team last year it has been the weakness of this team this year and over the month of July and a little bit before that really since that sweep well since the game after the Mets kicked the Rangers teeth in uh coming off of that sweep against the Seattle Mariners this offense has finally started to come to life key headers like Nathaniel low like leot deas like Jonah Heim as well have started to find their footing as has Wyatt Langford coming off of his Al rookie of the month award in June this entire offense is starting to finally figure things out at just the right time the Rangers took the first two games and won the series against the Angels they will need to take the third one they will need to take basically every single game from now until the All-Star break feels like it’s must win now the Rangers right now are on a five game winning streak if they win every game from now until the All-Star break will enter the All-Star break on a nine game winning streak which it’s going to be difficult it’s going to be difficult to go into Houston and sweep them as well as the Astros are playing right now um but at least getting two sweeps in a row getting a a six-game winning streak after you know that Series against the Padres that felt incredibly winnable with the Rangers didn’t take this series in Anaheim has felt fantastic for the Rangers especially with these key bats especially with the at bat of the night from Adas Garcia the guy who has been if not the coldest then probably the coldest Rangers hitter as of late the strikeouts have been way up the power has been non-existent the yet bats have been difficult to watch but over the last couple days there have been some signs of life from adults there have been a lot of hard- hit balls especially early on in this one and and shout out to Jamie Newberg who who saw this coming especially this game after talking after last night’s game Jamie was was writing and you know tweeting about how Okay adus is showing some signs of Life he’s having some better at bats and we we all know we all know the kind of hitter that Adas Garcia can be when he’s on a hot streak he can almost single-handedly carry your offense it’s a little bit of what he did in the ALCS um and just in that playoff run in general Adas was magnificent but Jamie saw this last night he’s like th this is him figuring it out he knew that this was about to happen and you know the first few at bats of the game he had a strikeout in the second inning of last night’s game then in the third inning he had a ground into a double play but an incredibly hard hit ball in fact all three of the balls that he put into play last night were hard hit not just hard hit but very hard hit I would say well maybe 100 miles hour is is the category for very hard hit balls actual hard hit balls the the threshold is 95 mph so in that third inning 11.7 mph off the bat 630 expected batting average but was right at the Fielder so it was a double play then a line out of 99.8 milph off the bat in the sixth inning had an expected batting average of 390 alas that was not a hit but what was a hit what was a classic Adas Garcia in the most classic Adas Garcia Way was his go-ahead home run in the eighth inning to give the Rangers a one-run lead that would be all they needed not just the fact that it was a go-ahead home run which he has had uh since 2021 when he became a full-time starting player this is from Jared Sandler last night um that he tweeted this out uh since 2021 adulas Garcia has hit 10 go-ahead home runs in the seventh inning or later which is tied for the most during that span 10 home runs 10 go ahead home runs in the seventh inning or later that is that is Adas Garcia we know that is the Adas Garcia we love and not to mention that goahead Homer his 17th of the season was his career 500th Major League hit congratulations to Adas for that felt amazing how bet and to do it in such a clutch way that is just that is who Adas Garcia is he is a guy who comes through in the big moments a guy who lives for the clutch a guy who is incredibly streaky and is incredibly good and extremely undervalued and I tell you the murmurings the Rumblings the frustrations with Rangers fans with Adas Garcia this year after that incredible start to the season and how much he’s cratered since the month of May it makes sense it it makes a little bit of sense but I feel like the the context and that the people clamoring for Adas Garcia to be traded right now to I don’t know open up an everyday spot for Evan Carter to you know they are also clamoring for trading Leo Taris so I don’t know what those kind of people are looking for if you’re trying to trade leote and adolis right now first off you’re you’re banking on uh well I don’t know what you’re banking on ad do you’re banking on Evan Carter to be guaranteed an everyday guy to be basically exactly what he was at the end of 2023 which is an incredibly Hye barst set you’re banking on him being healthy which we’re seeing now isn’t the case always he’s got now what is should be considered chronic back issues at 21 which is terrifying he also hasn’t proved that he can hit lefties at the big league level which I think eventually he will be able to with enough time and opportunities