I told you guys in my most recent lari video that we would have a video breaking down Klay Thompson leaving the Warriors for the Mavericks so you guys know that I just had to keep my word funny story I actually tried to upload a clay video a few days ago but I had to take that one down because of all of this news coming out so fast and him ultimately Landing in Dallas in this video I talked about the Mavericks being in the lead for Klay Thompson but also how LeBron James and the Lakers were trying to do everything that they could to slide in and steal him away reportedly LeBron James Wanted Klay Thompson so bad that he had called him right when NBA free agency opened not only did LeBron James call Klay Thompson but reportedly he was also willing to sacrifice to make this pairing happen WJ said this prior to Klay Thompson being expected to join the Mavericks there’s a sense that LeBron James really starts to take this year to year but what he’s telling the Lakers is if they can find an impact player at the mid-level exception of about $13 million whether that’s Klay Thompson uh James Harden uh Jonas valent chunis maybe a couple of others because this is not a star Laden free agency class he will take less on his contract to allow the Lakers to add that exception into their payroll James Harden resigned with the Clippers Jonas valent chunis signed with the Wizards and as we know Klay Thompson is in route to Dallas fortunately for the Lakers there’s still a lot of talent that is available on the market and fortunately for the Mavericks they have yet again got their guy but don’t feel too bad about missing out on Kay Lakers fans because according to Ramona shelburn there’s really not much that the team could have done reportedly Klay Thompson wanted a fresh start because he felt that playing for the Lakers would be too similar to playing for the Warriors H I wonder what he meant by that anyways guys we have to talk about what Klay Thompson joining Luca donic defensive effort but while everybody was engulfed with the shortcomings of the Mavericks defense Luca would say that the team’s true problem wasn’t their defense at all in his opinion it was their offense to be more clear here’s the quote that I’m referencing from LCA donic our defense has not been bad we just can’t really score that’s our main problem right now I think we’re getting some great looks and like I said we have confidence everybody can make a shot that shooting the ball on our team so we just got to keep believing without a doubt the Maverick’s defense could have been better but at the same time it’s hard to disagree with the point that Luca made about the team’s offense being a problem when this team shot 40% on wide open twos and 31.1% on wideopen threes for the series and when I say wide open I’m talking about there not being a Defender within 6 feet of the person taking the shot I’m talking about shots that you and me could knock down now the two-o percentage Rises to 48.9% with the closest Defender being 4 to6 feet from the player ticking the shot but the three-point percentage Falls even more going down to 28.7% despite finishing second and defensive rating during the regular season only trailing the Timberwolves in my opinion the Celtics were the League’s best best defense it’s always going to be awfully hard to beat the League’s best defense if you can’t even hit shots when nobody is in with guarding distance of you here’s a reminder that I think that some people need because of that o of 10 stinker in the playing tournament but Klay Thompson isn’t just one of the best Shooters in the game right now he’s one of the best shooters that the game has ever seen and even in a down year he was better than the Maverick’s third leading scorer who got traded along with three second round picks to the Pistons the player that I’m referencing here is Tim Hardaway Jr this man averaged 14.4 points as he shot only 40.2% from the field and 35.3% from three and if we just include what he did after the All-Star break those numbers start to look a whole lot worse this is not hyperbole after the All-Star break he would average 8.9 points shooting just 36.2% from the field and 31.8% from Deep like I said in my Klay Thompson video that I had to take down and what was a down year for clay he would still average 17.9 points shooting 43.2% from the field and 38.7% from three on nine attempts a game it blows my mind that this ended up being the Maverick’s third leading score for the duration of the regular season I can’t emphasize how badly that the Mavericks needed a Klay Thompson and they got him and ion ionically they got him for less money than he would have made had he not got offended and accepted the offer that the Lakers had for him last off seon last off season the Warriors offered Klay Thompson a 2-year $48 million extension that he turned down only for the Mavericks to intend to sign Klay to a three-year $50 million deal this off season apparently there were multiple offers on the table for clay with one of those being a 4-year one from the Lakers but instead of taking any of those offers clay would eye the opportunity and and no state taxes in Dallas in route to taking less money with his eyes set on his fifth Championship as long as clay remains locked in I absolutely don’t see why he couldn’t get another ring if klay’s time in Dallas is anything like Kyrie’s then Klay will fall in love with the franchise which he isn’t off to too bad of a start word has it that clay loved the idea of playing for the Mavericks so much that when he came to a dinner meeting with the Mavs front office he had already studied tape of the team and L out how he could help them the first thing that popped into my head when thinking about how Klay could help the Mavericks was his Infamous 60-point game where he only took 11 dribbles since returning from injury there have been a lot of times in Golden state where clay was just out of his element forcing the issue trying to create his own shot I think part of it was him trying to prove the haters wrong and part of it was that he knew that the Warriors needed another go-to scorer next to Steph regardless Klay Thompson is now headed to a team that will have Luca donic and Kyrie Irving two of the greatest offensive talents that the game has ever seen to be an impactful Maverick all this guy is going to have to do is space the floor and knock down open shots something that he’s shown us that he’s more than capable of doing time and time again LCA donic averaged the second most assist per game last season averaging 9.8 and had the fourth most three-point assist assisting on 264 three-point shots I am fully expecting that number to grow this season with an already devastating offense becoming even more solid it’s going to be a lot of fun seeing clay pull Defenders away from Luca and Kyrie it should also be fun to see how creative that the Mavericks get with him on offense now clay at this stage of his career isn’t the lock down all defensive team Defender that he once was but his defensive demise has been greatly exaggerated he’s not Elite but he’s also not a cone he’s perfectly capable of staying in front of Wings on the perimeter guys shout out to Nico Harrison because since arriving in Dallas and taking over as this team’s president of basketball operations this man has been Strictly Business he’s done a great job adding valuable talent for a low price this formula has paid dividends as this off season alone he would add Klay Thompson Quinton Grimes and Naji Marshall Naji Marshall is a signing that I actually called early in the off season Once I saw that the Mavericks were looking to add a forward who can score score defend and playmake Nai is 68 does all of those things at a good level and is now a 38.7% three-point shooter something that is very impressive considering how good of a pure slasher that he was coming into the league
