments Graham uh all the time in in the comment section on the videos that we post just to kind of get a gaaged with the fan base is saying how how people are reacting and we constantly you’re seeing the question of is this a playoff team yeah we went straight from Chicken Little to Sky Fallen yesterday to now asking the big question of hey let’s forget there’s still an 82 Game season to play next year is this team is this team playoff contingent for next season there’s still a ton that has to be determined between now and the end of the regular season which is in April but nonetheless the big question is among Carolina Hurricanes fans the Cane’s still a playoff team we’ve had some pretty good success here over the last six seasons six straight trips to the playoff the only team in the NHL to have won a postseason series over the last last six years or each of the last six seasons it’s been the Carolina Hurricanes but the question is looking at on paper with all that they’ve lost from Jake gensel Brady Shay Brett pesi Stephen n Tavo terrain all gone all gone I even throw Tony D’Angelo into that mix too all gone are they a playoff team all right look look at some of the guys they brought in Shane Gaspar whom we actually will hear that conversation uh he and I got a chance to talk earlier today we’ll have that conversation for you at 3:30 so Shane gasta Spar Carolina Hurricane’s defenseman coming back to Carolina after spending last year in Detroit we’ll talk to him at 3:30 so you look at him on the blue line along with Shawn Walker and some of the other guys like William kerer who officially signed his contract today uh was officially announced Jordan martinook coming back Jaylen Chatfield coming back and a and a few other signings that are kind of more like on the more depth players like more like third fourth line type guys so the question is again are they a playoff team I say yes but that margin is very very thin looking at it on paper that margin is very very thin the reason why I say yes is a few things one culture there’s a there’s a standard that’s set now of that team and there are guys in that locker room that already understand what the expectation is from the head coach and the organization the expectation they set to themselves it’s not like the AR sorry it’s not like it’s well the Arizona Coyotes now you know Utah Hockey Club it’s not like them or the Anaheim Ducks where there is no standard or expectation of winning that’s different here like last time I checked AO fetch slaven stall martinook many of these guys have been in this locker room over the last several seasons with the expectation of winning so that standard is there the culture of the team well actually hear some sound bites from Jordan martinook actually speaking of Jordan martinook he spoke to the media earlier today talk about that culture that chemistry in the locker room he discussed how important it is we got a bunch of great guys in our room and um good leadership and obviously it starts at the top with Rody and um I think uh the team has done a great job of bringing in good people um and then um it if you’re the good people just kind of mesh together and um it makes it easy to be a a locker room guy or make it E make it easy to have a good locker room when you have good people in there that just want uh one common goal and um that’s been a big big part of what the hurricanes have been and it’s made my my job I guess if that what you’re calling it uh pretty easy so yes that does matter the chemistry in the locker room how the guys interact with each other how they gel together all that stuff does matter it’s not like you have a collection of guys who hey I’m here for me and and and a paycheck I’m just here to you know boost my own number so the next contract rolls around I can get the highest dollar it’s not that selfish style of play and speaking of style of play let’s be honest the system that the Carolina Hurricanes play will will’ll keep them in every game this season it’s it’s just a fact it’s very rare that the Carolina Hurricanes get blown out it happens on occasion because it’s 82 games it happens we’ve seen it happen before but for the most part they’re in every single game this season their system allows that we talked to Shawn Walker the other day back on uh back on Tuesday or it was Monday I apologies we talked to Shawn Walker uh one of their latest signings and he said when we asked him what’s the perception of the Carolina Hurricanes from like another team standpoint because he played for a long time with the LA Kings played a little bit of time in Philadelphia played with the Colorado Avalanche some last year as well and it’s just the perception of the team is you know you’re in for it like you’re going to have to skate your tail off they’re going to press you all over the ice and it’s not going to be an easy night and there have been plenty of times Graham I know you and I will go down into the locker rooms post game I actually sometimes actually go to the visiting team’s locker room and I constantly hear the other team saying like I hate playing those guys like I just do because they just like I hate playing those guys is because it’s just Relentless pressured night in and night out they give you zero room to breathe so that’s gives you like a style of play that’s going to keep you in every single game but the big question is where’s the goal scoring coming from I feel like they’ve done a pretty good job replacing Brady Shay and Brett pesy with Gosa spare and Walker but where does the goal scoring come from So based on the number of goals the Carolina Hurricanes scored last year as a team and the goals they scored by players no longer with the team anymore so they scored from Rec Le was 277 goals in the regular season last year based on guys that are no longer on the team now so that’s gel I’m factoring in the number of goals gel scored with Carolina and not what he did in Pittsburgh right gensel gone U terraining gone Nason I even threw in guys like Tony D’Angelo and so forth pesy all those things Carolina needs to replace about 29% of its goal scoring 28.9% to be exact that’s a lot that’s a lot the number in the playoffs they scored 38 goals in the playoffs this past year 11 of those playoff goals are no longer with the team 28.9% again that’s a lot again about 80 regular season goals so it’s basically one goal per game no long longer there how you going to find one goal per game and it’s also 11 postseason goals that are missing how can it be replaced a few things one a healthy Andre fetch nikov fetch last year only played in 59 games he missed time at the start of the Year rehab him from the knee injury that he suffered at the end of the 2023 season Miss times at few points during the regular season 19 goals 33 assists is it too much for Andre snov a former second overall pick now going into age 24 to be a 30 35 goal scorer is that too much to ask look back to 2021 2022 he played 78 games 30 goals 39 assists 69 points nice season he has to St healthy second one if gen K Net’s off can he return to just being a 20 goal scorer not expecting him to be the 70 plus Point guy that he was in Washington but can he put up 20 and 25 he scored twice in the regular season for the canes last year and actually scored four times in the playoffs TI for second on the team by the way in the postseason he missed a lot of time in the NHL assistance program before Carolina acquired him so being out of the game for a while I’m talking several weeks like a couple months nearly he was out of like just wasn’t playing any hockey all of a sudden gets traded adjusting to a new style which we’ve said it before it can be very difficult for guys to adjust to that the man-on-man defensive style so he wasn’t super productive in the regular season but we did see him have production in the postseason with an offseason to train knowing the system and what’s expected can he return to being a 20g goal scorer I think he’s capable of being that he’s been there before and last one I’ll throw this one out there too Carolina Hurricanes have flirted with signing Vladimir teraso reportedly in the past why not not bring him in for one year one year Hired Gun now the question is oh can he play in Carolina system well he won a Stanley Cup just now with Florida now he started the year in Ottawa they acquired him close to the trade deadline Florida runs the same man-on-man system that the Carolina Hurricanes do and won a cup so can he do it yeah Hired Gun make it happen just for one season not asking for a long-term deal one year make it happen well you think he can’t get you 20 think you can’t get you 20 goals I think you can so are the Carolina Hurricanes a playoff team I say yes you might disagree that’s totally fine you have your right to think that and you know what you could argue me you could argue it and say no they’re not but the margin of erir is going to be small if you look at the division Rangers are still going to be good I think the Devils have a bounceback year Islanders still don’t scare me Washington still doesn’t SC scare me Philadelphia doesn’t scare me Columbus doesn’t scare me Pittsburgh’s old they don’t scare me one thing’s forc certain is that they’ll probably get another first round Series win when they had to play they had to play the Islanders yeah the Islanders the Flyers they might finish third in the Metropolitan Division the way things look right now for Carolina but guess what that gets you in the playoffs and that’s the only thing that matters get in the playoffs then let the playoffs take care of it self we saw Florida just a couple Seasons go go from as the eighth seed the last team in get all the way to the Cup finals just got to get into the playoffs then once you get into the playoffs like they say records are zero and zero so yes I think the canes right now are a cup team margin a though on paper thin might even be paper thin this is know what let’s this team needs some Rivals okay now K and Stanford they’re a rivalry there in the Bay Area that’s fine like that they can they can still have that they can bring that over but we need to assign Graham rivalries in the ACC we’re establishing new rivalries with Cal Stanford and SMU coming in let’s start with with SMU this one’s easy it’s Georgia Tech okay what people like why are you saying this with such confidence with such conviction Dennis why is it Georgia Tech let’s roll it back what’s old is new again right Graham the more things change the more they stay the same let’s roll it back to the 1950s let’s bring