If Dean Evason Lands in Columbus, will Freddy Gaudreau Follow? #minnesotawild #mnwild #lockedonwild

on today’s episode of lockdown wild Dean everon one of the finalists for the Columbus Blue jacket’s job what will that mean for a potential Patrick l trade and Freddy [Music] G you’re locked on wild day all summer long visit fanduel.com to get started on today’s episode of lockdown wild we will discuss Dean everon being a finalist for the Columbus Blue Jack its job but there are some wrinkles to this that would have to be resolved before Dino could potentially head to Columbus obviously we know that’s got some Freddy gdo implications that could mean that a Patrick l a trade is happening after all we’ll talk about that the Dallas Stars with a bold direction for how their fans will be able to watch their games this upcoming season we’ll talk about that and we’ll update you on where things stand with the Diamond Sports Group and have you seen a team that has gone through more of a seismic off season than pwl Minnesota after winning the Walter cup more news out of the pwl today as three assistant coaches for pwl Minnesota have been relieved of their duties we’ll set the timeline for that for you as well but uh thank you to everybody for tuning in here for today it is great to be with you my name is Seth topal your daily Minnesota Wild Insider for those of you joining us for the first time today we welcome you and we’re glad to have you here but I love these episodes especially in the offseason where you can put a few topics together and just rapid fire through them let’s get to the bullet points The Cliff Notes if you were taking a test back during your uh your college days give me those cliff notes of uh of what’s going on and we’re going to start with something that has gained steam over the the last couple of days that obviously has some potential Minnesota Wild implications Aaron portzline who covers the NHL for the athletic and is also an NHL Network correspondent as well had this to say over the last couple of days the Columbus Blue Jackets are moving along in their coaching search but there’s something to consider the believed candidates Todd mclen Todd mclen Dean Evon and Jay Woodcraft all have contracts with their former clubs that run through next season so potentially there are two negotiations for those candidates unless Columbus wants to play pay full Freight next season which would be5 a half million for mlen $2 million roughly for Dean Evon and Jay Woodcraft GM Don woodell must negotiate a salary that’s acceptable to the former club which pays the remaining balance they must approve before the coach is allowed to take the new job once the Columbus Blue Jackets and the former Club agree on the 2024 2025 portions the next negotiation is directly between Columbus and the coach for the remaining years on the contract wadell is known to get salary requests from candidates before final interviews so this stage should move quickly that was yesterday today told this is Aaron portsl again told Todd mlen is out of the running to be the next Columbus Blue Jackets coach between Columbus mclen and his former Club the Los Angeles Kings in agreement on a multi-year contract could not be reached it’s possible Columbus circles back with an adjusted offer so at this moment it appears as though it’s down to Dino and Jay Woodcraft and I don’t know about you but the type of team that Columbus is that just feels like a spot for H for Dean they’ve and and that’s not that doesn’t have anything to do with um that doesn’t have anything to do necessarily with the roster construction of the Columbus Blue Jackets it just that doesn’t feel like a Jay Woodcraft destination to me it feels like the blue J jackets are going to want somebody that gets along with the players but is going to want them to perform to a particular standard and honestly we don’t we don’t really care uh necessarily about how these how this goes for um for the Blue Jackets all we want is for a destination for Freddy we know that was a huge reason that the wild felt comfortable enough to give Freddy gdo a lengthy extension uh because Dean played he played Freddy Aon played him in all key situations faceoffs uh penalty kill power play uh overtime shootouts uh it it just he was a player that uh Dean Had No Reservations about playing uh no matter the situation and so it would seem likely that if Freddy guo is indeed one of Dean evon’s guys that he would want to go play for his coach so to speak and this is where the Patrick l conversation comes back because as Michael Russo said on KFAN the last time he was on filling in for Dan barrero said the wild want to make a Patrick line a trade happen they want to do it but there are too many non-movable contracts there are too many trade protection contracts to be able to do that and you look at the situation here if you’re Freddy gudo you have I’m sure noticed that the production has and the minutes have dropped since John Hines took over that was one of the first things John Hines did when he took over as head coach of the Minnesota Wild is it’s like okay John who is your go-to Center who’s your go-to guy and he’s like I got jel Ericson e that’s my guy that’s the one that I need um and so if given the opportunity even if Columbus is not on is not one of the teams that good would approve a trade to you think he’s GNA say no if Dean goes to Columbus ends up being the head coach there you think he’s going to say no to that and then all of a sudden that is one piece of the puzzle out of the bottom six that is gone that would be a way to eat two million of that deal and so now you are just having to try to make $6 million you’re just having to try to play around with six million dollar Columbus is in need of a goalie to say the least they probably