Macklin Celebrini SIGNS with San Jose Sharks (FULL Press Conference)

it was something that I’ve been thinking about since the draft and something that was kind of always on my mind um and I mean throughout the week meeting everybody um kind of getting a sense for for how the year year will go and um the the different the different uh things that that come with it I’m talking to some of some of the guys um I think over over the week I just kind of understood what what I needed to do and um the decision that I had to make when did you know uh Insight that you were going to NHL or you were going to be a San shark um I mean probably at I mean I tried to keep everything open till the end of the week Friday after my exit meetings once I got back to the hotel I kind of I kind of knew um that was that was one I I it really sunk in with me that I knew what I had to do and um I mean everything every time I thought about coming uh to the Sharks I was just really excited and in general just how important was and you mentioned how important was development Camp being in San Jose but also too who the Sharks added in free agency and in trade to kind of show you that hey you’re not going to be kind of left by yourself here yeah I mean they did uh an amazing job obviously brought in some veteran guys some some guys that have played in the league a long time and um I mean they already had some guys there some key pieces that that were that are really important to to the the culture and if you want to win so um I mean it that was that was a big factor for sure um but I mean the pieces that were already there and and bring in those those guys um it was definitely exciting and you mentioned in the week talking with some people around uh who were some of those guys that he talked to that maybe helped tip your decision was it guys like I don’t know Joe thoron or or Mike REI or anybody like that yeah I mean it it wasn’t anything talking about um nothing really talking about uh the decision or or signing or anything like that just more just stuff that they were teaching me um on the ice like Joe Thorne and um Marlo and uh Mike Richi and and pretty much their whole development staff that I interacted with on the ice F off the ice um I was I was I learned so much while I was there and I was just thinking how much more I could learn throughout there Max uh Macklin congratulations was was was there a moment that stood out in Dove camp where you’re like yeah I I want to I want to sign I want to be an NHL player um I don’t think there’s really a moment um I I just think the over over the camp I just I mean I once obviously it was it was a quick Turn Around from the draft to to the the training camp but um over the time I just I I found myself getting more and more excited and um seeing seeing the guys that we have uh the young guys that were there that that were I’m uh I’m kind of growing with and and going through this process with um it really just made me understood and understand like um it’s it’s a really exciting time and um I mean there’s a lot of potential for our group will told us that you two were roommates during development Camp did you guys have any conversations about what went on behind his decision to sign and turn prow and did you take that advice and think about utilize it for when you were thinking about your decision uh no we never really talked about that we were just kind of hanging out um more just having fun obviously we we talked a little bit after the the development Camp of just how it was the reaction feeling what is it going to be like you know do you have any idea of what it might be like when you first step on the ice for your NHL debut I mean just the crowd and everything like that being back home family doesn’t have to travel far has has that kind of settled in and say you can’t get a True Image so you’re there but have you started looking into the future getting excited for something like that yes that’s very exciting I mean it’s something that I’ve dreamed of ever since I was a kid playing in the NHL and um the debut is definitely going to be very exciting and and I can’t wait for it so um it’s definitely something that I’m thinking about but it honestly still still seems so far away so um I’m trying not to trying not to focus on it too much uh we talked to to Todd after after you left the room on on Thursday and and he mentioned that you always want to be first in everything and that’s something that’s not you know taught that’s not something that somebody ever told you to do it’s just that drive and that competitive to be better do you have any idea where that comes from just is that who you are as a person where does that sort of competitiveness to want to be the best come from inside you um I think it’s more just I mean I want to be the best I can be and um help my team do whatever I can to help my team win and I feel like that just it kind of goes hand in hand um to be the best I can be um and try to prepare myself best is so that I can help my team win um that I can be relied upon in those moments to to succeed so um I feel like it it kind of goes hand in hand but um yeah I feel like it’s just it’s kind of just who I am I just I I want to be the best I can be and i’ I feel like I’ve been like that ever since I was a kid awesome thanks again ctis M hey this is Curtis P from the Mercury News again hey congratulations on on the contract U just curious if you’ve heard from any sharks players maybe the for guys who texted you I just congratul you congratulated you on on uh signing your contract yeah I’ve got got a couple texts from a couple different guys um I mean it’s awesome you can you can tell how close that group is and um how excited they are as well about about what we’re building here and and the direction that we’re going so um I mean every message that I got is is all just about how excited um they are to see to see not only me but um the the whole young core that we have and and the guys that we brought in and um it it finally it feels it feels like we’re moving in the right direction any conversation with Ryan rovski about you know potentially what your role might be or is that too soon and maybe just that’ll come down the line I guess yeah I think that’s a little too soon just signed today so um no I feel like that that’s something that that we’ll probably discuss a little bit later you have any conversations or with Jay pandala what he might have said to you as you kind of begin this new chapter yeah I talked to him a bunch um I talked to him I mean in our exit meetings right after the season um he was already thinking about it and um I mean I told him like I I was still on the fence and I mean he he’s been support so supportive through everything um he just he wants the best for for his players and um he just wants to see see us succeed and um I called him right before I made my decision and kind of let him know let him know what what the deal was and um I mean again he was so supportive and um I mean I just appreciate everything that he’s done for me throughout the year and um his support throughout this process so what are the next uh couple months for you kind of kind of look like here as you prepare for for Camp do you give yourself a little time off or is it kind of right back to work here this week as you get ready for uh to be professional no um I mean I’m getting uh back on the ice and skating throughout the week and um in the next coming months but no I’m I’m GNA take some time just to regroup it’s been a busy last couple of um weeks and months so um I’m definitely going to get a little bit of a break but um for the most part part it’s just preparation for next year do you look around the Pacific Division here and some of the centerman that you’re going to be competing against you know guys like uh you know obviously McDavid and copar iole and L pson and those type of players I mean do you have uh kind of looking forward to to competing against those guys here yeah of course those are guys that um I’ve looked up to um while I’ve been growing up seeing them have the success that they’ve had and um other guys that I watch on TV every night so to be facing off against them every night it’s going to be pretty special all right thank you Ma go back to Shane hey Mac just uh wondering uh in terms of your summer plan will it be spent training mostly in Vancouver and Bay Area mix of both or just in general yeah uh for the most part I’ll be in Vancouver um that’s just where my family is and um that’s where I’m planning to be and what do the Sharks tell you in terms of what you do need to focus on over the next two months to make yourself as angel ready as possible um yeah I mean they just they were saying um I mean my whole everyone I’ve talked to I mean now you’re playing against men and you’re playing against grown grown men so um it’s just getting stronger bigger faster um just being able to protect yourself and and being able to separate yourself when needed so um just those kind of things um yeah I mean just just keep uh getting strong longer that that that sort of stuff and finally for me you’ve made the decision to we 71 I know you’ve worn 17 for a lot of your career do you have in the back of your mind maybe it’s Ultra early asked but back of your mind can maybe get back to 17 at some point or are you feeling pretty good about your number um I mean it’s a it would have been tough to switch back to 17 so um I felt like I had a pretty good year last year so I just decided to stick with it okay the fans will happy to hear that thank you very much

