Cleveland Guardians have 5 All-Stars named & win their series against San Francisco!

welcome everybody to the latest edition of the ultimate Cleveland Guardian show now twice a week starting at 9:30 although we’re going to two minutes late today because uh I get a little fast and loose with the time sometimes I’m like ah I’ll be able to get everything done in time and I Tred to do 82 things at once in the morning and I screwed it up so now we’re starting two minutes late but here we are we got a lot to get to Zach is here he’s fighting through injury he’s fighting through illness we considered putting him on the iil but you’ve decided to stay off the iil Zach this is a controversial call what do you have to say about that just this is my Jordan Flu Game and on that note it’s time for the ultimate Cleveland Guardian show let’s go let’s go again come on now what is happening [Music] here that’s what makes this show special it’s a little fast and loose a little crazy but uh that’s why we love it to get to here Zack the Guardians finished their first their final home stand before the All-Star break won’t be home for a while now road trip to end the first half even though we’re past the first half so we’ll get to that and what happened this week and what happened with the Giants but first it’s allar time the All-Star game one week from tomorrow we already knew that Jose Ramirez and Steven Quan were starters for Jose Ramirez his sixth appearance in the All-Star game and for Steven Quan his first we were pretty safe in been betting that uh Josh Naylor would make his first All-Star game which he did yesterday and that Emanuel CL would make his third All-Star game which he did yesterday the one thing that was kind of up in the air is would David fry grab a fifth and final spot for the Guardians and the answer is yes cool video in the locker room the clubhouse yesterday where they announced that uh David fry made the allar team and then and the guys went crazy uh we’ve been talking about this for a couple of weeks Zach we thought it could go either way I’m really excited for David fry that he made the All-Star team so there’s a guy who plays for the Brewers he’s a pitcher and in 11 appearances he’s gone 13 and 2/3 Innings 13 runs 20 hits eight walks 14 strikeouts that’s an 856 ER this is over two different seasons um 2022 and 2023 yeah and and he is not pitched this year and the reason he is not pitched this year is because he’s serving a suspension he already served an 80 game suspension now he’s serving a62 game suspension for performance enhancers his name John Carlos Mahia and you might remember him from the traumatic 2021 season when he was just as bad for Cleveland and they were so desperate for starting pitching that he made 11 starts from them had an 825 ra it was brutal nice so somehow after that season Cleveland’s front office was able to flip him to Milwaukee for a player to be named later now that player to be named later was only a player to be named later because there was the lockout and no one knew if there was going to be a rule five draft so they had their sight set on David fry but they didn’t know if David fry would be taken in the rule five draft he was eligible it was too late to protect him from Cleveland standpoint if they would have traded for him so they said the agreement was if if there’s a rule five draft and he gets taken we’ll pick someone else if he doesn’t get taken it’ll be fry 99 day lockout happens it ends everyone rushes to spring training immediately but fry was just in Brewers minor league Camp which he was I mean he was old like the guy didn’t have much of a future because he was he was kind of versatile but versatile more so because he wasn’t great at any position like no one knew if he could really hit he chased a ton and that’s always a like that’s why Bobby Bradley is playing for the team that plays against the Savannah bananas um so so what happens is fry goes to minor league camp with the Brewers it’s like mid or late March and the first day he’s there he’s catching a bullpen session for a pitcher and someone from the Brewers comes and Taps him on the shoulder and they’re like hey man we got to talk we’re trading you to Cleveland and he’s like oh okay you you’re telling me that now on the first day the guy’s like well we’ve we’ve kind of known this was in the works for a few months but we weren’t able to tell you because of the lockout and he’s like okay whatever and he goes to to Cleveland the rest is history yeah nobody involved in that trade not even David fry who joked that he would have guessed he’d be a triaa All-Star not a major league Allstar yeah no one foresaw this but it shows you like it’s you never really know what players are going to become you make a trade anything can happen and that’s one that you look back on and the guy the Guardians gave away is can’t stop taking steroids and getting busted for it and the guy they got is now an All-Star and it’s it’s unbelievable you know even a couple months ago we wouldn’t have predicted this so uh it’s a cool story it’s a cool Journey for him um and he’s been instrumental to what the Guardians have done you know it’s the offense that’s in the bullpen too but the