need more like three of them they’ve got Elvis M linin but he’s 30 he’s been uh he’s been inconsistent throughout his career I’m telling you folks I I’ve been pretty adamant that I just am not super enthused about the potential to get Patrick l because it’s 8.7 million per year is he a talented player yes does he have injury history yes does he help you on both sides of the ice not particularly so I I have my reasons for not wanting this to happen but between the two who offers you more during the course of a season it’s it’s Patrick l for sure and even if they don’t go after Patrick l because it is um you know there there’s just too many moving Parts too much that you would have to do in order to make it work because from a center perspective you’ve got Adam fanelly you’ve got sha Monahan you’ve got Boone Jenner you’ve got Shan Kali you’ve got Gavin Brindley Columbus is pretty good from a center perspective but I mean dean is not gonna he’s not gonna Bo at getting his guy back if this is indeed how this plays out so if Dean ends up being announced as the Columbus Blue Jackets head coach don’t be surprised if the wild at least have a a discussion to try to again not necessarily make a Patrick l trade work but to at least get Freddy gdo back to a spot where he can go be Dean evon’s guy again unless Dean is gonna turn to Shawn Monahan and say hey you’re my guy Dean and Freddy gdo have history it’s like a father son relationship I’m going to be shocked if they don’t want to try to make that happen again so we’ll keep an eye on it but it sounds like there is some uh there’s some steam to to dino heading to Columbus we’ll transition from that to the Dallas Stars making a bold choice for how their fans are going to be able to watch their games next season we’ll talk about that and the latest in the Kyle so we got a crossover coming up for you here uh for tomorrow’s episode of lockdown wild we also will be looking to get a crossover lined up with every other even the Eastern Conference every other host of locked on NHL shows in what we’re going to be calling the uh great locked on wild road trip every single host of every other team throughout lock On’s NHL Wing so stay tuned for that that should be fun uh for the uh the month of August back to the conversation here the Dallas Stars took a bold step earlier this week uh couple tweets for you one from uh Donovan on Twitter powergate 92 um this appears to have gone under the radar Diamond B Sports has filed with the bankruptcy on July 3rd to reject its broadcast agreement with the Dallas Stars that is the second NHL team diamond in B Sports has lost this week so that was on July 3D not even a week later Shan Shapiro in his uh slapshots um slapshots hockey.com the Dallas Stars have left TV and are going all in on free inm market streaming and I’m going to read you some Snippets from Sean’s article if you live in the Dallas Stars TV Market it’ll be free to watch the team for the next seven seasons the stars are also leaving terrestrial television it’s one of the most fascinating turns we’ve seen as NHL teams have left the regional Sports Network’s model behind on Monday morning the Stars announced the creation of Victory plus a new direct to Consumer platform that will stream live games in Market starting during the 2024 2025 season for a clarification point the Stars TV Market consists of all of Texas Oklahoma Louisiana and Arkansas while other teams have left rsns Regional Sports networks in the past two seasons the stars are the first going all in on the streaming and the free element the Florida Panthers for example left the Bal branded networks last week and worked out an over theair TV deal with scripts which will be in conjunction with an in-market streaming platform that is yet to be unveiled the Vegas golden nights and then Arizona Coyotes did something similar with scripts during the 20232 24 season with in Market streaming platforms costing a subscription fee to users it is a bold move by Dallas and one that the rest of the league is going to closely watch because the stars are going against all traditional thinking here RSN contracts typically accounted for $35 million per season for NHL teams some higher some lower so the stars are betting on making up that type of Revenue on a completely free service with zero cost to the consumer the stars have signed a seven-year deal with a parent Media Company Incorporated apmc to make the deal work apmc is the media company behind dude perfects direct to Consumer Channel and the success and growth of that brand which happens to be located near the Stars headquarters helped Stars president Brad Alberts feel confident a free product could make Financial sense the Stars will have to sell their own advertisement and work directly with sponsors but they also expect overall viewership to go up duh between cord cutting and carriage disputes between B branded networks it became very hard to find stars games on television in the Dallas Fort Worth area the past two years Alberts has called this the most difficult business problem he’s faced in his career and the stars have been working on an eventual divorce with Bal Sports branded networks for 18 months now as noted earlier there is no TV element to this deal that is going to be one of the early challenges the Stars will face with this new direct to consumer product to watch a game you have to have the app on your device or smart TV while the Stars might try to find a minor deal for a handful of over-the-air games you will not be able to flip through channels and find a Stars game like you could with balet Sports Southwest if you had a TV provider that carried the network it also makes it more difficult to find stars games in sports bars and restaurants putting the games on TV in the restaurant is