Carolina Panthers’ three areas of growing pains this season

Carolina Panthers’ three areas of growing pains this season

let’s move the chains time for football at 4 it is football at 4 here on the drive with Tim Donnelly Dennis Cox sitting in for Tim this afternoon thanks so much for joining us here on the day after the Fourth of July Fourth of July weekend thanks for tuning in and football at 4: talking little Carolina Panthers I got to bring in Victoria V Neer oh hi producer of the Adam Gold show she’s going to join us here for a little football F4 today did you keep all of your uh fingers and everything after the I have all 10 digits and toes so I am all good I actually did not set off any fireworks I let others do that I’ve had my firor fun in the past yeah let others do it right now I’ll sit back watch oh I get it sit back and watch my fur boy Biff he’s not a fan of fireworks uh neither is my girlfriend’s dog he’s not a fan either it was a little bit of interest trying to get him to use the bathroom last night oh no yeah struggle but it’s what it is so struggle okay and that’s actually what we’re going to get into you hit you hit the key word so on Wednesday when I was sitting in for Tim during football 4 uh Victoria I talked about three areas where I think the Carolina hurricane I’m sorry Carolina Panthers as fans could be a little optimistic about the upcoming season revamped offense obviously with Dave Canalis coming in a lot of new additions at Personnel clearly on paper upgrades and then the second one was terms of like the rush defense Derrik brown with ason Robinson I think is going to be a stalwart oh yeah I think it’s going be very difficult for teams to run on yeah and also just the new culture that Dave Canalis and Dan Morgan are putting together you have to be optimistic about not just the shortterm but the long term of that at least the idea of it right in terms of what we’ve been seeing yeah so now I kind of thought about all right well what about in relation to those three things what are maybe some three areas of growing pains for the Carolina Panthers there’s a lot of grow this coming Seas there’s going to be several and you know what that’s okay yeah because progress this grow you can’t have progress without pain and that’s what we need is progress we need some progress so talk about that revamped offense that revamped offense easy for me to say with all those new moving parts Victoria it’s going to take some time for this group to jail yeah because you have two new receivers in Deontay Johnson and Xavier liette Xavier liette being a rookie himself and also Jonathan Mingo is just a seconde player himself the only one that’s really established right now at least with this team ad tight end Davian Sanders brand new rookie Jonathan Brooks brand new rookie still recovering from his ACL Dave Canalis only his second year ever as a play caller right like that’s something we got to keep in mind too yeah he’s been around the league for a long time but again second year as a play caller and first year with Bryce young in this system as well and it’s only his second year in the NFL obviously after the disaster that was last season it’s going to take time for things to click yeah I got to build that continuity none continuity consistency confidence however you want to describe it there’s a lot of different things that it’s going to take for this offense to really come together don’t be shocked if there are early season struggles and we’ll get into that here in just a little bit now the second thing where I talked about things to be optimistic about Dereck Brown’s a stud call it what it is the guy got paid for a reason and deservedly Soh I love the ason Robinson signing on the interior with them cuz I think teams are going to struggle running and and Davian Clowney is known for being effective against the run as well but the big question is where’s the pass rush going to come from it’s a good question it’s a big time question because okay Clowney he’s never hit more than nine and a half sacks in a season now again he can be effective in terms of generating quarterback pressures like we mentioned good against the Run getting into the back field quarterback huray all that stuff but actually getting the quarterback to the ground he’s never had more than nine and a half sacks in a season DJ wam who they signed to be opposite it of javian Clowny he’s coming off a pretty big injury like quad quadriceps injury that he’s still rehabbing he’s probably not going to be ready to go at the start of training camp and here’s always the concern it’s like okay you might eventually be healthy enough to play but are you fit to really perform yeah you got to be careful with those because those injuries can come back they can and it’s it’s one thing to train to get ready for a season it’s another to be rehabbing just to be healthy enough to go there’s a massive difference between the two and I think that’s a big concern for DJ wam is that how long is it really going to take him to get up to speed yeah again he might be healthy enough to play week one but how effective is he going to be as the season progresses how how fast are you going to wear down so there’s major questions and then out after that DJ Johnson secondy year guy right it’s Amari barno who’s I think recovering from an injury that he had the end of last season as well who is mostly a special teams player yeah lot of question marks Json who they signed this off