the 19 1950s rivalry back SMU and Georgia Tech played every year from 1950 to 1959 including a z0 tie in 1957 between the number three yellow jackets and the players that have come through gva obviously but what are they most known for where do they Excel it’s like the Olympic sports right swimming and Diving men’s basketball been good on both sides UVA more recently than Stanford obviously lacrosse is very big at UVA but it’s a lot of those quote unquote other sports Olympic sports that we like to say where those schools Thrive and obviously they’re can I say new for Shane Gaspar the Carolina Hurricanes defenseman uh Shane I normally would say welcome to Raleigh or welcome to Carolina but dare I say welcome home yeah I mean it’s great to be back obviously had my little cup of coffee a couple years ago so um definitely excited to be here you know for a longer term and you know ready to have some fun well the coffee must have tasted good if you wanted to come back you obviously had some options I mean you put up 56 points this past season in Detroit you definitely had some options where to go because every team out in the NHL wants that production from their blue line why come back to Carolina what was it about Carolina that brought you back um I would say just you know obviously opportunity you know obviously losing PES and shayy um you know that’s a big that’s a big hole to fill obviously I’m not saying I’m gonna do that per se but um you know obviously there’s a lot of opportunity the F familiarity with the organization that I’ve been here with before um and the interest the level interest I got from them was immediate um they were the first to you know offer me and um they were the first to you know express interest in in myself so you know I think it just checked all the boxes and um you know it’s definitely something I’m excited about Jane gosses be Carolina Hurricanes defenseman joining us here in the heaster Automotive Group hotline a couple days ago we talked to Shawn Walker another blue liner that’s being brought in to the franchise and he talked about how much he’s heard about the area and how great things are things that he’s heard knowing that you’ve experienced that how much comfort is that for you knowing the organization have some familiarity not just with the organization but the area the system on the ice how much comfort is that for you at least you know that for the next three years yeah exactly um you know obviously being there for almost three months um you know obviously you got the lay of the land and you know the good restaurants and just you realize how cool of a place rally is and you know just a family atmosphere it’s just a great town and the fans are great obviously too and you know just being in the building and having that buzz and you know and obviously the organization the organization is you know Second To None it’s a first class organization and you know it’s a place that you know they make you feel wanted and you know it’s going to be a lot of fun it’s okay this is a safe space you can tell us that Detroit did not have the barbecue like we do down here you could totally say that that’s totally fine that’s totally you could totally do that uh Shane gos be joining us here in the he for Automotive Group hotline uh did you talk to Jaylen Chatfield any I know he signed for three years we talked to him a couple weeks ago after he resigned I knew you skated alongside him a lot when you’re here in Carolina a couple couple seasons ago have you had any conversations with Jaylen uh he just texted me congratulations and whatnot and you know when he signed I sent the same thing to him and you know I’m just excited to be back you know with all the guys I think my first text I texted Marty saying I’m back and I think he answered right away so you know it’s it’s pretty pretty special to see all the guys you know texting me saying you know they’re happy I’m back and you know all the coaches reaching out so you know it’s pretty exciting time how does the system for Carolina and that that man-on-man defensive style that they play that we actually starting to see a lot more teams in the league start to use especially since the Florida Panthers just won a cup playing a similar style how much have you seen the game changed and how grueling is it for you as a skater to to play that style of play and again we’re seeing this throughout the league teams are starting to adapt to that style yeah I mean luckily for myself I’m a pretty good skater so uh you know definitely the system is a little bit of shock to the system when you first start playing it but you know it’s a hectic system in the sense you know it’s hard for you know offensive teams to you know get that breathing room that separation that they need to you know make special plays so you know it’s an easy system it’s cut and dry in the sense you know it sounds pretty idiot proof in the sense you could just you know stay on your man and go wherever he goes but you know obviously it’s it’s a little grueling on the engine but you know it’s just a system you know I I believe I can play and um I enjoy playing Jane gosis bear joining us here on the heaster Automotive Group hotline uh coming in what were the conversations that you had maybe with Rod in the front office about hey what’s your role going to be like this this coming season obviously when you came in it was right at the trade deadline the team was kind of already locked in you had to adapt but now that you have an offseason to prepare have you had any conversations about what your role might look like for this upcoming year um not too many about certain you know specific role but you know obviously Rody said I’ll I’ll be getting some looks on the power play and whatnot you know it’s a you know special part of my game and um you know obviously just you know wanting to be there in the sense that you know there is a lot of opportunity and you know I’m going to do whatever is after to me so you know I’m an easygo guy in the sense that you know I want to play and I want to do whatever helps the you know heaster Automotive Group hotline Graham I’m I’m excited that he’s back I really am and I think his role this my assumption when I asked him about this my guess is he’ll probably play on a third defensive pair and it wouldn’t shock me if he actually plays with Jaylen Chatfield would wouldn’t would not be shocked if if Shawn Walker one of their newest signings on defense plays with Demetri Olof would would not would not be shocked by that in the least I think just to kind of how guys balance each other out on the ice right right I I probably was expecting more Demetri orof and Jaylen Chatfield to play but I would not be surprised by that I I think that’s something that Rod will they’ll they’ll figure out that as the season progresses but again there’s a little familiarity with Chatfield with Olaf and with and with gpar uh but nonetheless I think there’s um I think there’s an opportunity for him to probably be a third defense pair guy but again probably going to get a lot of power play time because Brent Burns is getting up there or he is up there in age and if there’s a way to maybe help reduce his minutes a little bit is to make sure that you can have someone that can quarterback power play right um and maybe take some of that load off of Brent Burns I think that’s a good thing just because we saw during the playoffs when Brett pesi got hurt and Tony D’Angelo was in Tony D’Angelo not really a good penalty killer so Brett Burns had to take on more penalty killing responsibility in terms of those minutes on top of being on a power play and all the even strength minutes that he was playing he kind of wore down a little bit as as great a shape as he in he is in he did wear down a little bit so I think maybe taking some of that off of his plate will be a good thing in the long run but I’m excited I I I like what Carolina did on defense super cost effective with Gosa bear and with Walker I like the moves are they as strong I don’t know maybe not quite but it’s not a weak point you know it’s not they the their their blue line again is probably going to be the strength of their team right and that’s a good thing that’s a good thing but speaking of guys that are coming back Jordan martinook coming back he spoke to the media earlier today Jordan martinook signed a three-year contract extension at a shade over $3 million a year it’s like 3.05 million so you know tack on that extra 50 Grand Jordan martinook spoke to the media earlier today just a couple hours ago and he said how important it was to get a deal done here in Carolina yeah I think when it when it came down to it it was um I I didn’t want to leave and if there was a chance to stay I was gonna do everything I can to stay so um it presented itself kind of towards the end that it there was going to be an opportunity and I would I’m thrilled to be back um it’s it’s hard to think about leing a place that you’re so comfortable and love so much so I’m very happy to be back now big question was Graham because we didn’t hear of this contract extension until really early Monday they didn’t agree to it until late Sunday night so Jordan martinook was asked were did you entertain any other offers yeah there was uh there’s definitely some some other options out there and definitely entertaining them but um I’m glad it got done towards the end of it and um yeah happy to be back this is something that for us we can’t fully grasp is for what he does for work all right there are 32 places that he could work in North America that’s it just 32 and the place that you want to work and have been employed and you want to stay may not want you back that’s a very difficult thing to do so you have to weigh your options about all right well what’s next where am I going to go and he actually did talk about if he was concerned if the Carolina Hurricanes weren’t going to offer him yeah um up until kind of the last day of free agency we were prepared to go somewhere else so um I gotta give uh give my wife a lot of credit and a couple pths on the back and maybe a stiff drink because uh the last week uh kind of put her through the ringer um with with everything that’s gone on and um I’m just happy that she’s uh she’s been supportive and my family everybody’s been supportive and um it’s good to good good to be back in in a place that we’ve laid down a a nice nice home I think that’s something that’s lost Graham when we think about athletes in free agency because it’s like well you’re G to go play you’re going to