no longer as simple as asking for a bartender to turn on a channel those establishments themselves will now have to download Victory plus and commit a screen to it Albert said finding ways to get Victory plus into restaurants and bars is going to be part of the roll roll out of the product but admits that this is one of the few things he wrestled with when figuring out a solution with apmc on the flip side the stars now own all of their own rights all of their own rights for everything under the old format the Stars couldn’t live stream a scrimmage or even a practice without permission from the B Branded Network anything done live had to go through the rights holder the stars are now their own rights holder they can do what they want for any non National TV broadcast and Albert said the Stars will have to make sure they take full advantage of that and work on creating as much content as possible his hope is that Victory plus is also a service that connects with out of Market Stars fans who won’t be who won’t be able to stream games those will be still be on ESPN plus but we’ll have access to additional team content that they couldn’t have that couldn’t have been created before again other teams are watching this closely Alberts told Shan Shapiro that other NHL teams have engaged in conversations with apmc as well and have reached out to Dallas to learn more about how they are going all in on a streaming free product I got to tell you folks as much as I just do not want to give the Dallas Stars any credit whatsoever this now there there will be some things there will be some things that need to be ironed out but at least on the surface level it appears as though the Dallas Stars have gotten a lot of things right number one the ability to be the rights holder for all of their own content that creates massive opportunities think about this from a wild perspective you know we’ve got development Camp going on right now uh because the Minnesota Wild do not own their own rights the wild are not able to do a ton with that you know we we have seen uh in the preseason we’ve seen games streamed um on the Minnesota Wild YouTube channel if the wild followed a similar model you would be able to see broadcasts of development Camp broadcasts of preseason games this just opens up a ton of doors the other thing that is so great about it is it’s free yes that only applies to in Market but it’s free and that I think is the thing that so many of these teams are missing think of how many businesses are going to jump at the opportunity to be a part of this because more people will be watching we we have companies have lost sight of the number one thing that should be a focal point for everything that they do from a broadcast standpoint is to try to get the games to the most amount of people in the least difficult way possible and so Bravo Dallas Stars I’m excited to see how this T how this plays out because this it seems like there was a lot of good thought put into this and that this is something that could legitimately lead to um a lot of possibilities going forward and as somebody who creates content myself that’s the first spot that I went is having a team that now owns their um their rights opens up a lot of possibilities now it’s not as simple for the Minnesota Wild because they are still a Diamond Sports property and well how’s that going uh couple of uh Snippets to read you uh from Chip Scoggins who had a sit down with Dave St Peter that made its way into the um the Star Tribune here are some quotes from that article um on the Diamond Sports Front it looks like the blackout and that blackout is referring to the fact that many fans unless you are watching on um Charter Spectrum fubo or um Direct TV those are the only spots in which you can watch Minnesota Twins games right now it looks like the blackout will continue through July another bankruptcy hearing involving Diamond Sports is scheduled for July 29th Dave St Peter said he is not terribly optimistic that a resolution might happen before then St Peter said that the hearing could be an inflection point either with Comcast and or with maybe freeing up the ability for us to introduce a direct to Consumer option in the market for the last couple months of the regular season that is certainly the Minnesota Twins hope uh here’s another quote from ESPN talking more about that hearing a confirmation hearing is scheduled for July 29th and 30th at which point a bankruptcy judge could determine whether Diamond which runs the regional Sports networks for 38 MLB NBA and NHL teams under the name Bal Sports will move forward as a business or shut down entirely it’s a decision that could expedite drastic changes in a rapidly evolving media landscape and one that will have a major impact on MLB’s strong desire strongly held desire to place media rights under a national umbrella now it’s a little different from a Major League Baseball perspective because Major League Baseball is the streaming rights holder for all the teams that does not exist in the NHL and so let’s say on one case let’s say the judge and Diamond Sports has had in my opinion too many instances to try to get their bleep together they’ve had one too many of those for my liking and so let’s say this judge let’s say this judge says I’m not going to give you guys any more time to try to work your way through this that’s it that’s done and let’s say Diamond Sports is dissolved as an entity here’s how I think this will happen now it could go a couple of ways we’re in July right now so August September so you got two months to try to put something together um for this upcoming season which I don’t know the time I don’t know the time frame for how long it takes to get these sorts of things put together it would either be in my opinion it would either be