Who Are The Big Winners And Losers From The San Jose Sharks Offseason?

who are the big winners and losers from the San Jose Sharks off seon we’ll dive into it you’re locked on sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hello welcome to locked on sharks the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area my name is JD young caretaker at The Reef also the co-host of Western Conference Tuesdays on the lockon NHL channel want to thank you for making lockd on sharks your first listen probably part of the lock on network recover your team every day if you want to be an everyday or all you have to do is just follow wherever you get Podcast or you can watch on YouTube as well and today we’re going to be kind of looking at uh some of the off season’s winners and losers be based on the moves that the sharks made in free agency and the draft um and you know with every move like somebody is going to either gain from it or be hurt by the position that um that they’re going to be currently in so we’re going to look at which players I think had you know benefited from it which players I think maybe their their jobs or their lives are going to be a little bit tougher here um going forward so before we into that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase terms apply so we have to start I think with with the biggest offseason winner um for the Sharks and um guy going into his second full season with San Jose and that that’s William eckan right um and I think he is the shark’s biggest uh winner of the off season because he is going to be in a much better position this year no matter kind of what happens with the line combinations and who plays with who so as a reminder going to last year right we we knew it was going to be it was supposed to be some combination of purle grandland uh Logan Couture Nico serum down the middle right we got zero games with all four of those guys active um Couture missed the entire season but six games uh hurdle played until about you know the All-Star break and then he got hurt and then he got traded to the Vegas golden knights so the Sharks were really really hurting at center right I mean you had Luke cunan playing Center you had uh NCO stman was a natural centerman but you know he was playing Center um Ryan Carpenter who was supposed to be on the Sharks Al or on the Barracuda All Season kind of being the veteran guy down there um he ended up playing you know majority of the season with the sharks they had to trade for Jack suika um you know even William ewin got a a spin at Center at at one point and didn’t you know we really didn’t see we saw Ean play well when he played with hurdle um took a dip when he was having to kind of play play his Center position and kind of play with some players who you know frankly just aren’t at the same skill level as him and then at the end of the season when he’s playing when we saw the Len line formed with granin and zerin he was playing some of his best hockey before the season you know finish right and you think of the hattrick of course against St Louis like you know just in general like eek was playing great hockey at the end of the season fast forward to this year right you’re looking at so here are the potential guys on the roster who guys who I think are like locks to play this year or most likely going to play um who have played center before um Mel granin M celebrini Will Smith I know celebrini and Smith are both rookies and who you know who knows the plan with him if they’re going to play start out at Center or if they’re going to start out at Wing if I had to guess right I still think celebrini starts at Center and then Will Smith starts at wing and but they’ve talked about Will Smith even playing Center right um Alex wenberg who the Sharks acquired in free agent or signed in free agency um you have Logan Couture who of course um you know we’re we’re not really holding our breath with him we’re kind of kind of Wai and see but um then that also that doesn’t include niik surm um Luke cunan uh you know Barkley goodro like there’s just a lot better flexibility with players who play center and um the sharks are going to be able to potentially run out two like actually skill lines as their top lines even if it is the L line as one line and if you want to run out like a celebr to Foley Clint C or wiberg or who whomever right um no matter what like that they’re going to be able to pair skilled players with skilled players before um how often would you see eckan doing cool stuff creating something and then just the guys with him not realizing it in time or just may not able to kind of keep up with him skill-wise and I think we’re going to see that pop from meckon this season just because of the amount of skill um that is in the top six and yes I know Smith and celebrating our rookies right we’ll see how Tyler toley you know his transition I still think he’s a walking 25 to 30 goal scorer for you until he basically stops doing that um and maybe Mel granin like takes a step back with you know a guy who’s kind of maybe struggle with injuries maybe he takes a step like there’s a lot of variations but the sharks are just more insulated to deal with some of those issues because of the added skill right adding Will Smith Tyler to Foley um Alex wenberg uh and of course Maan celebrini that just raises the the level of skill that is on the Sharks and I think ecin is going to be the biggest winner um going into this season I expect ekin to really push for like 70 you know I mean 70 75 points if everyone kind of plays up to the level we’re expecting so in Reverse with all this added skill one guy who’s you know I think hurt a lot by this offseason is Thomas bordalo right and bordalo kind of spent the year playing um at the end of the season playing third line minutes um got a lot of production on the power play playing with the Lun line and then Ken Addison um you know on the the shark power play that was surprisingly good at the end of the season but with all this skill who and Thomas Boro of course part of