offense has really carried this team and and him lurking behind Jose Ramirez and and Josh Naylor as a right-handed threat has really transformed the lineup there’s no doubt about it it’s a great story Zach I’m sure most of our fans didn’t know about it like all the details and every year there are some surprise all stars but this is an extreme example things like this don’t happen that often yeah there are guys who were decent players and then they kind of bust out and have a great year but this is completely out of left field like you could have given me a list of you could have said to me pick 100 major league players that have never been Allstars before that you think could make their first All-Star game and I would have picked a number of Guardians before let alone other teams before I would have picked David fry I would NE it would never have occurred to me to pick David fry to be an Allstar beyond the fact that you know he hadn’t done much he hadn’t played much but as you said he didn’t have a position and it’s it’s an interesting point some guys become utility guys because they can play a lot of good positions well it wasn’t like oh this guy came up because he’s a great defensive player and can play all these positions at a high level and it was more like can we find a spot for him can he hit you know is he worth trying here is he worth trying there and what he’s become is an extremely valuable member of this team and and the Guardians are not where they are without him I I don’t think there’s any doubt about it because there have been time especially early in the season you know like in April when when Josh Naylor was hitting and not too many other guys fry was hitting and then when when Naylor cooled off and Ramirez got hit hot fry was hitting now he’s cooled off himself recently but they needed him a lot especially in the first two months of the season and he delivered time and time again let’s take it a step further this this offense was putrid last season they were 27th in the league and runs scored we’ve talked about how it doesn’t even do it justice to call them last in the league in home runs because they were so far behind the team that ranked second last four of the first five hitters in their lineup are all stars I mean that’s that’s hard to wrap your head around like that we’re talking like you’re comparing you know they’ve five Allstars it’s the first time they’ve had that many since 2018 um and a lot of the teams that had five Allstars you’re looking at those 90s teams you’re looking at the run where it was Lindor and Ramirez and then a few of their starting pitchers who were so good um or Andrew Miller and it’s like like so we’re comparing this team to those teams but we’re really we’re comparing this team to the 90s teams because it’s the 90s teams that sent four or five hitters every year it’s it’s crazy to compare this lineup to the like I don’t know I mean it’s it’s easy to look back now and say well you had Albert Bell and Mandy Ramirez and Jim those are Hall of Famers those are the scariest dudes you could ever face and you don’t get that feeling when you’re thinking about this lineup but I mean four Allstars in the top five of your lineup is is insane no who would have predicted that no no chance no chance you would obviously we would not have had fry as an All-Star nobody would have picked Stephen like Stephen Quan as an All-Star no way he didn’t even hit 300 last year and so like why would he be an All-Star can’t he didn’t hit 300 and what else does he do you know I mean he’s a good fielder we know what he does but there was nothing Allstar worthy about him going into this year and then you know certainly Naylor had a chance to make it last year he was kind of borderline so you thought but out of these guys the only one you thought for sure was an All-Star was Jose Ramirez that’s it and I think it’s cool the way these guys got voted into you know the fans obviously have taken notice of what Steven Quan has done this year yep and what Jose Ramirez does every year but Naylor and Fry were voted in by their peers it’s not like the league had to scramble and say h we need one more hitter let’s give it to David it’s not like this this wasn’t a team that needed an All-Star and you couldn’t find one so you went with the utility guy who’s hit 300 yeah um no this is these guys were voted in by their peers and I think that says something where other teams have taken notice and I’m sure other pitchers have taken notice of just how irritating it is to to try to get through the top half of this lineup yeah you look at you know some of these other teams with their massive payrolls and I don’t say that to again I hate when people say that to credit ownership or whatever look at them winning this way well it’s a credit to the players and the and the manager but um they have the most Allstars in the American League and you have teams with you know double or even more than that the payroll that the Guardians have and yet you know and and credit to the the organization in terms of the coaching staff throughout the organization that have helped develop these guys and and we’ve talked a while about how the Guardians have had a really hard time and and