make millions somewhere like what what’s the big deal he’s got two young kids yeah I think I think somewhere around the ages of like four like two to four I think is where his two kids are one of them was actually running around in the background of the zoom of the zoom meeting it just makes you realize like at the end of the day and I know this is going to sound crazy to say considering the industry we work in it’s this is just Sports yeah there’s a much bigger picture to think about and for a lot of these guys it is the family and the bonds and the relationships they’ve made here in our city in our community of Raleigh and I think that’s something that we actually when we talked to Shawn Walker the other day about this and he had heard so much about how great the community is here and how a lot of players that play here want to stay here even after they retire I mean look at Justin Williams started his career somewhere else came to Carolina bounced around a few other other places came back to Carolina retired and still lives here there are guys like Bates pagia and Eric Cole guys that live here in this area they stayed here for a reason because they enjoyed living here so much and for him young guy young family yeah you put those roots here like you you get in a routine of all right where am I taking my kids where am I taking my family this was a big thing when we saw Jacob slaven signed his contract extension he’s like I’ve built the foundation our family has of of living here and we put roots in this area this is where we want to be and that’s something that for a lot of guys is can be very difficult when the place that you want to go to might not also want you like it’s a two-way street like hey I want to be in this I’m committed to staying here the other side’s got to commit to you as well that’s also we saw with Jordan Stall one of the reasons why he got the deal done here with Carolina is he wanted to be here he said I’m not going anywhere else Jordan martinook had I’m sure plenty of options St gosses bear had plenty of options we had Shawn Walker hey you had a big productive season you have plenty of options and guys wanted to stick around here um I didn’t say this the other day actually probably about two or three weeks ago um maybe longer than that was like about four weeks ago went to the movies with my girlfriend I’m walking out guess who’s walking in with his family who’s that Jordan martinook there you go him his wife his two kids got a chance to say hey to him it was it was it was a really cool moment it’s like oh yeah you guys are just as part of this community as I am yeah I mean don’t forget the cool stuff that Jory martinook has done during his time here in Raleigh he was the the alpha wolf at the N State football game last year he’s a big NC State fan he actually bullies he bullies Seth Jarvis for being a fan ah see that that makes sense and then don’t forget he performed with Nickelback at Walnut Creek last year when they were in town and then he also has the deal with R&D Bruin for the the Marty party I can’t remember the exact name but the Mexican logger that he has with his name attached to it so yeah I can only imagine he was probably sitting there sweating when it came to Monday and he and all of last week too and he did not know exactly what was going to get done with this deal now here’s the thing he stayed Jaylen Chatfield stayed some of these other guys mentioned are staying but not everyone is sticking around Jordan martinook actually did talk about how Bittersweet it is to see teammates leave as as a teammate you’re disappointed that they’re gone but as a friend you’re happy because obviously they went somewhere where they think they’re gonna they’re gonna enjoy and um I pretty sure everybody’s happy with um the deals they got so as a friend you’re excited for them but as a team you always want to keep keep your team together as much as possible but um just happy for for my friends but um as a hurricane wish uh those guys were back but um happy with the additions that we made and um I know Tom and Eric there they’re probably not done so um look forward to seeing what’s going to happen with with Ary so a few things in there yeah from the teammate standpoint would love to see my all the guys come back hey let’s run it back again but as martinook understands as well as anybody there’s the business side of these things as well yeah and if I’m a friend of these guys hey man I’ll pump that you got that deal we all know how hard it is to make it in this business in this industry I’m talking about if if I’m Jordan Martin noer really any hockey player any pro athlete how hard it is to make it in the business and to see a friend of yours and someone that you care about get rewarded for that work you got to you can’t help but be happy for that guy unless he he was a terrible teammate and that’s a little bit different but as Jord Martin said don’t have those guys in the locker room don’t have those bad apples so there’s again there’s both sides of it yeah you want to see your teammate come back let’s run this thing back but every single one of those guys that left for Carolina Tim mentioned this the other day with the exception of maybe Tav ter Vin Tav ter vinan basically making the same amount of money per year as he was in Carolina but Brett pesy pay bump Brady Shay Pay bump Stephan n Big Time September now I need to go to Creed just to make sure that I can see Jordan Martin look there if he happens to be there one of the reasons why here in our area in the state of North Carolina and this area that makes Sports so special is the rivalries that we get to see like our our area is so unique and special in that regard because we have three big time College athletic departments in our in our front yard our backyard and as our neighbor depending on where you live with State Duke Carolina just here in the Triangle I mean that’s that mean expanded a little bit further factoring East Carolina app Wake Forest bring the whole bunch in the mix but that’s what makes this area so special and rivalry’s Run Deep I know a lot of people that might be new to the area within the last few years and maybe have ingrained themselves in these rivalries a little bit but we all know how no matter really where you grew up in the country How Deeply rooted did Duke and Carolina are as a rival right we we all understand that especially in the world of college basketball but we also understand if you’ve been in this state for any length of time the NC State UNCC rivalry just across the board how much of a rivalry that is and Armando bot formerly of UNCC basketball now signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Utah Jazz he was on a podcast the the title League was hosted by Theo pinen former Carolina guy they started talking about this this previous college basketball season and gr we’re going to jump to the one about the elite eight uh that sound cut so armanda Bott talking with Theo Pinson on podcast that just released earlier this week said he was cheering for Duke in the Elite 8 yeah no I can’t stand n State bro it’s something about they just bro you know how sick I would have been if they won it this year oh my gosh I wanted Duke to win I wanted Duke to go to the final four I didn’t want NC stay to go to the final four cuz like Duke going to the final four like I knew they I knew like they were good enough they were good enough and like Duke maybe if they beat produ fine they won’t be in Yukon and it’s like yeah that would like it’ll be like Remembered at Duke for maybe two to three years and then after that like they didn’t win it all like so be it like d but like NC State like they never going to let this go oh man I when I heard this I gra I was just like oh man like boom antenna’s perked up I I was like oh man I love the fact that I love the fact that in sports you can root against somebody and I it to me it’s okay it’s okay to root against another school or another team I think it’s fine some people might not like it and disagree with it that’s okay but these again these rivalries Run Deep decades deep for long before you and I were even born Graham and they’re going to continue long after we’re gone and you know what that’s what makes it fun that’s what makes it so special and actually Armond Bott had some blame to shed towards Duke actually but like NC State like they never going to let this go not they beat us in the championship then they beat Duke in the um beat Duke in the ELA and I blame Duke too because Duke shouldn’t have lost to him in the ACC tournament that’s where it all start were they doing I don’t know and then like you know how it Go in March when the team get hot they hard to beat them they hard to beat they was cooking with fish that’s I mean even for me I mean I was like you look at all the other games versus burns like we go at it like d but like he just had confidence that game like that last it was it was a long night you do it was a long night you can do it was a long night for me I ain’t gonna lie shout out to DJ bir yeah shout out to DJ now he a killer for sure so two things in there one he blamed Duke for not getting the job done I think it was Thursday the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament against uh against NC State um Duke just had a bad game uh that day for sure but again NC State kind of got hot in the ACC tournament and then also here’s the thing you could have hate towards a team and towards a program not want to see them be successful but still give them the respect that’s due armo Bott just show that for DJ Burns he like yeah man that dude cooked me man like that that that dude went off that night he got the better of me that night and you got to give credit where credit is do that’s what Bott did I think I really expect Amano Bott because in this podcast not only does he do something where let’s be honest if any other Carol former Carolina basketball player that did not wi help to win a National Championship like let’s say I don’t know an Andrew playtech if an Andrew playtech said that he was cheering for Duke at any point in a college basketball season he’s Carolina cancelled like he’s not claimed by Tor Hill fans anymore but the fat arm Bott openly said he was cheering for Duke I respect him then the fact he also openly said like yeah when I played and as Tim would say it’s 4:00 football at 4 you can set your watch by it I was thinking about this today Graham there’s been so much of the conversation over the last several years and really over the last year about the Carolina