that the NHL in the Minnesota Wilds case if Diamond Sports dissolves the NHL would I think push to um to control the right for this season and it would be a subscription type service um that you would pay for and you’d be able to watch Minnesota Wild games now would it be local in Market Regional there’s a lot that still needs to be decided uh as to how this proceeds but again I bring you to the Crux of this issue the Dallas Stars realized that the objective should be to get the games in as many households as you can you can make money up you can make money up on Advertising you don’t have to necessarily you don’t have to charge people an arm and a leg to watch the games so how that plays out how that impacts the Minnesota Wilds going forward we’ll find out more at the end of the month and I think I think after that hearing I’m going to try to get some somebody in that is extremely well versed in this because it’s one thing to read articles that others have put together it’d be another thing entirely to have somebody who’s kind of on the inside of these types of negotiations to be able to tell you here’s how this will play out so I’ll work on that for the end of July um into August to see if we can’t get somebody on to uh to try to give us a little clearer picture as to how this plays out uh to finish Today’s Show we are going to talk about more pwhl Minnesota drama uh there’s more that happens today uh in regards to pwhl Minnesota and so we will discuss three assistant coaches having been relieved of their duties um by PW by the pwl that’s on the way as we finish today’s episode of lockdown wild after this today’s episode of lockedown wild is also brought to you by FanDuel folks you know me I love sports I love them so much that I just don’t want them to ever stop but with the Stanley Cup playoffs with the NBA Playoffs we we just with them in both in the rearview mirror we just don’t have as many games as we used to which means the sports don’t typic typically Sports the way that I would prefer they do but FanDuel lets you keep the sports going whenever you want all you have to do is open the app and dream up bets anytime you are in the mood and this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily that’s right there is something for everyone every day all summer long so head over to fanduel.com and start making the most out of your summer FanDuel official sports betting partner of Major League Baseball final segment of today’s episode of Locked on wild once again we thank you for making locked on wild your first listen each and every day little bit of a programming note for you for next week uh I am going to be in the early part of the week uh I’m going to be camping up uh towards up towards South Dakota right on the border don’t worry we will still have episodes for you but what I’m going to do we are going to turn next week into Prospect week Prospect week here on lockdown wild in which we will go through and do what I call organizational depth charts who are filling particular positions what can we expect for a timetable who are some names that maybe we don’t hear about as much that could be trying to uh be a piece of the conversation uh at least at least from a uh Prospect perspective full road map for the whole week plotted out should be a lot of fun um and so um that will be the early part of the week it’ll be the whole week but the early part of the week uh getting those ironed out so if there is anything big that happens um in the the first half of the week we’ll we’ll recap it fully um when uh when I return and don’t worry we’ll still have an episode with Alex on Monday too um so content doesn’t stop even with the offseason in full swing we uh we just continue to um we just continue to make it happen we got to talk about pwhl Minnesota though because there is more uh drama unfolding here today uh Jess Meyers who covers the Minnesota Wilds and hockey at Large especially from a college perspective but just from an at large perspective at the rink live more pwhl Minnesota turnover as three coaches are fired the Walter Cup champions dismissed an assisant coach their goalie coach and a skills consultant this week in what increasingly appears to be a con uh consolidation of Power by Head Coach Ken CLE I’ll read you a snippet and then we’re going to talk about the time timeline because I I don’t know if I have ever seen a team go from winning the championship for that sport to just what continues to be like a like we’re gonna have to put this on the RoR scale if this continues much longer just with how seismic this offseason has been for pwhl Minnesota so here’s what uh here’s what Jess writes and again this is at the rink live Jess Myers uh just posted today pwhl Ina’s efforts to repeat as Walter Cup champions in 2025 will be guided by a vastly different cast of characters behind the scenes as three more key figures in their title run from last season were fired on Monday July 9th the rink live confirmed that assistant coach Jake B rski uh Jake barovsky uh goalie coach Brennan poder and skills consultant Johnny cyel were all dismissed from their roles with the team on Monday according to a that contacted the rink live the fired Trio of coaches was among a group of pwhl Minnesota employees that expressed support for since fire general manager Natalie darwitz in what increasingly appears to have been a power struggle between her and head coach Ken CLE in addition to coaching the team going forward CLE has been in the acting general manager role since darwitz was dismissed pwhl officials have acknowledged that they knew of the ongoing internal Strife between darwitz and CLE prior to the pwl playoffs in April League officials sat down with several members of the team staff and players to get their Insight on the differences