a pleasure talking to you thanks Chuck always enjoy it it’s always good to catch up with you well you’ve been doing a lot of homework I know you’ve been looking at the draft and all that and interviewing I think last year you told me you talked to like 60 prospects at all how’s the how’s been the prep work for this year’s MLB draft coming for you it’s been great of I’m up to 62 draft interviews so far was out at the College World Series a couple of weeks ago watching a bunch of these top guys interviewing them doing one-on ones talking to different coaches people around them as well been out seeing some of the top guys in Wisconsin as well so excited for the draft coming up here quick and uh should be fun to see how it all plays out all right let’s talk about a couple of guys who were in last year’s draft uh Brock wilin been hearing a lot about him and what he we talked about him last year from Wake Forest and Cooper Pratt G to be in the Futures game get to Pratt first of all and and what you thought of his season how he’s coming along because obviously he’s having a great year yeah I really liked Cooper Pratt last year when the Brewers drafted him in the sixth round they paid him about a million dollars over the projected sign bonus allotment for that pick he was a guy coming into the draft considered a first second round Prospect ended up falling to the sixth round where the Brewers took him Cooper Pratt thought he was going to college and then the Brewers gave him a call but either way Cooper Pratt has been one of the bigger steals so far of the draft at least for a guy that wasn’t selected in the first round someone who’s showing really good play discipline especially for a guy only at 19 years old hitting for average showing some Line Drive extra base hit power in that bat he’s playing at Carolina in class A where he’s a younger player for that level and doing really well and I’ve really liked his potential and I think he’s a guy that in a few years could be someone that’s Manning an infield spot for the Brewers he’s played shortstop this entire season at Carolina I think he can stick at shortstop long term but he definitely has the versatility to play other infield positions as well Brock wilin the first round pick what are the Returns on him Danny yeah Brock wilin last year throughout the draft cycle the big question with him was the swing and Miss he showed some improvement throughout his Junior season cut down on that really had a lot of success for Wake Forest was really a key piece in that Wake Forest lineup a team that went deep into the NCAA tournament and fell just short of a national title this year he’s off to a little bit of a slow start he’s hitting for plenty of power the average isn’t quite there yet he’s played at Double A mostly this season and has 66 strikeouts 28 walks definitely would like to see that number a little closer to one another preferably strikeouts obviously down and the average at 226 not going to cut it but this is also kind of what the Brewers drafted was a power hitter who wasn’t going to be a high average guy so we’ll see how it pans out he’s still a really young guy at only 22 years old already at able a so um definitely need some more seasoning in the minor leagues with someone who can maybe be up next year at the major league level if everything goes right and how the Brewers expect Dan the Brewers minor league system seems like they’re winning a lot of games they’re really really good I I look at uh some of the records down there sometimes that doesn’t isn’t really a true indicator on Major League Talent down there but when you look at the Brewers farm system what kind of shape do you see that in I think overall it’s in pretty good shape you have Jacob mizerowski who’s the top pitching Prospect in the farm system he struggled a little bit with walks this year but overall he’s been decent you’d like to see him be a little bit better but again a guy that could use a little bit more time but I don’t think it’s too far off from pitching in the major leagues he’s at Double A right now only 22 years old lot to like with an elite fastball and then we talked about some of the guys with Cooper Pratt I think is definitely one of the premium prospects in this year’s draft class and if you kind of go down a ways too just in their kind of farm system rankings I’ve really liked Mike bovie he was a second round pick for the Brewers last year Nebraska Omaha I thought he was underrated this year he’s having a lot of success still not hitting for a ton of power and that’s something he’s worked on with his swing mechanics but I think he’s kind of a guy that’s underrated in their system so Brewer farm system in general I like I think there’s some guys with a lot of UPS side still and I think there’s some guys that can also contribute later on this season for them as well the Brewers have a lot of these young guys on the parent team right now on the on the major league level a lot of their young outfielders are up here freck you know we we can name a bunch of them five or six guys uh in