Panthers has been mostly negative right and justifiably so you went two and 15 you fired another head coach you you fired your general manager things obviously did not turn out well with the Bryce Young trade so far and obviously seeing the guy that you pass on CJ stra ball out and it has not been good overall you you look and see guys like oh wait DJ DJ Moore no longer here uh Christian mcaffrey no longer here Brian Burns no longer here what do we have to show for it we went 2 and 15 so again a lot of the conversation around the Carolina Panthers has been negative and that’s understandably so and a lot of panthers fans are frustrated and I get it justifiable also I’m sure a lot of panthers fans are tired of people talking crap about their team I totally get it so you know what I chose positivity today Graham uhoh what do you mean uhoh mean uh oh but it I mean you just mentioned it all when the Carolina Panthers that’s that’s dangerous optimism can be a dangerous thing with this franchise hope is what kills you now but I am going to give you three reasons about why you should be excited about this upcoming year I’m not saying the Carolina Panthers are going to be a playoff team not saying that at all I’m on the record saying they’re probably a five six win team five6 win team which is an improvement over two wins all right I still think there’s a lot of holes on their roster there’s not much depth there are still a lot of things that this team has going have to figure out over the next few years but I do think there are are steps in the right direction and I’m going to give you three reasons as to why I think that and things that you should be excited about again I don’t think they’re a playoff team unless you’re of offensive football mhm it was there were things up front there were things schematically that we needed to work on and um that wasn’t to NFL standard and certainly not to Carolina Panthers 2024 standard okay so that was Dave Canales head coach of the Carolina Panthers on with Peter shreer on his podcast yeah the offense last year was not up to NFL standards I think that we can all objectively say that I mean heck Dave Canal saw it up close and personal in the final game of the regular season he saw it twice that’s the thing now granted I think his team only did what a combined total of 36 points something like that babe more than 12 and Charlotte yeah but nonetheless the offense is going to be revamped in terms of what Dave Canales obviously saw the offense last year up close in person but also just the offensive personnel has evolved right you actually went and got yourself a legit number one receiver in Deontay Johnson might say legit someone actually could separate from coverage so you got yourself a number one wide receiver so you’re not asking 34y old Adam thielen to be your number one guy you also went and drafted a receiver in the first round this year and Xavier Le get hopefully his hamstring and everything is all good this year and he stays healthy so you went ahead and add two pieces on the perimeter you also drafted jaavi and Sanders as a tight end extremely good athlete still some things to to mold and work on but that’s where coaching comes in I’ll get into that here in just a second but also you went and got a running back in the second round and Jonathan Brooks from Texas still recovering from that ACL injury we’ll see how much he’s able to do but also importantly in free agency you signed two offensive lineman interior offens lineman and Robert hunt and Damen Lewis this offense is going to be revamped around Bryce young going into his second year to me that’s reason for optimism because it’s not just the same people coming back last year it’s not the same people calling plays it’s a revamped offense and we obviously there’s an emphasis from Dave Canalis on running the football a revamped offense and I think they’re actually going to have some semblance of an identity at least they know what they want to be are they capable of doing that time will tell number two last year the Carolina Panthers defense was like the bright spot right they kept them in some games were they perfect far from it there are some things in terms of red zone defense and and lack of quarterback pressure that can be improved but the addition of ason Robinson with Derek Brown to me is is exciting if I’m a Panthers fan because they’re going to wreak havoc on offenses especially up the middle they’re going to wreak havoc on other teams they’re going to make life miserable in the Run game they should hopefully make life miserable for quarterbacks forcing them to to run out out of the pocket flush out of the pocket all those different things those two guys up front along with shy Tuttle should wreak a lot of havoc and that to me is exciting I know it’s not the sexy thing because you know we get so wrapped up in fantasy football stats and all those kinds of things and yards and touchdowns and blah blah blah blah blah that’s the reason for excitement is because Dave Canales clearly is emphasized it all starts with the ball they’re clearly Dave Canalis and Dan Morgan are building everything from starting with the ball where it snapped outward and you got one of the best defensive linemen in the entire NFL and Derek Brown and you added a beast up front with ason Robinson which should help everyone else that’s another reason to get excited I think this Panthers defense is going to be extremely difficult to run on this coming season and lastly the thing that actually has me excited the most Graham there’s a new culture with the Carolina Panthers the identity of this team has over the last several years has been there there’s been no identity there’s been no identity for this team for the last several years the only time we actually really saw a semblance of an identity over the last five six years is when Steve wils was the interim head coach he brought that keep pounding mindset tough physical run the football tough defense that’s how they had to play in order to be in games and for the most part could most part it worked now the personnel and all that wasn’t great there were some flaws obviously him being the interim head coach and being shoved into that position was not an ideal thing for him or say not shoved in that position being put in that position not an ideal thing but there actually seems to be a semblance of culture and identity with this franchise that hasn’t been there in a long long time the way Dan Morgan and Dave Canales have talked about the guys that they want to bring in via the draft and through free agency the culture of this team clearly there’s a shift and if you’re a Panthers fan that should be the most exciting thing for you personnel and some things like that schemes all that stuff’s going to change over time that’s all going to evolve but the culture of the team the way that’s invol evolved they clearly looked at some guys and said you know what Von Bell we’re not going to save a lot of money by letting you go but you’re out of here Hayden Hurst we’re not going to save any money by letting you go but you’re out of here they clearly made some big time Bradley Bosman sorry you’re gone they clearly identifi guys on their team and say you know what we’re going to make sure that the culture of this team is to where we want it Dan Morgan’s comment we want want dogs right right fear the logo want dogs we we should actually cuz we know we have the Bry ometer that we have uh you know during the regular season we should have like the the D Morgan like you dog ometer or something like that dog like exactly the Dog House Dan Morgan’s dog D Morgan’s dogghouse like to the bottom left you’re not very good you’re a little poodle or something like that if you make a lot of noise but you’re not really super aggressive maybe you’re a little doxen whatever it might be if you’re a little scared and skinnish maybe you’re like a little terrier mix but you still look cute though maybe I don’t know we’ll have to come over the Dan Morgan’s dogghouse meter I’m not entirely sure but the culture of this team clearly is turning in the right direction and that’s the thing we really should get Panthers fans most excited it’s the year over the next couple Seasons now I think the 25 26 season is a player option I’m not entirely sure now we say that to bring up this Graham as we quit that and hit this cuz that’s enough that’s enough of LeBron James talk right there so we with that we hit this JJ reick former Duke guard as we know is the head coach of the LA Lakers LeBron James podcast H imagine yeah LeBron James is running the Lakers he got his podcast Co his podcast co-host hired to be the head coach and got his son drafted nonetheless but JJ reck is rounding out his coaching staff included in that Nate McMillan formerly head coach of the Atlanta Hawks he’s uh even just recently as a couple seasons ago got to the Eastern Conference Finals uh with uh with Trey young he’s part of the Lakers staff he’s from Raleigh he’s from right here in Raleigh he played at NC State in the mid 80s under Jim valano he’s part of the Lakers coaching staff now with JJ reick so more local ties to this area to one of if not the biggest brand names of professional basketball in the LA Lakers grahe I think it’s kind of cool to see Nate McMillan being part of the Lakers staff under J with JJ reck you have an NC State bloodline you have a Duke bloodline as you mentioned they’re part of the top program not program top franchise in all of the NBA although you can make the argument that right now it’s the Boston Celtics one of the top yep but nonetheless up there at the top it’s only just would have been nice if we had gotten some local guys to play on the Lakers so that way we could have had sort of this whole big triangle connection with the Los Angeles Lakers and then LeBron James kind of being the centerpiece of it now here’s something that I think is important for JJ reck is he’s never coached outside of coaching his like aaou teams for his kids yeah he’s never coached I think it’s valuable to have a a guy like Nate McMillan who’s coached at different spots around the NBA including having been a head coach himself and has made it into Eastern Conference Finals as a head coach we people that made follow the NBA know the name Trey young point guard for the Atlanta Hawks there’s been ups and downs in his career in terms of how or I guess and the the success of the team the only time that he’s gotten deep into the playoffs when Nate McMillan was his head coach and I think that’s valuable