  1. No surprise here. It’s really just Othmann and Perrault at this point that are going to definitely be NHLers, how good they’ll be is yet to be determined.

Decent odds on Emery to pan out, Fortescue a little less so, but they’re not really in the picture at the moment.

Garand maybe has some potential in net, and perhaps Berrard gets a crack, but he’s really up against it.

  2. I mean, I’m not saying our pool is fantastic or anything, but this list is saying it’s worse than the islanders which is laughable.

  3. It’s expected when you are one of the better teams in the league. A couple of years ago our prospect pool was one of the best and now some of them are in the NHL.

  4. This. This right here is why I criticize Drury for his will nilly dealing of draft picks as if they have no value. The bill will come due eventually and he better have a cup to pay for it.

  5. FWIW this model is based off NHLe, which looks at scoring (and only scoring, I think) in different leagues and translates point values to NHL points. It’s interesting to see, but it’s probably one of the least useful ways to look at prospects. Someone like Emery, who seems like he could be a very reliable 4/5 shut-down defenseman, looks like a complete bust by NHLe because he didn’t put up points.

I don’t think we have a great pool by any means, but we’re probably a bit underrated here.

  6. This guy’s ranking system is entirely off of points. So imagine if EJ Emery was a 7th round draft prospect. Points are useful but there’s way more to a prospect than that

  7. We’ve been a good team for a few years (meaning lower picks), traded some draft stock in rentals, and still have a fairly young team (how many teams would kill to add Cuylle, for example).

Being ranked low isn’t a surprise. We might even run out of spots for the kids to take. We’re short a D or two in the pipeline, but other than that, we’re in a good spot despite a poor ranking here.

  8. It’s almost like trading 5 years of top picks in an effort to find band aids for the Buch trade would end up as a disaster for our prospect pool

Now entering our 4th year after the trade, we still have no solution and just made ANOTHER trade for another band aid.

    Chris Drury ladies and gents.

Just ONE microcosm of Drury. We ended up giving the Blues Buch AND a first rounder for 2 months of Tarasenko and Mikkola and a 2nd rounder.

    Yay?

  9. If you recall they had the best for a while and most of them busted so ill take a good team over good prospects any day. Problem is drury trades draft picks and gets only rentals or to dump contracts. His asset management has been about as bad as you can possibly be.

  10. Not surprising. Drury has traded some 10 picks in 3 years in an attempt to find a RW for Zibanejad and Kreider after he traded away Buch.

They also don’t have a second round pick until 2028, so the prospect pool will probably stay shallow until they decide to rebuild.

  11. Could have saved time by sorting on ‘last three year draft positions’

  12. We’re definitely not this low in reality, but this is yet another proxy to view how poorly Drury has managed assets over the last few years

  13. His follow up:

    > 29. New York Rangers

    > Top 5 Skater Prospects: Emery, Perreault, Othmann, Cuylle and Jones

    > The Rangers system doesn’t have much to it currently. Emery, their 2024 pick, profiles as a shutdown dman with little to no offense (those never profile well in my model but many are very high on him). Perreault I really like and could end up being one final star for the Rangers in this contention window.

Given how many picks we have traded away I think this is more than fair. Wheeler from the Athletic ranks Gabe as the 7th best prospect overall and he will be a star. Wheeler ranked Othmann 44th best prospect and projects as a 2nd liner. Still early for Emery in rankings but he sounds like a zero offense 4th D shut down which I’m fine with.

After those 3 we truly do not have much to be excited about. I know people love Berard but he caps as a 3rd liner likely 4th. Personally I won’t be getting overly excited about bottom 6 guys but he looks to be a good player for us eventually.

    Im fine with this ranking.

  14. This is what happens when you rush through a rebuild and senselessly trade away assets.

  15. Not surprising.

The Rangers have been a good team for a few years now. We’ve traded picks and some of the top prospects a few years ago are up and have graduated. It’s rare to be a contender and have a top five pipeline.

  16. The best Rangers draft pick of the last idk 20 maybe 30 years? Has been Chris Krieder. Isn’t that something

  17. We really need centers. I don’t think we have a single one who is likely to be NHL caliber in the pipeline.

  18. They’re probably underrating Perrault a touch but the system is really

    A- Perrault

    B- Othmann

    C- Emery, Sykora, Berard

    D- everyone else

Trading your first and second round picks every year catches up to you after a while. They pretty much need Perrault to hit.

  19. 3 years in a row of playoffs, having traded 2 1st round picks and 4 2nd round picks in that span as well.

It’s maddening that the whole thing was B**h*****h was traded for cap and to give the kids T6 playing time and than Gallant just didn’t play Laf on RW in the T6. So every year we’ve had to shop for a T6 RW since.

  20. Canes seem to be the outlier, most playoff teams in bottom half or worse. This is also highly subjective projections based on draft status.