that’s the developing hitters and that’s the thing right you think about five allars and if I would have just told you randomly before the season all the Guardians left five Allstars you probably would assume there would been at least three pitchers right you thought Bieber or BBY or or Gavin Williams or McKenzie you know colos sure but like for the Guardians to have five Allstars and not one is a starting pitcher when’s the last time that happened I mean it was the 90s teams as you said and let’s give them credit because they were the pitching Factory for so long and everybody praised them they were the Envy of every other team and at the same time we always criticized the hitting side and we always said like why can’t you do what you do on the pitching side for hitters the four Allstars Quan that is the first homegrown outfielder to be an All-Star for Cleveland since Manny Ramirez I mean that’s that’s a long time coming Jose Ramirez came up through the system homegrown that’s I mean he’s what he’s become is unbelievable his story Josh Naylor they traded for him he had had a taste of the majors but you’ve seen him Blossom and get better year after year after year and it’s it’s impressive the development he’s still showing and then fry obviously I mean they traded for him and it was like it was an afterthought that was not supposed to be you’re not supposed to get something useful for JC Mahia right and yet the way and and you know he says I mentioned the chase rate before and how that that just is a killer for some some hitters who are trying to make the jump from the minors to the majors he doesn’t have an explanation for it and I don’t I think it’s just more confidence and and he says it’s just more opportunity but that chase rate he’s almost trimmed in half wow from from where it was in the miners to where it is in the majors now and um and that’s helped I mean he’s he’s he’s got one of the best walk rates in the league and that forces pitchers to throw him strikes and when you know that they’re coming into the strike zone you can you know hit home runs and doubles and and really impact the baseball so I think you just seen give let’s give some credit to finally their they they’ve unlocked something on the hitting side where they have guys developing and it’s not just them like we’ve seen Angel Martinez comes up and looks like he’s a five-year Major League veteran and and like a lot of these young schneeman looks like he belongs a lot of these young hitters have come up and have had early success and it’s just it feels completely different than how it has in the past and you mentioned the David fry trade you think about the other trades getting CL for a washed up Cory clubber I mean Cory cubber’s done nothing and is now retired he gave the Rangers one inning yeah and that was it I mean his career was over basically after he left Cleveland he had he had a couple of moments with the Yankees for 10 seconds but and class is maybe the best value in terms of contract of any player in baseball certainly one of them and then the Josh Naylor trade with San Diego obviously the key piece going to San Diego was cleer who’s done nothing and did nothing for them they got Matt Waldren in that deal who’s now starting for them but he’s not great you know and the the Guardians will see with our Arius who’s still part of that trade and Joey cantio but I mean that that trade is a steal so you look at those three trades that they got those three Allstars I mean those were absolutely absolute heists by the Guardians I I think it’s it’s funny you know we we slammed them for some moves last year that looked really bad you know the will Benson trade the Nolan Jones trade and even though those guys have come back to earth and then some this year it’s yeah I still don’t want to just give them a pass for that those guys could have helped immensely last season yes but just because you have a rough stretch doesn’t mean that that’s just who you are now I mean this front office has been really good at making trades and and unearthing talent for a long long time and I think this year’s been a reminder and and let’s also I don’t want to gloss over the fact that during the offseason they did nothing like internal expectations were not to be on Pace to win 103 games or whatever it is at the All-Star break they like I think they thought that they’d be a middling team and they would need a lot to go right to be in the position they’re in and that they were still building towards something so like they could have made some moves over the offseason and maybe shorted up some of the starting pitching depth and they wouldn’t be having some of the issues they’re having but like they’re still a good front office and I think it’s easy to lose sight of that after a couple deals that maybe don’t look good for a year no doubt um it’s fair to be critical when there’s a mistake made I I think consistently both you and I have said I trust this front office they’re one of the best if not the best in baseball everybody makes mistakes everybody screws up sometimes obviously the lack of spending it’s hard to blame the front office that’s that’s a ownership thing but uh yeah I mean when the and that’s why I’m so I