Keith Smith reporting on potential 5 team trade including Mavs/GSW/Detroit which saves the THJ TPE

I’m really not sure if there’s any actual reporting here? I’ve not seen anyone talking about rolling these trades into a 5 teamer, but if I’m understanding Keith’s tweet, do we still get to keep the TPE?

  1. Possibly. It’s complicated. If Green’s outgoing is big enough to take Klay’s new contract in, then yes.

Edit: Yeah, that works. Green’s salary is 12.6M, Klay’s 16.6M. Mavs are under the 1st apron (have to be, they are hardcapped there) and the rule is outgoing+7.5M. So yes, looks like Mavs are keeping their THJ TPE. However, how and when they could use it is another question because hard cap. Maybe in ~361 days time when the new cap year starts?

  2. Holy crap, I’m impressed that we’ve got all these mad geniuses working overtime to squeeze every ounce of value out of these transactions.

All the mathletes be like: real contenders are built in the spreadsheet!

EDIT: I’m only half joking. Given the structure of the CBA, you really need mastery of the twists and turns, and dedication to maximizing flexibility, to succeed in the future. Orgs that don’t do this will fall behind pretty damn quick.

  3. Does this mean there’s 8ish million to spend on a player instead of 4? That would be significant

  4. I read this as Kevin smith at first and almost commented snootchie bootchies bitches

  5. You mean we have a FO that looks beyond… this season? What a turn of events the past couple of years have been