of opinion I told them Ken is never receptive to any sort of suggestions that he is extremely arrogant one former pwhl Minnesota employee told the rank live on the condition of anonymity have you ever heard of a coach telling people to not come on the ice for practice because you are taking time away from the important girls that are playing why do you think the players are retiring pwhl Minnesota forwards Sophia cunan and Britain Fleming announced their retirement following the 2024 season which ended with Minnesota defeating pwl Boston in five games for the inaugural league title darwitz who put together the team and is credited with things like securing XL Energy Center as their home Rank and Tria rank their practice facility was fired just days after the team’s Championship celebration attended by thousands of fans another source who was formerly part of the pwhl Minnesota organization said the latest firings appear to be CLE consolidating his control of the team Ken’s got the keys to the Ferrari now they said but uh Bovi worked closely with the DAR with darwitz on the Women’s Hockey coaching staffs at Hamlin University and the Minnesota golfers prior to his work as an assistant coach for pwhl Minnesota last season pods has worked with Minnesota state man and is currently the men’s hockey goalie coach for the Gophers which he did last season in addition to his work with the pro women’s team the coaching staff changes have not yet been announced by pwl Minnesota or the league office as of Tuesday Morning photos of bosski and poder were still on the team’s official website so let’s let me let me just go through the timeline quickly of how this played out so you have Ken CLE who previously before Natalie darwitz was announced as general manager he interviewed for the GM job and the head coach job didn’t get either uh I forget the name of the coach for pwhl Minnesota but he stepped down 10 days before the season started and so Ken CLE came in as head coach after having been passed on for the GM spot there was as Jess laid out there was a power struggle that happened throughout the course of the season and this is what happens when a league owns teams and teams don’t own themselves is the league made the decision to move Natalie darwitz out of the GM’s role and it from how all of this has played out it’s uh it’s pretty evident that the league wants Ken CLE in this position as opposed to Natalie darwitz but again like I said the fact that the the league owns the teams means the league is going to make decisions in the best interest of the league as opposed to the best interest of the team and there’s a lot of there’s a lot of stuff from this that we still don’t know that will probably never come out because I’m sure ndas are involved similar to uh some of the things that happened for the Minnesota Wild this past season and so I just I don’t know that I have ever seen a quicker tumble at least from a PR perspective than what is currently happening for pwhl Minnesota after winning the Walter they won the Walter cup the championship for the pwhl and it’s more disappointing too because it felt like the league had some great footing after a great inaugural season and now you’re just going backwards with all this stuff so the only thing I can say with certainty is that this situation is far from over and so we’ll just uh we’ll just keep an eye on it I guess and uh and see how things play out here um as the season gets closer but as I mentioned um in the inaugural or in the initial kind of reveal of lockdown wild 2.0 pwhl coverage is going to be much more um much more regular uh going into next season as will be high school college and both Iowa teams a L and ECHL it’s not going to it’s not going to take away from what we have done with Minnesota Wild coverage it is going to be in addition to above and beyond what we currently do so that’s kind of the overall image that I have with how um lockdown wild 2.0 will uh will play out as we move into the fall but thanks for tuning in to today’s episode everybody I appreciate every single one of you that takes the time to watch or listen to these episodes uh throughout your week I know especially in the summer things get busy and so I appreciate you taking some time out of your day to tune in as we keep you up to date with all things down only Minnesota Wild related but uh the state of hockey too we got you covered on every angle all offseason long so make sure to hit the like button if you’re watching on YouTube if you are listening in the car on your laptop on your phone uh we uh we appreciate your support make sure to leave us a review if you are so inclined uh that helps with the expanse in the reach of the show as well we’ve got new episodes for you every Monday through Friday as part of the locked on podcast Network

On today’s episode of Locked on Wild, we start by discussing Dean Evason being a finalist for the Columbus Blue Jackets head coaching job. We discuss the hurdles Columbus is having to work through with the candidates still in the running because they are all under contract for the upcoming season by their former teams. We discuss what this could mean for a potential Patrik Laine trade and Freddy Gaudreau’s future in Minnesota. We move to the Dallas Stars breaking free of Diamond Sports Group and launching their own free streaming platform for in market viewing and what this could mean for other teams looking to do the same. We discuss the latest in the Diamond Sports Group bankruptcy situation and why we could have more of a clear picture as to what will happen this year by the end of the month. We finish by discussing the latest drama with PWHL Minnesota as an assistant coach and two staff members are let go in continued fallout from the Ken Klee/Natalie Darwitz power struggle.
