Meet the Newest St. Louis Blues: Pierre-Olivier Joseph Scouting Report | 9

today I will be breaking down the latest Blues acquisition in their newest player as the newest episode of our scouting series we’ll be doing more episodes of this as are needed but so far this is the most Rec recent acquisition at the time of recording this video so if it is appreciated if you like subscribe share the video um all those things uh it really helps us out anyways so getting into the newest blues player for next season Pierre Olivier Joseph um he is the brother of the one we covered in last episode Matthew Joseph so they are playing together on the same team for the St Louis Blues here Olivier Joseph is a very young defenseman um who has some potential uh and hasn’t necessarily shown the ability to reach that yet but it is a very lowrisk move U and we’ll go into why right now so you signed a onee contract with the blues worth $950,000 so not even a uh not not something that you can’t be worried about moving off of um and not even a million dollars so really it is a massively low percentage of the cap and shouldn’t be anything the blues are worried about he is 25 years old so very young and a young 25 just turned it a few days ago actually uh and he is 6’2 and 185 pounds so okay size um so Pierre Olivier Joseph as I said is someone who had a lot of potential and just kind of petered out in the Penguins organization he was a first round pick uh selected 23rd overall by the coyotes actually in 2017 until he play until he made his way to the Penguins organization uh leading up to his draft here he had okay stats um in the qmjhl uh in his draft year he put up 39 points in 62 games with six goals 33 assists so a really high assist number uh not much of a goal scorer after he got drafted though he really shot up through the qmjhl perhaps growing into his size or figuring out something else uh the next year put up 46 points in the same amount 63 games um and actually had the same amount of assists 33 assists but added seven more goals to make a total of 13 goals 33 assists and 46 points in 63 games uh then the following year in the qmjhl he put up a combined 47 points in um excuse me in 62 games the same amount again um so really just showing consistent growth over his time playing in the queue however once he started to play against a little bit tougher competition uh once he was moved to the Penguins AHL team he really started to struggle a little bit um so that was in 201920 he played 52 games put up 17 points and his stats have never really recovered since then again it isn’t something that you’re necessarily worried he’s going to be a liability um and there is clearly room for growth there there this is still a a very highly drafted Prospect form a first round pick and someone who as a as a 25y old could still have a lot of room to to develop um time in the AHL and then later in the NHL has not really been anything special so his first full season in the NHL was 2022 23 he put up five goals 16 assists to score 21 points in 75 games so okay um I believe he played third pair or depth minutes uh and really wasn’t anything super special however it was solid enough especially for a rookie so much so actually that he ended up finishing 13th in called her voting and made it to the third all rookie team again this isn’t like super Prospect there’s a reason we signed him for under a million dollars but there was some developmental upside there the Penguins had something there and he was noticed by the ne by the league just on a much lower level um the the following year which was last season he had a bit of a tougher year only putting up two goals and nine assists for 11 points and 52 games uh before he was injured and then played in the AHL a little bit um so so not very exciting last year at all the Penguins did have kind of a a weird air about them last year they just couldn’t figure it out as a team but I don’t think that can be used as any real analysis against um Pier Olivier especially as he was only playing depth minutes anyway so not someone the Penguins were exactly relying on and um he he didn’t quite slot in as well as he had the previous year the biggest thing about this entire move is is all of this just kind of Screams of upside for the Blues and at his cap hit it really is a very safe signing um there isn’t a ton more to say about the player Pier Olivier uh other than that you know he’ll be now playing with his brother Matthew which is exciting for them I’m sure um and perhaps playing together on the same Ice uh sharing ice time they can figure something out develop some chemistry as I’m sure they have uh growing up together or perhaps is there something in the Blues organization that they can tap into that they think they found something special if nothing else this is defensive depth and it’s like okay defensive depth you know this is um someone that that you’re not totally upset with them being on the ice especially with the amount of ice time he’s expected to play um for a def defenseman he is an okay shot according to scouting reports um although his goal numbers have never really jumped off the page but his assist numbers really have and that is definitely the strength of his game his primary assists and his passing numbers are very very positive um they really do scream something that again there is upside with this relatively small move on the margin um finally the last notable thing about uh Pier olier is that he excels in the transition game so very good at um moving the ice up and down the puck and um helping create Rush chances out of that as well um that’s something that the blues definitely relied on last year especially on those bottom lines and I think that’s something that they could stand to do so again as we see a lot of our young forwards coming up um a lot of way to manufacture touches and and potentially even points for them is on Rush chances uh hopefully you know we hope that they can use their youth and athleticism with guys that have solid speed to get around them um so all of this to me screams that there is upside with this move there is a chance for him to become something more but even in the case that he doesn’t it’s probably a move uh that you’re okay with and it’s definitely a move that isn’t going to hurt us that cap hit is is significantly low it he has UFA after next year so it is uh super easy to move off of there’s no additional Clauses or anything um really this is a move that can only help the team uh as I see it but let us know what you think you can leave a comment on this video or send a message out to us on social medias uh please like And subscribe on YouTube or wherever you get your podcast give us a festar rating as it helps us out a lot and share this series with with any who you think may be interested as I said this will be the last episode for this Scouting Report series as of right now as these are the only move that the blues have made so far but I do expect that there will be probably a massive trade coming in at least if not the near future then sometime this offseason we will in the case that something like that happens we’ll be recording an episode an emergency of our podcast but additionally um I will provide another episode of this scouting series diving into who we acquire in that case I’d like to thank you all for listening and we will catch you on the next one until then and as always let’s go Blues
