Cannon Fodder EP 3: Blue Jackets Bolster Roster With Sean Monahan and Jack Johnson Signings! πŸ’πŸš¨

free agent frenzy is in full swing in the National Hockey League and let’s take a look at the moves that the Blue Jackets have made roll ity let me your secet I’m picking up pieces I need you to let me know how did you [Music] hello everyone welcome back to the Canon F show I am Corey costic your host this is the costic fan so free agency in the NHL has been uh underway this week and a lot of moves have been getting made like players just going left and right there’s just a lot of chaos happening in the National Hockey League and especially on the Columbus Blue Jackets where um you’ve brought in Dom wadell to go and make tough decisions and he has been making those tough decisions so first and foremost um I want to start with the departures um players that left and wound up going into free agency while uh uh while this process has taken place first and foremost uh Jake Bean has Departed the team he became an unrestricted free agent after we didn’t offer him a qualifying deal he wound up going to the Calgary Flames Nick blankenberg this is the one that I was actually surprised about because Nick blankenberg has a ton of upside um he just can’t stay healthy um but if he can stay healthy I think Nashville has gotten themselves quite the player if uh if he does stay healthy we’ll we’ll have to see he’s a small player he’s undersized but he stays healthy the Nashville got themselves a gem Carson Meyer uh the former Ohio State Buckeye hockey player has left the team as well he has gone uh to a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks Brendan gon has left the team he spent a lot of time with the Cleveland monsters and our um AHL affiliate he is actually on a two-way deal with the Minnesota Wild now that’s fine uh I liked Brendan gon he was a hard worker but he he’s nothing more to me than a minor league player Josh Dunn um he left the team he was another monsters player he wound up going to Buffalo for $1.5 million uh Bill Sweezy the defenser defenseman went to the Boston Bruins I think he’s just going to go to uh I think Providence is where their minor league team is so yeah um we did extend qualifying offers to Jake Christensen jet Greaves Kent Johnson which is good Carill marchenko which is really good and Cole singer also good in my opinion additionally we bought out Adam boquist contract um I’m not mad about this I don’t like the way that boquist and bean played um yeah I I think they could have done significantly better um than they did in their time in Columbus I I just I’m trying to be nice with this but I just struggling with that right now um so let’s move on to the signings now so um we have Dylan Gambrell he was a player for the Ottawa Senators um and he played for Toronto I think he played for the maple leafes affiliate the Toronto Marley’s um fine you know you need depth players you need players to fill out gaps uh especially in the minor league system uh we brought in defenseman Cole Clayton and Owen singer uh the they’ve played with Cleveland for the last few seasons and I think they will just stay there um this is the first like really interesting one though is we brought back Jack Johnson now Jack Johnson played in Columbus for roughly Five Seasons and in that time he was really successful he was a well-liked player you know when we started making it to the playoffs uh relatively consistent consistently in the mid-2010s um Jack Johnson was a big part of those teams and then abruptly just left in free agency and went to Pittsburgh and said he wanted to be a part of a winning culture now at the time considering where the jackets were and they seemed to be on the rise a lot of us took exception to that statement because it’s just like what do you mean we’ve been doing great lately you know we’re making the playoffs consistently we’ve been competitive we were competing for a division title in one of those years we just ran into a buzzsaw with the Penguins and the capitals uh in our division and you know we were consistently getting paired up with the team that would go on to the Stanley Cup finals so you know it it really struck a lot of us the wrong way uh he went to Pittsburgh then he went to Colorado then to Chicago then back to Colorado where he actually won the Stanley Cup um which congratulations to Jack Johnson on that and uh now he’s left Colorado and what seems to be in the final year of his career if not the second to last year it could be like an Andrew McCutchen situation like with the Pittsburgh Pirates um but he signed a veteran minimum contract uh700 $775,000 for one season now his family does live in Columbus so according to him this is where he wants to raise his family and I think the Blue Jackets have brought him back because I think he can teach a lot of the young guys some tricks he is being used as a depth defenseman um so I think he’s there to teach like matechuk and the year check the young Defenders that we have coming up through the pipeline who are going to get NHL time um he’s there to teach them how to be professionals and how to play this game in the big leagues but the big signing that we made in this is very clearly Shawn Monahan Shawn Monahan spent time in Calgary um he’s spent time in winipeg he actually was a teammate of Johnny Gad and this is what where I know for a fact that this is why they brought him in they brought him in to be our Topline center with Johnny gdo on the wing they have to have they they need someone that can mesh well with gdo um the biggest hindrance to our game since we’ve gotten Johnny gdo is that we have had no one to work with him um cdro is a distributor his skill set is that he is going to bring assists to players well no one’s scoring on this team last year we weren’t good we were a bad hockey team and so you had local media figures criticizing him it’s like I thought Johnny was supposed to be the guy well no you just don’t understand the game idiots but you know the the thing is that hockey is a very much a team sport you’re not going to succeed without others you know Mario Lemieux did not succeed by himself in Pittsburgh Wayne Gretzky did not succeed by himself in Edmonton you and I am not saying that Johnny gdo is Wayne gresy or Mari Lemieux but the point is that even the best had to have talent around them to succeed so Sean Monahan comes in on a 5x five essentially so five years 5 a half million per season look he’s going to be our Topline Center um he is there to teach Adam fanelli uh vov and um he’s he’s there to teach our young guys we have a lot of young players in the pipeline on this team but you need good veterans to teach them you need good coaching to teach teach them this is what Dom wadell was brought in to do to revamp this organization and I think he is well on his way to doing that but tell me your thoughts who would you like to see the jackets make a run for the rest of the way I am Corey costic like comment subscribe thank you so much for watching see you [Music] n [Music]