total but there’s so many do you look at Outfield being a one of the priorities for the Milwaukee Brewers and how do you see them going on on their pecking order on things they might want here in this Major League Draft yeah that’s a great question I guess in terms of just the MLB draft in general most teams don’t usually draft for need especially early on in the draft it’s just not a long-term successful plan because things can change year after year guys don’t pan out in the minor leagues but if we look at what the Brewers have done in recent history they’ve really focused on College position players early on in the draft and it seems like this year they’re kind of in that similar position Outfield is definitely one of those areas they’ got guys like Carson Ben who’s an outfielder from Oklahoma State Vance Honeycut another outfielder as well that they’re looking at if we’re just looking at the Brewers overall farm system and what they need they could at this point add more outfielders because a lot of their premium outfielders are in the major leagues or Triple A and then they have never had a guy replace Prince Fielder since he left so I still think at some point you need to find that long-term solution and they’ve never been able to find a first baseman to do that third base is kind of a similar situation never have really found a long-term answer at third base Brock wilin could be that guy so those are a couple areas pitching you can never have too much pitching and the Brewers have shown they can develop pitching as well so I think those are some of the areas if you’re a Brewers fan you’d hope maybe they’d address at some point throughout the draft Dan zalinski joining us from baseball Prospect Journal we’ll get more with him and see what he thinks about who the Brewers are zeroing in on 17 and 34 in that first round the site for several years how how’s the site going coming along for you Dan site’s going well this is year 10 covering the draft which is hard to believe and we have writers all over the country now covering the draft covering college baseball so it’s it’s exciting to see how it’s grown and how much more coverage the draft has gotten over these last 10 years and Dan has been doing a great job doing that over the years and uh breaking down the draft and doing interviews as he said 62 different prospects he’s interviewed so far all right let’s get to a guy you mentioned right before the break Danny uh Carson benj out of Oklahoma State yeah Carson benj is a guy who is a two-way player from oklah Oklahoma State he’s honestly a legit draft prospect as a two-way player but more Scouts prefer him as an outfielder compared to a right-handed pitcher if he was a right-handed pitcher he’d probably go maybe like third round but he’s going to go in the first round as an outfielder 61 195 pounds left-handed hitter really a quality Prospect someone who has really great contact oriented skills drives the ball into the gaps Line Drive hitter his power has improved he hits home runs in 2013 2023 excuse me and 18 this spring and he’s a guy that Scouts think maybe needs to make a couple slight swing adjustments to tap into a little bit more power but really from an approach standpoint a strike zone discipline standpoint those are there and he’s a guy who’s going to play a quality Corner Outfield spot he’s got above average arm strength he’s athletic he was up to 96 on the mound so a lot to like there with Carson Carson benge is is he guy do you know if the Brewers have had interest a guy that they’re talking to because I see Ben’s name mentioned somewhere for a lot of different teams in the draft how do they go about doing this yeah so he’s one of those guys in that kind of range where the Brewers are selecting at number 17 that’s definitely in play there as well as kind of the picks around them in the teens and early 20s the Brewers have been really connected to college position players this draft cycle like I’ve mentioned and he’s one that they’ve really kind of focused on throughout this cycle all right uh Vance Honeycut out of North Carolina tell me a little about the upside and what he’s got going on yeah I really like Vance hyut now he is a polarizing Prospect when you talk to Talent evaluators he’s someone I saw at the College World Series really had a phenomenal NCAA tournament he hit six home runs in nine games and when you just see the player there’s a lot to like from a size standpoint he’s 63 190 pounds he’s athletic hits for power plays Elite center field defense can cover a ton of ground make some highlight reel catches strong arm and really has five tool potential biggest question mark though is a swing and miss and that’s something he struggled with this year even though he hit for a really nice average 318 28 home runs he did strike out 83 times in 225 at bats only had 36 walks so that’s something that is really kind of hurting Vance honey Cut’s draft stck even though he had a really good NCAA tournament and that definitely propelled him to get some early interest in kind of around starting at 12 