for JJ reick to have someone like Nate McMillan to lean on I think that’s something that’s a it’s a great move I think by JJ reick to have Nate McMillan on his staff again a veteran coach who’s been around the league been in in different spots but has had success as well in the playoffs I think that is something very valuable for JJ reic all right Graham let’s quit that let’s hit this uh well I mean are you a smart guy I don’t know if I’m a smart man but I know what love is and I apparently Carolina Panthers fans love the tailgating scene it in Charlotte so this actually comes from um a website or or program director Paul sent this to us about Carolina Panthers fans actually being the seventh happiest in the NFL now again there’s a caveat to this this all comes with the in the world of tailgating so according to uh olbg was like online betting group.com olg.com they did a study in terms of like on an online study in terms of how different fan bases feel about the tailgating scene in their area and things along those lines obviously here in the state of North Carolina especially this area with the college sports scene that we have tailgating is a massive thing So based off scores like positive conversations online factoring also negative conversations um different stuff that go online regarding specifically tailgating scene Panthers fans apparently seventh happiest Graham apparently the joy takes place outside the stadium before the the game actually kicks off or you got to have a little bit of liquid courage to go inside Bank of America Stadium to watch the action you know there might be a little bit of that I wonder as well with the amount of uh fans from other teams that show up to games they’re like hey you know what we’re about to go inside and get this wind let’s go hang out let’s let’s grill a little bit let’s throw some dogs on let’s go you know hang out drink a couple colds before we go inside and watch our team beat up on the this Panthers team well see that’s the surprising thing I went to my first Carolina Panthers game this past season it was actually the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game at the end of the season and some of my friends were at a tailgate spot right outside the stadium and what’s actually cool about it is the tailgate spot is a bar but it’s also part radio station yeah and it’s actually where WFNZ TM and Bone who you can hear quite often on this program it’s where they do their show out of I think it’s called The Dugout or something yeah I know exactly what you’re talking about they extra spot it’s right outside Bank of America but a majority of it were Buccaneers fans that had either made the travel up to Charlotte or just residents here then want to go to the games but I mean if I ever go back to a Carolina Panthers game I’m definitely going to go back to to The Dugout for sure I hope I’m getting the name right I think I think it I think you are but I will say this I’ve been to Charlotte multiple times for ACC Championship games and Panthers games and the area around Bank of America Stadium is really nice yeah it’s actually one of the more it’s actually one of the better experiences I’ve had actually going to and from NFL stadi stadiums and and watching professional sporting events and that’s something that as part of your Fan Experience tailgating parking getting to and from that’s all part of the experience right because obviously you got to get to and from the game that all factors into it because if you’re in a ticked off mood because traffic stinks parking’s terrible you got to walk however long got to pay a super amount of money like your tailgating situation is not that good whatever it is you want to do getting to the game and you already go into it with a mindset of like gosh you’re frustrated from everything you had to deal with getting to the game and then the team on the field stinks it only just adds more to it nobody wants to ride a train into a stadium I know Charlotte has the transit system but it still gives you the option where you can still walk in the Bank of America Stadium my former roommate he lived in Washington for two years when he first graduated and he said don’t be mistaken the Washington Commander Stadium oh it stinks not it’s not DC he says you have to take an hourong train ride to go into FedEx F it’s it’s in Landover Maryland and that getting in and out of that place that place sucks I’ll say that flat out that place stinks so so Panthers fans that is the one thing to be thankful for Bank of America Stadium might be one of the nicest stadiums as far as just the environment and the landscape around it it makes it very easy and accessible to get to and I know they’re adding Renovations both in and around Bank of America Stadium over the next several years as part of like I think a $800 million deal y u with you know teer Sports you know teer you know the owner of the Panthers and the City of Charlotte so there’s a lot of money that’s going to be put into around that area I like that area around Bank America Stadium I think it’s really nice and I’ve been to games like Lincoln Financial Philadelphia I’ve been to sporting events at Bank of America hinfi when I guess it’s now it’s Acer up in Pittsburgh Landover I’ve been to several different places and Bank of America has been one of the better experiences just getting to him from well also the one thing I’ll say to close out on this you’ve seen the area that’s right down the road the the garden that or not the garden but the um the park the park that’s right there AC for ACC Championship has like a FanFest fan Zone all going on through we’ve done live shows out there before right and when North Carolina South Carolina opened the college football season and the Dukes Mayo classic college game day was there and when you go back and watch that broadcast look at how many people they were able to pack in there I mean it made that game look like it was a big deal I know it’s easy to say that because we live the state but I’m sure if you’re watching on National broadcast that game probably looked like it was one of the more bigger college football games of that week and that’s where NC state has a big game against Tennessee early in the year in September and that’s a 7:30 kickoff right there at Bank of America and Charlotte it really is a fun experience down there in Charlotte for games all right let’s quit that let’s hit this uh by the way Fourth of July tomorrow happy 4th of July to everyone out there everyone hopefully you stay the motor club actually predicts that 70.9 million people will travel 50 miles or more during that period 60.6 million are expected to travel by car an increase of 2.8 million from the same time period or the same period in 2013 so uh or 2023 I should say so should I wait to go to wilmingon tomorrow morning instead rather than tonight that’s a good question that’s a really good question uh not a lot of people are going to be on the road tomorrow morning so if you want to get out and go early that’s a good time to go it also says the worst times to hit the road will be between 2 p.m. and 700 p.m. on Wednesday and Sunday according to a transportation data analysis okay so between 2: and 7:00 p.m. so Graham wait till after 7:00 p.m. that you can go down to Wilmington well good thing I the hot dog etiquette there’s something that you found online about proper hot dog etiquette we want to make sure we play this for the people Everyone Loves hot dogs but not everyone follows proper etiquette when they enjoy this sacred All-American food so here are some dos and don’ts to prevent you for making a Frank faux PA don’t use fancy buns with Franks this is considered go do stick to sesame seed poppy seed or plain buns with hot dogs don’t serve hot dogs on fancy China always use a paper plate or everyday dishes dress the dog not a bun wet condiments like mustard and chili are applied first followed by chunky condiments like relish onions and sauerkraut followed by shredded cheese followed by spices like celery salt or pepper don’t put herbs on the same plate as a hot dog that’s just well Frank tenses don’t bring wine to a hot dog barbecue Beer soda lemonade and iced tea are preferable don’t ever use utensils to eat a hot dog on a bun eat them only with your hands don’t take more than five bites to finish a hot dog for a foot long weener seven bites are acceptable wow okay big bites there a few other tips to maximize your hot dog eating experience don’t leave bits of bun on your plate eat it all and perhaps the cardinal rule never ever put ketchup on a hot dog after the age of 18 we all have to grow up sometime and besides Legend has it that within the city limits of Chicago you could be arrested for such an offense okay um a few things there including the the ketchup bit there at the very end which we we’ll get into there in just a little bit first of all a few things paper plate or or normal everyday you know you know dishes that’s that’s totally fine for for hot dogs yeah I love as much as the next person but I’m not bringing out fine china for my hot dog no exactly no no no fancy plates or anything like that paper plates perfectly acceptable um also yeah no wine with it again soda beer lemonade tea all all go with a hot dog stop stop with that IPA mess yeah and you know what just a simple plain bun it’s all you need nothing super fancy doesn’t have to get over the top now one thing a couple things to disagree with I actually sometimes actually like putting the condiments On the Bun because it wraps around the hot dog as opposed to just putting it directly on top of the hot dog I’m okay with either I’m okay with either it seems like she scolded that but the thing that really got me there Graham was this no catchup on a hot dog on hot dog past the age of 18 I was like I feel attacked Graham I put ketchup and mustard on my hot dogs there are people out there that put mayonnaise on hot dogs get that crap out of here it would not surprise me also if there are some parts of Chicago where you could get arrested for putting probably there’s I mean there’s hot dog places that do not serve ketchup that is like a legit thing yeah disrespected yeah like okay that’s fine that’s a choice but I put ketchup and mustard on my hot dogs I mean I see the argument it’s almost like when you get a nice steak and you ask for steak sauce it’s like a good steak should not be required yeah a good steak does not requireed steak sauce that is disrespectful but yeah ketchup on a hot dog is fine get over yourselves people ketchup on a hot dog