the previous regime in the 2020 draft you know it’s he’s going to be have to come into training camp um hit and hit the ground running because of there’s just more skilled players on the roster and he is going to have to fight for his spot and even looking at the players that they’ve added in the bottom six you know grundstrom um you have uh Ty delandria Barkley good that’s like an entire line right there that they’ve basically added in the bottom six um and we’ll talk more about this here in a little bit more but right where does bordalo fit in from here right he’s maybe not good enough to play in the top six or like who spot is he taking in the top six and then like I know you can can play more than you know one or two good lines but there’s just so many guys and I don’t know if he fits into what the sharks are trying to kind of put together right now so um I I think his off seon I think he’s the player who got hurt the most you can also put kind of Daniel Gan in this bucket but I still think Gan has uh I still thought Gan was going to be playing AHL games this year um and you know maybe gets a call up at some point later on and I I think they also provide much different skill sets right guian is a much more kind of pure sniper um player I think uh than than Boro Boro does score goals but they’re just kind of different different players and I think uh for gusin like there’s still a pathway if he can just kind of be a like absolute sniper and kind of play off some of of his linemates there’s still a path for him to play games um but I think that path at the beginning of the season is kind of closed right now for for I think for Boro it’s going to be really really tough for him to crack this lineup um unless he comes into camp and it just kind of knocks everyone’s socks off and there’s a chance he could do that right um there’s right but you know and I think he’s played much better last year in the NHL than he did in the AHL but still when you add the pieces that the sharks have if if they had just gotten celebrini or Smith then you could maybe kind of see a pathway for Boro but bringing celini and Smith at the same time as well as the other moves with wenberg and with Tyler tley I think bordo’s path to making the roster out of training camp is just gonna be really really tough so I think uh he was the guy I think who got hurt the most um from the the Sharks offseason moves so uh we’ll dig into some other forwards who I think uh with the offseason moves probably saw their their stock dip a little bit um or could be kind of you know maybe facing a different type of role uh so we’ll get to that here in just one second passion drive and patience the formula for winning championships is also a keeps your ride or die alive eBay Motors is everything you need to maintain your vehicle and leveled up to Peak Performance supercharges roof rexs exhaust kits LED as customers all right so eckan Boro um pretty easy cases for for why those guys you know in elin’s case uh has to be smiling back home in Sweden right now Boro probably uh maybe hitting the gym a little bit extra uh maybe a little bit extra motivation with some of the moves that the sharks made so um two guys here who I’m going to kind of lump together um who maybe saw their roles change um or kind of maybe a forgotten guy and that’s Giovanni Smith uh and Nico Sturm right and you look at what the Sharks again doing this off season bringing in uh trading for tidal indria young player uh kind of in that bottom six you know play some intensity he’s gonna have a little bit of a scoring pop right um claiming Barkley goodro uh we know you know why bark wo was brought here uh helped protect the children um teach them how to play the right way um you know he’s gonna kill penalties do all that that stuff right and he’s here for the next three seasons with this contract which is uh I don’t want to say unmovable but at this point it’s probably he’s probably goingon to be here for at least two and a half Seasons right um you know then trading for Carl grundstrom um again another kind of heavy bottom six forward uh who’s going to you know bring a little bit of a scoring pop as well um but again another kind of big heavy forward for to help kind of protect protect the children and you look at Giovanni Smith right who missed a ton of last year because of injuries um you know and and got came back at the end of the season um of course but like you know he’s already 26 he’s got a very he’s only making $800,000 um this year you know he played 36 games last year he had four a goal three assists and four points um with 40 penalty minutes in 36 games um he feels like a guy who is probably fighting for his roster spot and um is going to at some point end up on on the Barracuda here um I know this you know very cheap contract $800,000 um maybe a team wants to take a flyer on him to to help kind of fill out their bottom six but I just think that the where the Sharks invested their money invested their picks right you traded for Ty linger and you gave him a cont you know $1.3 million contract right you traded for Carl grundstrom um you gave him a you know uh T sorry TI and gave you know was that two years at 1.3 uh grundstrom you traded for him and gave him two years at 1.8 um like you you you’re investing more into those guys who kind of play a very similar role um as Giovani Smith so yeah for Giovanni Smith you’re probably gonna be playing on the Barracuda this year and if there’s major injuries when it comes to guys like runstrom and dandre like like that’s where you’re you know you basically kind of got your got replaced uh because you couldn’t stay healthy last year and um yeah there’s just I think more guys in the bottom six here that kind of fill the same role so um I’m yeah I expect I think he he was a big loser from this off season um and then Nico Sturm who I right Nik Sturm kind of the the best I would say you the best sharks penalty killer um great on the faceoffs right like um that Cup winner leader type of player yeah the Sharks got Barkley