so want the Guardians to make deals because I feel like more often than not they’re going to get it right when they make a trade they’re going to to win the trade if you will and you don’t have to win it’s fine if the other team also gets a win in that trade but you know the Guardians when they’ve made trades especially have often come out smelling like roses and they need to do it again here but we’ll hold on to that uh Guardians played a three- game series with the Giants over the weekend the final homestand before the All-Star break and before this final road trip this week we’ll talk about that in a second but first I want to talk to you about FanDuel uh if you’re uh if you’re if you want to use FanDuel now is the time if you’ve been thinking about using FanDuel Zach let’s um let’s talk about this weekend uh and the Guardians taking two out of three against the Giants first let’s it’s always the big Sunday game we’ve talked about this before you want to end on a good note they did again uh Carlos Carrasco kind of what he’s been right not great but as usual as he’s done almost every start this year except for i’ say four or five he’s given them a chance to win he’s given them a chance to stay in the game he gives up the three runs early the Home Run bites him again but Guardians C claw back with two and then a pinch hit three-run Homer by Bo Naylor who don’t look now but he’s it’s been getting hot last few weeks an absolutely clutch at bat and they hold on in the ninth to win uh uh nice Victory after being down three nothing early needing to win that Series so many games this season they were on the other end of last year they were the team giving up the key hit they were the team who couldn’t cash in with runners in scoring position who just fell victim to like last year you know classa gave up the run in the ninth and uh Martinez made the bad throw yeah uh with two outs last year that would have resulted in the the game tying run like somehow that run would have come home but they’ve they’ve pulled out like when when you know how they say in the NBA it’s so much is about those 50 50 balls and yep um like it seems like these 50/50 games in baseball like they win 98% of the time I don’t know if that’s sustainable I don’t know like how to I can’t really put a finger on like exactly what it is but they just always make the right play at the right Tim or they get the key hit at the key time they get the strikeout they need at the right time and you know those were those are three games that really could have gone either way over the weekend and you won two or three and that’s what you want to do um is keep winning series and it it feels like they’re not playing great baseball because do because they’re not just like running over teams right but this is that doesn’t happen like it’s hard to do that in baseball for six months um and I it’s again like they are so good at taking a little rough stretch and keeping it little and they lose three or four in Kansas City and then they come back and a 4-2 home stand is a good home stand no matter who you’re playing so I it’s it’s it’s just impressive they just have not had like when are they ever going to lose like eight or 10 or 12 or 15 or something I just keep waiting for that to happen and it maybe it just isn’t you know it’s funny when you say um it feels like they’re not playing as well and in some ways they’re not you know things have been a little shakier at times lately but it’s a good sign that we’re to the point with the Guardians that we’re kind of looking at style points a little bit right it’s like it’s almost like football well you won but you didn’t win impressively this is baseball it’s 162 games I all just get the W it doesn’t matter uh yes they they in some ways they haven’t been quite as crisp the last couple of weeks but maybe that’s their slump maybe that’s their slump is that they’re they’re still winning but not as crisply and uh that’s that’s a you know if that’s the worst that it gets then then that’s a good thing and you’re right it does feel like last year every time there was a mistake every time there was an error it always turned into something worse and now like that play in the ninth with the error you’re like in in last year you would been like oh God here we go but I never had that thought like I mean I know it’s class and I know he did give up a run which is a shocker but this entire season I never feel that stress of he’s going to blow the save ever it never crosses my mind even after he’d given up a run even after an eror in the ninth that I would think oh no there’re it’s going to fall apart here and and and every time it hasn’t almost every time do you remember the game there Guardians were at Wrigley last year and there was I think there was a rain delay and then I had to catch a flight so I remember leaving Wrigley yeah in in the ninth before the ninth inning and class came in and it was they had a four-run lead and I’m thinking like okay I know it’s been a rough year I know he is he hasn’t quite been himself he’s fallen victim to a lot of just like random a bloop here an error here an infield Chopper here but there’s no like like I’m safe to leave like I’m not going to miss