We Need To Have An Honest Talk About Julius Randle & His Future With The NY Knicks

[Music] we need to have an honest conversation about Julius Randall and his future with the New York Knicks you’re watching Nicks Now by chat sports I am your host Marshall Green Let’s dive into it as trade rumors surrounding the New York Knicks are starting to eat up there is starting to be a paper trail of a situation where Randall could potentially not be a part of this team heading into the 2024 2025 season he is under contract for $ 28.9 million this year but he has a player option for $3.9 million next season I would bet that Julius Randle declines that player option and there is a real life world where we could be living that Julius Randall is an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2025 and he could leave for nothing and I Promise You Leon Rose world wi West Brock Aller and the entire New York Knicks front office have gone through every single situation regarding Randall and his future with the New York Knicks let’s talk about it piece by piece number one what’s up with the contract extension we haven’t heard a lot of talks about whether a offer will be made or a offer will be signed by Randall or the New York Knicks we did talk about on this channel about a month ago where Ian Begley of SNY predicted his prediction that that there will not be a contract extension done with Julius Randall these rumors will start to heat up as we do get closer to that August 3rd really first date that Randall can’t sign an extension and the most that the Knicks could offer Julius is a 4-year $11.5 million deal that’s a lot of money and he probably deserves it that would make him the 24th highest paid player in the NBA when it comes to average annual value and to be honest with you I seriously doubt that the New York Knicks are going to give him a 4-year $182 million contract extension and I also doubt that Randall takes any less than that on an extension for a couple of different reasons two time all or three time Allstar two years in a row and a two-time all NBA player but if he just Waits another seven months Randle instead of signing a 4year 81.9 million deal he could sign a 5year 300 million plus contract with the New York Knicks if he did return is Randall going to turn down $120 million guaranteed does he want to enter free agency and see what his true market is we’ve seen a lot of players want to do that a lot of money on the table either way Randall will make his decision but that will be the first Domino we see fall in this long trail of potential little tidbits of if Randle will continue to be a part of this ball Club number two team control this is one of the most calculated and forward-thinking organizations in the NBA and I truly do have a hard time believing that the New York Knicks are going to put themselves in a situation where they run the risk of letting Julius Randall enter free agency in July of 2025 with no team control that would be a bad idea and the nck they don’t operate like that they are extremely Forward Thinking I Promise You Leon Rosen crew have already gone step by step through this process and that’s why we’re starting to hear trade rumors we just heard Carl Anthony towns’ name yesterday from CP the franchise check him out on Nicks fan TV we heard alperin s goon and Jaylen durren from Mark Burman former New York Nicks Insider of the New York Post the Knicks have thought about this situation and I promise you they do not want to enter the season where they could know it could potentially be randles last year with the Knicks and they could lose him for nothing in NBA free agency another point is not many can do what Julius does on the basketball forth he’s an extremely good player extremely good there’s a reason he was a three he’s a three-time All-Star with the New York Knicks and he’s made the all NBA team two times and he was going to be an all-nba player again this year if he did not have that shoulder injury happen against the dirty Miami Heat there’s not many people walking this Earth that average 24 points per game 10 rebounds and five assists Randle is on a short list of players that can do that and have done that each of the last four seasons he’s a great player there’s no doubt about it he can be the engine to your offense he can be the face of your organization he was the best player on a Knicks team that had a starting lineup that featured Alfred pton nland no well and Reggie Bullock that were the four seed in the Eastern Conference he can be the guy that drives success for a basketball team and when Julius Randall played with a healthy OG and an Obi and he played alongside Jaylen Brunson the Knicks were the best team in the NBA that month of January was the best Knicks basketball I have seen in the regular season for a long long time they were excellent they played together for 12 games and they were 11- one when Randall OG and Jaylen Brunson played all together they were 11- one unluckily for me the only game they lost was the one I attended against the Dallas Mavericks so maybe I’m the bad luck and they should have been 12 and0 they weren’t just beating teams by the hair of their chinny chin chin either they were dominating teams in those 11 games they won by an average of 18.7 points per game they were the best team and the most dominant team for a 12-game stretch not a large sample size but that’s all we have to go off of and they weren’t beating bad basketball teams they were beating the breaks off some of the top Elite teams in this league they beat the Minnesota