extension right now maybe pull a little Atlanta Braves and lock up that catcher position with Logan ohappy the Pirates are interested in Taylor Ward question mark but first Mike let’s recap that big win against the Rangers the Angels won 7 to2 on Wednesday night yeah before that game Johnny the Angels called up Kenny Rosenberg and they optioned what they optioned Davis Daniel I’m so not our boy I know he got sent back down has options it it made sense sure and that was for yesterday’s game Rosenberg was activated and then today the the word is that he’ll get sent down and then they’re gonna bring up a starter Jack konowitz how about that I said it right jack K is going to be activated and he’s starting for the Halos John and that’s some good news he’s revamped his arm slot and his delivery and he revamped that last year and this year he’s really seen his ground ball percentage really come up he has a 2.90 erra over his last nine starts at Rocket City in fact a couple of complete games are included in thatn are you excited to see konowitz Pitch for the Angels yeah I’m excited to see him at the major league level Mike I think he had something like uh six or seven runs allowed but uh six or seven less earned runs runs which tells me a lot of Errors behind him and considering he’s a ground ball pitcher I could see that making sense so I’ll be interested to see what the defense can do at the major league level behind Kohan witz I gotta I Gotta Laugh because at some point we were talking about konowitz and somebody was like you guys are saying it all wrong it’s kokanovic so shout out to that guy yeah yeah it was probably me I probably said it wrong all right let’s talk about the game last night Johnny the Angels got the scoring started first bottom of the second Tyson Drury are on base with one out and then Zach Netto singles and Brandon Drury scores and then Mickey moniac follows with a three-run home run and immediately in the second inning the Halos are up by four which is really good news they added another run on a Zack Netto double and Brandon Drury scored in the bottom of the third suddenly we’re up five nothing Johnny I want to hear something out of you I want you to say this out loud Mike uh because you’re the one who brings it up all the time and and that’s fine a statement of fact but you glossed over Griffin canning starting this game without giving up any runs in the first inning or the second inning what where is the praise from Michael P frish uh about Griffin canning good good for Griffin good for we’re gonna we’re gonna talk about him John because he did not go very long in this game and I think that there’s I know that still I want to hear it from you you just want to compartmentalize the angels and I get it right I get it speaking of home runs and Griffin canning John fifth inning is when he gave up the home run to devz made it made it five to2 and then canning just really struggled in this one John loaded the bases back-to-back singles to Simeon and Seager which is I guess acceptable because those guys are really good right but then Josh Smith walks and then wash comes out and removes canning and that brings in Hans Krauss he Strikes Out Wyatt Langford and adalise Garcia to get out of the inning and I don’t know if you’ve noticed this or not do you remember Brandon Donnelly when he pitched for the Angels O2 was when he really became good Brendon Donnelly Brendon Donnelly and and Hans Krauss reminds me a lot of Brendan Donnelly his windup his delivery and even his story of like not really popping in the Major League Baseball realm until later on in life and quite honestly I really like this guy yeah I like him too he came out on the mound and said I’m here to pump you up and so uh give it up for Hans everybody that was fantastic and uh so that that did end Griffin canning’s day four in a third Innings pitch seven hits two earn runs two walks three strikeouts uh that’s not what you want out of your starter when you had the bullpen pitch seven Innings right night before Mike the the weakness of this team is the starting rotation right now because there’s one good starter in this rotation and then I don’t even know who the rest of them are I’m just it’s Jose Sorano it’s been Rony cont it’s been Davis Daniel but they’re moving pieces around and trying to figure out what they’re going to do and so at this point it really is the weakest part of the equation fortunately two earned runs over that four and a third Innings pitch for Griffin canning was one of his better outings at day right right yeah Krauss went an inning in two thirds he gave up a walk struck out two Johnny 084 erra come on in 10 and two3 innings pitched this season and then your boy Hunter strick Hunter Strickland comes in to he didn’t look very sharp because he did Pitch two innings the previous night in fact the first four batters Johny hit walk fly out hit by pitch which loaded the bases but then talk about what he did against Wyatt Langford yeah he was able to get Wyatt Langford to strike out after he fell behind two and0 and then wash went to get Strickland out of the game they seriously asked a lot for him and I think that he delivered in that moment considering yeah he pitched two innings the and look again this goes back to the area of need which is starting pitching right now and they’re still waiting on debm to turn it around and and Chase silth to figure things out in Triple A he’s recently been removed from the triaa rotation so that he can figure things out but Mike isn’t doesn’t that show like restraint for the first time in the Angel’s lives where it’s like oh man we need demmer’s back up here immediately because any other situation that the angels have been in in the past they wouldn’t have let deur stay in Triple A that long because of the state of the rotation and so for me I’m like at least they’re doing something right I know it sucks for us watching