anything that I need to see with my own eyes and I just remember sitting in a cab like watching I don’t even think I was watching the game I think I was just like following it on game day so I was just seeing like the pitch by pitch and like watching that Innings evolve he gave up four runs and I couldn’t believe it and then they go to extras and I think they lost and it’s like like that it was Murphy’s Law last year everything that could go wrong went wrong and you expect your brain was wired to assume the worst was going to happen and this year I don’t know I just I assume that they’re gonna get the big hit right like I Bo Naylor came up and he hit the Home Run I was like yeah it makes sense doesn’t matter what his stats are for the year um and then the bullpen comes in and and doesn’t give up a run of course of course CAD Smith people are arguing today that Kade Smith and Hunter gatis and Tim Heron should be all stars just like we all expected the you know the conversation to be a few months ago like it’s it makes sense now and I think we’re training ourselves to maybe Shake free from what we thought last year and accept the new reality even if it just is shocking because who would have seen this style of of play working and with these people but like when your Bullpen is dominant when you have an offense that’s capable like that that can take you a long way it’s not to say that they don’t need to address the rotation but they have a lot of good things going for them and and they’ve found a way to where for now you know you’re eventually going to burn out that Bullpen but like they can get by if their starter can give them five innings which carrasco’s done uh you look at the eras in the bullpen CL 085 Hunter gtis 128 Tim Heron 150 Eli Morgan it feels like he’s having a bad year he’s got a 198 um Cade Smith 250 Pedro Aila 279 Sam henis 286 Scott Barlo 347 and Nick sandin uh a bullpen worst 356 I mean when the worst guy when the worst ER in your Bullpen of the guys you use significantly is 356 and I know erra is not the end all Beall but if you look at their base runners low per nine innings I mean it’s crazy Hunter Gattis and Emanuel CL have combined to pitch 85 innings they’ve given up two home runs and 12 walks and 45 hits and 10 runs between them I mean as as you know gtis he had that bad weekend what was it against Atlanta where he had those couple bad games in a row first pretty much and that that’s it that’s it he had a one bad couple of games it is I mean you TCH class gtis Smith and Heron have each allowed one home run that’s unbelievable it it is yeah it’s absolutely crazy they’re not walking anybody which is key when you’re in the bullpen I guess they shut down the wind Vortex when when those guys are on the mound Progressive Field I know are you buying the wind at all being a factor it knocked down a lot of balls over the weekend yeah I don’t I don’t know I can’t it just be hitters have got like young hitters have gotten better yeah I think it could be mostly that maybe maybe there are days where the wind helps who knows yeah I don’t doubt I think it’s mostly about the hitters yeah I think so let’s talk let’s uh see what some of the fans have to say uh let’s see Cory who was your favorite Indians player growing up his was Cory Snider who is your favorite player growing up David Justice Just the smoothest left-handed swing outside of griffy uh we could tell how you know the year a lot younger than me because I was because my favorite you know and I didn’t grow up an Indians fan but I always liked Andre Thornton sure one my favorites growing up Andre thoron uh Double K creative good morning Bull and Zack so happy to catch you guys live good morning uh Hans my man Hans Martinez and schneeman need to be in there every day I just like saying schneeman I’m just gladies on the team just so I can say schneeman because it’s a funny name to say they both put up such great at bats he’s right I mean right now those guys got to be in the lineup just about every day let’s see what they what they can do play I mean and you know schneeman certainly has been in the lineup a lot I love what I’ve seen from him he was a 33rd round pick he was the 103d overall pick and never had flashy numbers in the miners until very recently and now made some swing adjustments and looks like he could be a big leager for a no de time uh Boon County Dominator says are they going to spend money now since fans are showing up and the team is winning well we’ve been talking about this for weeks and weeks the deadline is 22 days away Zach we’re hope we’re hopeful I heard some the comments from Mike uh chernoff over the weekend didn’t he I thought it was funny that he said I credit ownership for um spending money on uh what’s his name I just forgot his name the guy what’s that Matthew Boyd yeah on Matthew Boyd like he sent I’m sure he sent a major league minimum what money 300,000 I mean what I will tell people please please please first of all never put stock into what any executive is saying ever but also especially on like a public National radio appearance three weeks before the trade deadline it’s it’s they’re not going to they’re not going to say yeah the starting pitching Market’s great