well it seems only fitting as the Cardinals and Royals meet this afternoon and evening in St Louis that we remember the dearly departed Whitey Herzog a great member of both of these organizations the Herzog family is here today Whitey Herzog is with us in spirit after passing away shortly after opening day here in St Louis Missouri one of the greatest managers in major league history certainly one of the most memorable and decorated managers in Cardinals history know I don’t know what it’s like to be a major League manager but I know what it’s like to be a major league player and I know what it’s like to be managed by one of the greatest baseball minds of our time what does a player want from his manager it’s everything that Whitey gave us the freedom to play the game with no interference respect communication and a high baseball IQ and he was at a genius level you know Whitey he believed in me and he brought me here to this storyed franchise and it changed my life I’m honored to have had my name linked with his in Cardinal history on behalf of all the players who played for you Whitey we love you and we miss you today and an emotional day for this young man Gordon Gro is already a big league pitcher Brad but now he’s a big league pitcher of a different sort in game two yeah game one against the Reds look it was great for and a third and only three hit gave up one but his first start the pitch Arsenal for Gordon grao the four seam change up was really good last time out Adam Frasier leads off little pop hit toward left Brendan Donovan’s going to have no trouble with that and 14 and all together as a cardinal Michael Waka just by himself self was 20 games over 500 59 and 39 now pitching for the Royals and facing Brendan Donovan line to the left that’s down for a base hit Donovan starting a new streak his 21 game on base run ended in game one so a leadoff single for him here’s conteras three hits against W two of them homers first pitch to conteras fast ball hit high in the air deep to left center field Melendez onto the track at the fence is B’s there too he leaps and makes the catch at the wall and Brandon Donovan Sprints back to First Isbell called for it jumped right next to Melendez and made the catch at the wall B Smith 10 hits in his last 38 at bats shallow Center again this time Massie is there and he’s got it so Waka Works around the lead off single and no score at the end of one in St Louis Salvador Perez will be there as a royal the ninth time and he’s been named to the American League Allstar team is cut on a Miss Perez down swinging there’s out number one Michael Massi aboard with one out double play ball Crawford to Second for one all kinds of time and Gro a strike out and a double play keeps KC scorers through two go to have Lars Newar back and here’s a Fly ball that struck well the left field that’s hit deep back to the wall and that one is gone a home run for Lars Newar leading off the second and the Cardinals are on the board Lars measured that one just right almost a left-handed version of what Paul gmid did in game one the one-w pitch swung on in Miss strike three beautiful change up from Michael Wonka called third strike so Waka strikes out two in the bottom of the second inning but Lars nar’s home run puts the Cardinals in front here in the third inning it’s MJ Melendez righty deal swing and a flyball hit well deep right field n Bar back looking up it’s gone into the Cardinal vulpen MJ Melendez ties the game merville with his 10th where’ he go M where he get that b head out one out contus one and two in the pitch and a swing in a miss and aaka Strikes Out conteras who’s 0 for two contras just broke his Bat two two pitches hit well deep left center field back goes Isbell on the track he’ll make the catch for the out and isbell’s made a couple of real nice catches at left Center in this ball game and he helps Waka put up a 1 two three inning the first of the night Bobby wood junr leads off inning number four swing and a little flare in the shallow left it drops in for a base hit Bobby wood J making nine straight games with a hit for Bobby he starts the fourth inning with a single to left and pasquantino doubles off the right field fence and Kansas City has a fourth inning threat second and third nobody out and now Perez the villain in game one breaking ball hit in the air to right field I think that’ll work Newar Gets behind it both Runners are tagging and nbar will play it to third so Junior comes down the line and the Royals lead 2-1 now scantino to third two outs so hter rro is next and that’s stroked into left field and that is down and Hunter Renfro with two outs drives in Vinnie Pas quantino and the Royals lead 3-1 here’s the last Cardinal with a hit LS SAR driven again toward right Renfro chases that one down it’s off the base of the wall Nar has a one out double two outs runner at second Gorman struck out his first time that one driven toward the Gap left Center long run that ball is down that ball is in the stands on a hop Cardinals get a run on a double from Gorman it’s a 3-2 game so Waka doesn’t have a shot down inning he gives a run back and is B didn’t miss it another two- strike hit and he’s aboard with the top of the order lurking there he goes pitches low and Isbell is going to be in there oh and he’s going to stay put and I don’t know if he could have advanced another 90 ft because canani was charging in from center field Frasier hits it into left field pass Crawford and isbel will go to Third and he’s going to run on Donovan and he is going to be safe and now there’s nobody covering third base and Frasier is going to go in there without a throw that’s right staying aggressive love that nobody covered third base and so Adam Frasier expertly rounded second and then went on a Sprint race with Nolan Gorman to the bag and beat him there no contest to Bobby Wood Jr fast ball Sky down the right field line toward the corner Newar Sprints over stays in Fair territory makes the catch Frasier tags up from third throw to the plate on a bounce not in time Frasier scores standing sacrifice fly for Bobby wit Jr and now it’s five to2 Royals in the top of the fifth inning the is is single the other way with two outs here’s burles and he drives this one toward the Gap right center field that ball is off the top of the wall contras is getting waved around third which throw is going to be off targeting up the line Burleson’s going to go to third without a throw and the Cardinals get a run back he just missed a two-run homer instead it’s a double and an RBI now goldi a popup and a long fly out is chopped off the plate that might score run it will score run the Cardinals put it in play and make it a one-run game salvi leads off and swings and hits it high in the air deep left field that’s way back there and that ball is long gone long home run for Salvador Perez and the Royals lead is 6 to4 438 ft over the Royals bullpen pass the fence and left Center so salvi unloads and he homers for the second time today he had a homer in game one another base hit isbel will make the turn and head to Third and that puts a runner at third base with less than two outs for Vinnie pasquantino and he’ll get a base hit into left center field and now Vinnie pasquantino has 15 RBI in his last 15 games and here comes Shriver in a three-run game with Runners at second and third and nobody out face Wilson conteras that ground ball to short will score a run that makes it 75 give conteras RBI number 22 facing Burleson here’s a big strike out and two away so shriber gets tough Lefty now it’s Goldie’s turn got him to Chase and it wasn’t even close and shriber does a great job second and third nobody out and the Cardinals get just one now Isbell the center fielder number nine batter leads off Isbell lines it into deep right field New part turns and it’s gone and the Royals have scored in six of the last seven Innings is he have a night second hit Third Run scored yeah seventh Homer a laser liner that’s a high fast ball that he took his hands right to it now the Cardinals have one out left Wilson contras at the plate contras hits it in the air right center field Isbell into the Gap he calls for it makes the catch and the Royals win the Royals sweep the day night double header at Busch Stadium they have taken the first two games of the I70 series