is okay the seven bites though for seven bites for a foot long all right dive deep weight around need a little size up front Kane’s got it now he’s not going to chip in a whole lot in the goal scoring front that’s fine but what he’s brought in to do two million bucks a year I like it so that was officially announced today by the Carolina Hurricanes now the big question Graham is what’s up with Mar teenages there you have it what is it I was going to say I know this do we know anything I know this question has been beaten upside the head it’s been asked as many times until you uh until the cows come home or until you’re R in the face but to me I mean I I feel like the conversation regarding Martin NES has kind of been lost in the weeds a little bit with the frenzy of contract signings during the opening hours of NHL free agent Market I it was assumed Eric tulsky would move NES before or during the recent 2024 NFL draft in the hockey news Jason new sided Sports Nets Elliot Freeman claiming the Hurricanes were close to a deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets involved in NES they were and the Blue Jackets first round pick which is going to be the fourth overall in this year’s draft I know you also J or re joked around the bullpen it seems like all the hockey experts all the bigname hockey guys like Elliot Freeman are just like asleep like they’re just H everything got quiet so if you look actually look at the um at day one of the NHL free agency signing period which began on Monday July 1st first there were like like 38 signings I want to say day one of the draft it was like 1.2 billion dollar total of contracts a capital B were dished out yes with a capital b capital dollar sign billions out there today I think there’s been like four yeah or maybe three less than that that’s kind of where things are sitting right now in terms of NHL free agency it dried up real fast so the next logical thing is the next step is trade market it’s the trade market now with the trade market there’s a little bit less of like a deadline we like we got to get stuff done now but I think teams are realized like okay what we what were we able to do fore agency who were we able to sign what holes are still needed now let’s sit back re-evaluate what we have what we need and what we can get and how we can get it that’s what teams are probably figuring out right now now now again there’s been a couple like lowlevel lack of a better term lowlevel signings for example the Carolina hurricane signed for Riley Stillman to a two-way contract not moving the needle just put it that way fine actually I take that back there were 190 signings on day one of uh of of NHL free agency back on Monday $1.2 billion doar or just over that in terms of contract signings total contract dollars for 190 signings today eight signings eight to me just remember how crazy it was where it felt like at one point in time I didn’t even remember for storm tracker when I was filling in uh when it was me and Tim I asked him I was like Tim at this point what teams are not putting their names in a more inis like trade situation mhm and now just it’s like tumble weeds yeah exactly it’s it’s amazing how it went from um literally half the teams in the NHL have caught about Martin NIS and and just a lot of lot of offers apparently were put in and this is was kind of like Carolina trying to weigh what the best offer and all that kind of stuff was and it seemed like things had moved forward with Martin NES to be traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets right he was the centerpiece of that and coming back would have been the fourth overall pick um me there other there’s some other parts that would have been included with that now the Columbus Blue Jackets decided like nope we’re actually going to take the center Prospect Kaden Lindstrom yep which was one of the highest rated prospects in this draft obviously he went fourth overall this is he was a centerman who played who was like 63 215 which from like Carolina would have been like yes and that happened after I would have been like absolutely that happened after Nature’s was permitted to speak with the Blue Jackets too so they had a conversation so they had a conversation and reportedly the agent had come to an agreement with the Columbus Blue Jackets like they had agreed upon a deal in terms of dollars and all that kind of stuff and when the agent presented it to Martin AES he said nope I don’t want to sign there now is this just they just said no I’m not going to sign a contract extension with that franchise Dennis let me ask you this fall apart is this just as simple as maybe Eric tski is having second thoughts now about moving NES after Jake genso decline to sign his contract extension is that it um I think there is legit I think there’s legit there’s legitimacy to that I should say I think there is Because unless you’re getting something big in return for team that’s willing to part with somebody who plays that spot you’re not going to just give him up for pennies on a dollar you’re not because teams have inquired about Martin NIS he’s been quoted reportedly a center of multiple potential trades involved in the Carolina Hurricanes and guess what he’s still a Carolina hurricane so I think there’s some legitimacy to that I think there is now also we are 12 days away from this but is there a chance this goes to arbit arbitration I think that’s the next that’s the deadline so July 15th is is the arbitration deadline for the NHL so guys that have rights for arbitration are for example Jack Drury uh Martin NES are eligible for arbitration now arbitration in the NHL means if you do not agree upon a deal both sides present to an Arbiter this is how much we think this player should make the player and his AG and say this is how much we think the player should make so both sides present a salary and it’s up to the Arbiter to decide how much that player is going to make for one season now again sometimes it doesn’t always get to arbitration sometimes deals get worked out but July 15th is going to be very telling I think it’s by it would probably happen before then if it’s going to happen I guess it will be before then but who knows who knows this is the Panthers just won a cup playing a similar style how much have you seen the game changed and how grueling is it for you as a skater to to play that style of play and again we’re seeing this throughout the league teams are starting to adapt to that style yeah I mean luckily for myself I’m a pretty good skater so uh you know definitely the system is a little bit of shock to the system when you first start playing it but you know it’s a hectic system in a sense you know it’s hard for you know offensive teams to you know get that breathing room that separation that they need to you know make special plays so you know it’s an easy system it’s cut and dry in the sense you know it sounds pretty idiot proof in the sense you could just you know stay on your man and go wherever he goes but you know obviously it’s it’s a little grueling on the engine but you know it’s just a system you know I I believe I can play and um I enjoy playing Jane gosp joining us here on the heaster Automotive all um I’m excited Graham about what I think that he potentially can bring to the team in terms of he could potentially be a power play option and something that he had mentioned with Rob bore and I think when he came to Carolina via trade a couple of seasons ago like towards the tail end of the 2022 2023 season right at the trade deadline when they got him from Arizona he had to assimilate himself into the team like there was already an establish team they already had a a well oiled machine I guess you could say and he had to kind of find his way in that in the middle of all of it which is not an easy thing to do especially when you’re trying to figure out what your how your strengths and your style playing what you do fits into what the team already is doing and the skill set of the guys around you it’s not an easy thing to do in the middle of the year and I think it’s going to be advantageous for him all right he has an understanding already of what the Carolina hurricane system is like he mentioned you know obviously knowing the knowing the system Rob bore runs having familiarity with Jaylen Chatfield having being paired alongside him knowing guys on the team and so on so forth that’s a that’s a very important thing coming in having that knowledge already already having somewhat of a familiarity so he knows coming in Graham what is expected of him what he should expect from the team as well and I think that’s going to be advantageous for him I think this upcoming season I think we’re going to see a better version of Shane gosis bear than what we saw in Carolina a couple years ago when he was picked up at the trade deadline a new and improved version of Shane gosis bear is some of them sure lots of hurricanes fans would hope for but going back to the familiarity it’s like anything in sports when you’re a college basketball player and you transfer to a team that sort of has an uptempo move the ball up the court in transition style offense or in football and you trans when you transfer to a no huddle offense or triple option offense it just takes time to get familiar with it and lucky for luckily for Shane gopar even though he did play in the back half of that 2022 2023 season you’re right it took some time to get adjusted it took some time to get Acquired and at that point with the roster the Carolina Hurricanes had you maybe didn’t even really require too much of Shane gosip spare but he definitely has a lot more on his uh on his plate as far as expectations on the power play unit playing alongside of that defensive unit with guys like Brent Burns who as you mentioned earlier is up in age Jacob slaven not much of a scorer he’s more of a passer kind of guy so it’ll be good to see what Shane gosp can do in his second in his second uh second time around with the Hurricanes I’m excited for it I think it’s a good replacement again he had 56 points last year in Detroit 56 it’s a lot of production from your blue line 10 goals 46 assists I think he’s going to be a little bit more productive and more consistent than what we saw him when he was again with Carolina a few seasons ago when they picked him up the trade deadline five Jordan martinook just resigned with the Carolina Hurricanes for three more seasons spent the last six years in a cane sweater spoke to the media earlier today and he talked about how important it was