goodro who basically kind of does all the same things and you again you look at the investment right for goodro I know he was placed on waivers and sharks picked him up but that three-year contract at $3.6 million and Nico Sturm who is A on the last year of his deal at a much more affordable uh $2 million like I I think and especially too if with wenberg who can play center um if log gor comes back Nico stur is probably gonna be losses I know he’s really really good on faceoffs maybe he takes faceoffs and then he slides to the wing uh or maybe Barkley good sides but like the Sharks kind of replaced Nico Stern when they got Barkley goodro um because of of of what one again the investment um two with with Nico Sturm in the last year of his deal he’s going to be trade bait for somebody and whether it comes at the trade deadline or maybe a team would rather you know if they feel like they need some more help at the bottom uh their bottom six for coming out of training camp um storms days in San Jose are numbered um just because of the moves that they made and this again um with the flexibility of if especially if Logan gor comes back um wber who can play center and then Barkley Good’s your your 4C like where does Nico uh Nico Sturm kind of fit into the Sharks puzzle here um especially because they’ve also invested in his replacement between Barkley Gad and then getting tile Andrea um who I think is a solid penalty killer and getting uh Carl grundstrom who’s a big heavy forward um they they’ve went out of their way to kind of diversify that position position and get um get Niko stm’s replacement which is smart for a guy who you know you’re going to lose at some point this year um because teams value what Nico STM brings especially Championship quality teams who want a guy who can come in play Four th minutes right and kill penalties and win a bunch of faceoffs um NCO Sturm can do that um for a team so uh yeah I think though maybe for for STM where you could have seen a Patu playing three C minutes like he did last year year uh or the past couple seasons for for the sharks um and he was you know two years ago he was great had a career high in goals um last year I think with the in the kind of loss of talent didn’t really get to kind of display that as much uh with that production and now you’re he’s basically going to be looking for a new spot here what again whether it’s at the trade deadline or if it’s sometime earlier um yeah NCO St is going to be uh be elsewhere because um the sharks can get a really probably get a really nice asset for him um and he is not part of their long-term plans with some of the players that they have brought on so um yeah those are two forwards I think really kind of hurt by the offseason moves um by the Sharks and um probably will not be on the team um the 2526 version of the San Jose Sharks um because of the Investments they’ve made elsewhere so uh we’ll look at uh some guys who should be on the Sharks for peree a future and maybe a long time and why uh they the offseason was a win for them so we’ll get to that here in just one second great thing about summer of course is going to baseball games um or if you good stuff uh especially here with the lock on Bay Area uh if you want to get ready for Niners they’re starting to get geared up for training camp uh of course uh the Giants are doing miraculous things so go check out lockdown Giants go check out lockdown Warriors whatever it is uh you you know tickles your fancy we got you covered here at lockon the lockon network so um as we finish up I think two young defenseman really probably enjoying what kind of the moves or maybe the lack thereof of moves in the defense department right you look at Mike Greer and I know he wanted to kind of help the blue line but he shipped out Kyle buroughs and he traded for Jake wman on a salary dump where he got a second round contract or second round pick out of that um in this year’s draft so like the Sharks really didn’t do too much to their blue line so you have to look at um any young defenseman and I’ll specifically start with Ty emberson who right-handed defenseman I know he is uh going AR rtion again I’m not going to worry about arbitration for uh for that it it will figure itself out uh deadlines for actions etc etc he’ll get his money whether it’s one year two years whatever but uh emberson who played really well last year but missed some time because of injuries and I know one of it was a freak accident with the skate cut um but he you know in last year played 30 Games had a goal nine ass 10 points but was really good defensively I thought um played really well on the right side and the Sharks don’t have a ton of right-handed defenseman um you know you have Matt Benny’s coming back from an injury um and it’s basically Benning and and Ty emberson are the right-handed defenseman um Ruda has played off on offand uh vlasic’s played offand like some of these guys have have played on their off hands before for but there’s you know really not too much competition for emberson to kind of make this team and not only make this team I think play Big minutes on this team as a potential top four defenseman um especially on the right side right uh if you maybe you go wman like Ferraro and have one of them play on their off hand um and then Benning if he’s coming back from injury if he’s okay like and then maybe Tai emberson but I think emberson like realistically could be playing top four minutes for the Sharks this year and if you know he signs a one-year deal and then has a monster season this year where he proves to be like a kind of shutdown type of defenseman could set himself up for a nice payday going into next year um especially if he only signs a one-year deal with the sharks so um and the Sharks will still have his RFA rights like could set himself up really really nicely because of the lack of moves on the blue line to kind of help solidify that and there’s still plenty of time maybe the Sharks do go out and try to add somebody on on the right hand I did a episode