but still these are guys that are solid major league players at least average if for doas Garcia not average above average has been above average has been a multi-time Allstar has been an ALCS MVP doing it the biggest stage against the biggest and the best of the best and doing it when you need it the most those kinds of players are difficult difficult to come by and to develop your on your own there’s not a whole lot of guys that are just right there on the verge Dustin Harris has not taking that lead to show he’s you know going to be an everyday major leager like I kind of hoped he would this year you say the same thing about aona I I thought that this might be the year he kind of starts to put things all together that has not been the case now white Langford is for sure and above average you know Major League outfielder everyday player which we’ll talk about him in a second but these guys getting just average to above average Major Leaguers is difficult and not to mention if you’re trading them now at the at the bottom of their value this is this is a blanket statement for for every fan who wants to trade away so and so because they don’t like them they’re not doing well right now this is just the thing that bothers me the most about fans this is not just Rangers fans this is not just Baseball fans but sports fans in general at the you know of the professional teams saying oh why don’t we just trade our bad players for the good players and then we’ll be fine that’s not how this works just because if a guy is struggling on your team everybody else knows that you’re not going to pull one over on them saying oh actually oh you guys don’t don’t look at what he’s doing this year just look at what happened last year or whatever these are major league teams they know how good these players are they know much better than us of whether these these players who are trending down whether this is the actual falloff for the rest of time or if this is just a momentary lapse and selling off these players who are having bad season like a John Gray like or in the middle of a down you know moment month you know couple months whatever it is selling these guys off at the bottom of their value is the worst thing you can do because you will have to replace them with somebody and finding that somebody if they if that somebody was there they would have replaced them already so it’s you’re not going to get that replacement that’s immediately going to be better than them in a trade that’s for adolis that’s for you know L clerk that’s for John Gray who whoever the subject of your ey is at any given moment that is just my Spiel of the day but it is such a good feeling for doas Garcia to get that home run to get the Rangers to keep winning because right now it feels insane to say on July 10th every single game for the foreseeable future is lot of things broke really right for the Texas Rangers they won the World Series they had the most fickle Bullpen become absolutely lock down for a month at the most Cru spot and despite having an absolutely ravaged rotation of injuries you know missing ma sherzer for most of the Posies and missing Jacob De Grom for all the postseason and and not having you know starter John Gray I mean they still won the World Series but I think the best luck that the Rangers got maybe the best overall no I can’t say that winning the World Series the first World Series ever that has that has to be number one forever for all time but with going to be a close second and may end up looking like first close to first in the future is that not only Lottery luck to jump up from the seventh pick in the draft to the fourth pick but the luck of the Detroit Tigers picking Max Clark instead of white Langford in that draft so that the Rangers could SEL select white Langford with the fourth pick in last year’s draft now I think that last year heading into the draft if the Rangers had the number one pick I would have been really torn between going with Paul SK and Wyatt Langford and um well seems like the the Pittsburgh Pirates chose pretty well as as Paul SK has been one of the best pitchers in baseball from the second he’s gotten up but it it is pretty clear who that number two is right now uh in that draft class of the second best player maybe ending maybe ending up as the first best player because pitchers are so finicky um in terms of their health and especially when you throw 102 milph but why Langford what a year he has had since being drafted fourth overall by the Rangers just absolutely blazing through the minor leagues he has now played in 68 major league baseball games he has a 1.6 baseball reference War he has been now statistically according to baseball references D war and uh a plus defender or better than nothing Defender 0.1 D War so that is a positive technically as a guy who had massive massive concerns about his defense and offensively he’s got a 111 Ops plus he has been a menus on the base pass he is figuring it out on defense he is put together great at bats and now he’s the Rangers cleanup hitter I think he will stay in that spot supplanting Adas Garcia at least for the immediate future and he has been incredible now that 1.6 BW war in his first you know year first 365 days since