for the canes and martinook to get a deal done yeah I think when it when it came down to it it was um I I I didn’t want to leave and if there was a chance to stay I was going to do everything I can to stay so um it presented itself kind of towards the end that it it was going to be an opportunity and I I’m thrilled to be back um it’s it’s hard to think about leaving a place that you’re so comfortable and love so much so I’m very happy to be back he actually talked about how he was entertaining other offers and even said there were some some concern that he might not be a hurricane yeah um up until kind of the last day of free agency we were prepared to go somewhere else so um I gotta give uh give my wife a lot of credit and a couple pats on the back and maybe a stiff drink because uh the last week uh kind of put her through the ringer um with with everything that’s gone on and um I’m just happy that she’s uh she’s been supportive and my family everybody’s been supportive and um it’s good to good good to be back in in a place that we’ve laid down a a nice nice home there’s a lot of uncertainty for for guys and for athletes during free agency time or leading up to free agency because for a guy like Jordan martinook who’s been here for the last six years he’s made Raleigh is home and he obviously as he said he wanted to stay here he said it at his exit interview right after the Carolina hurricane season ended back you know 6 weeks ago whatever it was he said I I want to stay here I want to be here this is where I want to be and not knowing if that was going to be reciprocated in terms of am I going to get a fair offer am I even going to get an offer and then as he said Sunday night just before free agency or that evening hey this this is a contract offer from the Carolina Hurricanes we want you back and he’s like yep got it done signed but he had to think about all right if that doesn’t happen what’s next what’s the other options out there for me what’s best for my family not just for my career what’s best for my family he’s he he acknowledged during I know Graham you were part of the uh the zoom interview that he had earlier today as as was I he said you know I’m at I’m at the tail end of my career here I’m I want to make sure I’m in a place where I can win a cup yeah I want to make sure I’m a place where I can win a cup and he’s like I want to do it here in Carolina said he’s feel he said said he feels like this team is right there in the tail of chasing the Stanley Cup and also talked about you know the locker room guy he said that’s not a title that he put on himself he feels like he’ll just assume he’s a locker room guy because he’s always yelling at Andre fov but I know also in a fun way by the way in a fun way yeah not in not in a valent way how could you ever hate Andre speet off but I know he also talked about he was asked the question does it feel like himself and Jacob slaven have more of a responsibility as being one of the veteran players coming back or that got extensions and he said no because the value in the core of this team hasn’t changed the goal is to still win a Stanley Cup it shouldn’t matter who’s here and it’s not like the guys that we brought in as you kind of alluded to earlier in the show they didn’t bring these guys in to boost their profit to up their value they brought these guys in and these guys want to come play in Raleigh for Rod brymore because they feel like they can win a Stanley Cup with this organization that’s number five let’s get to number four we are the four Hors uh number four Fourth of July we made it folks we made it to the 4th of July we made it there um first of all hope everyone has a fun time but B everyone stay safe I really hope that uh Graham I actually remember this was back in 2014 so this is 10 years ago all right the for those who don’t know I played the cross through college coach College across for N9 years and back in 2014 I was part of like a like a team or a squad that was out in Denver actually around this time 10 years ago Fourth of July and the world lacrosse championships were taking place in Denver okay and I was part of a group that was helping out with the world games uh in a few different ways like we were kind of like a practice squad for for teams that for when they’re practicing and getting ready for games and and matches that if they wanted to kind of use us as extra bodies for their practices because countries were only maybe allowed to have like 23 24 guys on a roster so you can only travel so many and bring so many guys over so if you would to have extra bodies for practice you needed guys there so I was kind of a group of like 20 or 25 guys that were being like a practice squad for teams and so on and so forth and at the time the the Denver Outlaws at the time known as in made maor League lacrosse the pro lacrosse league at the time the owners of the the Denver Outlaws at the time were the same owners as the Denver Broncos so they would play their games at Mile High Stadium okay and on the fourth of July they always had a Fourth of July game because after the game they would have this massive fireworks show like where they’re shooting fireworks from the top of the stadium and all that kind of stuff it was super cool and I remember we had met some guys from the Swiss uh Swiss lacrosse team that was that were there and we actually had my the team I was with we had a couple of big you know like 15 passenger you know Vans and they had tickets to that lacrosse game because it was before the world lacrosse championship started so they asked us like hey can we hitch a ride to the game with you guys because you know this is 2014 this is before Uber and those kinds of things and getting them from out of out of the country um and they spoke like six languages but nonetheless um they said that hey can we ride with you guys like yeah sure as long as you’re with the van with us after the game that’s fine you can you can ride with us totally cool so we had like Swiss guys in our van with us R to this game knowing that there’s going to be this big Fourth of July thing going on they’re like so what’s the significance of this Fourth of July like why is everyone so excited about it so we explained you know like this you know the history and things like that a little bit with them they’re like so what do you guys do like well basically we like to eat a lot lot of food it it blows stuff up in the sense of like fireworks and everything they’re like okay like all right we’ll see what it’s all about so after the game they had like was like a 30 plus minute firework show they’re playing all like you know like the USA music and all that all that kind of stuff and it was all synced up too with the music which was really really cool we get back in the van the Swiss guys were like okay I get it I get it and we actually uh the the group that I was with um we actually got to stay in the dorms at the University of Denver that’s where all the teams were staying uh at the University of Denver and we would help uh teams like you know making sure they got to the right buses for shuttling to their games and so on and so forth and we actually were in the dining hall on the fourth of July that morning and we’re all saying happy Fourth of July and stuff to each other happy Fourth of July and we looked like down the dining hall like like four or five tables down England’s national team was there we’re like hey guys happy birthday America yeah they’re like one of the guys actually said we get it you won just like kind of break the ice a little bit it was actually a lot of fun so happy Fourth of July out there to everybody let’s go ahead and get to number three one two three so things that made college basketball in this area so much fun was because we had State Duke and Carolina all make it to the Sweet 16 now UNCC lost in the sweet 16 Duke and NC State played each other in the Elite 8 and Alo Bott actually talked about when the Elite 8 actually came around when Duke and NC State were playing each other he was cheering for Duke yeah no I can’t stand in NC State bro it’s something about they just bro you know how sick I would have been if they won it this year oh my gosh I wanted Duke to win I wanted Duke to go to the final four I didn’t want NC State to go to the final four cuz like Duke going to the final four like I knew they I knew like they were good enough they were good enough and like Duke maybe if they beat produ fine they won’t be in Yukon and it’s like yeah that would like it’ll be like remember that Duke for maybe two to three years and then after that like they didn’t win it all so like but like NC State like they never going to let this go there’s clearly some level of disdain towards NC State from Armando Bott and that’s okay I have no problem with players holding grudges towards other teams or dislike or anything like that now here’s what I will say with Bott he actually did give DJ Burns some credit but like NC State like they never going to let this go they beat us in the championship then they beat Duke in the um be Duke in the Lea and I blame Duke too cuz Duke shouldn’t have lost him in the ACC tournament that’s where it all start what they doing I don’t know and then like you know how it Go in March when the team get hot example let’s say Paxon Paxton wjuk okay said that he was cheering for Duke he would not be allowed back if Chapel Hill maybe so I kind of accept well maybe because he had that great game against Michigan State in the NCAA tournament I’m not gonna think I’m not going to throw another Carolina basketball player into the bus anyways just point being I respect amondo Bott for admitting that he was cheering for his fan base’s most hated team in the NCA tournament and he still gave DJ burns his flowers now going off to your previous point we going to play devil’s advocate for both sides here okay one you’re right n State fans should not let North Carolina fans hear the end of this because they helped them get to their first final four appearance since 1983 now for Carolina fans you kind of created this monster with NC State fans right because you’re constantly reminding them that they haven’t won a national championship since 1983 that’s true they don’t have they haven’t won an ACC uh championship in over 35 years so yeah Amano bacock Carolina fans like when you create this monster when you go with the whole little brother mentality it’s it’s going to come back to bite you in the you know what eventually and this will be the season it does until NC St and Carolina play each other