a couple week or I think it was last week about some potential options for right-handed defenseman who are still out there hasn’t really been too much movement here with with I think uh with the sharks I think uh one somebody something with with the Panthers but it’s you know there’s silly Tyson Barry there’s Schultz out there those are potential options if if the Sharks wanted to as someone there um and then I think another young defenseman um who has to be feeling really good about his chances to make the team are is Shakira mukad Dulan right I know the left side is way more stacked right um again you have vasic um you have Ferraro you have wman uh you have Yan Ruda you have Henry thrun um like I still if you look at though like what Muk Mullan does really nobody other than wman who’s a you know a puck moving defenseman but nobody else can really do what Shakir Muk Muk Mulan does um and if wman can maybe he’s a power play one if Shakir mukan makes the team and is the power play too like it’s a good kind of good place to set him up for for early successes um and maybe you partner him with a emberson who can be a little bit more defensive oriented let Muk Mulan um play a little bit more offensive game which I I’m I think he’s more geared to not to say that as defense he can’t play defense M I think can play pretty solid defense but um he just has some offensive traits that other guys just don’t have especially for a guy of his six foot4 size um he moves really well um except for pivoting really quickly but anyway moves really well with the puck and without the puck me cover ground really well and I think his what he does in the offensive zone uh could be a really big boost for the sharks so um with the lack of moves I think from from the Sharks on the blue line you know basically swapping Cal burrows for Jake wman which is a huge upgrade uh don’t get me wrong like wman I think is a much better player than um Kyle burough and still really weird offseason from from Detroit but that’s neither here nor there you you I think my career wants wants to give these young guys an opportunity to go earn some jobs and see if they can kind of use this year to grow and develop and hopefully start to kind of set the foundation for the Blue Line uh for San Jose for years to come so and I think Ty Emerson and Shakir Muk Mulan have a chance to kind of be big pieces in that and I again if emberson can say healthy is huge um but you know some of the other guys like Matt Benning who’s got you know two years left at 1.25 like very small contract right uh vas’s got two years left at his $7 million who’s just gonna be here until the sun explodes and Ferraro of course is going to be trade rumors around Ferraro until either he gets traded um or he signs an extension with the sharks or becomes a free agent like there you know there’s a lot of and Yan rudo is in the last year of his deal like there’s this this blue line is going to turn over here really quickly um if you look at you know the 26 27 season it’s going to be um a lot of new faces um whether you know with guys like thrun and emberson and Shakir Muk Mullan if Jack Thompson like there’s gonna be a lot of new faces for this uh blue line and I think gre’s done a it’s interesting approach from Greer to kind of set the table for these guys to kind of earn their spots and and try to play push out some of these veterans here so um yeah so I think those are the the kind of six players who benefited or were hurt the most by the uh San Jose Sharks offseason moves of course you know um signing M celebrating signing Will Smith um getting Tyler to Foley I think are hu that’s that’s a basically a top six line you just kind of you know or top two line um that you just kind of built out of free you know from guys who just weren’t even here last year um and you know I think the lack of moves on the blue line is is just very interesting I’m curious to see if Greer what Greer does there if he tries to add another piece as the offseason kind of WS down or if he just is like let’s Let It Ride let’s um see if a new system with Ryan wowski kind of installing it uh we can see if these young guys can another year maybe take a a big jump here so um that’s going to be it for me today we’ll be back tomorrow we’ll do some more we’ll kind of get to know some of the uh a little bit better on some of the draft guys uh who the guys sorry who the Sharks drafted so we’re not just gonna be talking about celebrini uh kind of get to know a little bit more of those guys start to kind of dive into those um next week we’re gonna I’m working on my Sam Dickinson Deep dive so we’ll have a big Sam Dickinson Deep dive next week kind of talk about his as he signed his DLC talk about what he’s uh kind of expected from him what his path to development looks like and um kind of what he needs to work on as he as he continues to grow and develop so um so that’s GNA be it for me today make sure you’re following wherever you get Podcast of course you can watch uh on YouTube as well follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon sharks follow me on Twitter at my fry hole till tomorrow bye friends [Music]

With the offseason all but wrapped up for the San Jose Sharks and the National Hockey League, who were the big winners and losers for the Sharks? Start with why William Eklund has to be the biggest winner this offseason with the additions of Will Smith, Macklin Celebrini, and Alex Wennberg, all considered natural centers. Then, why might Thomas Bordeleau have seen his NHL job evaporate with the additions Mike Grier made this offseason? Then, shift to the bottom six and explain why Givani Smith might be playing with the San Jose Barracuda next year, thanks to the additions of Ty Dellandrea and Carl Grundström. Next, Nico Sturm might have been replaced by old friend Barclay Goodrow and why Sturm could be traded sooner rather than later. Finally, the lack of additions on the blue line was a huge win for Ty Emberson and Shakir Mukhamadullin, who could see big minutes in the NHL this season.