we’re going to land two starters they’re not going to Telegraph anything for you so you know if they’re if they sound hesitant about what the market might look like don’t put stock into that either they we know that they need starting pitching they know more than we do that they need starting pitching I’m sure that they’re sick of conferencing every night after every game trying to figure out who the heck is going to start for them two days from now or who’s even available out of the bullpen the next day like they they get it we have to see how the market takes shape you know you’re starting to see more teams Fade Out of the race and like a team like Texas if they end up selling all of the sudden there’s there’s a new crop of really intriguing pictures you can go acquire right and that completely changes the market so you know you see more teams H where that happens like go sweep Tampa this weekend and then you can go have your your choice of all their pitchers if you want like there’s there’s a lot of time left and this is n really going to pick up either until after the draft and I’ve had front office people tell me that too it’s like you’re not going to see much happen until that’s over yeah uh we just got to be hopeful that the ownership’s willing to spend because again we’ve talked about two two starters and and a hitter but this team with a couple of pitchers is definitely a World Series contender in my mind yeah and I mean I how can you not see the crowds I mean they’ve had they’ve had nine sellouts already it’s the fastest they’ve gotten to one 1 million in attendance since 2008 so like how can you see that the atmosphere that you’ve cultivated it’s it’s a refreshingly exciting brand of baseball I mean that we’ve we sat through 2021 and 2023 which were just brutal to watch even 2022 until they really figured out like how to go all in on that Slappy style of you know singles and stolen bases yeah um it wasn’t great to watch for the first half of the year and this is different like this is an exciting brand like people are getting excited you get three-run homers like you did yesterday and you know the place is packed every night you’re bringing in Revenue people love the city connect stuff like capitalize on that don’t let that go to waste it’s a great chance to build Good Will with the fans uh spending money on a trade I could get crazy and say maybe they sign either Naylor or or or a quan or somebody to an extension I know that’s you know neither of those things are likely but ownership should take Advantage the fans are into it the fans want to believe they want to buy in and they’re showing up at the Ballpark Now’s the Time they they got to do it right they did this in 2016 and 17 I mean they they traded for Andrew Miller they tried to trade for Jonathan lukoy and then in the offseason they signed Edwin en carosio so like they’ve they’ve shown in this exact situation in the past that they understand the assignment right that doesn’t guarantee anything now but you know it’s it’s it would be it would be a big Miss to to take this for granted 100% Mike says do you think it could end up hurting in the playoffs having Freeman schneeman Angel Etc playing out of position in the Outfield those things could hurt them sure that that’s a possibility something to keep in mind none of them are accomplished outfielders Frankie my My worry is ownership will be happy to challenge for the division go out early in the playoffs every year and won’t make any big moves let’s that’s everybody’s fear let’s hope it won’t be the case uh Denise why make a trade our farm system is good enough to pull a pitcher from it no it’s not there’s no pitchers coming in this farm system right now when you’re trading for Spencer Howard in July I think that’s the proof right there uh old Ben I don’t think there are enough pitcher spots there needs to be like 10 starter and 15 bull Bullpen spots Cleveland has four Bullpen guys putting up All-Star numbers yeah middle relievers are not going to the all-star game with with rare exception if anybody was going to go would be hund gtis but uh a super chat from Old Ben Big B big fan bow and Angel has been nearly as impressive to me as Quan was when he came up in 22 what plate discipline he hits pitch his pitches well too I’ve been really impressed I know you have been Zach so you know can he take hold of this job here yeah so he’s I mean he’s played second third Center yeah he’s a switch hitter which is key up there too because you can’t just you know you can you’re G to get opposing teams bring in lefties to face Quan and Naylor and even though those guys can handle left he’s fine but the plate discipline is unbelievable I mean he’s got eight walks and 25 plate appearances and it’s you know I don’t know that that was a huge part of his game coming up um but yeah it’s it’s gonna be interesting like I think they can still fit an everyday established player into this lineup that they can acquire via trade and we’ve said like it doesn’t matter like that guy can play center right second short whatever DH and you can fit them in because so many these young guys have versatility so um I think they’re looking for just anyone who can stick you know if