in pnt Arena for the first Mee in basketball you’re gonna have to hear about it don’t forget about football either that’s just kind of how it works all right uh real quick actually go let’s go next up number two two so a couple news and notes Here in the NBA world that actually do have local ties Nate McMillan who’s from Raleigh played at NC State in the mid 80s under Jim valano head coach in the NBA for several years including most recently just uh with the Atlanta Hawks actually took that took the Atlanta Hawks to an Eastern Conference Final just recently as a few years ago hired by JJ reck to be on the staff with the LA Lakers I think this is vitally important for JJ reick as a head coach and a new head coach and by new head coach I mean like fresh because he’s never coached anything outside of like youth AA basketball and that’s that’s legit never was a college assistant never a college head coach never an NBA assistant first time ever head coach so a lot for him to learn learn having a guy on his staff like Nate McMillan who has experien with several franchises in the NBA has been a head coach and an assistant coach but has also had some level of play playoff success in recent Seasons again just recently as a few years ago got to the Easter Conference Finals with the Atlanta Hawks having a guy like that on your staff to lean on I think is important for a guy like JJ reick it’s like hey he could pull JJ aside and say hey look either don’t do this or do that like here’s not just in terms of x’s and o’s I mean JJ reic I think we all understand is knows the game of basketball very well but it’s how you manage the people how you manage practices how you manage your staff how you how you manage the stuff off the court I think that’s things like that I think are are are vital or even just things like hey man time to call a timeout it’s time to call a timeout you know or whatever it might be or like you know what like don’t push guys so much or whatever it is little intricacies like that I think are going to be vital for JJ reck as a head coach and having someone like Nate McMillan on his staff is going to be important for him also another local here thing here kmo Walker who officially announced his retirement from the NBA actually yesterday has been hired to be part of the coaching staff with the Charlotte Hornets oh wow he was uh hired to be the the player enhancement coach for the Charlotte Hornets okay I don’t know exactly 100% what that means I mean I’ve heard the word enhancement before regarding Sports I hope yeah well hopefully not enhancement could also be used for some other things gr but you might be too young to understand those things but nonetheless kemell Walker is going to be going back with the Charlotte Hornets to be part of their staff again player enhancement I don’t know what specifically that role is maybe that is um how things are handled off the court for players in terms of lock room facilities and and and so forth we actually see this across a lot of sports there there are guys on staff or people on staff with teams to make sure that how are things in the locker room in terms of setup in the locker room equipment those other small things that go into the everyday life of a pro athlete that to make sure that things are right for them to to make sure that off the court off the field everything is operating at 100% so they can be their best one actually does come to practice and come to games so making sure that travel arrangements and things like that are all important but also player enhancement could also be along the lines of just individual skill development while at practice maybe it doesn’t have a much of a in-game role or ingame voice but when it comes to practice maybe it’s individual one-on-one work or one-on-one film sessions with players things like that so that might be what his role is again player enhancement coach for the Hornets but a guy with a ton of NBA experience he’s 34 years old just retired from the NBA I know he didn’t play with anyone this past season but a guy who’s been in this league understands everything that it takes to be successful in the NBA I think this is a big thing for the Charlotte Hornets especially when you got young players like lamelo ball when you have young players like Brandon Miller Mark Williams I think this is thing for the Charlotte Hornets gram well also some older players too I mean when you talk about some of the monitoring off the court stuff the activities I think of one player that comes to mind that could use some help with that and I’m being in all seriousness when I say this as I just lo as I I had it and then you lost it G I lost it hey you know what sometimes that happens gram sometimes you think you have it and you lose it it just oh okay there you go miles Bridges oh we’re talking about miles okay gotcha yeah in all seriousness somebody like him could use some help as far as as having a veteran NBA player to kind of not be a not play so much a role model role but a leadership role gensel Stephan n Tavo terrain to name a few and as a way to help supplement and replace a lot of the goal scoring that’s lost Carolina both regular season and postseason goal scoring production have lost about 29% of their goal scoring production from last year guys that have left via free agency I suggested that maybe maybe that the Carolina Hurricanes as a way to help supplement that to add to the roster could sign Vladimir tereno someone that has been linked to the Carolina Hurricanes in the past well that’s not going to happen because guess what gram uhoh Vladimir tereno signed a 2-year deal with the Detroit Red wings for $4.75 million per year ah so there is still some hockey moves going on out there it just happened today it was announced 20 minutes ago so that option’s off the table Graham that option’s off the table so now if you’re Carolina if now was tereno on the radar seriously this year I don’t know but he was someone that was on their radar in recent Seasons so I definitely joking and AOC no cal cal got Cal got Larry Fedor fired yeah in 2018 it was it wasn’t the other eight losses That season I’m sure it wasn’t just that no it was Cal they set the tone for the rest of that season by defeating them out in Berkeley and also pror to the previous season 2017 with the loss in Chapel Hill so it was Cal’s doing not NC State definitely set the tone all right with for July coming up tomorrow a staple for a lot of people when it comes to grilling Out Burgers hot dogs right hot dogs well Graham you pulled this out earlier today about proper hot dog etiquette [Music] everyone loves hot dogs but not everyone follows proper etiquette when they enjoy this sacred All-American food so here are some dos and don’ts to prevent you from making a Frank faux PA don’t use fancy buns with Franks this is considered go do stick to sesame seed poppy seed or plain buns with hot dogs don’t serve hot dogs on fancy China always use a paper plate our everyday dishes dress the dog not a bun wet condiments like mustard and chili are applied first followed by chunky condiments like relish onions and sauerkraut followed by shredded cheese followed by spices like celery salt or pepper don’t put herbs on the same plate as a hot dog that’s just well Frank tentious don’t bring wine to a hot dog barbecue beer soap Oda lemonade and iced tea are preferable don’t ever use utensils to eat a hot dog on a bun eat them only with your hands don’t take more than five bites to finish a hot dog for a foot long weener seven bites are acceptable a few other tips to maximize your hot dog eating experience don’t leave bits of bun on your plate eat it all and perhaps the cardinal rule never never ever put ketchup on a hot dog after the age of 18 we all have to grow up sometime and besides Legend has it that within the city limits of Chicago you could be arrested for such an [Music] offense okay a few different things to break down in there first of all about the bun just a plain Bun’s just fine I’ve never done a poppy SE bun for a hot dog Chicago I mean it’s very big up there I mean good for them um in terms of the actual when you apply Like the quote unquote wet condiments to the hot dog they said don’t put it on the bun put it directly on the hot dog itself I actually am okay with putting the condiments directly on the bun them putting the hot dog in because then like it wraps around the hot dog personally but a big point of contention I have there was the uh don’t put ketchup on a hot dog some people agree with that some people say you should not put a ketchup on a hot dog and as as the woman uh Jan Queen of the wian the queen said uh if you’re above the age of 18 be a grown-up don’t put a ketchup on your hot dog I’m okay with not growing up I’ll put ketchup on my hot dog and I have no problem with it I actually put ketchup and mustard on my hot dog there you go and sometimes if I have just mustard I go with just mustard if I have just ketchup I go with just ketchup that’s fine I you know what here’s the thing if you want to put mustard and chili and onions and cheese on your hot dog go for it I’ve done that that before and it’s good I have no I have no problem with that but I don’t I don’t get the hate towards ketchup on hot dogs I don’t understand it Graham look I get I really don’t understand it it’s kind of the same thing about a good steak doesn’t require steak sauce but I feel like Fourth of July ketchup is accept is acceptable just because it’s the color red just the reason why we’re going we’re just celebrating the country’s colors well there’s that too by the way uh the hot dog eating contest that’s always on the 4th of July the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest no Joey Chestnut because the the like the deal that he signed I think was with impossible foods which promotes you know vegan meats and you know those kinds of things so Nathan said nope can’t compete so no Joey Chestnut go ahead and put that asteris beside whomever wins tomorrow and you know what that kind of takes the fun away because Joey chest’s been been the staple and like the No Name it’s like all right can he can a can someone beat him but B can he top what he did last year but no Joey test the hot dog eating contest bummer where here’s what he needs to do instead he just needs to go sign another deal with another hot dog company start a is impossible Foods all right well now it’s time for impossible food to do their very own for the July hot dog eating contest we can have a fullon WWF versus WCW Hot Dog Eating competition Monday