these games because I mean look 16 games under 500 so there’s not really any reason to rush those guys back and they see that yeah and for the first time us fans are not the smartest ones in the room for a change the angels are actually doing something right so after that mikee Jose Marte came in just needing to get the one out with the bases loaded fac to dois Garcia got him to pop up and then the bullpen got the Rangers to leave The Bases Loaded twice within three Innings Marte actually ended up going one and a third no hits or runs and one strikeout as well yeah then the Angels got an insurance run the bottom of the eighth Zack Netto hits his 12th home run Johnny he’s got 20 doubles and he’s not even through the first half of the season yet like this guy’s having a a pretty good year I would love to see some consistency from him in that he has a little bit more consistency on offense but John nine defensive run saves I mean this guy’s playing incredible defense and I just I get really excited when I see Zack Netto come through defensively but even more excited when I see him hit bombs like he did last night it sometimes feels like Netto is the right guy up in the right situation and and I know that with Brandon drwy on he was able to add that two-run home run and so the game was already 5 to2 at that point it became s to2 and to me it it like I trust Netto in big moments and I know that was not a high leverage moment considering they’re already up but having two more Insurance runs is fantastic and I was happy to see him Smack That Home Run he got robbed of the uh the RBI earlier when drewy scored because of the air in right field so that was unfortunate but at the end of the day I think it was uh pretty cool to see him hit that two-run home run and again I just feel very comfortable when he’s up at the plate yeah absolutely and then Carlos Estes comes in closes it out threw over a 100 miles an hour on one of piece of cake right and so that was great to see Angels again win seven to2 they Salvage this series and it was unfortunate because last night that two nights ago they had a really good chance to win that game and it could have easily been a two out of three right now they’ve split the the season series against the Rangers and find themselves like you said 16 games under 500 to go back to the conversation about not bringing up the pitchers and rushing them that is a bright spot on this team that they are allowing some of these guys to continue to work through some things in the minor leagues and I’m really excited to see guys like like Jack coming up and pitching for us toh today and and I want to see other pitchers as well and if they do end up making some of the trades of the bullpen guys it’d be great to see some of those doublea guys from Rocket City come up and see what they got at the major league level yeah I think that’s the big question a lot of Angel fans have is what are the Angels going to do over the off season and into next season in terms of the areas of need that they have and I think one of the big areas that won’t be such a big deal will be that Bullpen you’ll have Ben Joyce there you’ll have probably Jose kih you’ll have Robert Stevenson back at some point so there’s three good pieces right there but Mike I think you’re right I think if the angels are able to sell off a lot of those Bullpen arms we’ll see the the double A guys get promoted and show us what they can do I think uh that’s that’s one thing I want to really highlight is the fact that the doua guys uh can can bring it and I think that if they come up and show what they got the angels will be able to figure out like okay will this guy fit in next year will this guy well maybe not maybe he needs a little more time that’s something that I hope that they really take seriously uh in this season where it’s a see what you got kind of GE because that’s where we’re at right now hey thanks for making lock on Angels Mariners and then he thought that I was a Mariners fan from that point I was like you must be new around like why are you on this why are you on the show if you’re a Mariners fan long time every dayers know how much I despise the Mariners it’s a joke it’s sarcasm it’s my gift come on we’re playing around Mike Logan Oh hoppy has been a stud this season and no surprises and of course we’re big fans of Logan ohappy the other day Taylor Ward had nothing but good things to say about him in terms of being the captain of this team entering last night’s game here’s where he ranks among all qualified catchers he’s got a 282 average that’s the third best in baseball and the second in the American League a 491 slugging percentage that’s second in baseball first in the American League 825 on Bas plus slugging again second in baseball first in the American League and a 130 weighted runs created plus that means he’s 30% better than League average that makes him third in baseball and second in the American League Mike he’s caught 640 Innings that makes him first behind the dish in Major League Baseball he’s also one of three catchers batting greater than 280 with 10 plus home runs so the big question here no allore game Logan happppy is it because he’s on a bad team is I mean obviously the voting thing is it is what it is but not even as a a backup not even selected by his peers what’s going on here well I like the voting and I think that it’s cool that the fans still get to vote and and I really honestly don’t care I I I want those people that the fans want to see in the starting lineup I think that’s awesome when it comes to backups I do think that there should be a bit more of thought behind it I can understand why salv Perez is going to be the backup and you probably don’t want to carry three catchers however I think someone like Logan ohappy is going to be the face of this franchise moving forward and I could see him getting some votes he’s starting to capture