being drafted that’s pretty darn good not only is it good it is great and it’s not only is it great but when you look at the Rangers past you know eight first round draft picks it is better than them combined yeah his 1.6 career baseball reference war in his first year since being drafted is higher than the career baseball reference for of the Rangers previous eight first round picks combined you may be saying Bryce how the heck is that possible you remember Josh Young is a Rangers first- round draft pick in that those last eight draft picks yeah I’m a little bit cherry picking there because uh Josh Young’s career baseball reference for is 3.0 uh which is nearly double what white lingford has done you kind of have to have some negatives in there which the Rangers do you look at Jack lier right now a negative 0.9 career baseball reference for in what four games not great Co win negative .5 Bubba Thompson negative 0.6 and then the cut off right before that the LA the eighth one is Chris C who has not made the major leagues so I’m a little bit cherry-picking there but still it kind of goes to show you how incredible Wyatt Langford has been the adjustments he’s made not only just putting together much much better at bats you know since the that’s a ball blank blank moment a few months ago uh he is hitting over 330 he has been absolutely on fire one of the Rangers best hitters heck one of the Rangers best players and it only was a matter of time for him to figure things out and be such a massive massive positive for the Rangers this season breaking out as a young player he has been absolutely everything the Rangers could have hoped him to be and he has been it so much faster than they ever could have possibly expected coming out of the draft another guy who has been much better than the Rangers possibly could have expected heading into this year has been Josh Smith snubbed from the All-Star team not only snubbed from the original Allstar selections which was a tough a tough ask there are a lot of really good third basem in the American League this year Well really two that I would say are comfortably better than him and rafhael Des and of course Jose Ramirez with the Cleveland Guardians both of them having exceptional years but so is Josh Smith he’s having an exceptional year offensively defensively he has been so important to this team and when it was announced that Rafel Des was going to be out for the All-Star game with a lingering issue that he was nursing I thought okay this is the time this is Josh Smith time frangers had two Allstars already both player selections both reserves and Marcus Simeon and Kirby Yates both deserved Marcus a little bit kind of coasting on reputation but there have been some years in the past where he has finished top three in MVP voting and has has not been an Allstar so maybe this is just kind of you know retribution um you know back pay if you will but still for the first you couple months of the Season until this you know until that Collision really with Adas Garcia he was absolutely every bit the All-Star and defensively he’s been one of the best players in baseball but Josh Smith not making it as a replacement over Jordan Westberg just really burns my britches you know just chaps my cheeks if you will because Josh Smith has been much better than Jordan westbr this year you want to look at batting average he’s got the edge there 296 versus 281 you want to look at on base percentage he’s got a massive Edge there 384 to 280 328 excuse me slugging percentage that’s where Jordan Westbrook has a bit of the edge Smith is slugging 457 versus 512 from Westberg but Ops Josh Smith at 8:42 to Westberg 840 Fang graphs War baseball reference War Josh Smith has the edge and last night you could tell he was pissed about the snubber he was pissed he had a three for three game a massive home run which is one of the weirder home runs not not saying that Josh Smith home runs are weird but doing it on 02 after two foul bun attempts is just my favorite kind of baseball weird I mean it kind reminds me the only other people who I think could do something like that foul off the first two pitches and then hit a home run it kind of makes me think of like maybe Joey Gallow trying to beat one of those extreme shifts like all right well I guess I’m not getting this bunt down let me just go in a massive Tater um but it is one of the uh more delightful and weird moments and seeing Cory Seer get walked intentionally twice ahead of him in this game one time for an RBI single one time for an out that would keep the Run from scoring um just so much disrespect to Josh Smith all in one day # Justice for Josh I don’t think Justice will be served Mr Pooky we see you though we respect you we know you should be an All-Star just like Ezekiel Durant last year probably should have been an All-Star was maybe having an even better offensive season than what Josh Smith has been doing in the first half this year but Smith has been doing it on an offense that has been carried by him he’s been their most consistent hitter most consistent position player this year and the Rangers would be completely out of it if not for Josh Smith this year and I have been incredibly frustrated to see him not get