Timberwolves in their first game together by six points then they beat Joel embiid in the Philadelphia 76ers by 36 they beat Nicole yic in the reigning NBA Finals Champions by 38 and they final game together before haime hawz decided to end it all they beat the Miami Heat by 16 points they were dominating their opponents but on the other side of that card the playoff struggles we cannot talk about Julius Randall if we do not mention playoff struggles these are just all facts there’s no opinion in this video it’s all facts that’s why it’s an honest conversation and the honest truth is Julius Randall has failed to live up to expectations in the playoffs for whatever reason you want to come up with he didn’t have great players around him versus the Hawks he was coming off an injury versus the Cavs against the Heat he was finally coming back and rounding into form and being healthy but the facts are the facts in three playoff series he’s averaging 17.1 points per game and 9.4 rebounds that’s awesome but he’s also averaging 3.7 assists to 3.9 turnovers a negative assist to turnover ratio I don’t care if you’re hurt I don’t care who the players are around you you should not be turning the ball over more than creating assists for your teammates and shooting 34% from the field and 28% from three the truth is Julius Randall has been a playoff choker whether you want to blame it on injuries whether you want to blame it on Alfred pton nland Noel and Reggie Bullock being The Supporting Cast for the Knicks I’ve always said this and I truly do believe it if regular season Randall the three-time allstar the two-time all NBA player if that guy shows up in the playoffs the New York Knicks can win a championship but it’s happened not once not twice but three times where Julius was awful in a playoff series and I don’t need to touch the stove to know it is hot there is a problem and a major question mark on if he can ever be a successful efficient winning player in the playoffs I think he can but the fact that I don’t know he can makes it a problem in a conversation of if he could be a part of this team if the Knicks want to win the NBA finals for the first time in 50 plus years also he’s had two major injuries in each of the last two seasons in 2023 he had a nasty ankle injury where he had to have a major ankle surgery this past year he dislocated his shoulder and he had to have season ending surgery after trying to rehab he’s also 29 years old and going to be 30 in the month of octob uh November excuse me and I think it’s at least a little bit risky to give somebody who’s going to be 30 coming off two season ending surgeries 180 million guaranteed dollars and on top of that it’s even worse to give him five years and $300 million but if you did you would have at least seen him be successful for one season my final thought on all of this is does Randall does Julie Jus fit the way that the New York Knicks want to play basketball going forward does he I’m not so sure I like the toughness and the physicality and the pressure that he puts on the front of the rim playing alongside Brunson and bridges and dvon chenzo who could maybe be viewed as a little bit of soft players I don’t believe that that’s just what I’ve heard from other people that cover this league and I like bringing that toughness and that physicality and that bully mentality that Randall has but he can’t stretch the four he’s not a versatile Defender he can’t protect the rim he’s not a highly efficient shooter those are all questions that I think the Knicks are mowing at this current moment why do we keep hearing Carl Anthony towns’ name as a player that the New York Knicks are interested in because they like the way that he plays the game CP on his show said that Knicks like cat more than they like Randall I don’t love that the guy’s been here for five plus Seasons he’s won you or excuse me he’s won he’s won two all NBA awards and he’s been an all star three times but why do they like cat because he’s one of the best three-point shooting big men in the NBA and they want to mimic and they want to take down the Boston Celtics and they know they could play a five out offense with cat at the five an anobi at the Four Bridges or Hart at the three or the two maybe dant chenzo with Brunson at the one they’re going ban for ban trying to stack up with the Boston Celtics and who is Julius Randall guarding against the Seas I’m not so sure Point number two as we try to connect some Dots here why have the New York Knicks not resigned prua they own his bird rights meaning they can pay him whatever it takes as long as they stay under that second apron to get a contract done he’s the best big man available the Knicks don’t have a backup big man he’s going to be a Nick or they’re going to use him in a sign andry I think the Knicks are trying to get deals done right now that’s why Mark Burman reported yesterday that the New York Knicks have interest in alperin sangon and dur Leon Rose is not done cooking the grill has not been turned off if you think that they are done heading to Cabo and the off season’s over for the New York Knicks you probably stay up on Christmas Eve hoping that that big fat guy with a beard comes down the chimney it is not over for the New York Knicks this off season they are going to continue to make moves and they are trying right now to make a decision on Randall his extension and his future with this organization my question to you before we bounce on out of here is is this is this season 2024 2025 is this the last year that Julius Randall