people’s attention especially if he it’s walk-off home runs and he takes his jersey off again people really noticed him when he did that because that guy was ripped and so I I I think that he is somebody that has a future of not just being on the All-Star team but being somebody that actually could get selected via the vote now I will say this with a caveat Benji Molina fantastic catcher never made made an All-Star team even as a backup although I don’t think he cares because he’s walking around with his World Series ring what’s going on right how you so that that I think a lot there’s a lot of factors that play into that I think the Angels not being great the Angels aren’t getting noticed because of that so again a lot of factors I do think that Logan ohpp should have at least been a backup but I also understand that having three catchers on your roster can be a bit much but it is the All-Star game doesn’t really matter put him in a DH and and and let him swing away right right and and honestly like you think about is is there a roster limit on these things like they were so fast and loose with the rules sometimes like didn’t Rob Manfred like select phol and somebody else uh to oh was Miguel Cabrera yes he he personally picked them to be on the All-Star team one season because you know they were at the end of their careers and whatnot and so it’s just it’s it’s silly to me that you know we’re going to draw the line there but Mike here’s the big question ohpp has one more season as a pre-arbitration player which means after that in 2026 they go into arbitration where the team and the player have to decide on a what they see as a fair number based on their production based on their value and then they decide for the year that’s how much that player is going to get paid now sometimes there’s some hurt feelings because a player says I think I’m more worth this much the team says N I think we think you’re worth this much right and so there there have been some bitter pills to swallow in the past I think Corbin Burns is a good example of that with the Brewers remember that he was pretty upset at the fact that the Brewers didn’t want to pay him as much but the the the thing under that is the Brewers have to go into arbitration and say like here’s why Corbin burns doesn’t deserve the money that he thinks he does and then they talk about all the ways that you suck like we want that with Logan ohappy so he is a free agent in 2029 so that’s five years from now he will be 29 years old so should the Angels pull an Atlanta Brave style of move where they lock up a young player before arbitration or maybe sometime during arbitration so that they can avoid all the nonsense and say hey look we want you here we want to give you a guaranteed salary each year here’s what we want to do for you what do you say Mike do you think that they should do that or should they wait around a little bit what do you think I think you do it right away and I think you do it only if you can get more than five years if you can’t get more than five years it kind of is a mute point because you have you have them for real cheap next year and then you have arbitration years which who knows how cheap he’ll be because he’s getting better and better and better and they’re going to have to go through those conversations like you mentioned I think if you’re choosing to lock him up you have to at least go seven years you have to at least go past the five years that you’re already have him on this roster and why not John yeah why not the Braves did it with Austin Riley the Braves have done it with other players as well and they lock them up at a young age and look at the Braves they can count on these guys there isn’t questions about if they’re going to be there or not and quite honestly this guy’s gonna be a pillar for this team for years to come he’s young he’s 24 I know he had the Tor laam last year I can see him being somebody that is like a buster posy for this team he’s somebody that could Pro Possibly play catcher DH and maybe even some first base so you don’t have to have him behind the plate all the time although I think right now he really loves being behind the plate and I think he loves having the most Innings caught this season and so I think you lock him up and I think you give him a pretty a pretty good deal I think if you go seven to 10 years you you got to give him maybe 120 130 million maybe even more than that right like but I think you lock him up and where you going to put your money yeah you know right now you’ve you’ve proven that you can’t really you can’t really sign strong free agents and have that be successful right like why not just invest in a Logan oh happppy why not just invest in a Zach Netto why not just spend the money and give it to him right now yeah I think I’m with you on that my one thing I’m gonna put on my I’m already wearing my angels cap but I’m going to put on my angel’s front office hat is what I’ll say and and think about it this way you’ve got randone coming off the books in 2026 and so that’s the same time that Logan Oh hoppy hits arbitration so in my opinion I think the timing kind of lines up there Mike where you can continue to play Logan o hoppy the way that you’re doing it he’s pre-arbitration right now I think I would kind of ride that out and and let those years play out because then rendone comes off the books and then you free up some salary cap in order or some salary space in order to pay Logan o happppy what he deserves now I know that I mentioned arbitration and what that often means and how it can hurt players feelings the one thing I’ll hang my hat on is that what did Otani get last year like 30 30 million or so yeah and and look that’s obviously a steal relative to what he got in free agency but at the time for a controllable player I think the Angels did right by him by giving him that 30 million plus they had him on some