selected by that he is still an All-Star in our hearts still an Allstar in our minds maybe there will be some other opt out that will allow Josh Smith to actually make the All-Star team this year and play in the All-Star game but even if he isn’t one is a positive a couple of positive injury updates for you on the only two remaining injured starters on this I well Cody Bradford technically still a starter but whenever he comes back he will definitely be put in the bullpen but the Rangers got some good news on Tyler Mali and on Jacob deg Grom last night Tyler Mali threw in his second rehab outing he threw For The Frisco Ruff Riders as opposed to the uh about to say the Down East wood ducks that would be really funny seeing him with the Down East wood ducks but no he was not with the Round Rock Express he through and his second Rehab start went basically actually no exactly an identical line to no not exactly excuse me the first the first Rehab start Mali went two innings one hit zero walks zero runs zero earned runs two strikeouts this outing through a few more pitches through upwards of uh there we go uh couple more pitches than last last time a 30 32 pitches uh 23 of those for strikes two innings one hit two strikeouts sorry that was this one first one only one strikeout so Mali is looking a little bit better getting a little bit closer to getting back the target is still I believe the end of July although we’ll see if that ends up being the case I think the Hope was initially after the All-Star break so we’ve still got some time there before he is um you know behind the initial schedule timetable for his return but as long as he gets back I think that is the most important thing right now velocity was all the way up to 95 mph so that is a good thing to see for Tyler Mali who I think we tend to forget about because he has not thrown a single inning for the Rangers just yet but I think he is going to be a big addition to this rotation in 2025 and and hopefully a big addition for the back end of this season hopefully strengthening this starting rotation maybe strengthening the bullpen by sending I don’t know John Gray to the pen we we’ll talk more about that a little bit later on but the big big news even more so than Mal’s second Rehab start of the season is Jacob deg Grom throwing a 30 pitch bullpen in Anaheim he threw all fast balls and change UPS in this one he felt pretty darn good after that Bullpen he still has not thrown uh any breaking balls any sliders or curveballs that is when the problem happened last year coming back from injury it was was when he started adding the sliders to that Bullpen that is what ended up with the UCL injury that set him back all this time um so Bruce Boi said he felt good still a ways away this was the first time that he threw anything but fast balls and throwing 30 pitches in a bullpen session that’s good so he’s probably going to throw another Bullpen session with just fast balls and change UPS is my assumption Bruce Boi said we’re still a ways away so exactly what that means I’m not entirely sure the initial Target date was sometime in August whether that was early August or mid August there was never really any clarification on that um so he’s still a little ways away from facing live hitters and I was having a discussion with somebody last night on Twitter I forget exactly who it was saying I don’t know the best case scenario is hoping for you know him being built up to four Innings by the time the reinders get to the World Series and I get being conservative on Jacob deg Grom and you know having no hope but I don’t think that’s the best case scenario I think for me the best case scenario is right now I’m eyeing you know maybe the 20th or 25th of him you know getting to the major leagues I think if he got if everything goes completely right everything is perfect he is fully healthy everything is looking absolutely amazing than him being built up to 50 60 pitches by you know uh the 20th to 25th of August I think think is is the best case scenario I don’t think he’s you know coming up I don’t think the Rangers are going to rush him by any means they’re going to take every precaution with him because he is again we forget because he’s been hurt so much and you know it’s fair to forget a little bit but he is the best pitcher in baseball when he’s healthy he’s incredible he’s been nothing but incredible for basically a decade basically his entire career he has been so incredibly good and I think he could really really help this team but there is not a whole lot more Replacements coming in terms of the Rangers roster I mean in terms of starting pitchers it’s just m and deg Grom and deg Grom there’s always the big question mark of if he comes back this year at all Mali I think is more of a certainty to come back this year and hopefully come back before the calendar flips to August that’d be nice um but right now this basically is the team and if it ol Garcia starts getting hot and we keep getting contributions from you know the entire depth of this lineup from Nathaniel low from Jonah Heim who by the way was supposed to be dhing in last night’s game was scratched with neck stiffness so Andrew kizner got the start there hopefully that doesn’t continue