Macklin Celebrini signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The 18-year-old center, who was selected by the Sharks with the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, had been undecided on whether he was going to turn pro or return to Boston University this fall.

“Macklin is not only a special player on the ice, but he is a poised, confident and intelligent young man off of it,” Sharks general manager Mike Grier said. “His combination of skills and hockey sense is rare, and we are extremely confident that he is ready to make the transition to being a full-time NHL player. We could not be more excited to have Macklin locked in to formally join the Sharks organization for the 2024-25 season.”

Celebrini said he enjoyed the experience of the draft and getting to know some of his new teammates in San Jose.

“It’s been good, it’s been fun,” he said. “It’s been a long process throughout the draft and stuff, but now is when all the fun begins. You get to skate, play hockey and have fun with the guys.

“We’re moving in the right direction. There are so many amazing players getting ready to make their debuts, especially with the signings that we made. It’s an exciting time and I can see why.”

  2. Wow!
Sharks have a foundation of Celebrini, Smith, Eklund, Musty, Endstrom, Bystedt, Halttunnen, Chernyshov, Dickinson, and Mukuhmadullin.
I really hope they trade for a goalie. I think Askarov would be great, maybe trade Ferraro and Bordeleau for Askarov!

  3. Sharks finally in the midst of rebuilding into a great entertaining team, similar to the one that played in the Shark Tank from 2006-2019. Probably another year or two away from being a playoff contender, but looking forward to the day I renew my NHLTV subscription.
