Leafs Ice Chips: Cowan and Minten show off chemistry, shootout moves

I’m Mark Masters at the Ford performance center in Toronto where the Maple Leafs wrapped up their summer development camp with a blue vers White scrimmage on Sunday two 30 minute halves runtime mostly five on five hockey a little four on four and a little three on three and it wrapped up with a shootout of note the organization’s top two prospects Fraser Min their first pick from the 2022 draft and East cow in their first rounder from 2023 playing together on the top line and leading team blew to Victory they both scored in regulation they both scored in the shootout and they really both set the tone this week we know that those two are you know going to come to main Camp they both have the goal of making the team and just having them play together a little familiarity and then show leadership by driving play and dominating offensively when they could and they did today you you saw that so um just just an idea of you know our our guys that we know are skilled guys just give them a chance to show what they can do together yeah he’s good he’s Elite uh told me when I scored there off the face off he said you know just be ready I’m going to win this I was and I picked my spot there but yeah uh he’s obviously good on the draws I think he was like second in the league in The Westerns so uh he knows how he’s good on the dot so I was ready there how do you feel like you guys kind of complimented each other chry yeah it was good I played with him a bit last year too at Camp so uh it’s just fun playing with him you know he has a lead hockey IQ he played in the NHL last year so he’s got experience and uh he works hard so I feel like we really compliment each other well it’s fun he’s uh he does all the things right out there he makes really good reads and uh he’s fast tenacious so makes it makes it easy and really fun to play with him pretty much everybody you see picked at at the top of a draft has that that mindset that’s why they’re up there and uh they just continue to to go like this usually and Easton’s going uh up a really steep trajectory and I think they’ll keep doing that Cowan had not one not two but three Breakaway chances during regulation time he did not convert but he made a really nice move to score in the shootout I asked him about all those one one opportunities afterwards three breakaways I think I had and I put a rate in the logo every time so I’ll be working on that my driveway at home but I just felt like uh you know on the shootout there I did that move on a penalty shot and no one sound so I told Sam M I was going to do it again and uh I just hit my spot what are your thoughts on that penalty shot strategy like the one where they just kind of the running you like that like uh Rob shrimp uh really uh taught me that move in the penalty shot uh you know kind of like it’s it’s a snake pattern I come to the right come to the left and really slow down it changes the goalie angle so a couple fakes and reap by the goalie heel and uh it should work hopefully I didn’t just give up my secret there did arer catch off guard with yeah I was he was in the same room as me so I was giving it to him a bit but I thought I could have pulled it around but he made a good play there we will see Cowan back on the ice at Hockey Canada’s World Junior Summer Camp later this month which starts in Windsor Ontario before shifting to Plymouth Michigan as for Minton well it’s been a really busy year for for him he’s enjoying some downtime getting a chance to unwind and he’s about to head to Greece for a vacation with his little brother for tsn.ca I’m Mark Masters in Toronto