hopefully he can get back in this lineup uh for the finale of this series that would be very very nice for the reindeers because they need his Bat and kizner uh God love him has been an offensive black hole this year just absolutely has especially when you compare it to what Jaheim has done lately that would be nice but this this is basically the team I mean there’s Josh Young and Evan Carter coming back but you know there are five guys that are contributors and for the amount of guys that have been out for so much of this year to say oh there’s only you know five guys that have be added to this roster as the injury reinforcements that’s doesn’t feel like a whole lot I mean you move Josh Young in the everyday lineup and then maybe Josh Smith is is dhing but then when Evan Carter comes back you have some you know questions about what you’re going to do then um because Wyatt Langford has proven that he has to be an everyday player because he’s that good same with Josh Smith um Leo Taris has been that good to be an everyday player same with Adas Garcia for his career and we’ll see whenever Evan Carter comes back I haven’t seen him rehabbing uh at all in actual Minor League games just yet so have no idea what the timetable is for his return feel like I’ve gotten no updates there in weeks um but this is basically the team this is this is the this is the guys you’re going to have to roll with this is a squad that I feel comfortable with that I think they feel comfortable with of being able to go on the kind of insane Miracle run that they’re going to need to be going on to keep themselves in contention to keep themselves from being sellers at the deadline I mean they are even with this six five-game winning streak hopefully six by the time we wake up tomorrow um but right now there’s still seven games out of the third wild card spot there’s still the Rays Astros and Royals in between them and that third wild card spot in Boston but thankfully the Mariners are starting to wobble a little bit the Rangers are five and a half games back from them um but last night they just put a whooping on the Padres who were a pretty darn good team the Astros are just as hot as the Rangers over the last 10 games both of them seven and three um and this is not going to be a kalk that Series in Houston is going to be absolutely massive for the Rangers absolutely massive they need the sustained winning streak they need everybody on this team to contribute and right now they’ve gotten some big contributions from guys like Max Scherzer who it wasn’t at his best last night but giving this team that depth going six and two-thirds innings was absolutely massive gray has started to come way back down to Earth but he’s still doing enough he’s not been horrendous as of late and that’s what the Rangers need they’re starting pitching to be now that the offense is finding its footing the bullpen is still held up I mean you look at this rotation of yaldi Sherer Heeney gray Lorenzen this is a not only solid rotation that’s a good rotation then you look at the Bullpen you got your high-end guys of Kirby Gates who’s been one of if not the best closers in baseball you’ve got as your probably fourth choice High leverage relever Josh spores that’s fantastic you also got David Robertson who’s been incredible they also added a little bit of help there with Daniel Robert DFA the guy who I had a lot of Hope for this year in Antoine Kelly but uh this is the team this is the squad these are the guys that are going to bat for each other every single day this is the team that has this kind of run and this the team that went on this kind of Run for the first half last year and all the way through the playoffs to the World Series and through it as the Champions just last year they have by no means played like they expected to like they hoped to like most everyone thought they would this year the weaknesses have been strengths and the Straits have been weaknesses of this team and if the strengths from last year start to come back like the offense and the rotation can still be at least average to above average the bullpen can stay incredibly locked down which curates absolutely incredible talk more about him on tomorrow’s show getting his 14th save of the Season having the second lowest erra in all baseball I mean this is the team that’s capable of it they haven’t shown it they haven’t played up to it this year and so the doubts and the frustration and the you know calls for selling th those were logical responses to what this team had done this year but logic doesn’t always play the part when it comes to these these hitters these players these pitchers this whole organization that you know logically has seen what they’ve done this year and knows that they’re better than that they’ve got some rational belief in themselves and they should coming off of a World Series Championship where no one expected them to even compete for the AL West this is a team that needs a be Miracle run and this is the team that I think has got a miracle run in him five straight wins is not enough but it is a great sign this team might just be capable of pulling themselves back into this thing after a really really rough last couple months that’s going to