with the Red Sox to as far down as into the 20s Honeycut is just really polarizing so it’s gonna be really interesting to see where he goes the Brewers are connected to him the Brewers showed last year they’re willing to take a guy with some swing and Miss concerns in Brock wilin I think from a package skill set standpoint Honeycut offers a lot more than Wilkin did so I think he’s a guy that’s definitely in play the Brewers have that at interest and I think it’s kind of a little bit of a lottery ticket because if he’s able to cut down on those swing and misses you’re getting a potential Superstar here swinging misses do Major League teams do Scouts really look at that and say boy I see the strikeout ratio and all that and that really concerns me is that a real big thing that a major league baseball a little bit especially because if you think about it even though he’s playing in the ACC which is the second best college baseball conference he’s still swing and Miss at a lot of pitches and he’s not always facing premium MLB caliber pitching so that is something teams look at and sure there’s a lot of strikeouts happening across baseball these days but that’s still something kind of when you’re looking at nitpicking these prospects like the teams are at this point in the draft cycle that’s something that’s going to come up in discussion two more players who I’ve heard mentioned around that uh where the where the Brewers are taking 17 and 34 cam Smith the third baseman from Florida State sver King Third Base but out of Wake Forest why don’t what do you know about cam Smith yeah cam Smith he’s a guy that coming out of high school was definitely a name people were looking at he was also another player I saw at the College World Series really good size and someone that Scouts are a little bit split on if he can stick at third base long term or if he’s going to have to move over to first base but when you’re drafting a guy like cam Smith you’re drafting him because of his Bat he’s someone that’s getting interest in the teens few picks before the Brewers as well as obviously after the Brewers too but he’s 6’3 220 pounds really like his right-handed swing very little movement in that swing it’s very simple doesn’t waste a lot of energy and just hits line drives into the gaps has a ton of power potential when I saw him play he didn’t you know have a huge performance at the play in the games I scouted him but defensively I thought he looked really solid at third base he showed a strong accurate arm and for his size he moved pretty well too at the Hot Corner how about Siver King Siver King he’s a guy that’s really interesting because the his first two years of college baseball he was at the division 2 level this past off season he transfers to Wake Forest which is one of the better programs in college baseball and this is a prototypical kind of Brewers type Prospect he’s someone that can really play all over the diamond Short Stops second base Third Base Outfield and he’s six foot 190 pounds more of a contact overpower hitter but really he excels from the right side of the plate ability to drive the baseball into the gaps and has above average speed someone who I think profiles more as a top of the order hitter rather than a middleof the order hitter and he’s another guy getting a lot of interest here in the teens we’re going to see a lot of college guys go in the first round if we look at just the draft in general the biggest strength in this year’s draft is College position players the biggest weakness is high school position players so we’re going to see a lot of college players drafted and with where the Brewers are picking at 17 there’s going to be a lot of college position players there that’s why you see them connected to that those all those guys as well as teams all around them being connected to college position players Iowa you and I were texting back and forth earlier today and I asked you about uh Brody Breck uh you said he’s got Ace potential pitcher out of Iowa yeah Brody bre he’s got a really interesting backstory because he’s a high school native he’s an Iowa native in high school decided to bypass the draft and go to Iowa where he was a two sport guy for the first two years of his career played wide receiver on the football team and then pitched on the baseball team after a sophomore year decided to give up Football Focus only on baseball really honestly football was kind of his true love but he realized you know baseball he had better potential but when we look at him as a prospect 6’4 230 like I said to you Ace potential and his fastball breaking ball is just as good as any pitcher in this year’s draft class at onew punch his biggest concern has been kind of the walks this year he averaged 5.6 walks per nine if we look at the top two pitchers in this draft class Chase Burns Hagen Smith they were both under 3.6 walks per nine so just kind of shows the difference but overall from a pitch skill set standpoint High 90s fastball has touched triple digits he even touched 104 last year at Maryland and really just a