affordable years before that so I think there is a world in which the Angels go into arbitration with Logan ohappy and then pay him what he deserves I think and again I’m speak like I want to lock him up now don’t get me wrong yeah but I think if I’m speaking from the uh front office side of things I think you’re you have the ability to wait until 2026 when you get that rendone money off the books and then you can give Logan o happppy what he’s worth what do you think after 2026 is when he’s off right randone has two more seasons okay so then so then you’re really kind of locking him up in the offseason before 2027 right right yeah that’s good good Clarity there so yes so after 2026 uh that would be one year of arbitration so between 26 and 27 maybe you arbitrate with him that first year kind of go through the motions and that might even set up what you pay him annually moving forward sure um in that situation so again I think the angels have room to do that but as a fan say lock him up lock that you gotta lock that down you gotta you gotta get that guy on your team for at least seven to 10 years at this point today’s episode of lockedown angels is brought to you by on uh the twitters uh or X yesterday and we saw a lot of conversation about Taylor Ward I was like oh I’m intrigued Taylor Ward what’s going on and there was a report that the Pirates are interested in talking with the angels about Taylor Ward right and so the questions that kind of rose up from that are What could the Angels get for Taylor Ward are they gonna get a top prospect or do we sound like the Yankees Miguel andar and guy for my trout right like yeah do do we sound like that Johnny what do you think look we didn’t we didn’t propose this this Mike this is how I know poos to me I I am online way too much and it’s mostly because of the angels and lockdown angels and super Halo Bros I am just perpetually online and and I hate it and and here’s why because so many people came out of the woodwork and said oh you know what I’ll say this I said Taylor Ward the Pirates are interested in him to give their offensive boost that’s all I said yeah that’s all that I report that was all that was reported in the article and people said well what offense he’s hitting two 238 and he hit 180 over Jun and I I’m like I didn’t I didn’t make the trade like I didn’t report to train I’m just reporting what somebody said yeah like I didn’t say the Pirates had interest in Taylor Ward somebody who knows the situation better than I do said that the Pirates had interest in Taylor Ward if you got a problem with the Pirates having interest in Taylor Warden is 238 batting average take it up with them I didn’t I didn’t say anything call up Andrew McCutchen well here’s the thing some you know I I do have to shout out I think it’s grumpy MC dwarf Great Name by the way he said would Taylor Ward be a boost and I thought that was a fair question yes and then I posted Michael a Taylor’s 2011 batting average screenshot and I said yes then grubby MC dwarf said all right point taken so that I appreciate it but there were so many people coming out of the woodwork saying well what’s Taylor Ward even gonna get I don’t know right but somebody asked me what’s your ideal trade scenario I said ideally maybe Tamar Johnson who’s a second baseman shortstop yep look he’s the number two Prospect I said that’s probably Out Of Reach if you know they’re dealing Taylor Ward but who knows like our everyday Scott Freeman said look Edgar car is the number 73rd ranked Prospect in the top 100 and if he gets if the White Sox can get him for GTO then maybe Taylor Ward can get the number 76th ranked Prospect in MLB and I thought great job Scott see that’s using your head that’s using your brain Scott used his brain when looking at this situation so anyway Mike I picked Tamar Johnson he’s somebody who’s in high a right now he’s 20 years old uh his estimated arrival time in the majors is 2025 he’s got a 55 hit tool 55 power uh his 50 uh he’s got a 50 run a 50 arm a 55 fielding and overall he’s a 55 yeah to me if the Angels were able to get somebody like that and trade out and get an area of need up the middle would be fantastic especially somebody who can play second base and he’s got a little bit of pop in that bat as well he had a pretty high K rate one point but he has since lowered that over the time that he’s been in the minor leagues might be a few years away 2025 but that’s also I guess that’s not a few years away that’s next year good G year but he is in high a so that would require kind of rushing him through things but what’s the rush I think we can just see what he can do he’s somebody that I think could really solve the Angels problems in the future the other name that I was looking at John was Jack Branigan he’s a shortstop third baseman also in high they estimate that he’ll be around in 2026 he’s not as great offensively as Johnson is but he’s got an arm of 70 so he’s got a really strong arm yeah over at third base the other thing that I think is really important is he does show a lot of pop in his b he’s got a lot of power but he is in high a and he’s not estimated to arrive next year the maybe possibly just the year after but I think the conversation has to be had and again to your point they called up yeah well I didn’t say anything I didn’t make this up out of my head like good grief the phone rang and I answered it Mike I think uh Braxton Ashcraft Ashcraft is another one that intrigued people he’s actually a pitcher in triaa he’s 24 years old he’s got a 60 grade fast ball 55 slider uh and the control he’s got a 55 score on his control and if you go on and you dive into the details on him a little bit that’s one thing that has impressed Scouts the most is his ability to put the ball where he wants it to go I think that that would be a great pickup for the Angels hey thanks for making lock on Angels your first listen of the