Martinez if schneeman can prove that like hey or if they stay hot for the next few weeks like they they’ll still get at bats down the stretch but they shouldn’t close the door on acquiring another hitter I don’t think you want to just assume that all these young guys are going to stay hot through October absolutely couple of quickies Tanner BBY struggled on Friday when the Guardians lost that was by far his worst start in a while what’ you see from him you know it’s I mean it’s command with him like the stuff is there but it’s it’s tough I think when he I don’t know how much he would never admit this but when you know you’re the one guy in the rotation who can get into the seventh inning how much pressure do you put on yourself to be super efficient yeah and to not give up base runners so that you can keep that pitch countdown so you can get into the seventh eighth inning even like I I don’t know it’s tough to evaluate because he would never admit to that you know you know things can change he threw so many pitches in that first inning and it was like yeah then it’s just like survival and Logan Allen his start his last start not this similar to what he’s done he gets off first couple Innings he looks good he actually had a lot of strikeouts and then it falls apart and then they end up optioning him to the miners you think that’s a situation where it’s like all right let’s give him a couple of weeks off and we’ll have him right back up after the All-Star break or does he have to prove something down to the miners before he comes back up probably not I mean it it like they did this with him last year too I don’t know I just I wonder if the stuff is good enough to to ever truly stick as like a a guy that you’re not even considering removing from your rotation because he’s you know if he’s he he’s up at 93 pitches through what four and a third four and two thirs and yeah you know a lot of that is because his stuff he just doesn’t quite have that putaway stuff so guys are fouling off pitches Staying Alive drawing walks um you know it’s it’s it’s tough like I’m not I’m not writing him off by any means but you I don’t know that you fix that with two weeks in Columbus um you know I think McKenzie kind of needed a mental reset and just a change in approach like the way he just needs to attack hitters more and just yeah not be fearful of you know if they get a hold of a fast ball they get a hold of a fast ball he needs to pitch from ahead and the count with Logan Allen it’s like I don’t you know is there something you can change with your pcks pitch usage and is there you know do you are you missing something do you need to tweak a certain pitch to make things more effective like what is your go-to stuff I don’t I don’t know what it is and that’s why I don’t like McKenzie I think we saw in 2021 he went down came back up and was much better yeah with Logan Allen I think he’s kind of just depth at this point you know they don’t even know what they have in this Spencer Howard guy because yeah he’s they haven’t seen him yeah um you know Matthew Boyd is again another depth piece but this is a guy coming back from Tommy John’s surgery who’s not even going to be built up till August yeah so it’s like he’s never been that good anyway yeah your expectations for him have to be low so you know I think they’re just trying to stockpile as much depth as possible just to so that they have bodies to get them through the end of the season but I think if you want like legitimate upgrades in the rotation it has to be Gavin Williams and it has to be a trade yeah there’s no doubt that Gavin Williams is one of the keys obviously he was bad in his first start but it’s one start we need to see him for a while he’ll get two more starts before the break and they’re going to have to add because once you get to the playoffs yeah you have three good starters and a great pen okay you’re fine but it’s got to be Gavin Williams and one other guy Ben Lively is your fourth starter in the playoffs this the way he’s pitched is is more than fine that’s it McKenzie’s first start back in columb is not good I mean it was kind of like we’ve seen in the majors home runs and you know we’ll see what they can do with him Zach great stuff is always again we’re doing two shows a week now so we’ll be back Friday at 9:30 a feel better all right the the final road trip you’re not you’re not going on the road are you I’m going on the road anyone going to Detroit make sure you stop at slows barbecue I forgot about that I forgot you told me you were going Detroit Detroit and Tampa seven games in seven days uh tonight Gavin Williams makes that second starts since coming off the injured list uh the Guardians will face um who’s pitching for the GU for the Tigers kider Montero I think it’s his second Major League start maybe yeah they get to miss scoble so that’s a victory right he pitched great yesterday they’ll face flarity who’s pitched well and um anyway that’s it and then they’ll go to Tampa Bay before the break uh thanks everybody for joining us thanks everybody for watching hit the like hit the thumbs up Zack I’ll talk to you soon feel well we’ll talk to you next time right here on the ultimate Cleveland Guardian show