lot to like from a size arm strength athleticism his delivery doesn’t really have any effort to it pretty easy so for me he’s a guy that if you get him in the right Player Development system a system that’s known for developing pitching he could Thrive if he cuts down on those walks and improves his control he’s a Frontline starter if he doesn’t he’s probably like a closer High leverage reliever Dan I like those guys who are football players and baseball they just bring a sort of toughness with them when uh to the game of baseball I don’t know what it is but I obviously Bo Jackson’s the first guy I think of Dion but you know there’s been so many guys who’ve played football and and baseball those two guys did it at the professional level but tell me what you think about that the guys who are football players and baseball players I really like in today’s day and age where we’re seeing so much specialization I still think being a multiport athlete is very beneficial I know talking to some Scouts too that did that when they were growing up then ended up going on to play professional baseball they still talk about the value of being a multiport athlete and like you said I like it from the competitive standpoint and then also just the toughness mentality standpoint too and bro bre is a guy that saw time on the field at Iowa so it’s not like he was just a scrub football player he he was a talented football player so I like that and that’s one of the things I like about him on the mount to is that kind of Bulldog mentality that he has from football awesome Dan hang out we’re going to do one more break here and come back Dan zalinsky joining us from baseball Prospect journal.com draft Guru matches the name of Dan zilinski we’ll see what he thinks about some of the players from the state of Wisconsin who might get drafted maybe the Brewers might be interested in one of these guys Chuck Freeman here on lockon Brewers part of Dan Z get him on Twitter Dan Z Dan zalinski z i e l i n s k I3 better you have to go to his website baseball Prospect journal.com Dan zilinsky been running that for 10 years so you when you were an intern with me 10 years ago behind my back you were running this website I didn’t know what’s been going on for 10 years Dan yeah it’s been a while and even when I was covering the Brewers I covered some drafts there and I remember like early on it I was you know asking Doug Melvin or whoever draft questions and while the beat writers just kind of sat there so um good times good times covering it was great times one of the best interns ever had you’re in the the Freeman intern Hall of Fame Dan what made you get interested in the amateur draft and and amateur baseball in general yeah that’s a great question so I’ve always had a passion for baseball always enjoyed watching talking about baseball and when I was at a student at w Milwaukee in the journalism program I was trying to find something that I could write about that wasn’t highly covered and and had my own website at the time and was looking just to you know keep writing about sports and after not having success with trying to interview football basketball players decide why not try college baseball and really had a lot of success interviewed before this year I’ve interviewed I think it’s 518 prospects so do the math with 62 more guys there um 580 interviewed almost 200 first round picks in this point so just really enjoyed doing it college baseball is something and the draft really for that matter when I first started doing this was not really covered not really talked about a lot and now it’s really kind of grown in popularity more and more eyes are on college baseball on the draft so it’s been cool to see and have really enjoyed getting to cover Scout and share the stories of some of these draft prospects and these Northwoods leagues I mean this thing has exploded I’ll be honest when it first came several years ago gosh almost 20 years ago I was like oh how long is it is going to last but cities like fodac have got him Green Bay Milwaukee you know you you look around you there’s a lot of great teams great franchises to watch some of these college Stars play yeah right now baseball Prospect Journal has two interns covering the Northwoods league so definitely check us out for that coverage covering top prospects in the league but you talk about it like Pete Alonzo was just honored a couple weeks ago by the Madison mards Max Scherer pitched in the league Dalton V he went to WM now playing for the Blue Jays bunch of talent has come through the Northwoods league and it’s been cool to see Dan zinski joining us from baseball Prospect journal.com Dan all right let’s get to the high school players here in in the state why don’t you give us a rundown some of the the top names we might be looking out for yeah so there’s really three guys to watch for in the draft I really think two of them are probably going to get drafted one is for sure going to sign and the first one is JD dicks he’s a shortstop from White Fish Bay High School he’s been on the scene ever since