The Value The Houston Texans See In Jerry Hughes

back to Jerry Hughes an actual gentleman so Jerry Hughes signs with the Texans it’s related to JJ Watt because obviously demo Ryan’s really likes having older guys on the team I’m going to show you will Anderson on the Greenlight podcast with Chris long this is Will Anderson talking about learning from Jerry Hughes last year during training camp yeah it’s been great like Jerry probably doesn’t even know like even though I asked him questions here there I literally watch everything Jerry does from the way he warms up to the way he he takes the field I watch all his reps I’ll watch when he comes off the field I watch when he has to break everything and he’s con with the thing that like separates him from everybody else he’s constantly working his craft if it’s on break he’s doing hands he’s doing like tight toe turns and everything like that he’s like just everything and for me just watching that I said that’s how you stay in the leag this long you know what I’m saying he practi is like he’s he’s still a rookie you know what I’m saying and that’s what I respect about him so much like you know people joke a lot saying like take this day off take that day off he’s like no you know what I’m saying at this age he still has that drive everything and he pours so much back into all the guys in the room like he’ll say coach can you stop the tape will you could have did this you could have did that and I’m just with my notepad writing it all down Jerry Hughes in terms of signing older guys you might have your concerns about about JJ and his injuries Jerry Hughes has missed one game in the last 12 years and I didn’t even look to see when it was that might have been like at the end of a playoff season or something for the bills he’s been incredibly consistent his production has never been told completely by the sacks because he’s had for a long time in his career he just had a boatload of quarterback curries he had at least 45 pressures for 10 straight years including 2022 and then he went and he had 30 last year but he also played far fewer snaps than he ever had in any of those previous Seasons so he was still a really effective pass rusher and a lot of it with the text was done kind of in relative anonymity because he was playing on those lost seasons in 2001 and 2022 but here’s one minute of Jerry Hughes highlights for those of you who just kind of didn’t take note of it because it’s understandable because my God it was hard to watch an entire football game for a long time there for a few years but here’s Jerry Hughes these are actually from the 2022 season but he still moves like this at an advanced age remember will talked about how want he wanted to in corporate a swim move and he’s nervous to because he’s because he accepts coaching and a lot of High School coaches and college coaches basically ban the spin move because idiots will try it at all the wrong times and take themselves completely out of a play so you kind of have to learn it’s kind of like when you’re learning to write you have to get to a certain level of writing before you’re allowed to break the rules of punctuation for effect or anything but uh this like I think Will’s going to incorporate the spin move this year and in the Run game just like we saw like that that can be when it’s at its best or when things break down Jerry Hughes right defensive end just ghost this dude runs right around him I was I did not remember how many times he just flat out speed rushed fools who probably thought like oh I got old man Hughes yeah so I’ll just I’ll just attack him and then he ghosts Underneath Him and b boom right defensive end oh same same play in slow motion I didn’t want to I didn’t want to screw you out of just getting as much Jerry Hughes in your life as possible man I mean half of his highlights from two years ago were just speed rushes this one he doesn’t read it perfectly um and look this is uh I don’t know if this is going to cut it versus Anthony Richardson but one thing as far as teaching the youngsters here when you blow contain as a defensive end that actually gives a damn about your responsibilities you can see he’s not he’s not even worried about the sack right now he’s like oh crap I cannot let this old man Matt Ryan get outside me so turns it back in and he ends up getting the sack anyway chop comes back underneath gets a little JJ SWAT action intercepts it I I’ll be honest that I had to jog my own memory that that play ever even occurred just I I mean he was in the back field a lot in 2022 and again just didn’t play that he was more of a rotational guy last year I was surprised I thought I I thought last year despite having played pretty well that he had just figured okay that’s it I’m going to pack it in and I’m wondering if he got to that point kind of like JJ did where all of a sudden you feel like oh wow I feel pretty good and what’s this now oh and the Texans are actually good now I can I can play in my hometown me and my other Hometown Buddy denal Hunter and and get after it okay I’m cool with that think about our day dline with JJ as a roving monster backer um or just honestly denil hunter or any of those guys I I had not even considered JJ playing on the inside at all until I realized okay there there’s going to be space like there’s going to be room for those guys to just wreak havoc and he’s also in a scheme here with his old defensive line coach Matt Burke remember Matt Burke was the one that put together that video that made JJ cry in 2022 crying like good sentimental tiar it wasn’t like a forcing him to watch two girls one cup or something uh will denil with denil Will denil atrey and JJ all rushing with a two touchdown lead sounds terrifying and like let’s not forget Derek Barnett let’s not forget Mario Edwards let’s not forget some of these guys like Marcus Harris or Feld Darius Payne my cousin like just how good those guys might end up being as rookies when they’re allowed to just unleash and get after it the front the defensive front I’ve been holding back on this because of my concern about the defensive tackle position I’ll worry about that when it comes to the playoffs like when you’re playing a team in the playoffs that’s brutal at running the ball if you don’t have defensive tackles that you feel really really good about that can be an issue obviously in a regular season when you’ve got guys that can just come off like banshees on second and long third long man you win a lot of football games that way told my wife after JJ’s tweet NFL players seem to either gain weight or severely lose weight after playing JJ looks like he never retired yeah and and I think Mike that speaks to what he described his offseason was like last year that first year he retired he was taking it easy he was he didn’t lose as much much weight as it looked like I think probably because he he probably wasn’t doing any neck exercises at all but he just lost a few pounds but he looked a lot Slimmer you Lo looked a lot more slender last year um and JJ’s a guy if you’ve ever if you ever met JJ in p you know most NFL players I think the I think most people when they meet NFL players are NFL linemen more times than not they feel like oh he’s not as big as I thought he’d be except for guys like JJ and some of the offensive tackles like JJ could have played offensive tackle at 345 pounds he’s a big dude and whatever weight he would need to gain back or if he just stayed exactly where he is right now I think it’s a it’s it’s a slam dunk like that part’s not going to be an issue whatsoever I and you know what other guys do is they lose weight and then they gain a boatload of weight and then they lose a bunch of weight yeah I got I got up to my first year after I retired at one point I got down to 260 and then I was living on the beach at the time and one day I walked out at like 11 o’clock in the morning you know I wasn’t lazy I’d been doing stuff and everything but I walked out on my front porch and I was looking at the beach and for the first time in my life I was like oh there’s really nothing holding me back like in a non- vacation situation from having a drink right now and then that turned into like ah I might as well just have as many drinks as I want right now and then all of a sudden I got on the scale one day and it was a dial scale old school dial scale it was like kening past 3:30 when I hopped off the scale and got scared shitless and got back into like much better shape not I I didn’t get back down to 259 or whatever it was ever again but um

  1. The wrong video to ask this question, but I need proper punctuation practice daily. Can Chris Strausser adapt and coach effectively this year? Have you reached out to any o-line peers for opinions that haven’t made it to a video yet?