season who has five sacks in four years and Granny who was a former first round pick but four years in the NFL he has five sacks MH there isn’t a whole lot there in terms of pass rush and then pass defense once you get past JC horn things get pretty thin I know they signed Dante Jackson yeah but that’s it and Lord let’s hope JC horn stays healthy too yeah I’m sorry Dante Johnson not Dante Jackson my apology on that there’s a lot of do hey there was the the whole Spider-Man meme thing is real with the Panthers there’s a whole lot of that so there are questions on the back end outside of again JC horn as well now I think there’s good thing with the entire defensive staff coming back because there’s continuity so like Xavier Woods can tell Jordan Fuller hey this is what we need to do this is what we’re looking for here JC horn has familiarity with the system those kinds of things it’s nice seeing sha Thompson come back I I know Josie Jes is going to be playing alongside them but they’re going to miss Frankie louu a ton big so yeah I think the rush defense it’s going to be difficult to run on the Panthers this year but where’s that pass rush really going to be coming from is a major concern and when I talked about earlier about the new culture for the Carolina Panthers under Dave Canalis and with Dan Morgan what they’re trying to establish Victoria this is Dave Canal’s first time as a head coach it’s on the job learning it’s not like hey for a rookie we can limit his snaps in terms of like all right we’re going to play 15 snaps really control the situations that you’re going to be in that way you’re not overloaded with too much Dave Canalis is first time head coach and he’s also going to be the offensive coordinator like he’s going to be the play caller at once that’s a lot for any head coach to take on there are established coaches in the NFL who don’t even do that Hardball in Baltimore is not a coordinator Tomlin and Pittsburgh not a coordinator now some guys are good at it Andy Reid in uh Kansas City obviously very good at it but again those guys are few and far between yeah and he’s so new he’s like the film on the phone that you’re pilling off like you wait exactly he’s like that new so there are a lot of things as I used to coach college lacrosse and I was an assistant for a few years becoming before I became a head coach and there were so many things that I had to learn as a head coach for the first time that I just did not fully grasp as an assistant I it’s just it’s a different world it’s a compl completely different world because Canalis yes he’s focusing on the offense but you still have to manage your entire team have to manage your entire staff if there’s someone on defense that’s struggling you know personally how are you going to take that guy in and being like all right how are you struggling off the field like how can we help you to make sure that you’re effective on the field whatever it is like you got to you got to make sure that your staff is all in a line cuz we saw that last year with Frank Reich Victoria that was not the case and we saw the disaster that it turned out to be hot mess hot steaming pile big hot steaming pile as hot as it is outside yes oh which is gross it’s real gross but nonetheless there are a lot of different things that Dave Canalis is going to have to learn on the Fly we’ve seen the positive and the energy uh with with him and press conferences and how he talks to guys on the field what if the offense is struggling we mentioned a moment ago it’s going to take some time for things to jail what if the offense is struggling you’re one and three yeah does that how does that message fly with your team how do you handle that with struggles cuz last year your only time as an offensive coordinator and a play caller your team made the playoffs Tampa Bay you made the playoffs and you won a playoff game so you’ve experienced success I’m on record Victoria saying this team is probably a five six win team which is still progress and that’s it is which is still progress and guess what they might be in a lot of close games they might lose some games 30 to 20 30 to 28 absolutely or 30 to 21 something along those lines but still close in it but not quite there because there’s still a lot of roster holes on this team yeah how does he handle struggle how does he handle failure at times it’s one thing to go in there and like well let’s go chew tape get on the Whiteboard practice Jew tape get on the Whiteboard all those different things how do you manage people yeah especially now that it all falls on you because you have to be a great manager of people because their success is your success but their failure is also your failure it’s one thing to be a position coach you can focus on a small group of guys when you’re the head coach it all falls on you I’m very curious to see how Mr optimistic Dave Canales is going to do when inevitable failures come because this team was the worst team in the league last year so they are and you know what it’s again it’s not going to turn over overnight it’s just not I mean I mean unless you’re going to do it I mean unless you’re going to win 10 games buy all me Let Go Canales let’s go but I am okay as long as the we see the culture and the team progress the way into a successful style of play and that that culture of expecting to win does not happen overnight just doesn’t no it just doesn’t you can’t microwave this thing I wish we could I really do wish we could