his freshman year and someone I’ve covered extensively since that time 6’2 195 pounds switch hitting short stop and really has been well regarded throughout his high school career entered this year probably as like a potential second third round pick stack fell a little bit because he was recovering from Lum surgery in his right shoulder and really kind of eased back into it this spring he started the Year by dhing then he was playing second base so Scouts really didn’t get a chance to see him at shortstop had a really good performance at the draft combine a couple weeks ago now he’s kind of back into that second third round consideration he’s a Wake Forest commit and gonna be a potential early round pick someone who can really play around the diamond too so really like JD dicks a lot Eddie reinders he’s a short stop from Wisconsin Lutheran High School and he’s really kind of blowing up this spring really shot up draft boards someone who is now kind of in that third to fifth round consideration a lot like JD dicks in terms of a size and skill set perspective at 62 195 pounds left-handed hitter drives a base ball into the gaps with a really kind of simple mechanics Line Drive swing he’s got a lot of upsid still left a lot of untapped potential still really raw as a baseball player interesting he’s a Kent State commit also could be drafted this July here in in the next week and then the last guy to watch out for is Jack dtin he’s a right-handed pitcher from Verona High School good size 6’3 180 pounds biggest kind of hurdle for him is he’s a high school right-handed pitcher and that demographic is the riskiest demographic in the draft then you’re talking about a guy from a cold weather state so that just adds to it he’s someone who probably could be fourth fifth round to seventh round pick to me he’s a Xavier commit if I’m him I go to Xavier pitch in college try to improve my draft stock but he’s a guy throwing 96 on the mound from the right side so there’s a lot of potential there too it’s just with the demographic where he lives I think he’s gonna end up probably going to college if I had to put money on it Dan I see the council boys I know it’s a long way before they’re considered but are they drawing any interest at all I saw one of was playing in the Northwoods League any are they drawing any early interest at all not right now they’re honestly kind of kind of similar to Craig in terms of a skill set standpoint not huge power hitters more Gap to gap on base guys play strong fundamental baseball the younger one younger Council son who just committed to Northwestern after spending his freshman year at Michigan probably has a little bit more upside than the older son um Jack and Brady Council and um yeah they’re probably going to get some looks helps at your a major league manager so I’m sure they’ll get some looks when time comes but they’re not it’s early in the game yeah exactly yeah early in the game I thre a curveball there you just mentioning guys I was thinking I remember seeing the council kid uh playing for the lake shore Shooks uh was in the paper the other day there a little photo of him so hey Dan great stuff uh give people if they want to get a hold of you websites everything watch just lay it all out right there sure first way on X Dan zalinsky 3 and then baseball Prospect Journal have a ton of content coming out between now and the start of the draft on Sunday we’ll have more mock drafts probably a podcast five player profiles coming up between now and then so just a lot of content coming between now and the draft and then obviously after the draft I’ll give my thoughts Recaps on the Brewers and other picks that stood out and then we’ll get ready for 2025 with content coming out the day after the draft ends and Dan next week let’s do a little draft recap what do you think of that we can get you on um at the end of the draft and talk a little bit what’s going on with the Milwaukee brewers brewers got several off days next week maybe we pick a day and we’ll get you on next week definitely always always For You Chuck anything you need Dan zinsky my man baseball Prospect journal.com draft dan the man has got the knowledge
Never enough pitchers is right. I wonder if there are good catchers available. Contreras will get paid, deservingly and maybe outside of wi.
Glad I tuned in. Nice information on Cooper Pratt, Mike Bouve, Brock Wilken, and others.
Is Vance Honeycutt related to the former pitcher, Rick Honeycutt?
The trade talk a couple of weeks ago was dealing Cooper Pratt for the Whitesox starter, Garrett Crochet.
Zielinski says, "He's going to end up going to college if I had to put any amount of money on it." This is said as negative thing. Lol, remember when going to college used to be considered good?
A guy that wasn’t mentioned that if he’s there the Brewers should absolutely go for, Christian Moore from Tennessee, he has great power and a good hit tool
Hope they can find another big guy like Brock Wilken. We have enough smallish fast guys with little power. Gotta get some bangers on the corners.
